These INTs are bad luck, they are indicative of Willis' playstyle and constant staring down of his receivers. So sure, he might be solid at the rest, but he is dreadful at ball security and that kills us.
Fuck who the QB is. We should be able to line up and run the safest plays on the planet and score almost every drive against Furman. The fact that we have to run such high risk reward plays against them is pathetic.

Not typically a popular opinion with fraternities due to the stereotypes but i'm glad you brought it up because they're absolutely being forced out. Every group, affiliated or not, has their bad apples. I'm even willing to concede that fraternities proportionally may have more than the rest of the student body (though i don't actually believe it). What frustrated me in school and continues to is that these organizations are under a constant microscope and witch hunted at all times. People should be punished when they do wrong, as should organizations. But the independent act of a fraternity member does not represent the whole. If it is an organization wide issue, by all means burn it down. In contrast, if one kid in Lee Hall smokes weed in his room, don't punish every resident. Disappointing to see alot of good people all be labeled like that. Rant over, hoping it made as much sense as I thought.

I get it that during the flow of the game that might be how you feel but now (after the game is over) it did look like they did make some adjustments. The offense ended up scoring 21 points in the second half and held Furman to 3. I admit that this is a post-game comment and during the game it did not look good for the Hokies.
I agree it was an in-game comment. But I really didn't feel like we adjusted. We ran pretty much the same plays, the offense had no flow (and it's usual boneheaded calls). We just executed those same plays better.
Not intended as an argument but perhaps the better execution was due to blocking adjustments or something else that the coaches did. That is what I want to be true, but I will defer to others that have better insight into such matters.

The fact that it's virtually impossible to fire Fuente after this year, and he has nothing really to lose at this point by putting in Hooker and still won't do it is the most telling to me.
What does it tell you?
That he constantly sticks with what isn't working, similar to the offensive playcalling.
That he's hardheaded and clueless.
That he'd rather break a hammer trying to bash a square peg into a round hole.
And that the transfer portal will once again be filled with Hokies this offseason.
It tells me that he believes that HH or QP will play worse than a QB with 5 (might be 4 but the point still stands) picks in 2.5 games. Which is pretty bad. So both of our backups are also pretty bad, and that means that we have 3 QBs who have been with the team 2+ years and none of them are good.
That is a problem.

We have held Furman to 107 total yards - 42 passing, 65 rushing. Furman has 0 return yards in both pr and kr. And those stats - those meager stats have us down 14-3 at half. I don't even know what else to say, think or do.
Turnovers are a bitch.
Especially when combined with 3 n outs the inability to get the sticks moving on your other, non-turnover possessions.
I would consider me one of the more optimistic fans on here but man - I'm feeling like I might just be an idiot.

ESPN has Furman's win probability at 57.1%. It's an uphill battle but we can still get it done. We just have to play clean football. Stop the dumb penalties and eliminate the turnovers on offense. I don't know why this is so hard for us.

The steaming pile of poo coming out of the locker room last year and the Transfer Portal suggest that may be a stretch.
It's possible he believes RBs are inter-changeable whereas QBs are not.
Also, Tre Turner is the top playmaker and a team leader in the WR room, so he can fumble once and stay in the game. Same with Heze a couple of weeks ago when he fumbled a punt return.
Maybe that's why he's sticking with McClease even though he put the ball down last week - McClease is the leader of the RB room and has to be trusted, but King is a freshman and the coaches have to teach him to hold the ball all the way through the play

Willis is proving to be a huge liability on the field. If he's not committing back-breaking turnovers, he's missing wide open receivers, making bad reads in the run game for huge losses, or taking big sacks. Truly alarming for the season if he's the best option we have at QB.

Pitt only beat a bad Ohio team 20-10 last week and looked terrible against UVA. The ACC Coastal is just all around bad this year. Thats why i keep saying this season reminds me a lot of the 08 season. Coastal is up for grabs. Everyone is pissed at our QB and wants the mobile backup to play. And we're playing terrible against bad competition.

The decision was a terribly subjective one, i.e. deciding whether or not the guy was actually "blocking" or not. It was not only a terrible call, but a terrible interpretation of what actually happened on the play.
Pretty pathetic that's what this team needed to seal the win today.

The refs bailed us out with some Beamer Ball refereeing at the end of the game.
I assume that while the ball has not travelled ten yards that the kicking team cannot impede a player from getting to the ball. Makes sense as a rule, and if you block someone in the vicinity of the ball before it goes ten yards, they would call it. Not exactly how the rule was envisioned, but yeah, he was blocked while the ball had not gone ten yards.....maybe not the bs call we all think.
I mean, it's hard to kick a ball that sideways. The kicker has a gift for that.
But the team needs to know if they can't make contact.

I think it's going to get better in the next couple of years, on the field and recruiting.
I agree changes need to be made on the offensive staff and hope it gets addressed, but even if the staff stays the same, I think they can adjust and make the offense better. I may be wrong, but we'll see. And, obviously, the defensive staff is already going to change significantly.
The point that there is no sure bet regarding a new coach is the reason not to change after four years - because the next guy you bring in might turn out worse, then you have to replace him again after three years, and the next guy is unproven also. The program really gets lost then.
And that's before even looking at the money. Money wise, VT cannot pay dead money - and big dead money - to coaches. Period. That turns into a money pit and the program will really devour itself at that point.
I'd love to share your optimism, but Fuente has shown utterly zero signs that he is going to make any changes. Willis is going to start all year and I seriously doubt Cornelson is going to get the firing he desreves.
Recruiting is already taking a dive and it's hard to imagine that after another barely .500 year in a very down ACC that recruits are going to all of a sudden start flocking to the program.
We aren't playing very well with the talent we have, have demonstrated tons of attrition over the past 2 offseasons, and have diminishing recruiting returns. Again, I'd love to share your optimism, but I don't see the positive in any of this.
Although I'm bitterly disappointed with what I'm seeing on the field I do hold some hope we will improve. He made a irrelevant Memphis team relevant. Not making any excuses for him and I'm tired of hearing the young team excuse. But, I did like hearing coach say there's no excuse for how bad we are playing. He is admitting there's a problem and hopefully he's going to start making some changes to staff or starting *QB* other positions. If not it's time for him to move on.

I'm glad to get the win. But we cannot lose focus of how this game was played. Also the trend from last season, the off season and this year. Serious coaching changes need to be (personnel and/or assignments). This team is much more talented than the disjointed product we have seen.

It was not a pretty win but it was a win. I was concerned about Furman because of their unique offense blend. I am concerned that our offense did not do any better. At times the offense seemed to be clicking and then the wheels would come off. The offense did score three unanswered touchdowns in the second half.
The defense played pretty well all game long. Furman's two touchdowns came off of two turnovers and short fields.
This is pretty damn easy. This isn't a well coached team.

Thank you. So the call was correct by the letter of the rule. I would also bet if you polled all the special teams players in FBS I would estimate MAYBE 20% would know the rule, tops. Given how we are playing, we might need to know it in the near future. I also wonder how many kickers around the country (college and high school) are gonna watch the tape of that kick and start copying it, because it was awesome.

Watch UVA. Right now. Hell. Watch FSU. They execute the little things. They look CONFIDENT when they do.
Watch the paladins. Watch ODU. Watch Boston college.
