Everyone please pray for the health of Urban Meyer as he considers offers from FSU, USC, and the Dallas Cowboys at ~$10 million/year.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

There is zero chance that Urban is going to FSU. Taggart's buyout is $17 million and will be over $20 million total for him and his entire staff. They would have to pay Urban north of $10 million a year. One of the reasons Jimbo left was the FSU athletic department was too cheap or unable to spend additional money than what they were already spending. And now they are suddenly going to come up with tens of millions of dollars? Nope, not believing it for a minute.

Right. We make fun of F$U all the time but I don't think they can shake out the couches and find 30-35 million. After the 20 mil buyout, the most that they can afford for the next coach would be someone like Cornelson.....oh wait a minute.

looks like we missed their breakdown. Do you remember the gist of it?

Ah damn!! I read it yesterday so don't remember it exactly. Basically said since they had switched their AD to a private entity they may be able to circumvent the buyout somehow. I can't remember how.

Hey thanks! I love the mental gymnastics of avoiding contract requirements. It's like an escape room with a bailiff. I don't have enough legs to vote yet, but sudo leg for the reply!

FSU has pissed me off so much over the last few years. So much talent just absolutely wasted down there. Urban would make FSU piss me off 100X more because he would undoubtedly not waste that talent and turn them into the perennial power that they once were. All that to say...yeah, he ain't going to FSU.

Christ, $17M buyout for Taggart? Seems a little excessive for someone who had a losing record as a head coach prior to taking the job....

Added Mark Dantonio from Michigan State. I haven't seen any rumors, just unruly fans, but...
- 3 straight blowouts to Ohio State, Penn State, & Wisconsin (who isn't doing so hot either)
- Their 2020 recruiting class is currently ranked 11 out of 14 in the Big Ten. They're beating Rutgers, Illinois, and Indiana
- 2016 was a bad year (3-9), 2017 wasn't bad at 10-3, 2018 was 7-6, and so far they're 4-4.
- It's the Big Ten...

Damnit, you beat my edit by about 45 seconds. That's a helluva buyout for FSU to swallow.

They raised $20M in a private fundraiser that "wasn't for buying out Willie Taggart" even though his buyout is 85% of his remaining contract (~$18M) plus the $3M to Oregon and $1.3M to USF through Oregon. So they're "not paying" right around $20M... That's a lot of cheddar...

Why would you do that? There are maybe 5 coaches worth that. And then I'm not so sure.

The important part is that they changed their mind, thereby flushing the money down the toilet, and keeping their program in turmoil.

Also, lets the next coach know that they'll be under a microscope in the near and foreseeable future, as a bonus.

Right? I get serious schadenfreude watching a blue blood like FSU piss their status away with idiotic decisions like this.

A coordinator with head coaching experience would be alright by me.

I still would like to hand the reigns over to JHam, though. I think he's earned it, and Bud has been grooming him for it for a while.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

How has JHam earned the DC job? He has been a position coach for 1 year. I like the guy and I think he has a bright future, but I'm going to be worried if he gets the job with very little experience.

Yea I in no way want Jham as DC

He's been a position coach in P5 for a year. He was a defensive coordinator at uva-wise and was the linebackers coach for VMI. It's not like this was his first year coaching. Has he earned it? I think that's up for Fuente to decide as none of us are there when they break down film or are talking about what they see during games.

If we hired a DC with JHam's resume who wasn't a former player there would be a justified meltdown.

There's no reason that a decent coach couldn't turn UTSA into a G5 contender. I'll absolutely give you UTEP, though.

Historically there's been a huge difference between east texas and west texas. Most of the high school talent is in the east. UTSA could tap into that, but there's a reason why UTEP, Texas Tech, and the New Mexicos haven't been able to tap into that texas talent.

No major program could handle his recruiting.

It's one of the key reasons Bennett was never picked up by the Blue Bloods, they can't take losing recruiting season.

I don't see any obvious place for Bronco to go. He went to Oregon St who has a former QB doing solid work there. Bronco coached at BYU so he's not likely to take the Utah job is Whittingham leaves. UDub isn't opening. Maybe Stanford? Colorado?

Important
Now

It wasn't from JF's perspective. It wasn't saying he couldn't handle interactions. He was simply picking his kid up from practice, and people were making a huge deal out of it. Let the man pick up his kid how he wants to pick up his kid. They are off limits. And because h'es sitting in his car while practice is ending doesn't mean that everyone gets to jump to conclusions about his character or anything of the sort.

Not directed at you Nerf, but the topic in general....

Somebody getting their underpants in a knot about something like this is just absurd. He's one of the top 3 highest profile faces in the entire town. The last thing he wants or even needs after getting blasted by Duke is some armchair QB at his kid's practice telling him what he should or shouldn't have done. Let the man have a life outside of football and be a parent. I understand public interaction is part of the territory, but put yourself in his shoes of not even being able to pick your kid up from practice without being ridiculed about how you did it.

Says way more about the general public than it does about CJF. I'll be willing to bet he was using that alone/quiet time to decompress so he can put aside the stress of football and be a father to his children.

I get he may be feeling that the fan base isn't thrilled with the way his tenure has gone the past two years but does he really expect them to be more forgiving in the SEC West? Also it's not like Fuente has conquered the ACC so I don't see why he'd want to jump to a higher level.

Eh, not really. It's just that VT doesn't have someone like Jerry Jones willing to throw a bunch of money around to fix things. VT, program wise, could have all other factors going for it but at some point the zeros on the check will make most coaches look elsewhere.

To quote Ted Dibiase, "Everybody has a price!*laughs maniacally*"

The little that I have seen about it, says that he would be doing the move because it is closer to Oklahoma and he could go home whenever he wants.

Arkansas fans don't seem to think they will be able to pay enough to get him there. Like the jump in pay wouldn't be enough to get him there.

Could just be context confusion, but the article on FootballScoop says that the Ark. AD tweeted that he is flying around meeting with candidates, not the other way around... FWIW.

โ€œTHE CUP IS GOING NOWHERE MIKEY!!! THEY DID IT SOMEHOW!!โ€

This possibility just occurred to me: Is Fuente interviewing for the Arkansas job or is he interviewing people who just got fired from the Arkansas job. Same with Missouri

This makes no sense, Arkansas is a train wreck in the hardest division of CFB. Not sure even old Nicky could resurrect that program.

Or maybe it was a "program defining win" in the sense that they accomplished what their program set out to do?

Good for Shane if it happens. From everything I have heard, he is a pretty great guy. This could be a nice opportunity.

#Let's Go - Hokies

Twitterverse is saying Fuente interviewed with Mizzou and Arkansas. I'm in the belief that one of our assistants did, because, I don't want to believe these stories.

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

If the rumor that Fuente doesn't like it here because the fans are too tough...good luck at a little brother SEC school, my man.

LOL. the fans at VT have been more than generous to Fu and Co. Let Fu get worked by ODU at an SEC school and see what happens. Let him get crushed by Ole Miss at Mizzou as Ole Miss rushes for 9 yards a pop and see what the reaction is. Let him be the Florida coach that screws up the Kentucky streak. LOL. fu has one of the top 5 gigs in America in terms of fan support for a "big time" football school.

He could take a 7&6 team to 9+ wins in 3 of his 4 seasons...

I dont think this fanbase is as gracious as you think.

Fair. At some point (now hopefully) VT football needs to stop being compared to Beamer's last team. That is neither a proper measuring stick or excuse for why Fuente wins or loses. VT football needs to be evaluated in real time and moving forward- not compared to the 2015 Hokies. Hopefully we are at that point now.

We were stuck in a 7-6/8-5 rut for four years before Fuente took over. Fact of the matter is, of Fuente's 4 seasons so far, two are better, one is worse, and this year could either meet or exceed the high-water mark from the 4 years prior, so overall it's fair to say we've done better over the last four years than the four years prior.

That said, there needs to be signs of improvement. 3 years in, we didn't have many, with an apparent downward trend forming through 4 games this season, but now I think it's fair to say he has since bought back some good will from among the supporters of the program, and we'll have to see how the program trends into 2020 and beyond.

What is the measuring stick? Looking at the schedule next year I think 9+ could be in play because screw @pitt and PSU, @UofL could be tough. If Fuente wins a bowl game this year and goes 9-4 next season he will be 43-23 in his first 5 years which would match Beamers winning percentage at VT. But many would be upset with another 9-4 season. Beamer is the standard bearer for what VT can do so being as good as Beamer should be good enough. But for many it wont be.

Of we are 9-4 next year with 4 coastal losses playing in the military bowl, are you happy? Is that the standard moving forward? Not all "9-4" are created equal. If the 4 losses are UVA, Pitt, UNC, GT nobody on this board will be happy- regardless Fuente's overall win%. I personally don't define VT football expectations as "Frank Beamer's last 4 years" which seems to be the standard by which Fu is judged.

Agree here 100%. If we aren't seriously competing for ACC titles and NY6 bowls, we are falling short of expectations for where this program should be and what we should be able to accomplish. 9-4 and not winning the division or being blown out by Clemson and playing in a lower bowl is not the goal and was clearly not the main goal when this staff was hired. To say it was is completely disingenuous and moving the goalposts to justify lesser results.

I think it's insane to compare this staff to Beamer. In today's college football environment, you don't get six years to get things going. It seems like some think as long as the win percentage is decent, we should ride things out indefinitely and hope we catch lightning in a bottle eventually. It is highly unlikely for that to occur in today's game. You must make moves to keep up with your competition or you are resigned to failure.

No question we should have expectations of winning ACC championships and getting into the playoffs every once in a while. If by keeping up with the competition though you mean changing coaches every 3 or 4 years like many other programs, I'm not sure that's really a great strategy. There is a long list of teams with more talent that have been doing that for a while and still remain mired in mediocrity. As painful as it is, being patient is not a bad strategy. Especially when you are consistently hitting the 8 to 10 win mark.

I dunno, that would mean we would have beaten PSU and Miami so...

The PSU win would be worthless if we can't win the Coastal. Just like another Big Ten non conference win a few years ago.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

You mean the win that we all remember today and will always remember? PSU will never be of that level.

My 2019 Season Challenge: only comment with Star Wars memes. (completed as of Nov. 29)

a PSU win would be huge, agreed. Miami sucks- their program is trash right now. We should have beaten them 4 or 5 straight years now if we weren't also stumbling. Miami is 100% meh... ;look past the nostalgic U on the helmet.

I view Miami as a rival on the same level as UVA. I know other people enjoy it when VT beats Miami as much as I do, so I threw that out there. Losing to UVA again would suck, but so would losing to Miami. Beating PSU and Miami would make going 4-4 in the ACC more palatable.

As a thought exercise I'd be disappointed with anything less than a 10-2 regular season next year based on our returning starters and returning production. We should have the experience to pick up a couple more wins, especially since we had a couple of close losses this year. But you have to figure at least one conference loss because #GoACC and figure we lose to PSU because #BlueChipRatio.

Oh, and if we have an 8-4 (4-4) regular season we're not falling to the Military Bowl.

Except that the ACC is changing up the bowl process next year and getting rid of tiers, and will be making the games more geography based.

That's not Frank's last 4 years, that's Frank's 26 years (or how ever many he was here)

Fine let's change that to a 10-4 with a loss in the ACC title game. 10 wins!!!! Now all double digit win seasons are the same. Because look at 2011 it was a terrible season we got beat down by the only real teams we played. 2009 we beat ranked Miami and Nebraska, and were rewarded with a 7-5 opponent in the bowl game. 2008 we lost to ECU but did beat GT who ended the season ranked. But we coasted through a bad ACC schedule and everyone was happy with 10 wins. So 1 win is really the difference?

Bama fans are going to keep saying how many 10 wins seasons they've had. This season they could be a team with 8 wins or more.

We keep telling everyone how great Foster is (he is great) but VT is 3rd in some stat while he was a coach. Then holy shit who has been able to change staffs and be better in the last 25 years? Cause that is impressive. Look at OUs defense right now, they arent good, but they have had some great defense but the last couple of hires haven't been very good. And they have the money to hire the best people. It's really had to keep programs going through coaching changes. Very few have done it well.

At the end of the day if Fuente goes 9-4 for the next 5 years we are going to say that VT had 9+ wins in 8 out of Fuentes 9 seasons. That we have the longest bowl streak ever (even with a losing season which wasnt possible when I started college). It's all about the bragging, the pettiness. So sure all 9-4 seasons are the same.

But yes people on this board are going to be upset at every loss no matter what. People are going to be upset at every season that doesnt end with a conference title and a playoff birth. Fuente will win the national title and the next season lose to Duke and people will want him fired. I think fans are delusional by default. At the military bowl last year some lady kept yelling at the refs when they called a blantant penalty against us. Is she not watching the same game as me?

mind linking or embedding? everything i'm seeing on twitter linking CJF to Mizzou is from 2015 when we hired him, or as part of a larger "no real legs on these but what if" lists of "candidates" (like our current DC replacement thread).

I'm blocked on Twitter at work, but the Mizzou stuff seems more like speculation. @footballscoop is my go to this time of year, but they only had an update over a week ago about Mike Leach to Arky. Thought some of the tweets this morning about Arky were more speculation, until I saw the post above.

I hope he stays, or doesn't get an offer. Next year is bound to be spectacular with so many returning starters.

Also in the report:

The good news is all of this seems like speculation.

Hypothetical situation: if Fuente does get an offer for the Arkansas job and comes back to Whit saying he's interested, what can you do for me, what do we do? IMO, if he thinks VT fans were harsh to him, good luck in the SEC at a second-tier job. I would say thanks and walk away honestly.

Depends on his asks. If he comes back and says 'I want an extra $1M to hire the best defensive staff and more support staff for recruiting,' that's a lot different than saying 'I want an extra $1M for my annual salary.'

The other side of it is, as much as we hate it, the market drives a coach's value, not how we value him. If Ark and Mizzou both offer him more than we can, it becomes a question of what can we do to upgrade for a price we can afford.

Twitter me

If he tries to coerce Whit to give him another extension/raise, I certainly hope Whit has the fortitude to tell him to take his current contract or leave it.

Or you rework it to make his buyout larger and reduce VTs buyout

Or you politely ask him to leave your office because you just gave him a 7 year extension with a huge bump in pay, and after this season where we under performed he's asking for yet another bump? Is this going to be a yearly occurrence? Will he go 6-6 and ask for more money? Nope. Don't get to play with the contract EVERY year, especially in the first of a seven year deal.

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

To be fair, most reasonable preseason projections put us at either 8-4 or 9-3. We started way worse than expected, but still finished pretty much right on the money, so it's hard to say that we underperformed this season overall.

Prob should have put that in air quotes for TKP crowd....
He definitely didn't finish top 5 and earn yet another raise on top of the extension last year.

To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

You are 100% correct that he certainly did not earn an extension this year. If anything, he merely ended his occupancy of the hot seat.

Hypothetical situation: if Fuente does get an offer for the Arkansas job and comes back to Whit saying he's interested, what can you do for me, what do we do?

Wish him well and thank our lucky stars we don't have to cough up the buyout. That was a terrible deal. No love lost here if that happens.

The entirety of the CJF link is "There has also been some chatter about Virginia Tech's Justin Fuente with the intriguing pairing of Fuente once again joining forces with former Missouri head coach Barry Odom as his defensive coordinator. The two previously worked together to build up the Memphis program. Hog fans would likely rally behind this pair as well."

doesn't even claim any sources, so just seems to be a report about speculation

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Thanks for the embed.

Footballscoop only reports when they have something substantive. So, an agent has talked to them, or someone inside Ark athletic department has indicated he's on the list. The Barry Odom part makes me think an agent between Odom or Fuente has intimated to FootballScoop that they would pair back up in Fayetteville.

Sad to say, but the ACC can't afford to lose Dabo until someone else steps up to become a regular in the top 15. We were close for so long, but the perspective of the ACC when we were on top still wasn't all that great because we were only top 15 about half the time, even if it was fairly competitive near the top and through the middle. Now, we have one elite team, and a whole bunch of others fighting for scraps. If the single elite team falls without another prepared to take their place, we're left fighting with the AAC for 5th place and in serious danger of losing our status as a power conference come renewal/update of the CFP in a few years.

Could be wrong but I don't see Dabo as an NFL guy.

Bennett has shown that UVA is a pretty stable situation with enough money to stay.

His recruiting isn't good but he keeps taking those bad recruits and creating good players. His evaluation and development skills are damn near excellent.

Bennett recruits plenty of top tier talent to go along with 3-stars that fit his system. His championship team featured 5-6 top 100 recruits (Guy, Jerome, Hunter, Diakite, Key, Huff) . (our sweet 16 roster last year included 4 top 100 recruits)

This so much. It boggles my mind that you only give a coach 2 yrs or less. If there isn't instant success then it's next man up.

And McElroy hits the nail on the head. This is why I don't know why Fuente to Arkansas had any legs at all just because an Ark site said they were interested in him. That place is a dumpster fire in the the toughest division in CFB. The fact that they thought they could be competing for the SEC West in a short amount of time is insane.

Did people here actually think that Fu would do exactly what McElroy said? "Leave a solid established situation for murky situation with minimal job security".

True, I guess to me it just came off like "it's year two and we aren't competing for SEC Championships where we should be" and maybe I read too much into it.

If Lincoln Reilly is hired by Dallas, what are the odds Oklahoma hires Fuente to replace him? The option to return home would be too good to pass up, IMO.

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Oklahoma would have to get turned down by a lot of people to get to that point.

I would think pretty high. It's probably the one job that he would definitely have interest in if it was open, just like Myer with Notre Dame.

Justin Fuente is not getting the Oklahoma job. Not now. If he wins big some more at VT, maybe.

Huh?

It was a joke. Look up what the movie Dark Water is about and you'll understand.

He's right though. The OU fanbase would have an absolute meltdown if Fuente is the best they could get to replace Lincoln Riley this offseason.

Totally correct. OK would be looking to poach either HC or well-regarded Coordinator from another perennial Playoff Contender, anything less would not play well there. Venables would probably be someone they would look at.

Fuente has done some good things at VT but there are still some question marks--he was
legitimately on the hot seat (at least from.the fanbase) this year before turning things around.

I'm sure Oklahoma has either of these covered before they even begin to look outside:

a) A large counter-offer/extension ready to offer
or
b) An internal or Stoops/Reilly candidate in mind (why change from your current system if you don't have to)
or
c) Both a and b

OU is a program that would have its sights set a lot higher than a coach whose high water mark is a single win of the worst division in the Power 5 and has yet to have any real statement wins on the national scene.

Norvell to FSU and Joey Freshwater to Ole Miss. is Odom still available or will Memphis snatch him up.

Yes

Will be interesting. I would expect them to go offense, but wouldn't be surprised if they hired him based on his past experience there.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who says that Memphis plans to promote from within and that we are in good shape with Odom.

Sounds pretty serious.

You're the only ones that I can talk to about this, you guys.

Love this. Hope he can pull an upset or two every year there

Just announced that Mike Norvell is heading to FSU. Let the dominos begin to fall...

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Simply amazing. Everyone has something they are not proud of in their past.

What's not to be proud of? It's glorious

So who made the better Memphis HC hire. Us or FSU?

Fuente built it, Norvell inherited it?

That's kind of how I feel but self admittedly I dont follow Memphis a ton

Fu with Odom was the best. Fu with Scott is better than early Norvell but probably worse than Norvell with Adam Fuller (their DC this year)

Well hopefully FU+ ODOM reunite in the NRV

Time will tell. With that said, if I'm an up and coming coach and I have Arkansas and Memphis both chasing me......I'm probably leaning Memphis after the last five years. Money won't be near as good, but it's a proven pathway to great payday that's not going to play auburn, Alabama, a&m, and LSU every year.

Lots of smoke on Twitter and 247 now that Odom is likely heading to Memphis. Wonder who we target now if this is the case? I have to think we had an A candidate before Odom was fired from Missouri last week.

Drinkwitz (app state) to Missouri

Lots of talk on upstate SC radio this morning about Jeff Scott taking the USF job. If true, let's hope he poaches some of clemson's staff.

OP - can we put this into a table? Just three columns - School, Old Coach, New Coach. Would be much easier to follow. I can try to do this later today if I have time.

EDIT: I found time. If the 'New Coach' is black that means that the position has not yet been filled. All coaches are/were HC's, unless otherwise noted:

School Old Coach New Coach
Rutgers Chris Ashe Greg Schiano
FSU Willie Taggart Mike Norvell
Missouri Barry Odom Eli Drinkwitz
Arkansas Chad Morris Sam Pittman (UGA OL Coach)
Ole Miss Matt Luke Lane Kiffin
FAU Lane Kiffin Willie Taggart
Memphis Mike Norvell
UTSA Frank Wilson Jeff Traylor (Arkansas RB Coach)
USF Charlie Strong Jeff Scott (Clemson OC)
Boston College Steve Addazio
Colorado State Mike Bobo Steve Addazio
App State Eliah Drinkwitz Shawn Clark (App State OL Coach)
UW Chris Peterson Jimmy Lake
Fresno State Jeff Tedford
ODU Bobby Wilder Ricky Rahne (PSU OC)
UNLV Tony Sanchez Marcus Arroyo (Oregon OC)

LSU D Coordinator to Coach at UNLV seems like a massive demotion in my mind.

He needs to hold out for a P5 team.
