Hokie Hoops Statistical Notes: Volume 3

The inaugural CMYBall campaign is now 3/8ths* over, and soon with it, the non-conference slate*. The Hokies sit 9-3 on the season, with losses coming against undefeated Dayton, a 10-4 BYU, and top 5 Duke; and 1-1 with the victory coming in the season opening road win at Clemson. Let's dive right in to see how things are looking right now.

Scoring
In an effort to clean up text for tables, here's what scoring looks like after twelve games among our top 5 scorers.

FIELD1 Year Position Scoring
Team - - 72.75
Freshmen - - 51.6
Landers Nolley II r-Fresh G/F 17.3
Naheim Alleyne Fresh Guard 10.6
Hunter Cattoor Fresh Guard 7.5
Tyrece Radford r-Fresh Guard 7.4
PJ Horne Junior Forward 8.8

Nolley has had it particularly bad in this quartet of games, having his two worst scoring performances of the season so far (4 vs VMI, 7 vs Duke). Surprisingly, Tyrece Radford has made an appearance being our #5 scorer on the season, .4 ppg ahead of starting PG Wabissa Bede.

Rebounding
It seems the previous quartet of games could be referred to as the Nolley Interregnum, as Radford has regained his spot as the Hokies' top rebounder with 6.2 rebounds per game.

Assists
Not surprisingly, as starting Point Guard, Wabissa Bede leads the team in assists with 6.42 per game. That statistic is good for 16th nationally, 7th nationally (12 game minimum), 3rd among Major conference players with the 12 game minimum, and 2nd in the ACC with the 12 game minimum.

Experience/Depth
Bede, Nolley, and Horne still remain the Three Amigos to start every game, but it seems that CMY has decided on Alleyne (11 starts) and Radford (10 starts) to round out his starting 5.

Hunter Cattoor leads non-starters in MPG with 23.5; followed by Wilkins (16.9), Cone (11.7), and Ojiako (11.5). Two other Hokies have combined for 22 minutes on the season.

Next Four
The Hokies will wrap up non-conference* play against Maryland-Eastern Shore who's one win has come against Division III Clarks Summit University. They are not a scoring threat, only averaging 54.1 ppg (3rd worst in Div 1). They are not tall and are abysmal at rebounding at 30.2 rpg (13th worst).

Next, the Hokies open up the bulk of their conference slate, traveling in-state to rival Virginia. If the Hokies can keep one or two starters from scoring, they'll look very good as this edition of the Cavaliers is somehow worse at scoring than UMES (53.8 ppg) and only looks at Arkansas-Pine Bluff as a worse offense. 6-9 PF Mamadi Diakite is the Hoos top scorer at 13.2 ppg. As a whole, the Cavaliers get 1 rebound per game more than the Hokies (36.1-35.1).

Following that, the Hokies travel to the hellhole known as Syracuse. Like UVA, Syracuse's starters are their scorers as 62.3 of their 73.7 points come from their starting 5, led by 6-6 SF Elijah Hughes's 19.8 ppg. Could be a pretty interesting matchup between him and Nolley. The Orange rebound slightly poorer than the Hokies, but have a significant height advantage.

Rounding out this quartet, returning to Cassell, the Hokies will play NC State. The Wolfpack score at a very high clip (81.6 ppg, good for 21st) and are pretty balanced as to who their scorer could be, with five averaging in double figures. NC State's rebounding numbers are similar to the Hokies, so it'll be interesting who will be better on the boards in this winnable game.
