Someone called someone a moron which oh my, hurts so bad, and we live in an age where calling someone a moron literally has some people claiming the truly offended party should be literal morons, and the cycle of offense spins like some twisted moralistic perpetual motion machine.
There was a refreshing clarity to people being able to just say whatever they liked back in the day.

As for being upset with someone from the VT administration for their opinion on this, I couldn't care less what they think, one way or the other. Everybody can have an opinion on that.
As for being mad at ESPN, what they should be called out for is cutting away from the game before this game was over. I mean, we watched over 4 hours, and they cut away before the last play of the game.
To be fair, the ref did clearly say "the game is over" and started walking off the field.
I feel like that mess is on the refs.
When they cut away, there seemed to be some doubt about whether it was over. Then, ESPN interrupted the next game to say, "Oh, yeah, they put one second back on the clock and ran another play. Here's the replay."
Anybody watching from home knew it wasn't resolved before they cut away, and the network folks knew that as well. They should have stayed the additional 60 seconds, or five minutes if necessary, until it was officially resolved.
Put another way, if it had been the Georgia - Tennessee game, they'd have given it the extra time.
True, but when an official says "the game is over", that's pretty definitive. Literally every other time I've seen a ref make that statement, the game was truly over. If there was doubt at the officiating level, then they should have done the reviews before making the announcement.
If the ref hadn't made that statement, I'm sure ESPN would have stayed with the broadcast.
Except just a couple of weeks ago in the ACC no less this very scenario played out. Unfortunately for UNC in that situation, one second wasn't added to the clock. Point being, there was still doubt even though the official said "the game is over".
I know all of us here on the TKP live game thread were still wondering if the game was over when they cut away. It didn't seem all that buttoned up to us, and it turned out not to be.
Another 60 seconds would have cleared up whether that was the case or not. They were clearly in a bit of a hurry. As it stands, too much of a hurry.
I'm sure when the ref said "the game is over", someone pressed a button that started a countdown timer for the announcers to wrap everything up, and show the switching graphic and change to the other feed, so not only did the first crew get to say their goodbyes but the second crew also got to welcome the new viewers of their game. Seems it wasn't until only the last few seconds before the switch was supposed to happen that there was any doubt that anything might change, at which point it was probably too late to stop the switch.
My biggest gripe with ESPN is that they didn't pull up that side-by-side view shortly thereafter, and send the audio back over for the final play. However, the ref probably shouldn't have said anything quite so definitively, so quickly. At least give the booth a chance to buzz down, if you aren't going to call for a review yourself.
I was watching on espnplayer.com (Europe's stream) and right after they said "hang on" it just came up with the "Your broadcast is in a commercial break" so I just waited. They came back live and showed the play live there and then the sideline reporter interviewed Fuente, and they showed the defense grabbing grass for the lunch pail. It's a shame they didn't show it everywhere.
That's the feed they have posted as the game replay. I assume if you were specifically watching the game stream online you saw that, but if you were watching on the TV or specifically the ESPN stream you got switched to UGA-UT.

Shades of the infamous NFL "Heidi game" from maybe '68, I think. Miami could have tied the game for overtime, or even won it outright with that 1 second. Unbelievable.
I get him being excited about college football, the game, and his "first Hail Mary" and he seems to be a good color commentary guy, but it wasn't like it was some Doug Flute-esq hail marry to win the game. It was done by a team down 28-0 going to half.
A single play alone would be whatever. The issue to me was that they were homering miami the entire game and then this was the "holy crap they really are miami fans"
There was one point where he literally whined like a 5 year old to say "Why aren't they running the ball?" He was upset because a string of Miami's passes had been broken up. That's when I muted the TV.

I think that high five was more for his partner. When watching the replay it came across to me as "see I told ya to hang in there buddy, your team finally scored".
Hail Marys are fun to watch even if they go against, I just didn't need to see it 400 times. Also didn't see why it was necessary to show their reaction in the booth.
Edit: The more I think about this, was there any emotion shown when Keene caught his third TD or Mitchell's long reception in the 4th. We won't know because we didn't see booth reactions on those plays. The point is "don't become part of the story".

Yeah a lot of people are weirdly defending him in this thread. Like don't get me wrong, I don't care remotely enough about announcers to whine to them directly on twitter because I felt they did poorly. So I agree with everyone else in that respect. But using unnamed sources to basically call VT fans morons is pretty petty and immature.
Besides, I don't know how anyone could have watched this game and thought they were decent. They couldn't even pronounce half the names correctly on either side (or the word "produce" apparently). The energy levels when VT had a big play vs when Miami did was incredibly jarring, and in general they had way less to say about VT than they did about Miami. Not only that but they barely had anything useful to contribute in terms of analysis in general. Sorry but they sucked

There were so many things wrong with the commentating it was seriously bewildering. Not even bad stuff per se, but things that were just strange. Poorly singing Bob Marley after showing a black fan with dreads, asking if Miami were going to go for it on a 3rd down, poor understanding of the rules, and so much more. Miami fans were just as displeased with these announcers as we were. It was just overall bad.

This is one area where I appreciate Hernstreit's approach for games in general, but specifically when he's calling an OSU game. He can get excited, but never to the point where I want to turn off a game or go on a twitter rant.
Also, with all the other challenges we have as a program and a fan base I think we have other things to worry about besides one broadcaster's approach to game day. Lets worry about winning games and less about how the game we won was broadcast (except for that last play... ESPN owes both schools an apology for cutting to the GA/Tenn game early).

As an announcer I think you have to hope for a competitive game. Without the hail mary do they score right after halftime? No one wants to watch a 54-0 game unless you're team is the 54. So you should be happy about a team getting back in the game. It makes your job more fun.
This was nothing compared to ND announcers, or whomever called the ODU game last year that sounded like they were on ODUs side from the kickoff.

I couldn't care less if the commentators are biased or not. Sometimes it's more fun to talk shit to the TV anyways. Only time it irritates me is if they aren't objective with penalty reviews.
If I recall, the accouncers last night were on our side with the Tisdale targeting call. I think they did a good job.
Mark Jones was more sided with VT than Dusty was during the targeting call, at least from my perspective. Dusty flip-flopped a handful of times with some confusing commentary. He incorrectly stated the rules, said by the letter of the law it should be an ejection, but that he didn't think it should be an ejection, stated the rules again (more accurately), and then that he thought maybe they will overturn the ejection.
I hate hate hate watching games where the announcers are clearly rooting for the other team the entire time. I'm already stressed out enough without feeling like the announcers (and in some cases the refs) have money on the other team.
For example - the exchange of back to back roughing the passer potentials: we have a 3rd down and trevon hill hits hooker in the knees way after the throw "wow great effort by hill" 3 plays later we get a pick and the roughing called on hewitt (not a dmart play but pretty vanilla) "wow what an egregious roughing the passer"
You know what sucked about the announcers? Them telling the same HH story multiple times. In case you weren't paying attention, HH was in the transfer portal and thinking about going to NC A&T last off-season.
They also used the phrase "dying moments of the game" a lot.
Once, it's a clever turn of phrase to change up the usual commentary. After that, it just sounds like they found something "cool" and want to run with it.
Also, "dying moments of the game" is not when the game is within one score with a team driving to try to even it up. Reserve that turn of phrase for the running plays to wind down the clock until victory formation time.

The commentators were atrocious and so pro-miami it was hard to watch. How many Miami names did they mispronounce? They got about 4 or 5 of our names wrong which shows they didn't prepare well. The way he's defending himself on social media is childish and unprofessional. Period.

It might be the only thing I know for sure about this team, but they have proven over the past year that they can take any shot and come back swinging.

A reminder too that Mark Jones is the guy who is banned from calling Washington games because he was a central part of the whole 'cupcake' shit a few years ago where @ a UW game the sideline guy literally pulled out cupcakes and they then went to spend a few minutes hating on their OOC. Then he got on twitter when they lost to Auburn the next year asking when they were gonna play Montana.
So it just being a game @Miami isnt necessarily enough to cause the disparity in energy level/depth of information about the two teams. But it is clear both guys treat programs differently beyond what anyone would say is probably reasonable since you will never have a perfectly detached announcer.

I didn't lose any sleep over any of the broadcast (including the final, final play because I stuck with the broadcast and I saw it - well, at least, the part of it they showed after the cut back).
But way more than a few times during the game, I found myself muttering "are these guys serious with the 90's Miami love?"
As I am sitting watching Dal/GB, with Buck and Aikman as announcers, I wonder if Dallas had a hail mary to win the game, would we see video of Buck and Aikman high/low-fiving? It's not a good look. That being said, it doesn't bother me that they did this, but the producer who thought that it was a good idea to put it on the air should be getting heat from the mothership for it. It just goes to show that if your game isn't considered a big game, you don't get the A-team broadcasters. And these guys are definitely not the A-team.

Maybe I'm odd, but I strongly dislike announcers who show a bias in broadcasts. Get excited? Absolutely. But for both teams, it's your job. You're paid to cover the game, not one team. If I want bias, I'd listen to the team's radio broadcasts.

I disagree - I think bias is 1. natural in sports and 2. makes it more exciting. The problem with this broadcast wasn't bias, it was poor quality. A biased announcer will usually bring some level of local insight into what's going right or wrong for the team which makes it more interesting. These knuckleheads didn't do that, which is why it's different than Herby talking about his Buckeyes.
I just mute the tv and pause the game long enough for laaser and burnop to catch up. I dont mind their bias at all.

Social media like any tool is what you make of it. Social media like twitter and Facebook have literally saved lives both individually and in groups. It is a great system for public safety agencies to be able to spread news and information faster and more effectively than the traditional methods for example.

There are a lot of tools in this world, but my perspective is that twitter, in particular, is a pernicious self involved platform for pernicious self involved people who seem unable to live life without constant anonymous interaction with people they'll never meet. It is bizarre to me and just seems so damned middle schoolish that I don't take it seriously.
This, though, is just me. Saved lives? Well, maybe so. Caused loss of life? I'd bet so. Spreading false and misleading information as often as not isn't a good thing and that's my impression of twitter. That's a pretty damning indictment of all of us who use Twitter. Like anything else in life, it is what you make it. My Twitter presence is largely professional. I follow news, professional societies, colleagues, and people of repute in my field, a few friends, and VT sports. I get more information, faster, on Twitter than any other source. It's becoming an important tool in networking and has benefitted my professional career several times. So does that make me self-involved? I'm interacting with people I know in most cases, at least by reputation, but many of whom I've actually met directly because of Twitter.
If you choose not to use it, that's fine, but don't be so scornful of those of us who do. There are idiots everywhere. Doesn't mean we all are.
Without the idiots, twitter wouldn't exist. The sensationalism is what keep people flocking to it. The critical mass created by said idiots is what supports the infrastructure allowing for level headed users like yourself to take advantage of that and gain some benefit.

My experiences with twitter are not positive, and if you find joy in it, more power to you, but I associate twitter with the less savory use of it, and while I did go too far, perhaps, in emphasizing my distaste by painting with too broad a brush, my dislike of it in the whole is impossible for me to ignore, especially when reminded daily of its misuse. I think I understand it a whole lot better than you seem to think I do, and when another example of stupidity on twitter comes up, I am sometimes motivated to speak out. I'd have been glad to leave it as twitter is evil, but I can be an argumentative sumbitch, and not always moderate when my disgust is visceral.

In any case, I largely agree that Twitter (and most other social media, really) is a breeding ground for radicalism, where people now have both the freedom to express their unsavory opinions and visibility to others that share them. However, the majority of people that use the platform are just trying to connect with other like-minded, non-radical people to share their thoughts and ideas.
To someone who doesn't use the platform, like yourself, you only see the 0.1% of people whose tweets go viral, generally due to some controversy, and painting the other 99.9% of tweeters with the same brush as those select few has a tendency rub people the wrong way.
Twitter can easily be used as a simple newsfeed if you are selective about who to follow.

I thought the broadcast was poor, biased and unprofessional. His reaction to some of the flak he got on twitter was somehow more unprofessional than the broadcast itself. He needs to change out of those petty pants and get some big boy britches. He's going to need thicker skin given his role.
That being said, lashing out at him directly on twitter is pretty lame too (I've got no problems with the comments on twitter otherwise). The guy had a bad day at the office, it happens. Folks just need to move along.

There are morons of all stripes on Twitter (including Hokie fans) and most other places (including the broadcast booth).
I thought it was much funnier when Mark Jones was calling certain plays "jet sweeps" when they were not. But I really attribute that to our reputation getting the best of us...
I went back and watched the game. I just didn't see anything outrageous. Whatever.
The only thing I'll say about it is that was the most awkward looking I've ever seen two dudes look while slapping five. Bro Cards should probably be turned in for at least a probationary period.
I watched the condensed game yesterday and it didn't seem nearly as bad as I remembered it.
Actually, I'll say another thing. I think it would make a commentary more colorful if one of the commentators was an alumni and did kind of Homer it up just a little.
If Frank Beamer was hired by ESPN and was doing a Tech game, I think I'd be a little disappointed if he DIDN'T show bias. HIs impartiality would feel contrived.
I've always been a firm believer that there should be an "R Rated Telecast", similar to SAP, where you can tune in and listen to (in this instance) two alumni going toe to toe in the broadcast booth, shit talking, getting emotions, and calling that game like average Joes would without the "professionalism" that get's boring and overplayed in typical broadcasts.

Dusty was wearing Miami on his forehead the entire game. The high five just confirmed what everyone knew. He needs to be more professional and not go on a twitter rant. Just let it drop and move on. I myself am not concerned. It is hard for announcers to be completely neutral. If you like a team it will show. It's human nature. The high five was unsavory. But to call VT fans moronic is just stupid.
