This year is about getting this team to play together as a... well, team.
Lots of talent. Lots of talent, and a lot of big bodies with a lot of talent. But they are just young and raw. In an ideal state (i.e. if this wasn't a team that lost all its veteran talent to the NBA, graduation, or transfer, a lot of these players would be redshirting or getting sheltered bench minutes. But, this kind of trial by fire is only going to make us that much better later this year and into next year.

Unfamiliar with the situation, but I've been in scrimmages like this before. I wouldn't be shocked if CMY was very experimental with lineups, minutes, etc. Richmond has a nice headline/morale booster to play for here. They beat a team that went to the NBA Sweet 16 last year.
The little guy always has more to play for in these exhibition games. We're getting our feet under us, it'll be fine.

Just a scrimmage but lets remember that Richmond isn't a cake walk basketball program either....the A10 might be the best mid major basketball conference top to bottom.

The A10 is strong, but Richmond was 12-20 last year so that is concerning. But like others have said, this will be a rebuilding year so we shouldn't read too much into it.

I actually go to a decent amount of Richmond basketball games. I thought they got noticeably better as the season went on last year by working some younger talent into the lineup. They have a few guys that can really shoot it. Not surprising that this would happen if CMY was experimenting as hypothesized above.

I said "might actually". I'm not expecting a win. Honestly I'm just hoping they show some sort of cohesion, something to build around over the following weeks. If they show flashes of brilliance in an 89-70 loss I might not be too disappointed. Clemson isn't a world-beater, so they shouldn't just run away with it, so if we're going to open the season with a conference game it's not a bad one to pick.

1.) It's a scrimmage. Young is playing with lineups to see what works
2.) It's a rebuilding year. We're not going to be fighting for the sweet 16 this year. What we hope to see is improvement from game to game
3.) The Dolphins were 3-1 in the preseason.

"Everyone is talking about this program. Something's not right. This isn't what you sign up for getting Justin Fuente Mike Young from Memphis Wofford."

I'll never forget the buzz and excitement around the city of Richmond in 2011 when VCU and Richmond made that tournament run. I was outside of Home Team Grill when VCU beat Kansas and just remember people going crazy in the streets.

Yup, people need to be patent this year. There are going to be lots of losses. They'll be better for it in the long run.

The dream team also lost a scrimmage to a bunch of college players..so.......
2019 VT bball = 1992 Dream Team.
Got it.
Meh.
Come find me if we lose 89-70 to Clemson. Then I might actually be disappointed.
I'm not sure what kind of differential you will be looking for......but you might want to be prepared for disappointment

I guess I didn't need to prepare for disappointment then.
