Smart is going HAM right now against Memphis. 24 points (of Ok State's total 31) with over 8 minutes left in the 1st half. Glad we played him last year and not this year. Memphis as a team only has 20 points as a team right now.

Im not expecting us to have a winning record but I definitely like what JJ has brought so far. This team will be fun to watch in the future and hopefully this year

Western Carolina was 12-19 last year. 9-9 in the Southern Conference. They finished 245 in the RPI. Their best win came over #253 Wofford. They are one of the 7 teams we play that finished last year behind USC Upstate.
Temper your expectations. This team isn't worldbeaters, at least not yet.

I give JJ credit. He has to deal with the cards that were handed to him. We're know as a football school and he has a big hurdle to overcome trying to right the ship. I think he'll try and do what he can and see what happens. Good luck to him.

Good news is Barksdale is back for the next game and it's against VMI which runs the floor well. So it should be a fun, high scoring game. Thompson had a great game, but he is going to have a rude awakening when he realizes teams in the ACC have bigs just as tall, if not taller than him. He will improve in his time at VT, but he, along with much of this team will have some growing pains once the ACC slate hits.

The whole team is gonna struggle when they get to conference play, but I look at some of these freshmen that are getting serious minutes now, and I say, hey, these jokers are gonna be pretty good juniors and seniors one day.

VCU's MAJOR flaw is their free-throws. If I'm not mistaken, they're in the 320's in FT% (out of 330-something teams). Albeit, they've only played three games, so statistical significance is in question there. [Takes off O&M glasses] But other than that, VCU is the real deal. I really don't know if we have the horses to keep up with the high octane ball VCU plays.
Stat correction: Tied for 337th of 351 in FT% (after 2 logged games). VT is ranked 258th after 2 games for perspective.

I had tickets for this game but the wife wasn't able to go so watched it on ESPN3. I have always had trouble with ESPN3 and while I have pretty good video capabilities, etc, this is the suckiest way to watch anything. And, it had to be a very low-key skeleton crew. Allegretti was the commentator????? On at least 12 foul shot attempts, the camera was on the shooter's face and stayed there after he shot. Never knew until seconds later if he made the shot or not. They even did replays during live action. It was the most frustrating attempt at watching a VT event in my life. It's good they won and even though they totally sucked at foul shooting, it just added to the frustration. Won't go into how many times the video froze.

I just tried to watch MD/VT on ESPN3 and literally missed two whole drives because ESPN3 decided to show me the same commercial on repeat 6 times in a row

Remember back in 2003-04 when we had a bunch of freshman and a losing record? Remember how when that group of freshmen became seniors we went to the NCAA Tournament? I can see this group of freshmen doing that when they're seniors.

The loss to USC-Upstate may not have been as bad as originally thought. They just lost to Tennessee in Knoxville by 9 and led a good part of the game. UT is picked 3rd in the SEC behind Kenoneanddonetucky and Florida.

Thompson has a ton of potential, but he doesn't have a great offensive game yet. He's fun to watch because he can dunk, but unless he's dunking his offensive game isn't pretty. He's only a freshman so that'll hopefully change as he gets older, but for this year he's very limited.
Raines is our best player, I want to see him get the ball more and instead of just clearing out for him have some guys cutting to the basket. I feel like he's shooting with 2 guys on him every play.

I think the scoring this yr is more sustainable with more dribble drive/penetration than last year's dependance on threes and outside shooting. When we went cold it was over for us. 1st game we played this yr without true veteran leadership, I think this team is built to make some noise and will get better more experience. I have to say I'm impressed...and even more surprised.

2 Upsides:
1.) We beat WCU in both high profile sports!
2.) HOLY CRAP A WINNING RECORD.
We started last season undefeated the first seven games right?
yup, from 7-0 to 12-19. it was a magical ride.
That was a tough fall back to reality after riding the high of beating OK State (being at that game was a ton of fun) in Cassell.
Yeah that game was a lot of fun...and who can forget the "you're a pussy chant" and the end hahah it was great.
then we fell off a cliff
I thought we honestly might make Marcus Smart break down and cry in the middle of the game at the free throw line haha

And that was when we had a really good player running point for us. I'll take 2-1 with what we have now.

By surprise I meant they won't be one of the worst teams in ACC history like many thought they would.
So, pretty much like I told dad last night: we might be in contention for not-last-place in the ACC this year.
Was worried as it seemed our 21 point lead got cut down. Glad they pulled it off.

If we can only pull one huge upset this year... I hope it's against VCU.
I'd rather beat a big (ACC) conference team. I wouldn't mind another Duke upset repeat.
id also rather it be an upset in cassell
I hope it's against Michigan State or VCU. But in reality Michigan State is probably unstoppable this year so VCU is the more realistic scenario.
VCU looked pretty unstoppable when they were thrashing LOLUVA last week so I am not sure either of these are a realistic scenario
that was a tight game that came down to the last minute, i wouldnt say they looked unstoppable.

i'd rather beat uva.
I am really impressed with our freshman captain so far. Emelogu should be starting in the next week or so.
What is the deal on Rankin anyway? Is he just in JJ's doghouse? I don't remember seeing anything about an injury or suspension.
evidently he got mad he lost his starting job, and chose not to play in the first game. he might be in serious doghouse territory now.
It is personal reasons. He has gone through a lot and just isn't ready to play right now. Anyone saying anything different doesn't know the issue.

Eddie is lighting up VMI tonight.
