Virginia Tech Wrestling 2019/2020 Preview

Time to talk about the best trending sports program in Blacksburg; Hokie Wrestling. My one wish for TKP, is to be more of a forum for all Virginia Tech sports. If it did, then I believe it could be the premier VT sports forum on the web. But what better way to get your wish, than to do it yourself. So this is gonna be your quick season preview of Virginia Tech Wrestling.

Recap of '18/'19 Season:

It was arguably the most exciting wrestling season in program history; Virginia Tech had its first individual NCAA champion in r-FR Mehki Lewis. The 8-seed went through a gauntlet of talent, beating the 1st-seed, 4th-seed, and finally the 2nd-seed to win the title for 165lbs.

As a team, they began the season ranked 10th and ended 14th, with an overall dual record of 9-5 and a 3-2 dual conference record. VT finished 2nd in the ACC Tournament with 81 points (NC St was 1st) and 11th in the NCAA Tournament with 50 points. If you ask a fan, last season was a little disappointing with the conference record. This was mainly due to the roster being an enigma. They had three wrestlers that were transfers: Korbin Meyers, Tom Sleigh, and Billy Miller.

Examining the '19/'20 roster and schedule

Projected Lineup:
125lbs: #7/#9 Korbin Meyers, r-SR
133lbs: #18/NR Collin Gerardi, r-FR
141lbs: #18/#15 Mitch Moore, SO
149lbs: #18/#7 Brent Moore, r-JR
157lbs: #17/#18/ B.C Laprade, r-JR
165lbs: #4/#4 David McFadden, r-SR
174lbs: Cody Hughes, r-SR
184lbs: #8/#11 Hunter Bolen, r-SO
197lbs: Cody Howard, r-FR
285lbs: John Borst, r-SO

A quick look at this line up shows a healthy mix of youth and experience. The Hokies "officially" return seven starters. I say "officially" as Brent Moore (2018: 141lbs) and Hunter Bolen (2018 ACC Freshmen of the Year: 174lbs) took redshirt years for 2018/2019, after previously starting. Cody Hughes also has a couple spot starts under his belt from the 2018/2019 season. But, the elephant in the room is how our defending champ is off the projected lineup. This is due to him taking an Olympic Redshirt as he gets ready for the Olympic Trials. This is different from a regular, school issued redshirt (which Lewis has already been granted) which allows him to participate in Olympic training and practices. This year, the strength of Virginia Tech's line up is more focused on the lower to mid weights. This is going way from the usual murders row at heavy weights, which Virginia Tech rolls out.

The biggest weight changes to focus on are Korbin Meyers cutting from 133 to 125 and David McFadden returning to 165 from 174. I'll discuss more on individual wrestlers with independent posts in the future. But, for me, the wrestler to watch is Collin Gerardi. He went 17-6 wrestling unattached last year

Flowrestling and WIN preseason rankings put Virginia Tech #17. Intermat and NCAA has yet to update its rankings for the NWCA. I will not be putting the Wrestle Stat or Open Mat rankings. Wrestle Stat focuses on head-to-head competition as well as records between similar competition (it's a great analytical site).

I will give a quick synopsis of the bouts on their individual match dates. The matches to circle on the calendar are: Missouri (first match, at home, revenge), Cornell (perennial power, has four Olympic Redshirts this year), and NC State/Pitt (both AWAY matches and ACC Championship contenders). Overall the schedule is solid. It's not overly daunting and provides plenty of marquee match ups in Blacksburg. One thing to note, is that the Virginia Duals has been left off the schedule. Nothing has been mentioned as of why, but I believe it will help. It will give the team a chance to rest before coming back to the home state and challenge the ACC teams.

I hope this provides some insight and breeds more Hokie Wrestling fans. Quick plug, if you wish to see wrestling continue its success either support by attending matches (it's free) or donating to the Southeast Regional Training Center (SERTC) where our wrestlers train all year round!

Come on Lets go Hokies...I want to see McFadden go out with the NCAA Championship

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Caveat: I know nothing about college wrestling scoring, match set-up, etc...

-Will Mekhi Lewis wrestle for VT after his Olympic redshirt year?
-Are there pre-season rankings?
-How does the scoring for the NCAA Tournament work? Each team gets 1 representative? Or does the ACC champion advance only etc...

-Yes he will.
-Yes, the post says we are #17
-Each conference gets a number of auto qualifiers through placing in the end of season conference tournament. This account for about 290 of the wrestlers in the tournament over all the weight classes. Then there are about 40 at large bids that are handed out to round out the tournament. For Hokies that means you typically need to place 1st or 2nd in the ACC tournament to make the NCAAs.

I wanted to add some clarification to the third answer on NCAA tournament scoring and qualification.

33 wrestlers qualify at each weight class for the NCAA tournament. Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, RPI, and coaches' rankings to earn automatic qualification (auto-bid) allocations for the conference, and those auto-bids are awarded based on conference tournament results. The remaining spots, 45 in 2019, are considered at-large bids and assigned to wrestlers in any weight class (up to a maximum of 33 per class) by the committee.

For example, if the ACC has 4 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 at heavyweight and 2 wrestlers outside the top 30, then it would likely receive 4 auto-bids at that weight. If in the conference tournament, the #5 ranked heavyweight finishes 4th while the #4 ranked heavyweight finished 6th, the #5 heavyweight automatically qualifes and the #4 heavyweight would have to hope for an at-large bid.

Finally I feel the need to mention that last year was the first year which every wrestler in the bracket was seeded (1-33), as opposed to previous years where the top 16 were seeded and the remaining opponents were randomly drawn.

As far as team scoring, advancing in the championship (winner's) bracket is 1 point and advancing in the consolation (loser's) bracket is 0.5 point. Bonus points are earned as follows:

  • fall, forfeit, default, disqualification: 2 points
  • tech fall (w/ near fall points): 1.5 points
  • tech fall (w/o near fall points): 1 point
  • major decision: 1 point

Lastly, wrestlers can earn points by placing in the Top 8 (All-American). Placement points are as follows:

  • 1st place: 16 points
  • 2nd place: 12 points
  • 3rd place: 10 points
  • 4th place: 9 points
  • 5th place: 7 points
  • 6th place: 6 points
  • 7th place: 4 points
  • 8th place: 3 points

Couple days late, but thanks to all for the info!

Mekhi is taking an OR. Mcfadden is dropping back down into his weight class.
Yes.
NCAA scores for advancement with bonus points for maj dec., tech fall, and pin. All team members that make it to nationals count towards the team totals.
Each conference gets a certain allotment for each weight class based on reg season rankings/performance. That allotment is typically seleceted based on ACC tournament performance. There is more into it, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the post. I'll put Feb 2 on the calendar to show some support vs ODU.

Great write up.
Should be an interesting season with us and NCST dueling for the ACC again.
Hoping Dave can be the first 4 time all American this year, I think dropping back down will do wonders for him. He never seemed to be as dominate up at 74 as he is at 65.
I think the biggest wildcards are seeing how the Moores are coming along. I think they both could be sleepers in their weights, especially if Brent is fully recovered.
I like seeing them with two Big10s on the schedule, that's the level you going to have to compete with if you want to make it to the team podium.

I agree about the Moore's being definite sleepers. Both of them showed some serious potential in their first seasons. I'm also really excited to see Hunter Bolen after he had a great freshman year and lit it up during his redshirt season.

I'm gonna talk about it more on the individual wrestler's post, but I want to see how much Mitch's offense has grown this off season.

If he has added on to his tie-up and throws with some solid leg shots....then look out

Excellent post. I'll try to follow wrestling more this year than last year.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Wow, great write-up. Looking forward to the new season.

If I may suggest an edit:

"Cornell (perineal power that has four Olympic Redshirts this year)"

Methinks that taint the word you want there, but maybe you know some Cornell dudes and they are all a bunch of grundles.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

Lol I see what you did there. Good catch.
