Avoiding top competition is never a good thing

It seems that the topic de jour has been many a Hokie Fan actually being glad that we don't have to face the inveitable beat down at the hands of the mighty Seminoles. I heard this lament after the Maryland game when leaving Lane and it seems to have spread to TKP about actually being glad to avoid a top ranked team. This to me is total b.s. in every sense of what sports are about. Saying you are glad to not have a shot at a top team is tantamount to reaching down and tugging on ones nuts til they pop out and handing them over; because you won't need them anymore. For 60 minutes and 4 quarters, you step on the field to win the game or lose, but don't pray for the safety and shelter of not-losing.

Where does it say we lose if we play FSU? I know the odds and stats and everything else point to a lopsided game, but damn have some friggin stones, man! VT was a top 5 team in the ACC title game when FSU limped in after winning a pathetic Atlantic division, and they WON.

Final Score FSU 27- #5 VT 22. But,..but..but, that wasn't supposed to happen, look at the numbers, we were supposed to win, right? They play the game to decide who is better. There have been upsets often in title games, some with national title implications. KSU beat Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game, shit happens when you play football, teams win and teams lose. Stats and talking heads do not decide the outcome of games, teams and players do.

What are you going to do when a first year starting QB goes in to the Horseshoe for his second college start against a team that MIGHT be 2 years removed from losing their last game! Run? Hide? Pray for a rain out? Man the fuck up and get in there and play the game.

Right on. Go Hokies.

They messed up when they came down 81.

Couldn't agree more.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I for one think we match up pretty well against FSU.

He's no good to me dead.

I'm with you. We always play up to our competition as well.

They messed up when they came down 81.

You forgot to mention that Oklahoma was so good they still played in the national championship after losing that game. Absolutely could happen. At least it's not our players saying this stuff. I bet they would be pumped for that game.

I hope our players are pumped, but I still don't understand the fans actually wanting to dodge FSU. I heard fans all around Lane saying "We lost to Maryland, good thing we won't have to step on the field with FSU". I can't understand it.

We need to be able to upvote original posts.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

True. For now I just go and find their posts in other topics and upvote them randomly.

My thoughts exactly...I want a shot at the Noles. Hell, I don't care if we lose by 100...getting there is an accomplishment, regardless of how it happened.

And losing by 100 isn't a given. In fact, losing isn't a given. Yes, winning would be a longshot, but maybe we play our best game of the season and FSU comes out flat. That's why they play the games.

Go Hokies and go UNC, let's get to Charlotte and give FSU our best shot.

...and I'll also just add that any team that doesn't feel this exact same way will never win a national championship. I'm glad our team does, and I'm disappointed that not all of our fans do.

This is the attitude of a champion.

And with the way our guys play at the level of their opponent this year...

This is going to be great for the ACC.

This. And we THRIVE on being the underdog. A lot of "ifs" would have to happen, but it's possible. Also, as good a Winston is, he's got a little Manziel going for him in that he tends to throw it up and his receivers are great and make the play. I'd love to see out secondary match up with those receivers to see what would happen.

VT detractors can mock the Hokies with their lopsided record against top 5 teams: shooting from the hip I want to say its like 1-25 or something along those lines. But you can't ad to the '1' without being on the field against a top 5 team.

Whats next for these type of fans hoping to not play FSU? Hoping VT doesn't qualify for a bowl game because Frank Beamer's bowl record?

All these people should be fans of soccer: often times NO team wins or loses, better chance of not feeling bad.

because...

time to sack up and fight back...

Heck, we and Duke put a beating on Miami worse than FSU did but granted Duke Johnson was in the first half and half of the 3rd when FSU and the 'Canes played. Regardless, FSU was lucky to beat us last year and if we were to make it to the ACC CG and play a complete game, we have the talent to score the upset. Ya never know.

Let's get up on uva early and let them eat their own. Let their stadium be filled with their own boos. Let our guys just sit on wobbly passes and let Gayle cap off his uva hate with a 3 sack game. Let Edmunds pound his way for 25+ carries and 3 scores. Let LT finish his regular season career with another Lane Stadium East master piece with 300 yards, 3 total scores and no turnovers.

Then, if Duke can finish off a 10-2 season, tip your hat to the Fighting Cutcliffes and get ready for a bowl game (preferably the CFA or the Sun, no Russell Athletic or Belk please). If the red hot Tar Heels take Duke out, we'll pack up our bus and see what we can do in Charlotte.

Then, when we get there, let the pressure of the situation play on FSU. Keep Winston in front of us. Tackle. Trust our DB's to play their WR's as well as anyone has all year. Control the ball on offense. Trust LT to make one or two last plays and go into the fourth QTR with a chance to win.

VTBLackout, thank you for snapping me out of my pathetic state of mind. I was a part of the crowd being glad, but never before have I been so happy being shown how much of an idiot I was being. I hope we rub UVSuck's faces in the dirt and if we make it to the ACCCG I hope we come out and punch FSU right in the neck!

NEVER pass up an opportunity to make history....and crush FSU's dreams under the heel of our boots.

Go Hokies!

VHokie

What kind of losing attitude is it to not want to play a team because you might get embarrassed? I'd be more embarrassed to actually say that I was scared to play somebody. I mean we scheduled the two time defending national champion for our first game in a stadium we knew would be 3/4 bama fans, and all of a sudden we are scared to play F$U? Like the Nature Boy told us, "to be the man, you gotta beat the man!"

exit light

True. We already played Alabama this year. In '04 we played USCw to start the season and Auburn in the Sugar Bowl - both teams went undefeated and we played them both pretty close. If we beat UVA, Duke loses, and we play FSU close, then it's just the mid-season swoon we have left to grumble about.

I remember way back when Beamer's philosophy when building the program...He took EVERY opportunity to play the best teams possible and when asked about facing #1 'Bama to open the season... Frank's response: "No matter what the outcome, we will be a better football team when its over." He was right. Take every opportunity you get while its there!. GO HOKIES!

Yup. Bowden's philosophy when he was building FSU was he'd take on anyone anytime anyplace

F**in A right! I think we beat LOLUva (but we can't take them lightly), UNC beats Duke (though props to the Cutcliffe's for a hell of a season regardless), and then we play F$U close. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but I believe in Bud.

ChicagoHokie

I take it this two ways, but first. As a former athlete or maybe its just my personality I don't care who it is that we play as long as we give our all. We've all lost games that we shouldn't have at least when I played. I know how it feels to be up setted and to lose a game when I felt that we were the better more talented team period. But that's just the facts of the game someone has to lose and someone has to win. That's the bottom line. I always took it upon myself as a challenge to play the best. Because I always wanted to be the underdog never the favorite. I've found myself being the favorite I'd get complacent and start get a "Big Head". So that side of me will never go. I'm competitive and that's just the way God made me! Now, as for the others that have said that they're glad that we won't play FSU.. I think they have seen us lose so many times in big games or against good teams to the point where they get beat mentally and I can say from that aspect we've all have felt that way before. But we can't allow ourselves to stay there. I have to put myself in those fans shoes for a second they're faithful and loyal fans, they buy tickets, they show up whenever VT plays and they've witnessed losses before and sometimes seeing those losses after giving your all as a fan can take its toll to a certain degree. But we as fans got to pick them back up. I'm hoping for another chance to play for the ACC Championship against FSU this year, but if we don't I'll accept it as "it is what it is" and turn my focus and attention towards next year...

We played Alabama and with the exception of some special Teams, surprised the crap out of a lot of people.
I remember coming away from that game with a renewed sense of confidence.

If we can play against Alabama, we can certainly play against FSU.

Bring them on.

This is going to be great for the ACC.
