In recruiting, it's not over til the fat lady...

Time to fire everyone and start over.
"want to open better opportunities for my life"
Yeesh that is not a good look for us...
Guess he didn't vibe with the new unnamed defensive coordinator.
Are we getting big dogged again?
I'm sure our new DC must have had told him to look elsewhere, he wouldn't fit his system, etc.
LOL. yep, I'm sure that was it. Or he was passed on the depth chart by another recruit of course.

You: pretend you don't know this is about grades. Also you: trying to reclaim your negative stance in light of recent wins with any bad news possible. Cool Story.
You can't be serious? Really? I don't have an agenda, despite what you think. I call it like it is. You can try to spin some positive bullshit on the 2020 class, but that's what it will be at this point. Go ahead- that is just you trying to reclaim your program mouthpiece stance in the face of reality. cool story.
I didn't make any spin on the class with my comment. I'm just pointing out your blatant willingness to ignore info and spin things to look negative in this particular instance (ie Sings decommit). I actually think you've been pretty rationale with most of your other stances on here lately, but this is b.s. Also, might I remind everyone again that this class isn't final yet and neither is the season and neither are the results of any recruits we're bringing in. Maybe it all goes up in flames, maybe it doesn't. Irrational would be proclaiming everything is ruined when that's yet to play out.
What info am I ignoring by responding to the ridiculous claim that the not yet hired new DC said he wasnt a fit here?
Maybe I'm just misreading your intent with the comment. I didn't downvote it either way, and will give you a leg all the same just in case that is what it is. I agree that the potential DC saying he wasn't a fit is a ridiculous claim, but don't get what you were trying to say with the points in response. If sarcasm, I'll gladly apologize to what would then be an egregious overreaction. The info I was referring to was that several said a reputable source proclaimed it was due to grades, so I was reacting to the fact that his decommitment could mean anything other than that in the big picture.
Did we greet his mom or no
Either way could be bad depending on the circumstances....
Galen Scott has entered the chat
can we please stop perpetuating this

Torrian confirmed as the new DC?
In the words of Spalding Smails....RATFARTS!
Always a leg for a Caddyshack reference
Looks like tweet got deleted.
I'm guessing someone told him how poorly that "better opportunities" statement came across and advised him not to burn any bridges...
Was about to say same. Making sure it wasn't just me.
Yeah I saw that too; did he just decommit from his decommitment? Is this a situation where a double negative equals a positive and he's still committed?
Shame. He seemed like a really good edge rusher.
An Auburn flair on Reddit mentioned that they were worried about him qualifying around the time he committed. His tweet didn't sound like that was the case for decommitting though so idk. I guess we will know for sure whether he ends up somewhere bigger or at JUCO come early next year.
You never know with those things. Last year Elijah Blades flipped from Oregon to A&M and all the Oregon flairs were saying he wouldn't qualify for sure, and he's been playing for A&M this Fall so for one reason or another they were all wrong.
What is a flair?
On reddit.com/r/CFB you can choose to have a team logo by your username. That is the flair. Your flair for TKP is GT SUCKS AT PASSING.
Thank you. And yes, GT sucks at passing. !
The CFB Reddit is probably the best/most unbiased online college football community out there. It's worth checking out.
I agree it's the best place to discuss CFB as a whole, but I wouldn't say it's unbiased, and every sports sub gets progressively worse after it reaches at certain size. R/CFB is no exception to this rule. R/soccer is an example of a once great sub that has become unbearable at times the last few years and keeps getting worse.
True but I feel like the community moderates itself pretty well. Ultimately the people that are willing to poke fun at themselves usually rise to the top.
Can you tell me how? I've been trying to get one for the last couple of weeks
On Reddit or TKP? On TKP, join the TKPC. On Reddit, you join the subreddit and then click the 3-dot menu in the top right (on mobile) and select "change user flair"
Ok, so you are saying I need to have 15 pieces of flair?
Leg for referencing one of the best movies ever

Thank ya!
if that is the case and that's a big if and I'm not going to speculate whether it is or not, if I'm a kid I'm not really coming out and saying "i don't qualify and will be looking for a school that i do" so how he announces his decommit or what he says in his decommit post likely wouldn't reference not being able to qualify as the reason or even hint to it for several reasons.
Yeah, I tried to be cautious about even speculating, but I felt it was worth adding if I provided the context in which I heard it instead of trying to pretend like I had inside info. That said, it seems to have been confirmed down below.
I also agree that he's obviously not going to come out and state that he wouldn't qualify. I was moreso referencing that in his original tweet he referred to bigger/better opportunities (tweet has since been deleted.)
I think Fu is a good coach at his core. But his inability to effectively recruit or assemble a staff that can recruit at a competitive P5 level is worrisome. It's starting to be a glaring issue and weight on the program. The results we are currently seeing are just completely unacceptable, and it's hard to envision him getting markedly better at this even with a total staff overhaul. I worry we are never going to have the talent or be able to put it all together at this point to be a true national competitor again.
In this case, I don't know that its Fu....but Wiles.
Really worrries me about the possibility of Wiles becoming D.C. The DL Recruiting has been just plain bad, there really is no other term for it.
Foster and Wiles were a package deal, I'm not sure Fuente necessarily deserves blame for the assembly of that part of the Staff (the other option was to not retain Foster). I'm more focused on what Fuente does going forward, but some new blood with better recruiting chops is a definite IMHO.
We are in a terrible predicament right now. We had an eventual succession plan for Bud, but Scott messed that up. Now we have to go and find a new DC which is problematic considering Fuente himself is on shaky ground and likely facing a major staff overhaul this offseason in order to buy himself more time. No heir apparent at DC is killing us right now. If we make an underwhelming hire here, we may just seal the fate of the program.
Norell Pollard would like to have a word with you...
Seven games of one true freshman looking really good doesn't negate the overall trend at both the DT and DE position groups over the last few years. If the recruiting was better, Pollard and Kendricks wouldn't even be playing this year
Blame???? this board would have burnt down had Foster and Wiles not been retained- and now that's a negative thing? Wow
Fuente also wouldn't have a job if he didn't retain him. That 2017 team doesn't make a bowl without that Bud Foster defense.
Where did you find the template for this?
This narrative about Fuente and staff not being able to recruit is such total BS. The 17 18 and 19 classes were top 24 - 25 based on the average player ranking per 247. I don't know how people can keep touting this narrative of him as not being able to recruit when he's recruiting equally as well as Beamer did.
That's just the point. He's recruited thus far about where VT was during Beamer's last years. I think a lot of us expected recruiting to improve. I think overall roster management is also a valid concern. But regardless, where we are ranked now is totally unacceptable and is the worst recruiting class by far for VT in the Rivals rankings era.
Rankings Per 247:
2004- 34
2005- 20
2006- 31
2007- 26
2008- 18 (ended up a train wreck class)
2009- 25
2010- 28
2011-, 35
2012- 21
2013- 21
2014- 28
2015- 29
It's not so simple to compare the last 5-8 years of recruiting to the mid 2000's. Recruiting accuracy, number of professionals in the business, satellite camps, HUDL, etc have all made recruiting much more accurate than it used to be. Not to mention, there's a good chance many of the guys we were landing back then that were "hidden gems" wouldn't be hidden gems in the age of satellite camps and substantially more exposure.
I would say we've been recruiting roughly the same, but quoting class rankings is a fools errand. Especially when you pull them from 247, who retroactively applied a bunch of blanket grades to all those older recruits, because the composite and 247 weren't even around during the 2000's. It was started around 2010ish give or take a year or two.
I wonder if we will have this exact same discourse happen six thousand more times than it already has.
Sure- I agree its fools errand and the 2008, 18th rated class shows that... this is the best we have for a quick take on generally where the classes have been rated to make any attempt to compare Beamer's long term recruiting ratings vs. Fuente.
How did 2008 end up being a train wreck class? Over the course of their 5 years they won 2 ACC championships and had 4 out of 5 10 win seasons. I get 2012 was the beginning of the end of our golden years, but that would be more of a culmanation of all the recruiting classes. You had guys like Ryan Williams, Jarret Boykin, Bruce Taylor, Eddie Whitely, DJ Coles, Dyrell Roberts, Mike Via, Antoine Hopkins, and Goov, who all played key roles in the 2009-2011 seasons. Two of them were record breakers.
Half were total misses that never played or were kicked off the team. Train wreck probably too strong though.
Half of every recruiting class is total misses, but half of that class were major contributors to a great 4 year run. That ranking is also boosted by the fact we signed the #40 overall recruit in that class. Now if you wanna talk about some misses, there's now much i can say to defend the 2010, 2011, 2012 classes...
You were on a roll until you mentioned Goov. Probably one of our worst starting LBs in, at least, the past 20 years.
Did he help us win an ACC championship in 2010 or not?
Sure he had a pick-6, but that was one game, and we would've won without it. Point is he was definitely the weakest link on that D, often out of position, and isn't in the same league as the other players mentioned.
Bud Foster himself said after the 2010 season: "[Gouveia-Winslow] is a good, solid football player, but from an ability standpoint with Tweedy and Vandyke in there, is probably the third-best athlete out there."
I know people on here have their notions on Goov and i'm not gonna try to change them. I am not sure that game goes the same way without that pick-6 though. Also in that quote he just says he was the 3rd best athlete, not 3rd best football player. Bud obviously liked Goov as a football player or else he wouldn't have played him over Tweedy and Vandyke at times.
We can get into semantics on the quote but I read it as the others were more talented, but at the time I believe Tweedy was injured and Ronny was a freshman.
Certainly glad he had that pick-6. 2010 was a talented team. I don't know how many current starters would start on that team. 2010 also had the best VT jersey of all time, and that you can't change my mind over.
Grades. Mutual decision.
Also mentioned on 247 from TCB007 whose been pretty much in the know for years
I'm sure UNC has a solution for this problem.
Rumor has it that UNC actually presents you with a diploma when you get an offer from them. But don't worry they do the same for general students when they get their acceptance so it's fine in the eyes of the NCAA
Remember when we would end up having commits go to Hargrave or FUMA and prep for a year to get their grades in line? I feel like I have not seen that in a while. It used to be almost yearly that we would have at least one guy prep for a year. Is it just me or has this trend completely gone by the wayside?
I think Christian Darrisaw took this route
two way street- coaches and player both have to agree to it
Jahad Carter was a commit last year. Prepped this year.
2018: Darrisaw prepped at FUMA
2017: Dzansi prepped at FUMA, Terius Wheatley prepped at FUMA (I don't recall his being a grades thing)
2015: Yosuah Nijman at FUMA. Xavier Burke at FUMA. Tyrell Smith at Cushing Academy. Actually had three people sign letters of intent this year that didn't show up next year.
2014: Holland Fisher... FUMA.... DJ Reid FUMA.
I stand corrected.
I think the kid from Henrico last year is taking this route. Not sure if he still is going to be part of the 2020 class though. Haven't heard anything either way, so I'm assuming he's still coming to Tech.
Cracks me up when I see the initial reactions that we can't recruit, this is terrible look, etc. Then the actual reason of him not being able to qualify comes out and everything makes sense. There was a post over at TSL that said he may not even qualify for an SEC team....that's saying something.
Honestly, it sounds like he should never have gotten an offer if his grades were so bad.
New tweet up, a little different tone
Smart move using a VPN for this one too.
is he gassy? is there a meaning to the fuel pump emoji?
Was he scared off by the young depth on the d-line and convinced he wouldn't play for a while?
No, see above. It was grades which is not a surprise as this was the case when he originally committed to us. Best of luck to him.
It's a reference to all the comments handwaving away Noah Kim's decommitment.
LOL- always
I see it as another scholly available to try to flip someone.
Hopefully they can get Powell to reconsider
Simeon Barrow Jr. flip more likely.
Stephen is singing the song of someone else's people
Dammit. This is funny.
He was singing in the bathroom...this whole thing is a mis-understanding, we will re-committ to the good guys in December.
I know this isn't everyone's favorite thing to do, but like i've said from the start, i'm saving judgement on this class until the end of the signing period. Too much can happen. If things stay the same, then yea big concerns. If things pick up, then obviously some of this happened for a reason.
Who comes to an internet forum to reserve judgment?
Usually there's a brief period of time before and after the bowl game where new 'cruits come in, so it's not unheard of. But unfortunately, I don't think we've a class this poorly rated going into the fall/winter.
Yea but with such a small class, our ranking as done by 247 is only going to get so much better anyway. I've been looking at it based off the average recruit ranking, which is still lower than average for us. If we can improve that, I'll feel better but that is going to take a couple of surprises and some flips.
THIS- 100%... A class of two 5 star running backs only would be better than 12 2-3 star WRs and RB's. It's not about class "size". Our highest rated recruit is likely to be outside the top 750... not good, even if it was a 30 player class.
