So I was expecting terrible news about us losing some important players, but you're saying his job got much harder because Duke is going to continue to be elite?
Well... yeah. We might want to at least get back to the middle of the ACC pack before we worry about Duke standing in our way. Coach Johnson has enough challenges within our own program for the time being.

Of course I was stoked to beat WVU. I'm going to enjoy eveyr win but I'm not going to worry about the losses, including to USC Upstate. Hell, we had worse losses happen regularly in the Greenberg era even when we had teams that toppled #1 ranked opponents. My expectations for this year's squad are what I'd call appropriate, but I hope we have some good young players on the team who are fun to watch and play hard.

They are from the same conference as Florida Gulf Coast. Maybe they returned a lot of players to have gotten much better. I haven't bother looking up any of this so don't take it with much weight.

Yeah, I heard that a bit during the game and before the WVU game. To me, that sounds am bit like saying "FIU is from the same conference as ECU".
But, it is still very early in the season, and it seems like we have some decent young talent. It will be interesting to see what JJ can get out of them by the end of the year, regardless of our W-L totals. The way I see it, the season is only a bust if we get little to no development out of our freshmen, or if they all leave the program.

What I'm saying is that the programs around us continue to get elite talent. Meanwhile, JJ is essentially starting from scratch. Didn't mean to get anyone's blood pressure up, but the point stands: How in the world is JJ going to find any sort of success in the ACC, and how/when will the fanbase and administration know that he is or is not the man for the job? All I can say is that I don't envy the man.

That's kinda my point. Every year multiple ACC teams get several elite commits and we're pretty stoked if we get a top 100 guy or two, if we're really lucky. How does JJ do his job effectively when he's consistently going to be so outmatched in league play? Might wanna give Cutcliffe a call and ask for some pointers.

I hope JJ is as much a players coach as Ive been hearing because more and more prospects are looking at schools with coaches like this. I would much rather play for a fun coach than a Boeheim or Huggins. I think the Hokies could potentially be looking at top half of the ACC in two or three years

That's what I'm hoping for too. If we can get some talented guys (that might not be UNC/Duke-level talent, but still) who want to play for a charismatic coach in the ACC, we might have a pretty good shot.

The loss to USC-Upstate may not have been as bad as originally thought. They just lost to Tennessee yesterday in Knoxville by 9 and led a good part of the game. UT is picked 3rd in the SEC behind Kenoneanddonetucky and Florida.

Yep, for that one year that they are there, its gonna be a tough two games.
But every now and again a senior laden Hokie squad nips these top ranked Duke/UNC teams, so you never know.
Its cute to see guys so committed to each other

BUT WE BEAT WVU!!!!! I can't say enough how happy that makes me feel.
And if you DARE to put some snarky USC-Upstate comment below this, well, then you didn't enjoy that first part as much as I did.
I too will always enjoy any beating of the Mountaineers in any sport at any time.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "worse". USC-Upstate was #215 in the RPI last year... not sure that's any better than any of Greenberg's losses.

Valid point. Like I said, I didn't look much into it. I really do like your "big picture" mindset though for this season.

no different than any other year in the acc

Makes it that much more satisfying when we beat them.

Duke....is not JJs problem.
