Offense just never runs a hot route on a blitz. It is beyond their ability.
The jet sweep is so predictable. You've gotta fake it sometimes and either run the QB or have an RPO based off of it. Teams are just selling out for the jet sweep hard against us.
And here I was hoping that a bye week with Jerry Kill would spice up the offense, even a tiny bit.
The jet sweep exists to help set up other things. The thing I can't figure out is why we seem to only have on blocker trying to block 3-4 guys.

Plays look broken before the defense even makes contact. Taking too long to develop and many times going to wrong side of the field like the jet sweep to the short side. Then Willis deciding to run on the final play just infuriated me as there was no chance he was getting 9 yards there. Even if there didnt appear to be something open, at that point of the field giving it two more seconds to pass rather then surrender run at least gives us a chance at first down. Taking a sack there because of field position isnt terrible either with Bradfords leg. At least the defense looked good out the gate.

Agree with you on slow developing plays. I went back and watched some games from 2016, and the difference in overall speed and how fast everyone played is night and day. We just look slow and predictable.

I can live with mistakes if we are building toward something. It is not readily apparent what the target is.
This is what really gets me. I understand that VT doesn't have the money to fire Fuente nor the clout to pull a big name coach in the off season. But this staff just hasn't demonstrated any kind of progress in any way over the 4 years they've been in Blacksburg. We really need to move in a new direction sooner than later because the longer we flounder with no discernable plan or identity the harder it'll be to turn it around and get back to competing in the ACC.

I am concerned that Fuente needs to do more than just hire Kill. He may need to let go of a few assistants. Not understanding why the coaches put Hooker and Patterson in when they did unless Willis was hurt. Even then it's the coaches fault for not developing the two guys behind Willis so that they are game ready. I will concede the team is young, but the players are playing undisciplined and don't look prepared.
If Fuente doesn't make staff adjustments after this year, the writing is on the wall. He's going to sink with his ship.

I don't think play calling is the biggest issue. What I'm really concerned with is the complete lack of progress made by the offense in 4 years. On day one the coaches came in saying they wanted to get the running game going. It hasnt improved at all. The player development seems non existent. Nothing about this team shows any sort of progress towards some goal. There is no identity. No direction. I don't care how good or bad the calls are. The lack of development is a major concern. Worrying about play calling is missing the forest for the trees

Willis is a 5th yr Sr. who makes Fr. mistakes. HH is in his 3rd year in the program and has barely seen the field. And QP is an Elite 11 who hasn't made any threat of breaking into the QB1 conversation.

There is nothing to gain this year by playing him other than maybe one or two more wins. Let the young guys get experience and provide us with a glimmer of hope for the next couple years. It would be a different story if we were actually competing for anything.

Rough night.... first I'm not an alumni but just someone that grew up in the central Virginia area and have always loved VT football. VT football to me is a connection back home as I joined the Marine Corps back in 2000 and have been on the West Coast ever since. I honestly feel like I'm losing that connection for the first time as even in the Beamer twilight years we still fought and scracted in ever game. I think Fuente isn't the right person for this job as we need someone that deep down gives a shit about the area and what are true roots are the blue collar style. I turned off a game for the first time in 20 years and it sucks but I'm just ashamed of what our beloved program has become. I love what the school represents and hope that or AD can see that this isn't a good relationship and moves on.

And there are cost associated with looking for a replacement. We are a small family owned company so I what it is costing us is big. The $15 mil to let him go right now pales in comparison to me in what our program stands to lose from lost tickets revenue, concession sales, merchandise, etc. Recruiting continues to slip which will cost us in the future. Yeah that high powered offense we were promised is good for 3 points a half against duke at home, but it's mosly Bud.
The whole team was awful. I didn't say mostly Bud but it certainly includes Bud and he would absolutely agree with that statement. We've given up 49 to ODU, 45 to ND, 49 to GT, 52 to Pitt, 38 to Miami, 35 to Cincy, 35 to BC, and now 45 to Duke in the last 15 games. That's 8 games allowing 35+ points with sacks and turnovers at career lows for a Bud defense.
We can all agree the offense sucks while also acknowledging the lunch pail defense has become completely unrecognizable.
You've posted about the defense in multiple threads. In your eyes, if one coach wasn't fit for his role and needed to be replaced, who is it, Bud or Cornelsen? Both?
Cornelsen has reached no-brainer status at this point and has to go in the off-season at a minimum. If Cornelsen was fired tomorrow, I'd be completely fine with it. The offense is horribly underperforming and he doesn't have a track record of success to fall back on.
Since Foster already announced his retirement at the end of the season and has such a strong track record and connection to VT, I think he's earned the right to finish things out. This defense is flat out awful though. If Foster hadn't announced his retirement and the defense kept performing at this level, we'd be in a really uncomfortable situation at the end of the season. You could probably talk me into another season but I wouldn't feel very optimistic about it.
Honestly I'm not trying to defend the offense but I truly believe that the defense is broken, and perhaps irreparably so, as well.

Our worst ever A.C.C. loss. We've only had two 30+ losses in the ACC and both have come under Fuente. Plus a 24 point loss to Miami last year too. 🤦♂️

Not making excuses for the majority of the game but you seen what happened when they were fresh at the start of the game. If the offense is so inept that the defense can barely catch their breath on the sideline eventually they are going to wear down.

Agreed. I think at this point he's pretty completely lost the biggest part of the fan base. And I wouldn't be surprised if the big donors are getting really restless too. I know the buyout is steep, but if the people who fund this program have had enough, they will not support keeping him and pony up, forcing Whit's hand.

Interesting stat, Fuente owns the two worst ACC losses since Tech joined the ACC (-35 and -30). Points wise that is, haven't forgotten the Wake Forest game............

Who on this coaching staff could successfully step in as the interim head coach? I used to think Bud Foster, but after this performance I no longer feel this way. I know that Fuente is not getting fired. I am just asking hypothetically. I don't believe there is anyone in this current staff who could step in as interim.

The reason I was slow to the party to replace Frank, though I finally got there, was because the odds of replacing him at the same or higher level were very poor.
Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Texas, USC, ND, Oklahoma, Nebraska, FSU and more...ALL went or are going through this.
I'm not ready to say Fuente can't get it done, but he'll need to make significant changes pronto...if he still has a job. Tell the fans that we're using the season to develop for the future; take over the play calling; play aggressive in all 3 phases; and play the kids.

Our season has now been reduced to beating UVA. After yesterday... even Stinespring starts to look good.
Players aren't executing. Overplaying their position and out of position. It's like they are just learning to play the game, and not very well.

It's too easy being an arm chair analyst, but "Come'on Man!" They are supposed to be recruited football players.
We were thoroughly out schemed and out coached. The defense certainly had some bad plays/busted assignments and appeared to either give up or just be gased at the end. While the game was still within a few scores, I don't remember seeing too many plays where we physically lost one on one battles that resulted in us losing, which is disheartening. I'm assuming it was due to the tempo, but bud did not seem to make any adjustments or call many blitzes/ coverages. How many times can you give up the 5-7 yard curl to the tight end? And why do we still have these gap fit errors that result in easy untouched TDs? Our offense is so predictable and executed very poorly. This has never been more apparent then when watching duke with a high level of execution and controlling the defense with tempo. We now will exclusively call the same short crossing route on third down right into the underneath zone. We exclusively run the ball when a QB not named Willis is in the game. Also, I appreciate trying to establish the run, but not when they are crowding the box and your team is poor at executing it. They schemed and took advantage of our over pursuit and aggression on the first two TDs, why can't our offensive masterminds call anything like this? Their D end is consistently crashing down and ignoring the qb. I can remember maybe 3 passes that pushed the ball down field (which is willis' only strength) even when we were down by 3+ TDs. I don't put this one on the players. We need some changes at top. Fuentes needs to start calling plays or something. I can't see this team winning a single acc game.
