157lb Weight Class Overview: The Next Step for BC Laprade

2018/2019 Season

BC LaPrade (r-JR, New Kent VA) was the 157lb starter last year and served admirably. He amassed a record of 18-11 (2-3 ACC), but was dealing with a neck injury in the middle of the season. It should be noted that only two of BC's losses were a major decision and a fall, both to the same wrestler (John Van Brill, Rutgers). The other nine losses were by decision. Laprade went on to place third in the ACC Championship and finished the NCAA tournament 1-2.

2019/2020 Season

BC LaPrade looks to make a big jump this year while staying at the same weight. The schedule for our 157lber is laborious though, as he has to wrestle four of the top five in his weight class (at least there is no more Jason Nolf). He is the type of wrestler that ranked opponents see as spooky; he is very aggressive and is a constant upset threat.

LaPrade has some of the best stamina on the team and is known for his offensive pressure. For shot set up, he will pop his opponent's head or hit them with a duck under that leads to shooting a high-C. He also has an outside sweep single. BC is also above average in scramble situations thanks to his large wingspan. When in down referee's position, he favors turning into the opponent's inside leg and snatching it for reversals.

BC Laprade does need to work on improving his high-C. At times he will reach for the shot, instead sliding under his opponent. If he does this, it will allow him to knock them off balance when lifting the crotch and upper leg. Also it's a natural reaction for wrestlers to keep their heads down when they reach. This allows the opponent to sprawl and trap Laprade's upper body under their own, which leads to opponents spinning around.

My prediction is BC will go 2-3 in the ACC. I'm bullish on freshman Justin McCoy (UVA), but this is the only toss up conference match for BC. Laprade will again qualify for the NCAA, and I see him making it past the second round before going to wrestlebacks.
