Could only watch bits and pieces of the game...great to see Nolley go off.
The real question I have is what's going on with Jalen Cone? Is Cattoor a much better prospect than anticipated, Cone worse? Is Cone hurt? Or is it because Cone should be a high school senior right now he's just not there physically yet?

I had the same questions. From what I saw Cone looked very uncomfortable when on the floor. I chalked it up to being so young. I figure he will progress as the season goes along.

I agree here, he is young and hopefully he understands he is a project. He's not going up against HS Varsity players anymore. I think he realized that last night when he was up against Hunter and Dawes giving up 5-6 inches on their PG's let alone Clemson's FWD's inside. He averaged 25 in HS, but if you then go look at his stats on the AAU circuit it drops to 5ppg. Small sample size of games, but its a sign that he needs to develop. Our/his hope would be a Carsen Edwards type where he can shoot lights out from behind the arc and then use his speed to beat the defender coming out on him.

although there is a lot of talk from the program on how well Cattoor can shoot the ball, I think last night was a combination of first game "don't look at me" and the fact that others, namely Nolley were proving so effective. Cattoor stayed on the floor for much the same reason Bede used to get into games late last season. DEFENSE. Outside of a couple drives by the Clemson Hunter, Cattoor kept his guy off the board for most of the night. Kind of makes me think we are seeing another Devin Wilson type player but with a better shot if all reports are correct.

Defense is going to get you minutes on the 2019 CMYBall squad. These guys aren't going to be going on rocket power scoring runs. The key to winning is going to be keeping the other team from doing that.

It certainly wasn't just you. Cattoor often looked a step slow on both sides of the ball, but he did have some solid rebounds to go along with some not great turnovers. Maybe the first game being a conference game in a packed house had the younger guys nerves cooking so hopefully we see solid and continual improvement in our noncon games. Cattoor did have some open looks behind the arc and didn't get them to drop, so if he hits a couple of those and has a very solid debut night.

It's hard for a freshman to be able to run an offense at the college level, let alone a should-be high school senior. His time will come, but we'll have to ease him in. Also, Bede and Cone are our only 2 primary ball handlers, so they most likely aren't going to start together because we'd be screwed when they both are on the bench. I think Cone's minutes will increase as the season progresses, but him and Bede probably won't overlap too much.

Ha I love on the Bede block the Clemson guy stands up off the bench and raises a hand in anticipation of the shot sinking. Then Bede blocks it and he's like 'oh'

I kept saying the same thing and that it was kind of "jerky." My wife thinks I'm an idiot. She pretty much always thinks that, though, so I'm glad someone else noticed it.

My father-in-law mistakingly called him "wasabi" last year. We have always joked about that. When the announcer said something close to that I cackled.

Love this guy already! I'm paraphrasing: "...no credit goes to me for this win, I have good players..." It is surely a refreshing interview, versus the Buzz interviews, where he goes off on tangents. That's not shade, I loved those interviews too, it's just nice to have something new during the game, and post game.

Word on the street is that they are excited and love VT, but they know its gonna be some rough sailing at first. They are hopeful that the fans understand it and are supportive.
But give it some time and it could be special.
Coach Young does the work...he sounds like he know as much about the clemson players' game as the Hokies.
Congrats on the win, Coach!

I wonder how much it helped being in familiar territory with a familiar set of local reporters from his time at Wofford to help him ease into his first postgame presser. Seemed like he was friendly with most of them, which was interesting.

Just got to watch this. How can a player not want to play for this guy? If the early indicators are indicative of his time here, I'm looking forward to the next 20yrs of VT bball.

well, considering that posting a picture on leSabre is a twelve step process that requires a passing knowledge of late 90s ftp uploading shortcut keys, I don't see us being nearly as successful doing that.

I think everytime we beat a acc team would should get a picture on who we thought was the best player for the game and spam their final score tweet with a picture of that player😂

Inspired by one of the replies in the thread, I give you. . . The Nolley Problem.
You and the Virginia Tech basketball team are riding Landers Nolley through the season. We just saw the type of individual effort and how he can take over a game - he's unstoppable. If kept on his normal course, he will single handedly win VT five random games. (Could be coppin St or GT or whoever but not UVA) or you can pull a lever on the Nolley and guarantee he'll take over both UVA games and get us the sweep against the Hoo's. If you pick the 5 we lose against UVA and if you pick UVA we lose the other five.
Which do you choose?

It was really a tribute to the guy who mirrored it. I don't know why but scrolling through all of the Nolleys and the very subtle preview of the mirrored image (34 seconds in this clip) made me laugh so I figured upside down would be the next logical step.

Good start to the Mike Young era. I think the big question moving forward is: who will step up to be our secondary scoring options?
Nolley was options 1, 2, and 3 last night. He made 12 field goals. Next highest? PJ Horne with 3 field goals. When Nolley has an off game, it could get ugly. Wilkins had an off game, but hopefully he can be a reliable scorer throughout the season. Also Bede might have to step up his aggression an offense.
I was very interested to see the trio of Cattoor, Alleyene, and Radford because I think we all knew very little about them and they all play basically the same positions and roles. I suspect 1 of those 3 will take a big step up throughout the season to be a reliable starter or 6th man.
All and all, I'm very happy with how last night went. It's going to be a season of ups and downs - hopefully with more ups than the experts project.

The most productive of the three was Alleyne, both on ball and away movement wise. He hit two big three pointers but also drove the lane and drew several big fouls, going 5 of 6 from the free throw line. He was the only other player that seemed to know his offensive identity so if he can clean up his shooting a bit, you are likely looking at a double digit scorer every game. Away from the ball he was constantly giving himself the ability to receive the pass with space to shoot or a step to create a lane to the basket which will be huge during conference play.

I was impressed with Alleyene, especially since there was talk of redshirting this year. He was composed and clutch at the FT line, in contrast to the Clemson freshman who was awarded 3 FTs when he air balled a three point attempt and missed all three. Looking forward to seeing him develop.

So ESPN dropped a case of the SADS on me last night. Was watching Sportscenter late last night and as it ended the ESPN show GymRats came on with a full episode following around the Florida Gators basketball team and of course the major player they focused on was Blackshear. I don't begrudge him his choice to go but its painful to see how great a shape he is in and how focused on improving he is down there. I don't doubt that he will likely be the SEC player of the year barring an injury. Just really would be great to have that senior leadership helping these young Hokies develop this season.

I watched the same thing and its been all I can think about since then. At the same time I'm gonna be a huge Florida fan this year and I'll be so happy if he wins a national championship.

You see him go up for that rebound? Wish I could jump like that.
Was it just me or was cattoor ineffective relative to the amount of minutes he plaid? Seemed like he was just "there".
According to ESPN stats he played 27 minutes with 0 points and 4 rebounds. Yea, I think he was just "there" lol
Cattoor was so fast last night that he went plaid, and we didn't even realize it... (hopefully this witty response will go plaid)

might surprise you (like it did me) that he was credited with just one turnover

My favorite part of the Bede block gif is seeing the Clemson bench about to get hype, then have to sit the fuck down.
edit:

bench guy puts the tre up then tries to hide it in his armpit
Well, actually!

Captured another angle.
I can't stop watching that one dude on the bench!
Smelly armpit reaction
Sure!
Not Sure...
Bede looks like the shortest guy on the court on tv, but was the tallest guy on that block
The NBA was having a moment watching that game last night, Nolley pls
Great start for coach Young.. ACC road win- never easy. 9 more acc wins and we are dancing!! - that's Syracuse..but you get the idea!
Nolley looks like a young KD with his shot/length on the basketball court my goodness
I feel like I've heard that before...

One critique of the game: The camera was zoomed out too much
I kept saying the same thing and that it was kind of "jerky." My wife thinks I'm an idiot. She pretty much always thinks that, though, so I'm glad someone else noticed it.
I think at one point the announcer said your username while trying to pronounce Bede's name. The whole broadcast was awful.
My father-in-law mistakingly called him "wasabi" last year. We have always joked about that. When the announcer said something close to that I cackled.
Depending on how he plays this season, I think we could make Wasabi stick.
And the audio was glitchy too - at least with my feed.
Amateur hour - my how ESPN has fallen.
Could we get Horne's missed dunk just for comedic purposes?

Young man keeps hammering this much iron, he should have a good career as a blacksmith.

I've scrolled through this thread at least 10 times since last night and still can't make it through without laughing.
Wow, our fans trolling much. Would only be better if it had been UVA and over on La Sabre.
well, considering that posting a picture on leSabre is a twelve step process that requires a passing knowledge of late 90s ftp uploading shortcut keys, I don't see us being nearly as successful doing that.

If for no other reason, those are conference games. :)
My favorite is the ones that say "this image contains potentially sensitive material" and when you click view it's another picture of Nolley
