Just curious... Does anyone remember the Football teams' entrance pre-Sandman? For some of you that have only been exposed to the Hokies coming out to Enter Sandman, there was a time before... It wasn't near as epic of an entrance, but it was decent. It's almost a lost memory of VT Football. Would anyone have video/audio of the old entrace?
Just curious of how many of you remember..
Also, Does anyone remember these small traditions:
1) Throwing empty CocaCola Cups after a Touchdown
2) Throwing Dominos Pizza Boxes after a Touchdown
3) The Highty Tighties playing the Goodbye Song as VT ends the game in a Victory.

I think there was a time when Bud Foster would run out on the field and tear off his shirt Hulk-style while pointing at the opposing team bench before tearing into a Turkey Leg and shotgunning a PBR to the raucous delight of the screaming crowd; but P.E.T.A. got involved and it turned into this whole thing, so they fell back on the tamer "Enter Sandman". Not sure if this actually happened, memory is a little foggy after a decade plus of Hokie games @ Lane.
p.s. Who's idea was it to take "Home of the Fighting Gobblers" off of the fascade of Lane? I see no reason why we can't bring it back.
Yes, bring that back, along with the 'T' inside the 'V' Logo, and the old Gobbler Logo - maybe these will happen after Steger is out, since he 'retired' them
Of all the new helmet designs, why didn't the old gobbler logo not get some run? I am a fan of the Hokie Stone, the Turkey Tracks, the old inverted T-inside-the-V, but there have been some misses: THe maroon Turkey disaster on the white helmets. People love throwbacks, bring back the fighting Gobbler.
I love the fighting gobbler logo. Still holds up. It think a monochrome maroon helmet with the fighting gobbler also maroon but matte would be so dope.
I googled monochrome and couldn't find anything for pictures. Is that the same as hydrochrome helmets?
referring to the one I mocked up last year?
Oh I like this one...
You mean this?
from the Butgers game last year.
I think he means that helmet with a maroon gobbler to go with the maroon helmet. Kinda like a embossed look maybe? Where is Cruhland to help with the idea?
I wasn't a fan of those during the game. It just looked like an Orange blob to me.
My lobbying for bringing back my name-sake has fallen on deaf ears. The best we got was the Bowl Helmets last season.
Those were spectacular.
please no "TV" logo - we get enough "va tech". we don't need people asking about TV again . . .
retired meaning - wait 3 or four years for new students so they are freshly retro again.

This looks to be above a street level entrace, guess they can keep it on the building, but nothing too high on the wall. Nice to see if back though.
its on the interior now... I think its great it was saved at all.
I had 2 seasons prior to Enter Sandman and I cannot recall the entrance at all. I just remember temporary North stands and a doinky scoreboard behind the south endzone
Yep, back when the SEZ had wooden bleachers
Old South End Zone with "Doinky" Scoreboard from 2000

North Endzone Pre-Bleachers (1998):

Very nice, sir. Terrific find! I took a piece of the maroon and orange paint from the endzone after the BC win.
I was right there with you then. I got a nice big ole piece of turf that day.
I was a couple of feet from the goal post when it came down too!
I grabbed some turf too - gave it to my dad to plant- still growing strong in a protected part of the yard.
That endzone paint...
i remember thwe pizza boxes... i think it was short lived though...
they stopped selling them in 1990 I think.
Pizza boxes happened well into the 90's, want to say until 2000 hit.
The cups weren't cool, especially since a lot of people left the ice in it or other fluids...
I remeber evey cup we had in our house for 3 years was he plastic cups from football games-
do they still sell them (with coke) at games?
Yep.
Yes and with Coke! but they're not as cool as they used to be. Better graphics, but the old school ones were great. I think the cup throwing must have stopped around the 2001 timeframe - I was asked to leave for throwing a cup after a touchdown in 2001
my buddy got tossed for chucking a pizza box way back when-
funny because about 30 people around him were throwing them and
he was singled out by a cop and escorted out.
Does anybody else remember the washer fluid giveaway at Basketball and Football games? I think it was 70 points in basketball and everyone got free washer fluid and 28 points in football.
Yep! I had the cleanest windshield in Blacksburg. Even worked as a cleaning agent for wiping away WVU scum..
This was a little later, but I remember the free washer fluid giveaway in 2006 if we scored a touchdown on our first possession of the second half...and it NEVER happened! I saw a shirt that season that said "Sean Glennon owes me washer fluid".
I think it happened once. We all got irrationally happy about free washer fluid.
Speak for yourself, dweeb; THAT WAS AWESOME.
EDIT: *sarcasm*
80 points in Basketball: Free Burger at BK
90 points: free burger and fries
100 points: free COMBO!!
After 70 or so points it didn't matter how much lead they had, the whole crowd chanted "burgers", then so on to "fries" and "soda".
I threw up at the BK near main street and upper quad. Was after I got banned. Your post brought that memory back...
They changed it while I was in college. One game, we were really close, and Beamer (being the sportsman he is) kicked a damn field goal. We finished one point shy. I really needed a bottle of washer fluid, too.
Answer to the entrance revealed.
The team would run out to the Marching Virginians playing 2001: A Space Oddysey - The cheerleaders lined up with the H-O-K-I-E-S Flags, skipper was near the entrance, and then we ran out at the peak of the song, and right after Skipper kaboomed.
The Na Na Hey Hey thing has made a small comeback, but for women's basketball. We handle the pep band duties for them, and in the second half, when the opposing team shoots free throws on the basket nearest us, we sing (badly) as they shoot. Last year, I thought it would be a good idea, since the game was well in hand (a rare occasion), to sing Na Na Hey Hey as they took their free throws. The band started it, the rest of the fans (of which there were a surprising amount) joined in, and Major MacNeill shot me a look that made me think I was about to be publicly hanged. Needless to say, we'll be doing it again.
I know that look. It's almost as bad as when Army's Sergeant Major (Green Beret for all non-cadet's info) stops or Navy's Gunny starts smiling. It all means someone's life is about to snuff it.
I've been on the receiving end of that look.
Marine Gunny and Master Chief.
