It has been clear all season that the fans want "Stick It In" back. The directors of The Marching Virginians knew that if the drumline played the cheer, the stadium would go absolutely wild, completely changing the atmosphere of a tense, nervous crowd to one that's energized and hyped-up. So after a few conversations with Virginia Tech Athletics, the band directors, Dr. Polly Middleton and Chad Reep, came to the band with a very hesitant suggestion that maybe, just maybe, they might actually play it.

I really dislike the 99 jerseys. Always have - regardless of the nostalgia. Can't stand the mismatched colors of the jersey/shoulder numbers.

The old people that thought it was lame have aged out of the donation market. The new younger base doesn't care and wants it back. It checks out!
To be fair, most old people I know want it back too.
Being old, 72 both my wife 77 and I can't wait for Stick it In. We agree with you young'uns.
As a younger old guy than I thought (only 69), I guess I'm not old enough to have wanted to can Stick It In. I did see a few instances of perhaps overly suggestive dancing from some yutes near me just before it was canned, but they were good looking young ladies and I had absolutely NO problem with it, but will admit that for some folks, not just oldsters, it might have been a bit unsettling at a family venue. It's not like the chant was an old school tradition or anything, but it was pretty damned cool and I loved it.

From what I remember it was done away with shortly after we joined the ACC because some curmudgeon NC State fan wrote a strongly worded letter about it being offensive.
Nope. The last time it was played was on Clemson Thursday night game in 2006. My friend was in the band and ESPN put him on TV thrusting his hips to Stick-It-In. That was literally the last time it was played in the stadium.
The really old VT fans wrote letters and called into radio shows about how upset they were that we had such song and dance at the school. Weaver bowed down to the older demographic.
I joined the MV's in 2007 and I'm pretty sure we played it at the ECU game that year before it was officially banned.

I believe Weaver wanted to discontinue it before the 2007 season post-4/16 due to more eyes being on the football team. I saw that in an article somewhere.
Weaver did a lot of good things for the football program but he also did a lot that hurt us. We couldn't have asked for a better successor in Whit.
Weaver was AD during a time when the athletic department could run itself. The football games sold out every week and more than made up for our horrendous basketball team. In 2012, when the sellouts stopped happening in football and he made the JJ hire in basketball, it really set us back. We still haven't fully recovered from 2012.
Again, I'd like to see an age demographic on donations. I do wonder if what you say is correct about that, but I must agree that I always looked forward to hearing the band start the song low and then increase the volume as the fans chimed in. It wasn't disrespectful, really, and gave everyone an extra chance to voice appreciation/relief for the win. You just can't take the fun out of a football game and not expect folks to simmer about it. As for our visitors, hey, losing has consequences, get over it!
Things too note about this graph, as GenX and Boomers get closer to retirement or are retired, people are living longer then they ever have before. With this extra longevity however, comes increased cost of living. So what they originally saved to retire isn't going to cut it. It's why some people in that demographic are planning to work until they are 80.
So GenX and Boomers will continue to decrease and you would expect millenilals to increase over time.
Nope, not good enough. I am asking about age and donations, not disposable income for all the oldsters in the land. You are not wrong about your generalizations, but get specific to make your point to address my query. I'm not disputing your assertion, just have doubts. I am, however, more open minded than many. Change my mind. A bird in hand, ie donations, should not be dismissed lightly, while I do agree with targeting the next donor generations. Like I said, though, I'm not in the way of Stick It In or Na na na na, but then again, I've always been immature even in my dotage.
Again, the thing to remember with this graph is that "Traditionalists" or the "Silent Generation" are slowly dying off, and there are not much of them left.
The "Boomers" are expected to have higher life expectancy due to advancements in technology AND medicine, however; they are going to be paying more money to reach these later ages, and a good portion are planning to work until they are 80 to make ends meet. The cost of healthcare will come from their own pockets decreasing discretionary income, OR will come from Gen X who will be supporting their parents. Also some of them will not make it to the longer life expectancy, so naturally the number of people will start to decrease.
Again, I don't dispute the statistical generalizations, just interested in more specifics as to VT athletic donations (academic ones interest me as well) with respect to age.
All I can really tell you at this point is, that this is a big problem with pretty much every business right now, except the ones who digitally innovating their companies and pivoting to a more digital experience.
I cannot give you a breakdown of techs donor base without actually having the data. If I had it I would do it for you in a heart beat!
The younger millennials and GenZ aren't having as many children due to costs of living. It's one of the reasons there is a shortage in labor in pretty much every job you can think of. Technology helps that problem, as it makes it so that one person can do the jobs of 3 or 4.
Believe me, I get your point...again, in general. It's an obvious demo shift, and will take some shifting to deal with. Personally, I suspect ignoring the "shrivs" (really? Never heard that one before, and yes I know it wasn't your post) in favor of the younger folks might be a tad short sighted. I know a bunch of die hard Hokies, and most of them, apart from this forum, are pretty much my age. While my finances don't allow a lot of largess, many of them donate a ton of money to athletics. I do absolutely agree that we need to get the younger folks to transition from school to a life that includes donating, but it sure is tough when you are beginning a life, family, home, etc. Anyway, I do appreciate you taking the time to respond. I think if you weight the age of donors by the amount they donate the older generations likely give a lot more. There may be a lot more people under 50 willing to give hundreds or thousands, but it does not take many giving millions to out weigh that. Bequeathments, people coming into big inheritances, people who have built large business, people who have moved into top level executive positions, and people who have built strong investment incomes over time are more likely to be significantly older and have a lot more than $60,000 in disposable income. There are more graduates that are younger, and they are more likely to be vested in football as it was bigger part of their VT experience, and maybe a higher percentage over a moderate level of disposable income, so likely more donors in that group, but their will be a much smaller number of people from that group that can really rock the boat - say offer to buy out a coaches contract or up-fit a building.
You are right. The thing is that we need to start getting them to donate now at those smaller amounts as it kind of preps them to be bigger donors down the line. So as they grow into their bigger roles, they will donate more.
We are not really doing a great job of capturing them as is right now.
Without having the hard data in front of me, the last time I talked to Mr. Gabbart, the VAST majority of large donors/top members of the hokie club were in their late 50's-70's. Like 90%. Very few 30-45 year olds donate big money to VT athletics.

Parents like this amaze me. Your poor parenting choices don't need to dictate everyone's experience. There is nothing that states a college football game must be appropriate for a 5 yr old. That's clearly not the target demographic. But even if you get past his/her poor parental choice, it's totally the band playing stick it in that is really setting a bad example for your 5 yr old, not the day-long binge drinking, tailgating, swearing, etc. that goes hand in hand with college and professional sporting events.
If her 5 year old knows what that means in a sexual way, its the parent's fault. Agree. Clutch your pearls elsewhere. You are watching a testosterone filled game where players hit each other as hard as they can, and you cheer for it for entertainment. It's not a church clam bake, live in reality and stop teaching your 5 year old about sex.

I have been waiting for the return of Stick It In to Hokie football. Saturday's game made me feel like I was watching the old Hokies- tough, excited, hard hitting, work your ass off until its over football. Hearing the chant made the night just that much better. I may have shed a single tear.
And Homecoming is the best time to break it out since you have a higher percentage of alumni in the stands.
I wonder if Whit was intentional saving 'Bring Stick It In Back' card for a time when he really needed it. He could've brought it back years ago, but this is a time when the fan base really needed something to be excited about. Would've been a super saavy move.

It's not banned per se, it's use will be limited though. They used it in official emails already.
