We got a better deal when bought ours lol.

I had to get a new TV about a month ago, and I was surprised that the costs of TVs were more expensive when I went to Target on Saturday. It got me thinking Black Friday is a scam.

yes BUT it's still a good deal

Just got ourselves a TV around the same time and have been thinking the same thing.

This whole Black Friday/Cyber Monday is largely a case where stores mark up to mark down. And Cyber Monday, especially on Amazon, is largely filled with crap.

In the past, I'd agree with you. For whatever reason this year, I'm finding little odds and ends I've had on my wish lists for months on deep discounts today. I think my favorite might be the infrared thermometer I got for half off, or the thermacell mosquito repeller. Got a few outdoor summery items I can't use right away but the deals were really good.

Exactly, we've been hunting for a number of smaller things and found some pretty deep discounts on most of it. I feel like Black Friday is no longer anywhere near as good for the big-ticket items like it once was, as the stores have probably realized that the loss they take on them isn't worth the increased revenue since everything in retail operates at such a low margin these days, but at the same time I think they use Black Friday to dump a lot of their inventory of smaller items that are otherwise just taking up warehouse space.

TV deals are generally way better around the Super Bowl and in early spring when model cycles refresh. The only great deal I saw on a TV this Black Friday was the Vizio P Quantum X 75" at Costco for $1700. The rest were average TVs at best. I have my eye on a Samsung Q80 but the high end TV deals sucked this year outside of the Vizio deal.

I did see some pretty good deals last week on 50" 4K Smart Alexa TVs. Amazon had a Samsung for 330, Toshiba for 250 and a TCL for 270.

Those TVs are generally... not good. They're good for folks that just need a TV and don't care much for picture quality.

Agree in general. however picture quality is much more dependent on the source than the TV itself. Watch a 4k blue ray disc and standard comcast signal on the same TV for example.

Yes, my family looks at me like I'm crazy when I prefer physical media over streaming. I only have a Samsung KS8000 (hence eyeballing a Q80) but it's a noticeable upgrade in PQ when not streaming.

4K disks are great. I also didn't realize that if a movie had any special IMAX scenes as part of its release, those IMAX scenes are full screen on 4k. Interstellar and Dunkirk are absolutely stunning in that medium.

We also got a Chromecast Ultra that streams in 4k and when paired with the upgraded 300-400mpbs internet that we are getting from Spectrum, its pretty amazing as well.

Regular cable is absolute crap, however.

I agree they aren't the best TVs but if you're looking for an upgrade to 4K, it isn't terrible. I could be wrong but I don't think 4K LED picture quality can change that dramatically between TVs. As DCWilson stated, it's more dependent on the source.

It's a complicated equation but from a quality 4K Blu-Ray player with HDR you'll notice a substantial increase in picture quality from those cheap Black Friday TVs to a quality full array TV with HDR10+/Dolby Vision.

and this is where the complication starts to come in. I've been patiently waiting for the right time to strike on the new TV while I have systematically upgraded everything else around it - receiver, speakers, blu-ray, and streaming device. Everything I have is Vision and Atmos compatible, and finding the right TV with the right tech and right features at the right price is the problem. I have looked seriously at the Samsung lineup but their proprietary HDR format (QLED) isn't compatible w Vision and has some forward compatibility concerns. The TV I'm closest to pulling the trigger on is the LG nano cell lineup but even then there are 3 difference lineups.

these kinds of issues are why i just can't bring myself to "care" about tech as much as i care about the content

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

The LG non-OLED Tech is awfully shitty. Since you're all in on DV then your best bet is a Sony x950g or LG OLED. I would stay away from the nano-cell. Maybe give a look at the Vizio P Quantum X as well. What size are you looking at?

We just bought a nano-cell, and have absolutely zero complaints.

That's great, honestly. But OP is looking to get a TV that's DV compatible. While the nanocells are DV compatible, they don't have the peak HDR brightness to bring the most out of his set up.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I had to play with the settings to turn on the adaptive brightness (basically I had to disable all the eco-friendly presets) but its been stellar since we bought. Its pretty much the best you're going to buy without going all the way up to the pricier OLED tier, but also doesn't necessarily have the burn-in drawbacks that the OLED screens tend to develop.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

That's the crux of the QLED vs. OLED debate. But yes, the nano-cell and Samsung 8000 lines are the best mid range TVs. Also in that price range are the TCL 6 Series TVs which are very good TVs as well.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

The burn-in issues is what drove me away from an OLED. With the amount of sports broadcasts I watch with their static score widgets and the networks with their static logo in the corner, that would be setting me up for a really bad time in the not too distant future. Bought a 65" LG nano-cell instead and its been amazing.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Agreed. I would love an OLED but I play too many video games and watch too much sports. If I had a dedicated home theater (soon) then yeah but I'd also look hard at a projector there. We're looking for a 75" Q80 because of our living room, mainly because I want the local dimming it offers but the viewing angle and reflection coating get fantastic reviews.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

We got the LG 9-series. Its been really good for us, and I would suggest giving it a look. Its not perfect with the local dimming, and out of the box it was pretty terrible with it, to be honest, but once I changed the settings its been good. The biggest issue I have right now is that audio and video aren't perfectly sync'd, which I suspect is because of the cables I'm using.

Grabbed the lg c9 OLED yesterday. Had the same concerns but after scouring reddit and some third party reviews regarding likelihood of burn in decided to take the risk after finding the competitive gamers weren't having any issues after hours of gaming daily for their c8s.

Hopefully won't be wrong here!

You're going to love it. I think the lack of sets with burn in far outnumber the ones that do. It just becomes an echo chamber. What are you watching on it first?!

I dunno!!! Right now I'm watching the Seattle game and it looks amazing. I watched part of the vt uva game earlier and in regards to the convo above, the quality is much better due to film quality in the seattle game than it was for the college games. I've got a Samsung 7.14 soundbar coming this week too so I'm holding off on the full cinematic experience until then!

I'll toss in a vote for Blade Runner 2049. Godzilla king of monsters was pretty too but the movie was meh.

Thanks I'll check them out!

ooh seconded for Blade Runner 2049.

First movies I bought at 4k after we got ours was Interstellar, Blade Runner 2049, The Martian, and Dunkirk. Highly recommend Interstellar and Dunkirk because there are large portions of each movie that were shot and produced for the IMAX screens, which are full screen on 4k. They really show off how good a 4k screen is, especially on the larger screens.

Jeez. As someone who's still using a Sony Bravia from 2012... kinda makes me glad I haven't decided that I need to replace it yet. Hopefully there's some sort of standardization over the next couple years, because it would be nice to upgrade to a 4K setup at some point.

You seem like the right person to ask. this question too. I got a new 4k TV LG model 49 inch. The lag on some of the 4k content is driving me crazy. I know some of that is the streaming services (Hulu I guess is really bad), but some other video is also lagging, and I just don't know what to do to fix it. Would getting some sort of converter with faster uploading help?

Hmm that's strange. Can you define lag? Like is it stuttering? Or is it just behind the audio?

The picture stutters. I have read some tips and tried a couple different things, but sometimes it fixes one picture but then it doesn't work somewhere else.

Can you run through your setup? What devices are you using and what are you running it through? Etc.

I run everything through my receiver, however, all the literature I read says that the TV should up convert everything and no converter should be needed.

I do a bunch of streaming, very little watching of things like Blu Ray, etc.

I've read that streaming can't send the stream fast enough, so that could be causing some of the issue, ie Hulu

What's the refresh rate on your tv? Actual refresh rate, not effective refresh rate.

Good thought, it could be some kind of artificial motion blurring.

See if there is a way to turn off the "truemotion" refresh thing. Might make a difference. Might not.

What is the "other video" that is lagging? Cable? Video games? Blu-ray player? Are you using a separate streaming device (Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, etc.) or smart TV software included with the TV?

Admittedly I'm not really up to date on these technologies so I'm sure this list should be modified but off the top of my head I'd create a troubleshooting path like the following:
1. Change cables to rule out faulty cables
2. Connect streaming device directly to the TV to rule out the receiver
3. Change streaming device and connect directly to TV to rule out streaming device
4. Connect ethernet cable to streaming device and connect directly to TV to rule out WiFi

I hope you do! For the best guided experience with that rod, I recommend Knot the Reel World Fly Fishing.

My issue is with all of the idiots out there rushing to stores to buy shit for the sake of buying shit. It's all over the news, "what to buy on Black Friday!" "What to buy for your friend who has everything!" "Get out there on Black Friday and find the best deals!" My cousin's boyfriend works for Best Buy and the guy couldn't even do Thanksgiving dinner with our or his family because they have to prepare all day on Thanksgiving for Black Friday sale. That's absurd.

Americans have a problem with needing to own too much stuff. I just searched for the article I read last year but couldn't find it. The study in the article showed only 1% of gifts given on Christmas are still used after 6 months... Buy a fishing rod or buy a Green Egg if you will use them, but buying shit for the sake of buying shit is dumb and wasteful.

My family hasn't done Christmas gifts for years and it is so refreshing. If I see something throughout the year I want to get for a family member / friend as a gift, I just buy it and give it to them.

Good lord I'd love if my family quit asking people what they want all the time, quit spending money on gifts just for the sake of saying you did it only to complain about being broke two months later. How about spend some time together that doesn't involve arguing about what was last seen on facebook or not staring at the tv. The holidays are nerve racking and I'd rather spend the days off hanging with my dog than dealing with all that mess.

Buy it. Let me know in ten years how much of it gets used and how often.

I just bought 12 nest thermostats for 1600 bucks.

It is a lot easier than you think to hit $100. My parents are planning on buying the alcohol for a wedding a year in advance.

Virginia. They will likely do it but it will require a three hour drive each way.

And crossing state lines with that much alcohol without a distribution license is almost certainly illegal, but then again it's only illegal if you get caught.

Only if you have intent to sell.

Sauce, Costco provided the majority of the alcohol for my wedding. All I had to do was sign a piece of paper saying I wasn't going to sell it.

Your license to transport is the receipt for purchase. (However this may only be in-state.)

To you from failing hands we throw

@BuryHokie #ThanksFrank

Interstate transport is completely different than intrastate transport. Costco has a responsibility to ensure that they aren't selling to an illegal wholesaler, but it's not their responsibility to keep you from being caught hauling a pallet of whiskey across state lines.

It's not necessarily illegal to take some across state lines, but each state has laws governing how much and what types you are allowed to "import". I know for a fact that for some time it was illegal to transport any amount of any type of alcoholic beverage into Pennsylvania without an official permit (I know this because I looked it up before moving from VA to NY), but according to this article they finally passed a law allowing some amount of cross-border transport a few years back.

Could have gone to a VABC store on Black Friday and gotten 20% off anything.

Yes, but this way I dont look foolish carrying around 4 bottles in my hands instead of a cart and still searching for more deals.

I stock up once a year. It requires a shopping cart. 20% off on Black Friday is the only way to do it.

I gave in to Amazon and got an echo show 5 for the kitchen, a dot and a smart plug for the bedroom. Now I can pull up recipes and turn on the TV while I'm cooking, and turn on/off the bedroom light without walking over to it.

All for the low, low price of $100 and Amazon hearing every noise made in your house.

Yup...every three minutes they send data to the Amazon servers whether you're talking to it or not. Not something I want hanging around in my house. I also don't think they have much use besides asking questions while your hands are dirty and any new phone can do that now.
