2013-2014 Aggie Hostesses (for reference)
So I had a very interesting conversation this week that I had to share here. A few days ago I met a former Clemson player and his daughter who is a current student at Clemson. After a lot of talk about football the daughter mentioned that she worked for the Clemson recruiting office as a "hostess" (If you're not aware what this is you can check out this old BR article which gives a very "university friendly" explanation). Now I didn't know much about the topic outside of some of the scandal involving hostesses that I had read about in the past so I asked her about her job. Here are just a few takeaways...
-She said that the bulk of the job is showing recruits around and spending time with them to answer any questions they may have during different functions.
-She said that they are encouraged to "mingle" with the recruits but that they have never been encouraged to do anything inappropriate.
-She mentioned that while some girls may act a little flirty at times that it's usually the recruits attempting to do most of the flirting.
-She said that while it's not explicitly articulated that that looks definitely go into the selection process. She laughed that she got the gig because of who her father was but she was also a stereotypically attractive young woman.
Now after we talked I decided to do a little bit more research on the topic and what I found was interesting. Specifically it was interesting because I really didn't find much. Ever since some of the scandals over the past decade or two schools don't really publicize much about the ladies anymore. I honestly couldn't find anything about the Clemson hostesses at all. If I had not spoken with the young lady I would have thought Clemson didn't have hostesses. The only thing I found is an old forum thread from a decade ago where I learned that they went from being called "Bengal Babes," to "Tiger Lilies," and eventually "Tiger Paws." It seems that Tommy Bowden had actually done away with the program during his tenure so if the message board banter is actually true I guess Dabo brought it back.
So with that said I leave you with a few questions for discussion...
1. What are your thoughts on this type of program? Are they good, are they bad, do they need more accountability, etc.*
2. How prevalent are these programs today? In ignorance I assume they are pretty prevalent but I know there are some folks out there that would certainly know more than me (ay where you at JUGS?).
3. Does anyone else have any insight/knowledge about these programs? I'm always interested in how the whole recruiting machine runs.
4. Does Tech have or have they ever had this type of program before. Admittedly I didn't search for this myself but I know somebody on here will know.
*Please don't let this devolve into uncivil discourse over the morality of these programs.

Comments
Tech absolutely has them. A friend of mine's wife used to be one at UVA once upon a time. It was just a job to her and she enjoyed working for the athletic department. Al Groh was at their wedding. She's intelligent and attractive so I imagine she was good at it.
You don't hear so much about this, but they've probably always been there. Maybe informally? There are always going to be some campus hosts/hostesses to show recruits around.
As long as it's on the up and up, it's not so much a problem.
You're edits have been a rollercoaster, lol.
I read some articles.
Old school hostessing is a bit different from the current iteration, as far as I can tell, so I modified my take.
I have a friend who did this at Tennessee. She basically said the exact same thing your Clemson friend did - You need to be attractive and outgoing, and for the most part, nothing scandalous happens. She also had other responsibilities, like taking promotional pictures with Gameday hosts, showing other important young people around campus, etc. I know that Tech did this in the Beamer days, I assume Fuente does it as well, since it's the norm in college football.
There were definitely women at Tennessee that were hostesses for the access to the players. If a woman was known to sleep around the team she was known as a Giblet, because the players lived in Gibbs hall. So if you were a hostess you could get away with not being called a Giblet if you didnt make thing obvious, like standing outside the dorm in fuck me boots waiting for any one to let you in.
It's no different than what any other business does at conventions/sporting events/restaurants/etc. You hire hot girls to flaunt your product in order to attract the simple, one track minded male over to their booth/product to spend money they don't have on a product they don't need.
If I was an 18 year old recruit and I was being toured around by one of those girls, you could've walked me through a swamp in the middle of an abandoned cemetery, I would've never known the difference, and I would've told my parents afterwards that campus was beautiful.
These girls are definitely told/encouraged to do nothing inappropriate, but they're young, it's college, and if they're told that "this recruit is a big deal..." they might feel the pressures of making sure said recruit "has a good experience on their visit". So I'm sure they're not immune/opposed to swaying a recruit's opinion if the right situation arises. I'd also bet that the people in charge aren't oppose to turning a blind eye if told about something inappropriate.
Sex has sold ever since humans lived in caves and were using tools made out of stone...
Everyone does this. I know several of the girls who did this while I was at Clemson.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it unless they are explicitly being "strongly encouraged" to actually hook up with the recruits, that would be messed up on many levels.
LOL... go to a house/apartment party in Blacksburg on a weekend and don't puke on a girl and you can get laid. Much less football recruit being shown around at the party by Dax Hollified. LOL.. VT doesn't need hostesses so long as kroger doesn't run out of Natty light and terrace view doesn't shut down. College dudes have to try to not get laid on the weekends in blacksburg.
This was my experience too. God bless college.
Congrats on the sex
Twas' a good time when these vids were coming out.
Huh?
I was generalizing, yes. but it's not hard. it's super not hard if you are being introduced as the next great VT football star.
I understand your point - I just wasn't sure why you wanted to make it.
I think in a round about way he was just pointing out that in a college town it's not hard to get laid, even more so for a recruit. Therefore, there's probably nothing crazy behind the scenes with hostesses.
There are two types of students out there, lol.
I can't help but ask, which question for discussion in the post did this word vomit about getting laid in college address?
That's what I was wondering too.
Maybe he's just saying that VT doesn't really need "hostesses" for recruits because they can just show up and get their "fix" which might help persuade them to attend school in Blacksburg. And if they encounter some hesitation, they can simply say "I'm a football recruit" and seal the deal.
Regardless... it's fun to reminisce about the conquests of college. Thank god for one certain high tech....

1) Is that really different from any other college with a major football program? 2) Not related to anything posted in the original post where the OP actually tried to generate a thoughtful discussion.

Yeah... That's really not what the main thread was about.
If only there were a way to collapse a thread you don't want to read...
Oh man...you must be new here lol
Wow, that is good to hear Mr. Studly. When I went to Tech as a freshman and being a towny and a commuter, I would hit some establishments in Blacksburg with my buds on weekends and usually, it was one booze hag drinking and 3 or 4 normal tech guys hanging around her at the bar. It was there I soon realized how disgusting this was and learned the magic words ..... "Radford University!!!!". Good times there are not forgotten.
Hope you passed all your tests.... and I don't mean your academic ones....
You mean for STDs? No sweat.
STD's? No problem I got a 1320.
Back when I was at VT in the late 70's, getting to, um, "know" a Radford girl was a prereq for graduation!
I still think it's considered an elective for most VT grads
..in fact, a portion of it is shut down which could be part of our 2020 recruiting issue /S

Knew a girl who did this at Texas during the time they won the BCS Title. She didn't get into many details about what went on, but at one point she just called up Vince Young and chatted for the hell of it.
Where the hell were the hostesses during my engineering official visit?
Having taken several non-athletic campus tours with my two boys when deciding on schools, and not really understanding the difference between a normal college tour and an official athletic tour, I can tell you the SEC tour guides were much more qualified than the ACC tour guides.
Here you go:

If I recall one of the big scandals was because a couple of the hostesses showed up at a recruits high school football game. I think it was Tennessee and the trip may or may not have been paid for by the school. I don't really see too much of an issue with it but in today's day and age I would not be surprised if this practice starts to get phased out by several schools.
Lol yea Kiffin had a girl that evidently was nicknamed "The Closer." It's never said that they did anything too scandalous but Kiffin slipping her $40 to grab another girl, make some signs, and come down to a high school game here in SC turned some heads.

I was always disappointed they couldn't find someone attractive to play that character [ducks]
Natalie Portman is all-time crush. She's my answer to the "You can have anyone in the world, who is it?" question.
She's a stunner.
She'll kill your fucking dog for fun, so don't push her.
Really like that movie. Great scene too.
She played that role as hostess to perfection.
Man I wish this was a service to all prospective students
I somewhat enjoyed the thrill of a chase....but then again, it was also very convenient when it just fell into your lap (literally)
If we weren't doing this I'd be disappointed. We ain't here to police who's kissing who. Though I'd imagine the NCAA would love to.
Clicked thinking this was a discussion about cakes and pastries. /S
Hot Takes:
Ho-Hos > Swiss Cake Rolls - it's not even close.
Sno Balls are still the shit, but I've noticed they lack the filling they once had when I was a child.
You monster. Ho-Hos are the UVA football of snack cakes.
Sorry...but sno balls are awful man....
If were talkin purely hostess snacks....fruit pies are where its at.
Gotta have the Ho-Hos with the Ding Dongs!

Came here to say that it has devolved into a discussion about Ho-hos and Ding Dongs, so he wasn't far off...
Don't forget about the Sno-Balls too
looks like scandal waiting to happen...schools need to thread very carefully.
It's been happening for decades. This is nothing new.
Sew, what should schools be doing about this, then?
I just want to know what the numbers on the Aggie Hostesses jerseys represent.
It's like the deli counter: "Now serving..."
Was this the girl from Clerks?
From the pic, I believe they are seated in tiers. Front row = blue chippers
Second row = 3*'s
Back row = 2*'s and walk-ons
agreed, they didn't even pretend to mix it up.
Yeah, nothing random about that pic.
Except back row, 2nd from right. She's a second row, at least.
Let's be honest here. Which of us wouldn't accept a NLI from any of these 'cruits?
Checks age...
You can tell Biden is our secret hostess recruiter by the bottle of Wild Turkey in his pocket.
(Full disclosure: Of course this is photo-shopped. Everyone knows Biden is more a Mad Dog 20/20 kind of guy.)
back row 3rd from the left is really just a younger version of:
It's all in the eyes.
ECUs first row is Texas A&Ms third row. So their third row doesn't make Texas A&Ms photo.
Just sayin.
I applied to get into the Hostess Program while I was at Tech. I got denied because I'm a little too hairy. And too male.
Sounds like you have a Title IX suit on your hands
I can confirm all of this, even DCs take, yes do we have hostesses and yes you can try not to get laid in Blacksburg at a house party and still end up laid.
I almost got laid delivering a pizza for crying out loud.
One of the big regrets of my life was walking out the door to make the next delivery, because the next one offered as well, and... let's just say it was sub-optimal.
Tech for sure has them. I know one personally. Pretty good perks. Sideline passes for the games and stuff like that.
I find it weird and certainly seems like it could get a school in trouble at some point.
