We beat the snot out of Miami

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

Was that as good for you as it was for me?

This is going to be short, sweet, and all about Logan Thomas. Forget the fact we scored points fumbling into the end zone, and that chaos was our 12th man. (RAIN PLUS MIAMI EQUALS A REAL GOOD TIME.) This game was Logan Thomas at his best, and I'm really happy for him. At the beginning of the week the media asked if he was confident in remaining the starter. Fans got after him following poor performances against Duke and at Boston College. We highlighted the mistakes on the film. Then...

HE PLAYED THIS GAME. 25 of 31 for 366 yards, 2 touchdowns through the air, and 42 yards rushing. He did that, and I'm not sure I've ever been happier for a kid. Stats aside, I'm not sure if Logan has ever looked as comfortable and confident in the pocket.

He delivered another big win on the road, and I'm happy that's tonight's narrative.

This is the game in 20 years when we look back at Logan's career we will remember him by.

This one and 2011.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Let's not count this years quite yet. Remember this college football and upsets happen especially in rivalry games. Tech should win rather handily but that's why they play the game.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I would totally agree to this, and I should. Anyone else I would..

But watching UVA play, they will try to lose the game. That team is a wreck and they have no one to lift them out.

If we come out like we did yesterday to beat Maryland and Virginia, and then (assuming a Duke loss) play competitively in the ACC-CG: we will remember this game as the turning point of his senior season.

If we stumble versus either Maryland or UVA: we will remember this game a flash in the pan performance during an otherwise disappointing senior season.

MD is gutted and getting progressively worse, we are playing them at the right time. UVAg is, well... UVAg. As ho-hum as I think we are, I think we win these.

If we sniff the ACCCG, the only question is is whether or not Free Shoes beats us by more or less than 28. Although a reversal of the 05 game would be pretty awesome.

The Question for your answer is: "What do these men have in common?

Al Bundy, Doug Martin, and Trey Edmunds.

Not only did Good Logan show up tonight, I think Awesome Logan actually did. Great bounce-back win and a great performance from our QB.

"Exit light..."

Logan appears to have two settings- 1st round pick, and worst QB on the planet. He was the former for the entirety of the game tonight.

Logan actually played similar to how he played against BC, except he didn't have an indefensible interception like he did last week. The two fumbles were kinda flukey, and the first pick was a deflection off a WR.

Loeffler was right when he said "Take away two or three plays, and all you guys would have been spending the week talking about how well Logan played"

Sure, but the 2 or 3 plays happened, and they were ugly. That's like saying take away the two or three classes I slept through and I'd have been Phi Beta Kappa.

Tonight he didn't make those mistakes and looked poised the entire night.

I'm not sure if this is your argument, but I never understood the logic of: three bad plays, put in Leal. The pick in the red zone against Duke, and the pick six against Boston College are inexcusable, but those bad plays were exacerbated by tips for picks and sacks for fumbles (really nothing against Thomas).

Not really my argument, since Leal isn't playing unless things go off the rails, and Logan's the most talented QB on the roster. More of the fact that people seem intent to minimize mistakes by Logan by either saying "it was just three bad plays" while ignoring the badness of those plays or by blaming them on everyone else but Logan. Coming in to tonight he's a 55% passer on the season with more INTs than TDs, so it's more than just two or three bad passes a game. Tonight those mistakes didn't happen, the offense took advantage of what Thomas does, and the offense dropped 42 points. Going off memory he overthrew a screen pass and led one receiver too much and that was about it. Obviously, if Logan played like that every game or close to it there would be no complaints at all about him from anyone.

I think the counter-argument here is that he HAS played that well, or close to it, for much of the year. The difference is that last night he finally got some help from the guys around him. Josh Stanford caught everything thrown his way and slipped at least 3 tackles to take a short pass to the house. The biggest difference I saw between this weekend and last weekend is that only 1 player dropped a pass, albeit in a critical situation, and it didn't look like Thomas had to do it all himself.

Well I think the difference is that Logan was definitely seeing the field much better last night. It's true that the offense as a whole stepped up, with individuals on the OLine and receiving core really stepping up their game. But Logan was finding the open receiver rather than throwing it into triple coverage. I hope he remembers whatever he did to play like that last night. If he can do that, we will be in good shape for the rest of the season. Also, Logan was just generally on the money with his throws last night. He was actually hitting guys in stride and I didn't see nearly as many overthrows or throwing behind the receiver as I did in previous games.

I finally felt like our offense played like an actual team last night, and it all started with the OLine. I was so excited to see the them get a huge push on the 2 yard line for the first touchdown run. I knew we'd be alright after I saw that. Best performance by the OL this year by far.

I'm one who thinks the 'LT has no help' card is overplayed - Andrew Luck turns the Jags into a playoff team. If you want to be a great QB, you make your help better, and LT can struggle at leading his receives, locating the ball where they can make a play, and some other nuanced elements of the position.

All that being said, one thing that's been sorely missing this year is PLAYERS MAKING PLAYS. Beating the defender even when he beats his block; slipping a tackle, then a second, then a third.

Last night, Trey Edmunds and Josh Stanford in particular just flat-out made plays. Great to see.

The fact that I don't think anyone would have ever written that last sentence before last night is the reason I continued to make that argument. Even Luck has had guys bail him out from time to time. Plus, how often do you think his TEs (not the receivers, I swear most of them had trampolines for hands) dropped easily-catchable passes? I'm not saying Thomas should win the Heisman or anything (clearly, that needs to be AJ Hughes), but if he plays for FSU, we're not even having this discussion.

All that said, I was extremely happy to see players just flat-out making plays last night. It was fun to watch and I hope it continues through this year and into the future.

Leg for #AJHUGHES4HEISMAN

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Saying Thomas's play has been the same level all season is akin to Norma Desmond saying the pictures are what got small.

Vs. Duke: 21-38, 214 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT
Vs. BC: 24-41, 391 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
Vs. Miami: 25-31, 366 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT

You're certainly allowed to argue that Thomas's play has been static this year but the stats and the play on the field would disagree. I'm not sure anyone believes that either, or else no one would be rushing to say how well Logan played and call out the haters from last week. After all, if we're to believe that Thomas's problems last week were due to Loeffler not protecting him enough, shouldn't people be silent about Thomas's play this week and instead praise Loeffler? By the numbers and the eyeballs this was Thomas's best game of the season.

I think the praise for Loeffler and the Offensive line coach has been effusive.

One big difference I saw last night, Thomas was mindful of the weather and his touch on the passes were softer accordingly.
Edit: Early on, I saw him throw one away and immediately knew he had his thinking helmet on.

With that pigskin so slick from the rain, it would have been easy to throw passes that were uncatchable due to the velocity but otherwise on target.
That did not happen except possibly for that one pass that went high and a bit right on the crossing route. I think he knew the window was small and it had to be there right now. The defense on the play made a catch impossible.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

My assessment is that he was a lot more accurate with the ball in this game. He wasn't 100%, but his high passes were generally within his WR's reach, if they weren't head-level or below and more importantly he put the ball in places that gave the WR's a chance for RAC, rather than having to dive or tumble to the ground making the catch.

He missed way way high on a few short passes to the RB's, and the one where Cline got shaken up, but overall he was much more accurate this game, and it showed in 80.6% completion rate.

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

True, and I think that was at least partly a function of him being more willing to take the shorter, higher-percentage pass. When he gets started with a lot of those short crossing routes, then when he goes downfield he seems to be a lot less apt to start sailing passes high. I only counted one overthrow last night (an attempted screen to the right to Rogers, I think).

This exactly. Thank you for pointing that out. He played the same. Everyone else brought their level of play up to meet him. I love it.

I'm not sure that is what is being said. The offense as a whole those two games was good except for the turnovers.

I think it's sad how so many people are undervaluing the rest of the team. Kids are playing their nuts off, and people want to only credit Logan. They may be young, but without Byrne, Kline, Sanford, JC, trey, Rogers, and of course the line, you got nothing.

Let's go!!!

HOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crap. I'm sorry I have fat fingers. Can someone pick me up?

gotcha

I really feel like Logan was able to play at a high level because of how we ran the ball. Less zone reads, less critical decisions, and less body blows to Logan. He played lights out. Hopefully this team can continue to build and grow!

Hell yes that's why. I think Logan played great but this, hopefully, was the VT rb's coming out party. There's some silly side of me that thinks this run game hasn't been totally absent from the team all year long....only by design. Rather that Scott Loeffler was perfectly comfortable putting every game in Logans hands until the rubber met the road.

"How you doin', Randy?"

Agree 100%. The single biggest difference in this game from previous games, IMHO, is that Scot Loeffler took French60wasp's advice and fell out of love with the zone read a bit. We still ran it plenty of times, but we also ran a lot more straight handoffs from LT to the tailback. Not only do those plays not take as long to develop, but they don't hinge on LT making the correct read.

I was baffled why, after repeatedly gashing Duke in the first quarter with quick hitters between the tackles, we didn't run any more for the rest of the game. I've always been of the opinion that if a team isn't stopping a particular play that you're running ... then keep running it until they stop it! We saw that with Stanford & Oregon on Thursday. How many times did Stanford run that one play where all of their O-lineman slanted left except for the left guard who pulled over to kick out the right side defensive end? At least 12, I'd guess, quite possibly more. Oregon had no answer for it, so Stanford just kept running it.

I agree...if it ain't broke, don't break it

Good game by Logan. I suspect a heavy wet ball is the perfect balance given his arm strength.

I should mention the game ball goes to Scott Loeffler for calling a balanced play calling. Giving the rock to JC and Edmunds to pound!

Great Team win. Awesome job by Logan and a huge kudos to the big guys up front. Keep it rolling HOKIES

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

@pbowman6

Take 2 big Miami plays away and it was very one-sided.
Great to hear the announcers give some big love for the O-line. They have a chance to continue to get even better and that makes me happy.

On the contrary, if Miami makes all fumble recoveries, the game is extremely close. Huge win, but you can't understate the fact that VT got a lot of bounces to go their way as well.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Eh, if some of the turnovers from the previous two games went VT's way, we wouldn't be having the same conversations either. Coulda, woulda, shoulda means nothing in football.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

It is true that the conversation would be different. However, it does mean something, as all VT fumble recoveries were huge. Miami fumbles twice after 40+ returns on special teams, where they would have short field distances to score. VT fumbles twice in the redzone, end up scoring TDs on both possessions. That's a possible 28 point difference. Huge.

🦃 🦃 🦃

If it was a dry game, I doubt that many fumbles would have occurred. But since it was a monsoon they happened and the team with better awareness got the advantage. On Saturday it happened to be us. I still think that the way that our lines played this game would of been ours even if it was dry as a bone.

I love you guys too.

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

Scot reads TKP. First quarter was questionable, but how many read plays did we see after the 1st? Tray is good! I saw a bit too much of JC up the gut for my liking, but good stuff. Scot, run your game!

True, but JC found some creases, and any running plays that result in >3 yards are a vast improvement over what we've seen, regardless of which back has the ball.

It also helps that Stinespring isn't the OC anymore.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Downvote all you want haters! Nothing can spoil this for me! No picks from Optimus Prime, coaches unleashing Edmunds again, some serious muthafucking #BEAMERBALL last night, and tip of the icing...Stiney NOT making playcalls! World is right! =D

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Wow. So that many people believe Stiney should still be OC?

Tough crowd.

I doubt anyone thinks Stinespring should be OC or would defend his tenure. I suspect what people are objecting to is the very few people who continually go out of their way to bash a guy that sacrificed a lot for the good of this team and who, in my opinion, deserves our respect. Let the past go. We have a capable set of coordinators now.

"Exit light..."

Nope. It's no problem. Not going out of my way at all. But thanks anyways.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Stinespring and disrespect are synonymous. Go ahead, it's in the dictionary. Look it up. (:

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Wouldn't it be in the thesaurus, then?

All the above.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Yes, we're all very much aware that you continue to disrespect CBS, LONG after he's deserved any of it.

And will continue to do so

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Stinespring fucking loves the Hokies way more than you, and he has done a damn fine job coaching the TEs. Next time you are working a job, and everyone fucking hates you, and your boss fires you, and then offers you an entry level job, I fucking dare you to accept it without flipping shit. If you can manage that, then you can come back on here and say "I had the Brian Stinespring experience. It wasn't that bad."

Pretty sure if we were getting paid what Stiney was when the alternative was potentially the unemployment line, we'd love the Hokies just as much as Stinespring does.

Stiney is also doing an excellent job as the Recruiting Coordinator. He is changing the way the staff recruits and he has CBF much more involved. Look at all of the major recruiting activity still taking place to fill the remaining 2014 slots, and all of the visits by recruits from the 2015/2016 Classes.

Yes and it could be equally argued that he is responsible for a lack of quality recruiting classes over the past few years.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Except that he wasn't recruiting coordinator until this past offseason, and we're now pulling in our strongest class in years.

"Exit light..."

are we? Seems to be right on par with previous seasons. I will say, I do think they have a better plan and execution, especially getting the QB and O-linemen they wanted. But in terms of getting "highly rated recruits," the rankings are pretty much the same this year with previous.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Stars matter little to me. I see the fact that the coaching staff is recruiting under a consistent philosophy and targeting players that fill needs and complement one another's skill sets. That, to me, is a difference from previous years, when we seemed to go after whoever was highly rated and reasonably athletic, since the coaching staff just seemed to rely on what I call "The Tyrod Mentality" - put enough fast guys on the field and something will happen. Defensive recruiting under Bud has been vastly more consistent, because he and the defensive assistants recruit for a system. The offensive side has never done that, at least not in a way that makes a lot of sense to me. This class is being put together coherently, and that excites me to no end.

"Exit light..."

I suspect Foster has an easier time recruiting defense by pointing to the DB University than the offense has in recruiting.
With some success, the offense will find it easier to recruit.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Then I agree.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Not the head rc, but still involved in the process (and quite heavily). The point is, thanks to his continued failure as a coach, pressure from TRUE Hokie fans (as well as from the boosters), now our beloved program is safe from a mistake like Stiney becoming HC. Seriously, anybody talking about him becoming HC is basically beating a dead horse. Ain't gonna happen. Never was. It was inevitable that he was going to screw himself out of any chance (which he had zero) for that route.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Who said anything about head coach?

See When/If Beamer. Retires post.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Let the people posting and reading in that thread post and read in that thread. If someone wants to say Stinespring should be HC here, then we'll talk.

Who exactly are "TRUE" Hokie fans? I suspect you mean only people that agree with you.

I agree on the Stiney criticism and a sly joke here or there. He was a terrible OC. I called for him to be gone as well, but I also didn't want him gone gone. What I think more literate Hokie fans understand is that he has done more for this program than most, and a hell of a lot more than the "True" fans you are overgeneralizing.

Before Stiney was OC our recruiting was quite good in places like 757, then he became OC and had less time, now he is back and I for one am thankful for that. Beamer made the mistake of keeping Stiney in place for too long, however we were also winning 10 a season. As most fans know (yes, even your "true" fans), Beamer is about consistency and a stable boat in unstable waters. When that stable ship faltered he made the changes necessary. Was it too late? Sure, but we are a much better team with Stiney still part of the captain's crew than without.

So lighten up dude and show some respect to the coaches and your fellow Hokies.

So you're saying that if Stiney was completely gone this program would suffer and we wouldn't survive? I don't buy it. I think our program would improve. Stiney had been on the receiving end of much negative national attention (ie $ec$pn) for his "coaching skills." I'll grant that he's somewhat of an above average recruiter. But he NEVER had the integrity ONCE during his very undeserved tenure to admit that he was in over his head and say to CFB "hey, I'm really not the person for this. Why don't you go for someone like Kevin Rogers(first one that came to mind)". But he never had trouble concocting responses that usually ended up throwing the very talented players that made him appear to be a competent OC under the bus. That is why I can never respect him. Even a number of the offensive players to depart Tech and go on to the pros have exposed him. Still he refused to take responsibility.

Btw fern, I do respect my fellow Hokie fans. I certainly make an effort to. Even the ones that post disrespectful and degrading comments to other members and myself I try my best to respect or say positive or give gobbler legs. But little quips like "literate Tech fans" probably don't come across to others as very respectful and I doubt you'll be reciprocated with respect your used to from some folks. Just an fyi

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

dude, "literate" written in this way simply means people that follow Hokie football. It's not a personal attack. Why do you take everything that way?

Stiney is definitely an above average TE coach. He was doing quite well prior to OC job. And again, while I understand the criticism of Stiney you can't say what he and Beamer spoke about privately. Maybe he did go to Beamer and say the offense is not performing and Beamer should consider someone else. I am not saying I believe that but again, I am not privy to all their private conversations and neither are you. However, just because he didn't say it in the media for us fans to hear doesn't mean it wasn't discussed.

No one said that the program wouldn't survive without Stiney either. What we said is that it's better off with him here. I believe that. He has a good reputation in recruitment in VA and VT needs him out on the trail as much as possible. Bringing in someone new that may have a similar level of in-roads would be quite difficult.

You don't have to agree with that. I am happy if you don't. It makes for good debates about the sport and team we love, but stop with the personal bantering. Don't take things so damn personal or make things so personal with people. We're all rooting for the same team man.

Again, never gave any indication that I took it personal (not sure where you're getting that from either). Simply stated that inserting little quips like that may not be considered respectful to some other fans. I don't respect Stiney in the end and I won't unless he comes forward and fesses all those listed items and then some up. I'm done with this convo...for now.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

... for clarity sake..

But little quips like "literate Tech fans" probably don't come across to others as very respectful and I doubt you'll be reciprocated with respect your used to from some folks. fyi

It's not a quip, nor is it disrespectful. It's grammar. Reading it as you state above implies taking the comment personally either for yourself or by others. It's not.

Another way to write my comment could have been:
I believe those Hokie fans who follow the team more closely than the average fan understand the value Stiney has and that he has given a hell of a lot more than most anyone else, including those fans you call "True" fans.

I chose to shorten "who follow the team more closely than the average fan" by using the word "literate". I'm not being disrespectful to anyone. So again, please stop taking and/or making things personally.

For clarity's (Hi, Clarity) sake I will switch the phrase "disrespectful" to condescending. There. Better? Look, you've got your opines and observations while I've got mine. That's that. I will continue to show the respect that Stinefuck deserves...which is zero UNTIL he somehow discovers his gonads and comes forward to admit his transgressions against the staff, the team, the fans, the school and the commonwealth itself. Until such time he will continually be labeled a coward NOT just by myself, but a plethora of others. As such he will be the subject (deservingly) of degradation. I'm done with this...for now.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

yes, the plethora of "TRUE" fans... we know, we know

And condescending? nope, still just grammar dude

Zzzzzzz...huh! Sorry. Wha?

On that one play where he lost his helmet and Leal came in, I told my buddy "oh man, here we go with this shit again." Lol.

Virginia Tech Class of 2013

Sailing the Eastern Seas....on a ship filled with sand....

It's the plays that help him succeed as well. Not as many Logan carry the team calls.

Remember 2010 VT vs Miami? Tyrod Taylor gets hit real hard and has to be taken out, 3rd and 17 they bring in r-Fr Logan Thomas, he makes an awesome play for a first down. Well anyone notice tonight against Miami, Logan Thomas gets his helmet ripped off, 3rd and 11, they could put Leal in, but they take a timeout so they can make sure Logan is in for the next play. This showed me something. Everyone wanted Logan's head last week, and the coaches said he gives us our best opportunity to win, and they showed that they meant it tonight. Seems like they had more confidence in Logan as a R-Fr than they have in Leal as a R-Jr. Really has me thinking whether he will really have that QB spot locked down next year.

I think the situations are slightly different this time. In 2010 Tyrod was out because he was slow getting up and the coaches wanted to make sure he wasn't injured. Logan would have had to come out this past weekend because his Helmet came off, but there was no indication that he suffered any injury on the play.

Also some other things to remember are that the receivers, rbs, and line were different and it was a lot earlier in the game. Focusing specifically on the receivers, Coale and Boykin were already well into their "catch anything that's within reach" phase, whereas our current receivers either aren't there yet or some of them are just getting into it.

Don't play Leal instead of Logan, play Logan like you would play Leal.

Much closer to that last night.

amen

amen

I'm still not sure I fully believe that, but on the same token, I don't think the offensive struggles have been entirely Logan's fault. We can all agree that his first year under center was outstanding, but he had some outstanding surrounding talent and the offensive game plan allowed that surrounding talent to showcase their abilities. Hell, Jarrett Boykin was making Scott Tolzien look like a real NFL starter yesterday. After the mass exodus of the experienced skill position players and Logan's success in his first year, it seemed to me that our coaching staff became infatuated with the idea that we had the second coming of Cam Newton at the helm and they game planned accordingly as though Logan needs to take over the game ... every game.

I feel as though the new coaching staff fell into the same rut and hence, our offense continued to struggle. I think the surrounding skill players (receivers especially) slowly developed a little Georgia Tech syndrome, where what you practice during the week doesn't translate well on the field on Saturdays simply because you just block and watch the same running play over and over and over again. So when one of Josh Nesbitt's/Tevin Washington's dead ducks do miraculously find a wide open receiver, he has a higher tendency to drop it due to the lack of actual consistent experience in a game. I think our skill players may have fallen victim to that same problem.

In order to grow and improve, people need to be given an opportunity to do so. Practice and studying will only get you but so far. Anybody whose ever started a new job in a field that seems somewhat foreign to them can attest to this. Actual on the job experience is far more valuable than any training or practice. Our gameplan against Miami put other players (specifically running backs) in position to better contribute to our success and that clearly helped Logan elevate his game accordingly. I don't want to take too much away from Logan's great game, but I think most QB's could have had equivalent success against that Miami secondary. I've never seen receivers so open in my life. [I immediately take that back. We've all seen Danny Coale play].

My point is, you put another QB in place of Logan, and I think our coaches call a more balanced game, which is likely more effective than forcing one guy to account for ~90% of your offense (regardless of how big he may be).

"Mountains get big cause they have no natural predators." - Ken M

Or maybe I could be wrong and Jim Weaver should have found a way to play Miami and Georgia Tech every game.

"Mountains get big cause they have no natural predators." - Ken M

Loeffler might have accidentally stumbled onto the best game plan for this offense. Took a while, but eventually realized that running zone from the pistol was having a lot of success.

I hope it wasn't an accident....

Onward and upward

Where has this been all season?! Great win Hokies!!! Let's go!

Go Hokies!

All the receivers, minus a few plays, caught the damn ball when it was needed. Running backs played great along with the O-line. Total complete game when needed. Out-frigging-standing!

We seemed to get out of blitzes MUCH better tonight.
I don't know if it was a combo of picking it up better by the line/RB's; also Logan was money on dumping it off quickly.

We scored more against Miami than FSU did.... On the road... Yeah, that happened.

Could have been more too if the refs didn't screw us on that last Coleman run.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Beamer is such a class act. Rather than kick a fieldgoal he was content with potentially turning it over on downs. How many other coaches would have taken the fieldgoal and padded the score a bit? They were talking about Auburn not taking their foot off the accelerator and that just seems so classless to me

in Fuller we trust

I don't think it was that he didn't want to pad the score. We went for it because he thought we could get it and probably score again. We were driving and Miami had not been stopping the run. One yard almost seemed like automatic that game. If we got that first down I think we would have scored again. I think at that point our gameplan was to "beat the snot out of Miami" as joe said.

I think it was a combination of things.
I think he didn't want to kick the FG. He didn't want to look like he was padding the score to embarrass.
I think he wanted to try again, at game speed, the Hopkins FB/Coleman RB one more time to see if it would work. A unique opportunity here with no consequences.
If he wanted the TD that bad, it'd been HopkinsBear and Edmundsmonster for the 1stdown/TD.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Am I the only one who thought that was a terrible spot on that play and that we did get the first down?

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I thought we picked it up, too, but at that point I really couldn't care less. That drive accomplished all it needed to and the victory was sealed.

"Exit light..."

Not to forget - a FG try could get blocked and be returned. Why chance that and your kicker's confidence? It was a good call.

I think he would have taken a knee if he got the first and didn't score. I can't remember what game but he has done that before. Ultimate sportsmanship.

He's actually done that quite a bit.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

This, exactly. There would have been less than 2 minutes left, he was going for it so we could use the victory formation. And if Miami had tried to use their timeouts to get the ball back, Loeffler would have sent Skip in and we'd be talking about how Trey came within 1 of the school record for rushing TDs in a game (6).

The most complete game all season when the stakes were the highest. Running, passing, controlling the clock. Making stops on third down. First win against a top-15 opponent since 2009 vs. Miami. Long. Time. Coming.

The Cincy win was actually 8 months before the Miami 2009 game.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

That was fun.

Miami, rain, Lane, Hokies disrespected then dominant. You are correct sir - thanks!

I've been utterly hammered for two games, Miami and GT......just saying. I love you all!!!!

Well keep drinking for the love of God!

One day Gayle break out of cage, and he get this

GAYLE FORCE WINDS MOTHER FUCKER! That's how you go on the road and win in the rain, pound the rock, low risk pass game, and win the turnover battle. HOKIES!

It always feels so good to do that to Miami. What a great game, easily the best offensive game since 2011. I have to admit I got nervous when Logan was dropping back late in the game, but he sure showed me. And boy am I happy he did.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I love this rivalry, and I love beating these guys...your videos keep it real.

Looks like you have some updating. ;)

Now I remembered that we get a highlight vid this week. Now tonight is even better.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Thank you for including Logan's 3rd and 16 throw in that. I remember standing in Miami's student section with my Cane girlfriend, thinking "please just don't do anything dumb, Tyrod will be back in next drive." I was never more glad to be wrong.

10 wins is on the table.

Let's turn it up to eleven!

This is Spinal Tap

Somewhat ironic that Logan has made all his mistakes on a mental standpoint, yet shows that he is one of the most mentally tough players out there. He has probably had his two best games coming off when fans criticized him the most (both being against Miami, after Clemson in 2011 and tonight). Can't be more proud of him and although I still believed he was our best option last week, I'm 100% sure after tonight.

Also, if this is the kind of performance and gameplan Loeffler plans on showing, then sign me up. I still would like to have some power I in there, but if this is a sign of our future offense, then "I'm very aroused" and look forward to what Virginia Tech could be soon. And "All Day Trey" will have multiple 1000 yard seasons before his time is done.

Long as we take care of business and finish strong, I'll be seeing you guys in Charlotte. (No way Duke is winning out)

“I ought to punch UVa people in the neck. Don’t ever come on my show and brag about your football.”

+1 for "All Day Trey". Best nickname I've seen for him yet.

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

I like TD Trey myself. Definitely fits well tonight.

Thanks. I pretty much blurted it out after his run against Bama, but haven't been able to use it much until last night when the coaches finally tried to make him a specific part of the gameplan. He's a stud.
adt

The Endzone that is...

“I ought to punch UVa people in the neck. Don’t ever come on my show and brag about your football.”

I am slightly partial to "Cray Trey" coined by a group of friends. Similar to how we used to say "Tyrod Crazy" due to that 3rd and 31 against FL St. Good times.

I also want to say, I just went through the rest of the forum, and TKP is so much awesome-er after a win. Thanks Logan!

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Omfg that was such a great game. Logan played like a beast made the right reads and threw it away when needed. How about josh Stanford and Jc Coleman. Both those guys had huge night!!! Jc didn't get many TD's but ran hard in the paint. I won't be sleeping much in Miami!!!

You know how crappy we all felt? Like all the last two weeks? Well it's all gone - everything's better, and I'm happy. Suck it Canes. Sucks to be U

It was a catch

we all know Logan always has this game in him. I'm so glad he was able to show up after the last 2 weeks

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

Logan cares allot to the point where he presses sometimes..that's when I believe he makes mistakes or over throws guys badly. He was incredible tonight..one of the greatest Hokie QB performances. The scary trend continues...we are beating the teams we lost to last year and are losing to the teams we beat. If this continues we lose to LOLUVA (don't even speak it) and beat FSU.

Touchdown Tech - Bill Roth

Holy crap that was beautiful. To all the Miami fans giving me and my girlfriend shit when we were entering the stadium, SUCK IT. To the Hokies at the game, you were amazing. Together we were just as loud or louder than the Canes fans. To the team and staff, most complete game I've seen in awhile. Offense was efficient, defense kept up the good work they're expected to produce, special teams forced two turnovers, and we got the lucky bounces when the opportunities arose.

Today, and every day, is a great day to be a Virginia Tech Hokie. And the feeling of high fiving the entire team after the game was pure awesomeness.

We NEED to follow this with a big home win against Maryland but for now I am savoring all of the sour looks I saw on faces of Miami faithful, I mean
bandwagoners.

Watching it on TV and hearing the lets go Hokies chant was amazing! Shout out to you and the other fans that were at the game.

VT '15

Hye now, let's be fair. Anyone who showed up and was around long enough to have a sour look on their face is probably one of the faithful.

Or a blood relative of a player.

True, but I distinctly heard a lot of Miami fans booing their team. My son and I took a kind of sick pleasure in that, but really - WTH man. With fans like those who needs chuckle-fvcks?

Fortune Favors the Bold

Nope. It's not sick pleasure. It's sweet tasty bliss and ecstasy. Plus what do you expect, they're cane fans. Hell even their unis had "Deserve Victory" on it.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

I think it's time to trot this guy back out...

It was a catch

Loved seeing Hopkins clearing the way on those Red Zone and short yardage plays! That was fun to watch!

BETTER PLAY: GIVE IT TO HOPKINS.

Better, BETTER PLAY: Warm up the transmogrifier and then Give it to MANROGERSHOPKINS.

At that point, we could probably play 1 on 11 and use the Victory formation early in the 3rd.

I'm. So. Happy.

I'm happy for Logan. I'm happy for our defense. I'm happy for our coaches. I'm. Just. Happy.

Hugs (and a glass of bourbon) all around.

YES! SUCK A DICK MIAMI!

@VTimHokie85

I have one friend here in VA that is a Miami fan...you wanna know how I know hes a true fan? He knew for weeks this was gonna happen. He knew there was no way they could put together a complete game against our defense. Sucks to be U my friend..maybe next year...or maybe never! HOKIES!!!!!

LOGAN THOMAS! LOGAN THOMAS! LOGAN THOMAS! Sit back haters and let this man work! You can jump back on the bandwagon after he wins the ACCCG

Small bit in the scheme of things, but somebody set me straight; on Miami's first long touchdown did or did not one of their linemen from behind push one of our guys out of the way? I haven't seen the replay yet but sure seemed like it at the moment.

A little off topic here but does anybody else love watching JC run? He may only be 5'7 191 but he runs like he's 6'1 230. He may not be the best running back on the team but he is as tough as nails.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I said it last yr and will continue to until the dude is gone, but I love how JC plays and I am so stoker that they let have that last drive. Always gives 110%

He ran extremely well last night. That might have been the first time we consistently saw really good burst/acceleration from him, along with generally falling forward when he went down. As much as I would have liked to see a bit more Edmunds in there, I was very happy with JC.

I think they wanted to give Edmunds a break and really see what JC could do as the sole back.

Yeah, that's the conclusion I came to as well. It was nice to see both of our RBs running very well.

Knowles recovered that ball in the end zone because he finished the play. He stayed with Byrn to be able to make a block or play if the opportunity arose, stayed alert and finished the play.

All night the receivers were helping, finishing plays and making blocks. The additional effort was effective and was obvious while watching the game.
I give a good score to all the receiving crew for the effort after the catch even when away from the ball.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Great point. I love seeing full effort out of our guys. Our WRs have really stepped up their game as the season has progressed!

One of the commentators even made a point to note how good the downfield blocking was by the WRs. What a concept! Great work by Moorehead to get our guys doing the right things.

"Exit light..."

Totally agree. For the first time, all the receivers looked like they were focused and into the game. And that showed with their blocking, their awareness (fumble recoveries), and route running. When your receivers are staying with the play and doing these things, it helps the offense so much more than you would think. If only Marcus Davis had realized...
Just very impressed with how the receivers stepped up and came through when Logan needed them the most. They really backed up their support for him with this performance.

This and the plan to establish the running game made the offense look on sync for the first time since 2011.

“I ought to punch UVa people in the neck. Don’t ever come on my show and brag about your football.”

And that's coaching.

And also, how big was that DiNardo strip and recovery? He played a big role.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Second big special teams play by DiNardo! Also had blocked punt touchdown against Marshall!

They messed up when they came down 81.

Anyone else find it ironic how poorly the Hurricanes play in the rain?

And unlike '09, they can't even say "But we're a passing team! The rain affected us more!!! Da U iz still bak!" When you're a running team that runs for 28 yards, chances are you're gonna lose, regardless of the weather.

Some thoughts.

First, give Beamer credit for sticking with Thomas and giving the anti-Logan Thomas crowd the middle finger. That's why Beamer is paid million of dollars to run the program and that's why he's the head coach.

AJ Hughes started the scoring frenzy. No getting around that. He showed grits and toughness. Then the offense did the rest and dare I say this, the offense carried the team.

Give Coles and Knowles for providing two key plays. Both players were active in recovering fumbles in or near the goal line. Those two plays may have been small but in the final analysis, they were huge plays.

I am beginning to suspect that Loeffler have kept the playbook close to his best for one reason: to play against Miami. Miami were keying on Thomas to keep the ball and did not expect for The Judge to have a game where he is the hammer and the offensive line were the anvil.

Defensively, it wasn't their best game as the secondary were abused, but I have confidence that when Facyson watch the film, he will learn. I love Maddy. He had a homecoming party.

Let's go Hokies! #BeatMD

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

so thats what the offense is supposed to look like. ok i get now.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Obviously not a guru, but I thought it was all set up beautifully.
We got some success running and kept it up, Logan ran play-action and was finding receivers, the O-line exerted their will, receivers and RB's had attitude, and tight-end were either catching or blocking......WHAAT?!

Loeffler and Co. pitched a beautiful game.
I can't wait to read the analyses.

Wait-wtf is wrong with Kyle!????? Is he gonna be alright? What's his status!?

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

It looked like he might have tweaked that groin injury again on Miami's first long TD pass. We'll see how he does this next week.

He better be careful. We need him for the next generation of Fullers

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

We need to get him hooked up with a volleyball player before he leaves. Or maybe a soccer girl.

Make sure she's hot and fertile.

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

Let's just line up both teams and let him decide, "Emperor's New Groove" style.

I woke up on my bathroom floor this morning with absolutely no recollection what the hell happened to me after about 11:30 last night when we decided to do a post victory power hour after shotgunning beers for each Tech touchdown. That was awesome.

Exit Light, Enter Night....Go Hokies

DFWTF...DON'T FUCK WITH THE FULLERS

I'm honestly surprised, I thought they would've been dropped for sure...they didn't look good at all in either of their losses, and their wins are not impressive

I certainly agree. Their "quality" win was over a pathetic Florida team that gave Miami the game via 5 turnovers. After heart-attack wins over WFU and UNC, we pummeled them and exposed them as frauds. More overrated than we were at #14.

"Exit light..."

You speak the truth my man. I think its hilarious though, they'll probably finish ranked (unless they royal eff up like they've almost done multiple times this year) and still not play in the ACCCG, while we waltz down to Charlotte. Of course we gotta give MD and LOLUVA the business first.

...and Duke loses. The only time in my life that I will root for Miami will be next week.

"Exit light..."

I don't love those odds, actually. Worry the ACC Coastal showdown was actually a couple weeks ago and we didn't realize it.

I think Miami can take Duke. Even though they didn't show much yesterday, Duke will play them differently on defense so the Canes will do better in the run game than we did. IMH not-so-informed O.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

The big difference is Florida's rank when they beat them. The pollsters, AP and Coach's, have noted many times that they just look at the box scores for most games that week. I'd also venture that many do not look back and reflect that the #11 team lost to an unranked whose only good wins are teams that were #5 that isn't ranked anymore and lost to the #3 whose #2 now. It's just they beat the #5 and lost to the #3 and lost to an unranked, drop them 10 spots.

My Thoughts on Joshua Stanford:

We got our vengeance on Miami. I know we still need help but lets win out and go after the hardware.

@VTimHokie85

I really liked their uniforms though. I'm a big white helmet fan, so that matte white with glossy logo was sick. And orange trim on a grey jersey.......

The lowercase 'r's make it look weird

The "DESErVE" irritates me. It also probably ended up karmically screwing them over. They really should of chosen something that describes some work ethic and is less entitling.
