Scheduling Update 🏈#Hokies 🦃 pic.twitter.com/8VCdBV2nfs— Virginia Tech Football (@HokiesFB) September 23, 2019
We all pretty much knew this was the case, but now it's official. Hopefully there's some teams we can convince to play us in those new open dates

FAM!
PLEASE NOT LIBERTY! PLEASE NOT LIBERTY! PLEASE NOT LIBERTY!
Not Liberty hmmm? The Scheduling Hat whispered in Hokie's ear.
Liberty could be great. They are growing year by year and could boost your strength of schedule.
"Not Liberty. Not Liberty!" Hokie whispered.
Not Liberty. Well then... better be... RICHMOND!
Lol, touche
But I'd rather play Richmond every year for a decade than play liberty once
I know. The Scheduling Hat took that into consideration. It's like you didn't even read my Harry Potter NCAA Scheduling Slash Fic.
Fucking well played.
You beat me! I'll drink to my double post and no more ECU!
Paging motherf'ing Wisconsin!
/s
Would be really beneficial to try to squeeze some P5 home and homes in in their place but we won't do that.
Because that would be really hard to get except for maybe '24 and '25
Even those would be very difficult to get with how far out games are scheduled.
And that 2025 slate has Penn St on it already which is a solid ooc game.
Think we'll end up with like a Charlotte. As long as we don't lock anybody else into a ten year deal, I'll be fine with just about any FBS team
Yeah this should have been more the direction I targeted my sarcasm. Getting a P5 isn't very realistic that short notice....not signing a 15 year home and home deal is very realistic.
I like the idea of Charlotte but really don't want to home-and-homes. One would think we could at least manage 2-for-1s with some of these teams.
Agreed and I wouldn't agree to play them in Charlotte unless it's at BOA
Rather than Charlotte, why not play in the Belk Kickoff game in Charlotte? They dont have anything scheduled after 2023 yet. I am really surprised we haven't played in that game yet. If we can't get a solid P5 home and home, then I am ok with a solid neutral P5 game and then a G5 home game.
Technically, the 2008 game vs. ECU in Charlotte was a kickoff classic game, although I don't remember it being sponsored.
Hottest game ever. Soo much sweat. Screw Charlotte in August and screw ECU.
the one nice thing about the weather for that game was I saw one of my high school crushes in super short shorts and a VT jersey cut like a crop top. The weather has its pros and cons :P
Best bye week...EVER!
I'm actually going to go against the grain. I know I'm in the minority, but I dont mind playing the schools like ECU, ODU, JMU, etc. I think playing 1 or 2 of them coupled with 2-3 appealing P5 match ups per year isnt a bad thing. I recognize that they will always play us tough and have insider information on us (either due to transfers, being so close, former teammates knowing our players tendencies) but I have the mentality of if we're the best school in the state, it shouldnt matter. Now I know we are far from the dominant VT of the past and it's hard for us to boast that so I get why scheduling them now isnt really good because losing would make us look bad and winning does nothing for us. But is it a bad thing to pay a local school money and have the series mutually beneficial? Yes, losing to ODU probably hurt our recruiting, but it also benefits us to have a presence in 757 and be able to say 'yes we will have a game that's 20 mins from your hometown'. Same for ECU with NC. (JMU I honestly just missing watching their band cuz GAAWWD their band was so good)
I get it, losing to them is bad and we dont get anything by winning. but we were a funky rule away from Furman having a chance to tie the game late in the 4th quarter so I dont really see the difference
Edit: except Liberty, as long as that AD is there I want nothing to do with them
The other problem with JMU is that they're FCS. If we don't have one of those on the slate already, sure it's nice to keep money in state. If we have one on the slate, hard pass.
For now...
I just read that they're angling to replace UConn in the American. That would be interesting on the football side.
I hope ECU found out about it via Twitter.
Schedule UCF
*Unless we replace them with Liberty. I would rather play a high school or not play at all than give them any kind of status or money.
For everything on that list other than Penn State....
2021 home game vs Notre Dame doesnt do anything for you?
I like that we're playing WVU, that's a rivalry game that needs to happen periodically. I also wish we'd play more B12 and SEC teams.
More like Pur-dont.....amirite??
WVU was decent until recently, and Rutgers wasn't completely awful when that series was scheduled.
I said it there and I'll say it here. There is no reason to play at ODU or at Liberty. 0.
Let's get a regular thing with Marshall going.
And let's give Liberty the ECU treatment and get them the fuck off the schedule!
Its always fun to watch the double forum threads and see which one survives.
Can we get a home and home with Boise?
No!!! I would not be able to watch the ones in Boise without barfing due to the Smurf Turf.
Only if we can wear a special edition, all blue uniform @ Boise... cheatin' bastards.
Or if the cable channels have "issues" with the broadcast and the game is in black and white....
Be careful what you ask for.....
I've heard rumors.
That's cool. I miss the days when we had home-away match-ups with good opponents. These made for TV one offs are okay, but you can't tell me you wouldn't want to go to a game in Tuscaloosa, or Auburn, or Oxford, or College Station, or...
I'm all for playing some powerhouses. Losing against them is way more interesting that playing Furman and ODU
Totally on board. But if we play them anytime soon (or likely ever) its going to be a major blood bath 😄
Other than the 98 Music City Bowl, when hasn't that been the case against Bama? At least we'd get Tuscaloosa as a reward. I'd even take Cocky!
We were leading going into the 4th quarter in 2009. We just ran out of gas. I think they won the NC that year. Ryan Williams muffed the punt, but came back strong. Shut down Julio Jones for the most part.
We were beating F$U going into the 4th quarter too in 99.
Horseshoes and hand grenades.
I know right now we likely wouldn't beat Bama, but it would be exciting to play someone at that level. Sort of like the excitement when we played anOSU.
Point being, neither of those games was a "bloodbath". They were both very close until late.
Time to open up that wallet HOAT.
Go find my post.
No.
Parry that downleg, casual!
L'attaque est malparrieé touché Horse.
FOUND IT
Who wants to do the math? How much do I owe?
2020-2025 would be six season so $600.
Objection! Bad math! We will not play any of those games. Therefore, no dollar will be accumulated for those supposed contests. I am talking about the games we've played in the past.
Don't jinx it.
Pay up.
"
But actually, 2017 was the last game played. The previous season that VT did not play ECU was 2012. So from 2013-2017 would be 5 games or $500.
Objection! Bad math!
To clarify, I started at VT in 2000. When I said 'consecutive games played', I meant 'total number of games played since I was consecutively rooting for my eventual alma mater wherein we played against ECU'.
This is my fault, I apologize for the ambiguity.
As a side note, I know what the number should be. I am waiting for someone else to tell me how many times we've played ECU since I became a Hokie.
This is Operation Barn Dollars and I'm holding all of you responsible before I write the check.
http://www.winsipedia.com/games/virginia-tech/vs/east-carolina
You became a Hokie in 2000. And a game was also played in this year as well as,
2007
2008
2009
2010
2011
2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
I count 11. So I'm going with $1,100
Now who has the Hokie Club donation link?
Also, which one of these options should I choose? Scholarshop fund? Endowments? Sport specific?
@Devonte, are you the person who referred me?
Wait I lost that option I don't know how to select a person anymore. There was a list...where did it go?
The hokie club has a terrible website.
I know the guy who does...
(Ahem)
MAYBE TECH WILL HIRE RICHROD
Too late. See below.
To be fair, your estimate of the past consecutive games (5) plus the estimate provided by HokieEnginerd for the future consecutive games (6) equaled the total number of games against ECU that have been played since I took my talents to Blacksburg (11) so everyone was right in the end.
Also, @HokieEnginerd, now that you mention it, I totally should have pegged my donation to the total number of ECU games that were cancelled, so that the longer Whit waited the lower the payment would be. I'll remember this for the rest of my life.
Wait. What do we do with 25 open dates over the next 15 years? (Yeah, I KNOW what I typed there. It's called "making a point," Karen!)
Seriously, I have mixed feelings about it. In a few years, I retire to the NC coast, not all that far from Greenville. It'd be nice to know I could see the Hokies at least every other year, the way we were going. Or 1 of every 3, or however this thing was structured.
I don't mind seeing a few local mid majors fill up some games over the years.
But it has to be balanced.
We can't have JMU and ODU on the schedule and then say our big OOC game is Purdon't.
Give. Me. Big. Games.
Go to the Big 12! Go to the Pac12! Get UCF! Get ANYBODY that will actually challenge us. Lose a bunch of games, we aren't playoff caliber at the moment anyway! We aren't risking much!
I want UCF. Would we lose some to them? Sure. But we can also pull off a big win as well. Plus travelling to Orlando in October or November would be fun
I agree, we honestly need to strive to have one big P5 OOC game each year. I don't mind playing the ODUs or JMUs now and then, but we really shouldn't get locked into long-term commitments with them. It really doesn't benefit us other than just filling up a space on the schedule.
It would be great to get a home and home with a PAC 12 team, maybe USC. PAC 12 teams are usually pretty amenable to playing those type of series with mid-west or east coast teams. I also wouldn't mind us doing another series with Ohio State again.
This. I'm not opposed to helping the local little guys but we can't play like 8 of them every year, and with the way the ACC Coastal has been going, we're playing nobody every year. If a single year's OOC has ODU, JMU, Liberty, and Purdue, and we don't play Clemson or FSU from the Atlantic, then...why I am watching?
Get. Me. Games. I. Want. To. Watch.
We should go out and avenge all our recent bowl losses. Get a home and home with Cal, UCLA, Ok State, Stanford, Kansas, Georgia, Auburn, Florida St, Cincin...well, maybe not ALL of them.
And why CAN'T we schedule a home and home with Florida State? They are on the schedule once in the next 5 seasons.
Or schedule against teams we've beaten and beat them again. Like Michigan.
I mean, it WAS a catch
And why CAN'T we schedule a home and home with Florida State?
I'd love to see us schedule "non-conference" games with FSU, NC State, or Clemson. After all, UNC and Wake Forest have already set the precedent.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/01/26/acc-wake-forest-n...
100%. Lets get a non con home and home with Clemson on the books ASAP.
They won't go for it, so we're out of luck there. They schedule an extremely small number of home & home series because they want to guarantee they can play 7 home games almost every year.
Since they already rotate home & away with their in-state rival, they schedule a fair amount of G5 opponents to come to them. This year was Charlotte, Akron in 2020, Wyoming & UConn in 2021, La Tech in 2022, FAU in 2023, App State in 2024, Troy in 2025.
They just finished a home & home with Texas A&M, and the next one scheduled is LSU in 2024-25. Then way the hell out there, they have 5 games scheduled with Georgia with one neutral site, and a home & home with Oklahoma in 2035-36(!!!).
I guess this means the ECU legal counsel said suing VT would backfire and further expose embarrassing things about ECU behavior
WE WANT BAMA!
My choice to replace ECU in 2020:
One of the only Power 5 teams with an open spot next year (TCU is the only other one I could find)
I'm a horse of my word.
Thanks to @Devonte for holding me accountable.
props to you... i def. don't have $1,100 to "pony" up after a verbal bet....
You said you would give me $1,100 as well.
We're still splitting it 50/50 as previously mentioned, correct?
One more to make Horse go plaid, y'all!
As a Corps alumni, I loved this.
Now that it is well and truly dead, and ECU fans keep throwing the one Hoist the Colors 247 article around that has some questionable summarizing, and selected quotes I went and filed this with VT's FOIA office lol.
"Email exchanges from September 10th, 11th and 12th 2018 between the Virginia Tech Athletic Department and the East Carolina Athletic Department related to the travel arrangements of the East Carolina Football team.
Letter from ECU University Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs Donna Gooden Payne to VT Legal Counsel Kay Heidbreder on Dec. 19 with regards to VT-ECU football series. And response letter from Kay Heidbreder on December 21st."
Would be surprised to get anything juicy back, but you never know! Now that the series is dead and no more lawsuits or anything pending I think the chances are a little better.
It's really most completely dead!
Now if someone could just make this into a gif with a VT over Dorothy's head, and ECU Series on the body (if it shows up in the frame), I'd appreciate it. My photochop skills (and time) are lacking at work. kthx
I did not realize that cav man was in the Wizard of Oz until I saw the still for the video above.
Schedule related: Miami kickoff is 3:30 next Saturday.
Good. all Lose/Lose series should be cancelled.
My favorite show about Liberty and the Fallwells.
Baby Billy!
ECU played around and was misbehavin
They weren't the only school that donated, yet they're the only set of fans who have been holding that donation over our heads since they made it. The behavior of their fans and the media surrounding that program has disgusted me to the point of wanting this relationship permanently severed from here on out.
ECU fans are by far the worst I've ever interacted with, and that includes WVU (granted never in Morgantown).
They mocked the shooting to my face, they threw shit at us, some old lady cursed me up and down "because you're a fucking Hokie", I watched a group of college guys assault a 20 something female VT fan, the cops laughed at me when a guy shoved me out of a concessions line etc. etc.
I've never met an ECU fan that wasn't a white-trash piece of shit, and not a single one of their fans deserves 'credit' for the school donating.
Fuck ECU, fuck their fans, and fuck their beat writers for their bullshit "ECU donated to VT so VT should do XYZ" line of thinking. You don't get to use my friend's murder as a talking point.
They used part of the game check paid to them from Tech to help support victims of the worst mass shooting in history (at that time). Yes give them credit for being good people doesn't mean that people later acting on behalf of ECU didnt act shitty. Hell I'm willing to be most of the admin from that date were no longer at ECU.
A school can do one nice thing, but that doesn't mean we have to bend over backwards for all of eternity. ECU deserves the hits they're taking.
MRW hearing we cancelled the ECU series. Wait for it...
The little smirk kills me
keep it classy eastern carolina
"East Carolina" and "classy". An oxymoron is I have ever seen one.
Is that Shiv?
Alright so now it's my turn to encourage all of you to JOIN THE HOKIE CLUB
I'm in.
Just maybe not at your "whoop-de-doo" level this year...
Hard to keep up with the HOATs these days.
I know it ain't happening, but we need an every year out of conference Power 5 rival to build some excitement around our program. WVU is the obvious choice but Tennessee would also work nicely. Too bad neither is probably happening. I think it would benefit everyone involved if it did.
How about Louisville? It's not like we'll play them in conference during this half century. /s
Umm WVU is on future schedules already.
Pretty sure he meant an annual non-con "rivalry" game, which we don't have. WVU would work, or Tennessee or aTm, but it would be nice to have a more permanent one.
Can we make TAMU happen already?!!!
Perfect for so many reasons. TAMU is easy to respect as a school. Also land grant. Also senior military college. And now their athletics are easy to hate with Jimbo and Brent at the helms of their respective sports.
Until they started stealing our coaches, then...
Come on, man! Did you stop reading after that sentence? I made a clear distinction between the athletic department and the school itself and mentioned former VT coaches that are there now.
Well played, but still......no.
I would be content for not playing road games at trash schools like ODU and Liberty. If ODU wants to play VT 15 times, 14 in Lane and 1 in DC or something is what we should do. Traveling there is BS and a lose/lose situation. Liberty even more laughable. Let them bus 2 whole hours and play in Lane to 3x as many people. Makes too much sense of course.
Glad to be gone with this series! I can't imagine what Weaver was thinking when he made this deal. Any ideas?
I'll take...
Michigan (because you know why)
Tenn (seems like it could be great rivalry)
Maryland (we used to pound them anyway, good location for alumni)
UCF (I like visiting Florida and they are new Boise)
Texas A&M (they are sister/brother school with good reputation)
Tamu I like but dont think they have openings
We have future games with Maryland in the late 20s coming up. Michigan was on Weaver's radar, but I think that got cancelled.
Sorry I'm late, but still wanted to say:
