I cannot pls this enough.
No, really, we mean it this time!
Did he mean VAElite2VT?
So Top 20 class......
Top 15?
I also cannot pls this enough.
Pls stop
Lol I wasn't the originator if the pls, but I do find it hilarious
Just a note of caution for you overly optimistic/naive types... don't get your hopes up. It is much more pleasant to set the bar low and be excited with good news than it is to set the bar high and be disappointed when we don't land Grimes.
Edit: Told you so.... re: C. Morris
Yeah, because the optimism of everyone on this site is really running rampant...
Stunningly prescient understatement. Leg to you mi amigo.
I agree 100% that in general the mood here is more sour than necessary. I actually am way more optimistic than most about the momentum and trajectory of VT football and think that the larger conversation around the football program is more negative than reality. However, in recruiting threads the crazy optimism and ridiculous expectations rear their head with every Beau tweet. I have been around long enough to know what the odds are of us landing an elite 5* like Grimes are... and they aren't good.
I'd rather be stunned if/when he commits than gutted when he doesn't.
Same. 21 of 22 starters coming back? Bet your ass I'm optimistic about next year and going forward. But it's always in the back of my mind "we can't have nice things" or something along those lines. Sports are hard on the soul.
#2 2021 QB Brock Vandagriff pulled his commitment to Oklahoma earlier today. Is there a chance that they put the full court press on DD now?
I'd like to think DD is fully committed, and it shows on Twitter. But, they are kids, still, and you just never know.
With that being said, Oklahoma is in talks with Newman, and a couple of other grad transfers/JUCO QBs. Riley seems to gravitate towards that type of player, someone a bit seasoned in the college ranks.
Think Oregon, LSU, and Georgia (if Fromm leaves) will be kicking the tires on Newman as well.
Georgia wins
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/28460390/sources-georgi...
This was the obvious outcome once Fromm declared. I know Georgia has recruited crazy well the last few years, but they are losing a ton of production on both sides of the ball. And their o-line decimated with 4 out of 5 starters gone.....plus losing their offensive line coach (and one of the best recruiters in the country) to be the head ball coach at Arkansas.
Also a lesson in why it never hurts to have solid QB recruit every year. I am sure Georgia fans and coaches were feeling pretty good about the future at the end of last season. Fromm was looking like a first rounder and Justin Fields was waiting for him to declare. One year later, they are scouring the transfer portal for a stop gap.
They also had explosive freshman QB John Rhys Plumlee committed, but missed out on him because they couldn't promise him a spot while they held out to see what Fields was going to do. By the time Fields announced his intent to transfer officially (Jan 4th), Plumlee had been slighted enough and flipped to Ole Miss.
However, I disagree with the idea that taking a QB every year necessarily fixes this problem. They still took a QB last year, D'wan Mathis, and are taking a QB this year, Carson Beck, but through a mix of youth and a freak medical situation neither are really ready to play right away. Not to mention, it doesn't matter if you take a QB every year if multiple years of QB transfer out at the same time. If we sign DD, and he wins the job as a true frosh, then maybe everyone above him transfers, that is the era we are in right now. I think it will become extremely common for grad transfer QB's to be stop-gap options for weird QB turnover situations moving forward. The market for QB's looking to play isn't looking to decrease anytime soon.
"Starting at QB for your Oklahoma Sooners, another QB transfer... D'Eriq King!!!"
Could be wrong, but that's my bold prediction.
Hearing Chandler Morris is a Hokie!
Wow, that'd be a crazy turn of events considering most people thought he was heading to OU. Announcing tonight at 6 I think
So....Chad Morris to OC at VT if his son commits here?
Auburn already hired Chad Morris as OC
I'm sure he hasn't really gotten settled in yet. We could pluck him away.
Ohh believe me, I'd be super good with that!!
Wow. That's awesome. Tell him to bring his dad too.
And... Where are you hearing that?
Is this a joke? Lol
Holy hell it's going to be a crowded QB room, which is a good thing! Wish we had that kind of 4* recruiting depth at some other spots, but this is exciting if true!
You'd have to think that at least one QB would transfer out. Especially with DD potentially coming in 2021. Wonder if this means the end of the QP project.
Too crowded. There are only 85 scholarships, I would rather not have so many tied up to a position that plays one person all game if things go well. Give me more DBs, Safeties, or D Lineman so they can be rotated more throughout the game. We already have a crowded RB and WR room. I want more big uglies for the trenches dammit!
My emotions in order:
Happy (good QB, coaches son)
Confused (Offers from OU, Clemson, Auburn, etc.; dad is at Auburn)
Excited?!? (Can dad leave Auburn and come to VT??)
Skeptical (Probably not)
Doubtful (Stuff like this is too crazy to happen at VT)
Is "Wondering" an emotion? Because I am wondering how DD feels about this. I am sure the staff has had conversations with him about situations like this, but that kid looks awesome...I don't want us doing anything that could effect his commitment.
Same. DD is the exact kind of person and player that I want. That being said, bird in the hand and all that
I can't help but wonder how this affects DD's recruitment. He's been so outspoken on the trail, I'd hate to mess any chances with him up, if Morris ends up committing.
While i love the prospect of DD as the future quarterback at Tech, 2021 signing day is a longggg ways away. You're not gonna hear me complain about getting a 4 star 2020 QB with how much things can change between now and then.
Well
Not a joke, have some folks at the UA game who are feeding me this. Let's just say, the graphics have been built.
this strikes me as the type of insider insight that could easily be dismissed with "oh well they make a bunch of different graphics based on what the recruit tells them is his top five" or something like that. who knows
True, but it's worth some level of awareness that VT is in the conversation.
I agree with the skepticism, but I do trust my sources to be correct. Better question, does this decision (combined with the '21 qb decommitment) indicate a possible change of guard at OU?
if anything, the '21 OU decommit makes me less inclined to believe Morris actually winds up a Hokie until he signs
I don't believe any commit until they sign.
But I still like commits for the short-term adrenaline hit.
sure! but he hasn't committed yet
No adrenaline today, I guess.
Well now he has committed, except it was to Oklahoma
Absolutely, that would be my first thought as an OU fan if what you say does turn out to be true. If you are a QB right now and get an offer from Lincoln Riley, it is hard not to commit immediately with Riley's QB track record.
Lincoln Riley hasn't recruited a good QB out of High School.
Every starting QB he's had that's gone on to the NFL has been a transfer.
OU - Hurts - Alabama Transfer
OU - Murray - Texas A&M Transfer
OU - Mayfield - Texas Tech Transfer
ECU - Carden - 0 NFL snaps, 2 year Arena League player, current HS coach
ECU - Davis - BC/FSCC Transfer
You mean the Qb's he's had success with haven't been recruited by him? Cause they have a 5 star that redshirted this year and will be taking over next year. Kid was #11 overall recruit in 2019.
The previous poster had commented on high school players committing to Riley because of his track record. I was just pointing out that his production has mainly come from players someone else recruited first.
Lincoln Riley has signed and then put fewer 5* QBs out of high school in the NFL than Jim Cavanaugh.
I took it as "Who wouldn't want to play for a coach that in the past 3 years had a runner up and 2 heisman winners plus 2 #1 draft picks at QB"
3 players who were previously coached by Kliff Kingsbury, Kevin Sumlin, and Nick Saban
Although if we're talking about Murray, his position coach was Jake Spavital (current HC Texas St) who also coached Brandon Weeden, Geno Smith, Johnny Manziel, Kyle Allen, and Davis Webb
Thats fine if that's how you feel, but a 17 year old recruit is going to see those heisman trophies and #1 picks and the fact that they played for Riley when those happened. This really isn't hard to understand but feel free to dig those heels in some more.
Also your original commment was Riley hasn't recruited a good quarterback out of high school, when he literally signed the #1 QB in the 2019 class.
I think it's just more likely that Riley finds success with another transfer this year than with a 5* recruit, as the available data indicates.
I have no idea what OU's scholarship situation looks like, but I can see him getting a guy like Jett Duffey from Texas Tech or Jamie Newman from Wake.
I wish every recruit had the same level of commitment to Tech as you do to this take.
Ok, yes, my wording on my original post was incorrect. I further edited myself on my next by stating recruiting a 5* AND putting that player in the NFL.
I gotta agree with StineyDraw that this take is really confusing, if not borderline insane. Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray both transferred after only their true freshman seasons. Mayfield was at OU for 4 years and Murray was there for 3 years and both showed massive improvement compared to their freshman seasons. Why would Lincoln Riley not get some credit for that? Also, Murray left early for the NFL or else Hurts never would have been a Sooner. If Murray stays, he likely has another outstanding season before OU transitions to Spencer Rattler (the 5* recruit mentioned) as the starter next year. In that situation, it doesn't make Lincoln Riley's influence look even remotely as questionable as your previous post implied.
Finally, I'll point out that Riley is only 36-years old, so he doesn't have a lengthy coaching history based on that limitation alone, was named head coach in June 2017, and at that time OU had Mayfield returning as a senior starter with Kyler Murray on the roster (he transferred in December 2015). The first recruiting class Riley signed as a head coach was the class of 2018- even if he had signed a star QB (while already having Mayfield, Murray, and Austin Kendall on the roster), that player wouldn't even be eligible for the NFL draft yet. So is the knock on Riley that it took him until the Class of 2019 to sign the #1 rated QB and he hasn't recruited a QB who became the day 1 starter over two Heisman winners (Murray and Hurts), win the Heisman himself, and then successfully sue the NFL to become draft eligible after one/two seasons of playing?
Yeah, they signed the #1 QB in 2019....but let's be honest, that's only because clemson wasn't taking a QB last year.
It's makes me sad to think that is the truth. I wish it was a joke :-(
And deemed they were not good enough to be the starter at their previous schools. He spent one year with each of them and so far 2 were first rounders and heisman winners and the last one was the heisman runner up. There's no one in college football with that kind of track record in 3 straight years.
I believe I said it is hard not to commit to him given his track record with QBs. Regardless of if he recruited a kid from HS (Shane Carden was pretty damn good at ECU by the way even if he didn't do well in the NFL), he still recruited them to come play for him.
It sounds like your argument is he hasn't taken a super star player out of high school and turned them into an NFL player in 4 years instead of the 1 year he did for all 3 of his transfer QBs because the other schools raised them from high school?
you still trust your sources?
He was obviously wrong. To you and about the 5 other posters in this thread, what's the point of rubbing salt into the wound?
He needs to learn his lesson
TKP's go to move has been rubbing salt in the wound this season.
That's why we should...
Fire Corny!
/s
I thought it was a legitimate question.
But to go more in detail, it seems lately like we have more and more people say their "sources" tell them this and that, back it up with other info/posts, in this case, graphics being created, but then to be false... I would ask, what's the point of posting such comment? Obviously there is no official way to vet people with "sources" but I like to see ones who have a proven track record, like BAGS or LAHokie. Creates a lot of noise IMO. Sure people like posts with optimism but he doubled down and was wrong and as a result, created a useless discussion of what we are going to do with all the QB's? what this means for DD? etc.
More like ShamKancellor... amirite?
This was a leg heist!! Sham got away with 15 legs!!
Quick get him guys before he cashes them in for an expired Hardee's coupon.
Your "folks" are frauds
Take every "sauce" with a grain of salt
We've all been burned by sauces.
Mine was with Malcolm Greene. My sauce was one of his coaches.
And......he commits to Oklahoma
Reading through this thread just now was pretty funny lol.
Definitely aged well.
Well I will say that seeing all these players we were in on early that ended up somewhere else playing hurts just a little right now.
Jeff Sims is going to be a problem.
I have no idea what is going on here. This is the first recruiting thread I've visited in years and it's going way faster than I can keep up with.
You must be pretty slow for a horse on a treadmill...
All joking aside this hasn't even approached getting out of control yet.
You could say he is going nowhere fast
Even if he speeds up, he'll never get very far.
See it's this mat with different conclusions you can jump too...
A former coworker of mine, has a son who is a long snapper in Culpeper. How does he camp or get in touch with Shibest?

Stewart Jones HUDL Link
Maybe like Twitter or email or phone.
I laughed, he's got interest from App State and Coastal, so I'm hoping he gets a scholarship soon. He's worked his ass off.
What was funny? That is literally the way to get in touch. I think he just needs to email a bunch of coaches and support staff if he wants a look by the VT staff. All emails are on the website and twitter is also a great tool.
honestly, cause i feel kinda stupid for asking.
Use a turkey call.
Any word on Mcglothern? We still in on him or has that ship sailed?
Doesn't look like it's happening. I think USCw is the leader if I recall
Wasn't he responding to USCe folks on twitter using "we" or was it always USCw? I think this kid will be an uncertain get until Feb signing day.
trojans
think it'd be a major win if we land him. lots of Big Dogs™ cranking up their efforts
SoCal looks to be the betting favorite at the moment, but if he takes an OV to VT we still have a shot. If he cancels all his OV's then it's probably a sign he has fully locked in to USCw.
Rashad Battle is another name to keep any eye on for CB in the late signing period.
The late period has added an interesting dynamic with the vast majority of recruits signing on ESD where you see the guys who wait until February sometimes start to get crazy interest from higher tier teams who maybe missed on other prospects and now are trying to fill a need to close out the class. It's a risky proposition to forgo an opportunity to lock in a scholarship spot in someone's class in the early period, but for some guys it pays off with a chance to go to a school who otherwise wouldn't have extended an offer. For VT, this can be a blessing and a curse. For example, I think we were in a really good spot with ILB DJ Lundy, but UGA got involved late, and if they extend a committable offer that pretty much seals that we won't land him.
We've lost a couple guys due to this the last 2 years. Javontea Jean-Baptiste, and maybe that Canadian CB last year?
I don't know why I'm doing this but... Eugene Asante.
JJB was the first name that popped into my head, wound up at Ohio St. Then Eugene Asante did as well. We were his first P5 offer and he took his OV with us , then in the week before signing day he picked up half a dozen other P5 offers and didnt sign. Then took 3 OVs in January before signing with UNC. We needed to close that one.
Out of curiosity looked it up to see how he did at OSU this year and looks like he redshirted be interesting to see how he pans out in the shoe
Was thinking JJB went to Michigan but must have him confused with someone else a cycle or two ago; seems who I am thinking about was Canadian.
Benjamin St-Juste I think. He had to medically retire.
Ah, that's it, thanks!
What if I told you that the first guy in the video was a 5 star recruit?
kinda looks like asajj ventress

Victor Vaz from Gotham.
Ok fine; technique of Rick James bitch!

But the looks of Ed Kowalcyk

Lead singer from Midnight Oil.
I thought of the guy from Weird Science
Can't wait for season 3
Incredible show. Noho Hank is perfect.
AKA NoHo Hank from Barry!
I'm going with:
OR
This sounds like an opening line for an ESPN 30 for 30 😂
S/N: Didn't realize we gave him an offer in May 19'
That was haunting to watch
I am not trying to be critical on the kid but he does look like a baby giraffe walking for the first time doing the drill. I mean he is obviously a 5 star for a reason but two things can be true at once, he can be a great player and look goofy in a 4 second clip and then that clip can be forgotten about tomorrow....but be funny for a day.
No doubt, and I wasn't trying to rag on you for posting the video, I have watched it many many times today, lol...just adding perspective from the guys coach
Don't get me wrong, I wish like heck he was coming to play for VT.
His coach is Ty Taylor. You'd think he'd put in a good word for his alma mater...
I remember doing certain "football" drills and thinking they were overly complex and idiotic but I've gotta say this drill doesn't look that complicated. It's not one thing either but the combination of the crop top, facial expression, open handed slaps, and unflinchingly upright posture created a truly awkward, bizarre clip for a top level athlete.
This is exactly it. The clip looks like a Key and Peele parody of top talent doing drills
The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent, to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, let's give it back
This is why I don't like Twitter and the other instantaneous response/instant gratification social medias. Friggin' leave the kid alone. A 4 sec clip and people get all judgmental with absolutely no context available. Jeesh, let it go.
even with the context, he looks objectively ridiculous
That is what I mean. SO WHAT. Why do we have to do this to kids whom we might be targeting in recruiting on forums where they see it? Jeesh, its just plain stupid.
Would you do that to your kid? No, you'd work with him to fix his technique. We aren't that person for this kid, someone else will fix it. The kid is what ... 17 or 18. Certainly he has LOTS of time to improve. None of us had ourselves wired when we were that age.
I just can't stand it when we feel were so entitled by our keyboards to jump in and critique each other without knowing each other etcetera. Jeesh!
Let. It. The. Frick. Go.
I am just pissed off about this stuff cause it is happening everywhere. Chumps, you're a great poster on this board, and I love your posts (for the most part) but this kind of stuff is not adding to our social fabric, we all need to think before we do this.
I think you are looking at this from a completely different angle than most other people.
The clip went viral outside of TKP. It's not some exclusive thing with our community/website discussing it. In fact, there's an extremely low chance he comes across TKP even if if he's browsing the internet specifically looking for comments on it. I feel like people here are treating it like every other viral video where something funny happens- it just so happens this one features a highly rated football recruit. So I somewhat get feeling bad for the kid but at least he's not some no name guy getting bowled over by an elite recruit on a highlight reel- he's still an elite recruit who is going to get a free ride at any school he wants and a chance at the NFL.
Finally, these comments are not going to matter whatsoever when it comes to his commitment so you definitely don't need to be concerned about that. And no, he was never going to come to VT.
That's fair. My comment applies to a larger audience (read: beyond TKP) as well.
>something looks silly
>the reaction is "haha look at how silly the thing is"
>our social fabric must be deteriorating because we called the silly thing silly
OK, I'm 59. A little old school, but hardly grumpy.

and
And now you know why CJF protects our guys as much as possible. Can you imagine the uproar that would follow if stuff like this came out of practice?
I would watch his highlight videos and find out why. Looks pretty strong and quick off the block to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo9swyTY8ns
what if you watched the first guy in the videos film and he was indeed a 5star. a lot of people have been clowning this kid without knowing his circumstances or anything about him. The kids coach came to his defense and stated this kid has NEVER seen a or done a bag drill in his life, that at the school he goes to they are really under funded and have minimum equipment to work with. so that was literally the first time hed ever done a bag drill. is he a little stiff yes. hes 6"6" 240 and has a MOTOR on him like not many. he plays TE, DE, OLB. check his HUDL and his highlights. I bet hed be a 5 star VT would love to have. (regardless of his film because it would make our recruiting rankings go up and we don't care about actual production)
FWIW Dwight Mcglothern just committed to LSU. VT was a hat on the table
Yeah this is called "that offer just became committable" and you commit right away.
Man, I thought he was USC bound from what I had seen.
Our shot was 2.5 miles long with that he never came on a single visit. LSU likely told him he was a take and he jumped on it. Good for him like that we're getting on the table with big texas guys.
Sooo apparently UGA released Zach Evans' NLI, according to ESPN.
Whats going on there? He in trouble or something?
🤷♂️
#TX2VT
Not for this kid
He's got some attitude baggage
Rumors on Reddit is he has had multiple physical altercations with his high school coaches, refused to stop using his phone during team meetings, got sent home from his high school state championship game, etc. Major attitude issues basically.
They talked about it at the UA all American game. Said he was delaying his announcement and had an interview with him and Deion about it.....he admitted in the interview that he was selfish and hurt his team (I'm guessing he was a silent commit to GA)
I read that he was suspended early in the year a couple of games for attitude stuff and then he got sent home the day before the state championship because he refused to give up his cellphone.....coaches wanted everyone to give them up so they would have full focus on the game and he refused. I applaud the coaches for sticking to their guns and sending home the #1 RB in the nation before that game.....though with our future QB on the team that decision is probably easier to make.
I watched a couple minutes of that game early and remember then mentioning that in the broadcast. Something along the lines of "super talented but needs to figure "it" out."
Wait, you have to play 20 questions with 90s Nickelodeon actors to play college football now?
Thank you for reading my hamfisted old reference, have a nice day.
Good recap here
https://www.vype.com/zach-evans-saga-continues--whats-next
They elude to a lot of red flags
I know many Hokie fans who would want him, red flags be damned.
Yeah well fans don't have to put up with any of the shit and will just blame the coaches or support staff if anything goes wrong.
After reading up on it on reddit I wouldnt go near that kind of project sure if you could change his attitude but that aint easy and its a big risk if it doesnt work out. Added context from a post on r/CFB today.
Would argue as well that DD could be a really good source for our coaching staff on whether he would be a decent fit or not if DD would feel hesitant that would be more than enough to know stay away.
For anyone who wants to read more on this the comment section is full of other tidbits
https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/elh5z1/5_rb_zach_evans_has_been_re...
Sad thing is he even tried to get back in with Bama and the staff was pretty much like "thanks, but no thanks," and let other RB's commit instead. Kid has been self-sabotaging himself at every step, and I think he realized it way, way too late if he's truly realized it at all. Might end up having to go JUCO anyway.
I feel bad on the level that he literally doesn't have a fully developed brain yet, scientifically speaking, and maybe he went through some tough shit growing up, but on the other hand it's like man you have the golden ticket in front of you right now if you just don't go out of your way to mess this up. He doesn't even have to be an amazing person, just don't constantly self-sabotage yourself.
It seems that he wouldn't just be a problem in the locker room, but in Blacksburg as well. Bluntly, I don't want this guy at Tech.
Trevon Hill was a massive red flag, and Beamer kept the scholarship. IIRC, he was kicked off his HS team, and suspended from school his senior year. He came to Tech, got kicked off the team, albeit with a different coach, but got his degree, and transferred. He was also productive on the field.
We had a kicker with a drug issue, Beamer gave him a chance.
A star player on the team in the late 90s could have gone to jail over a dustup with an ex gf. Beamer gave that kid a chance. Dr. Torgesen, whenever he told this story, never shared the player's name, but said that it could have decided the season.
Fuente gave a few players, more than a few chances, and may have allowed that to lead to the locker room chemistry issues last offseason. I don't think Fuente and co would go that route now, knowing how things went before with bad team chemistry.
I wholly support giving kids a chance, they are kids. But, sometimes, the chances can be too many, or not be worth the energy.
Davidson retweeted this today. I know Davis our commit is in this pic, but the lady that posted it seems to be an Evans family member.....I have no idea, but thought it was interesting with the current conversation.
Dang. That's got to be a hard conversation to hear from doctors.
As tough as this is on the kids I'm actually happy that it appears to be a little more common than it used to be. I would bet that this decision should have been made many times with many kids in the past and they chose to ignore it, most likely to their own detriment
From Moneyball:
Such a good quote/movie
Jake Fromm announces hes entering the draft early interesting to see who lines up at qb for next year hearing rumbles they will be pursuing Jamie Newman hard
That one's also interesting
As was mentioned, looks like he's got a craving for creamsicles. Knoxville bound
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/28447613/georgia-sophom...
I think he's going to Tennessee.
Bizarre situation. He would have started wherever he wanted on the Georgia OL next season and could go to the NFL after. Now he is headed to Tennessee, will have to sit out a year unless he gets a waiver, and delay his potential NFL move by at least a year.
UGA OL coach is the new HC at Arkansas and looks like there will be a lot of change across the UGA OL. But yeah, strange that he didn't just stick it out for a year and then enter draft
Recent developments with the lawsuit with his dad and UGA make me think he will get a waiver.
Recent developments with the lawsuit with his dad andUGA make me think he will get a waiver.FIFY
He'll get a waiver cause SEC
UGa starting a graduate transfer at QB would be quite the switch after all the QBs that have transferred out of that program recently. Interesting times.
Grad transfers have started this trend, but when college football goes full-on free agency all the sunshine pumpers will get a harsh reality check when G5 and non-elite P5 teams become nothing but development programs to fill the holes on the top dogs rosters each offseason. Wake basically just developed and prepped Newman for a few years to become the Georgia/Oregon/Oklahoma/etc. QB
I remember those silly takes about how the freedom of movement from school to school will benefit the lower teams... I'm happy for the players in this case I guess, but it's hilarious that people thought this would do anything but make life even easier on the top teams.
I think its funny people say the players are "locked in". They chose to go there and if something big changes (their coach leaves) you can leave free and clear.
Freedom would only turn NCAAF into the MLB where the big players can control the narrative. Recruiting would turn into the blue bloods saying "accept an offer to school XYZ and get the playing time/coaching. When our player moves on we will then extend you a scholarship and you can come play for us"
that's not true
You're right I misinterpreted the rule. My fault.
Second point still stands.
Agree, particularly with how the "name" programs seem to have different rules in terms of waivers than others (Justin Fields to OSU and Tate Martell to Miami being prime examples). Fields left for no other reason than he did not want to sit behind Fromm; then Martell was the domino. Yet, you have players like Brock Hoffman who had a legitimate reason for waiver get denied because of utterly ridiculous rules.
The situation is only going to get worse as player compensation becomes involved; at some point its going to literally become a bidding war.
The truth about the NCAA is they are in for whatever will make them a buck. The idea of the Student-Athlete in the non-Olympic sports is mostly a farce. If CFB essentially becomes like the Minor Leagues with AAA Programs, AA Programs, and A Programs, then it will be fine for them as long as the money is rolling in. Programs will languish, fans of the non-AAA Programs will suffer, but Mark Emmert and his buddies will be too deep in cash to care.
FL2VT
Yes, please.
HOLY SHIT!!! We the big dogs now! 2021 is THE year (and yes, I have been drinking)
EDIT: I didnt know that kids from Northwestern HS left the state...if he committed this is HUGE!
If JHam brings in a kid with this rating in his first year, I'm writing him in for President.
Saunders doing some crootin'
Also seeing Gavin Barthiel posting #FL2VT.
2021 unranked OLB from Lake Gibson
Something about this offseason seems different. We're getting recognition from big time 4+*. Land a handful of these guys and the hype train is going to the moon.
And this is different how?
1) we already have a big time cornerstone 21 commit
2) the [state]2VT hashtag is all over Twitter.
3) We're building recruiting connections with states with have 0 history with.
1) VT has had big time cornerstone commits before.
2) Woo hoo...a hashtag. Do you think it's the only hashtag flying around out there in twittergram world?
3) So far VT has
1 LOI2 LOIs from Texas recruits. And one 2021 commit. Otherwise lots of definite possible maybes. Meanwhile VT's primary Florida recruiter for the past 20 yrs is now at NC St...Tomato. Tah-mato. I don't see a substantive difference in the level of wishful thinking or the rationales behind it.
My how the tide has shifted in 10 days...
Apologies for calling rinse and repeat...rinse and repeat.
You can have your stance and I'll eat this crow but I don't think I'll have to. Bold take we're not rinsing and repeating. Bolder take we're going to sign one of if not our highest ranked class in the next 3 years.
Our staff is full of recruiters. We lost Wiles who recruited everything except his own position well. We have coaches aligned where they should be. I'm fully ready to be let down by my takes but the program is in a better position now than it has been since Fu took over.
I hope you're right too. I'd love nothing more than to see VT consistently move into that 15 or so range in recruiting.
However IMO the changes at VT are to the least important factors in recruiting and little has changed at VT wrt to the most important factors which drive recruiting success.
Don't we have 2 LOIs from Texas recruits? Bryant and Wooten

Cool graphic.
Looks like he previously committed and de-committed to UF. 247 doesn't show an offer from us though
Assuming this is a response to the Terrance Lewis chain, I'm guessing this was him saying he got an offer from us
Beau Davidson was pointing to this tweet by Raleek Brown.
2022 signing day is an eternity away, but 247 rates this kid the #1 RB in the country.
OH SHIIIIIT STOCKTON BOIS!!!!
Anybody have any idea if we are still in with Aaron Willis, high 4 star LB from Md for 2021 who committed to us like 2 years ago and decommitted last year? Haven't heard much about him since his decommit.
Looks like CBs to Bama
Yea but its 1 of 1 and that was entered a while ago. My question is more about whether or not we are still recruiting him and whether or not he still has any interest.
Hank South and Tim Watts (in particular) are very reliable for Bama. However, you have to keep in mind that Bama might lead for a guy like Willis, and get a CB, only for Bama to land two higher rated ILB's and then Willis is no longer a take, or is a much lower priority. Happens every year to teams like Bama, Clem, OSU, etc.
So, all that to say, there is a path where Bama cools on him and he looks elsewhere, but idk if we would be where he looks after that. My gut guess is that he would look to that tier above us (Mich, PSU, Florida, etc) first. His big connection to VT was explicitly stated to be Bud Foster so unless we have a new guy on him recruiting hard I think we may be out of that race, but recruiting is very fluid. Our lead up to ESD a few weeks ago is a great example of how quickly things can shift.
Must be nice to be able to offer a .9548 four star and then have it become non-committable when you get commitments from 2 higher ranked guys.
It is truly an embarrassment of riches that is a reality for a handful of elite teams each recruiting class. Though I am not saying that will be what happens with Willis, just saying that is probably the path to him going elsewhere.
We are recruiting Cali now, too? This is doing my head in
If you can't get the in state talent, take everyone elses. #Merica2VT
Anthony Carter, 2020 OT from Butler in Charlotte to NC State. Had a VT offer amongst others
Adding to this, it would have been surprising for us to sign more OL in the 2020 class. We already signed Parker Clements and Kaden Moore and have both solid depth and youth across the OL right now. Overall I'd say the OL is easily in the best short and long-term shape it has been in my entire time following VT football.
Agree and it's not even close. I feel pretty good about our OL crootin and the shape the room is in, and I would also love to keep that up moving forward (e.g. Wyatt Milum, from Doug Nester's HS). I would love to see the player development and on-field performance start "catch up" to the recruiting. Still not entirely sold on what appears to be passive blocking, but I think we saw some of that change when Jerry Kill came around.
Beau Davidson has a recruiting net cast across America.
Oh shit. We west coast crootin??

VT recruiting going interplanetary

Hot take: if we sign the first Martian recruit we're probably going to be favorites to win the Natty, so it's not a bad recruiting strategy.
That would be one hell of a black hole.
Our punter would like to have a word with you.
Leek Brown or Zach Evans; off field issues or not would be program changing commits. Again as I eluded to a little while back it seems Evans biggest issue is grades and he may end up as a JuCo which ultimately may help Tech to potentially get him.
Hard pass
You are right, but maybe program changing for the worse. If SEC schools don't want him solely based on off-field issues, what have you seen from CJF that makes you think he would even remotely consider it?
On-field results are not the only factor in recruiting. Us fans do not have to babysit these kids.
Just to play evil's advocate a bit, but the way I see it, the programs turning him down are clearly in a situation where the risk just isn't worth the reward. The quality of player they already have or think they can find in his place bridges the gap enough that the potential baggage really just isn't worth it.
I would imagine though that there probably are at least some P5 programs that do think the reward is worth the risk if the perceived reward is him being a program changing player (maybe this whole thing humbles him? maybe they think/hope they can reign him in? who knows).
Go read the book "The No Asshole Rule." There's lots of evidence that star performers who are "assholes" in one form or another hurt the production of an entire team, and that almost always, when you get rid of that one person, even if they were by far your biggest performer, the performance of everybody else rises enough to surpass the gap between that person and everyone else.
Hard pass from me.
Cough, Bryce Harper, cough, cough.
I have no idea whether Bryce is a good guy or not, but isn't it interesting how the Nats win it all immediately after he departs.
May be... It may sound goofy - you look at synergy (whole is greater than the sum of it's parts), basically, the asshole, or if anyone, for any reason, keeps a team from that, they should go. In team sports, that's usually the guy that's a problem in the locker room.
As a Steelers fan, I wish this would have held true with the departure of Antonio Brown. I know, I know, Steelers also lost Ben, but while Ben was there the offense was not looking that much better. Instead of being better, the Steelers were the only team in the NFL not to score more than 30 points in a single game this season and for the first time since 1971.
They were a wildcard team. They got hot and rode a hot pitcher.
No wild card WS winner has ever won their division the following year.
Well, in his opening interview with the Phillies, he *did* say that he wanted to bring a championship back to DC.

Have we ever landed multiple 5 stars in a class? Because next year may be the best chance we have. 2021 should be a program changer for VT
via GIPHY
My biggest reason for saying that is I think DD ends up as a 5 star and there are several other fringe high 4/5 star players that are giving us serious consideration, I think this class will go down as VT's best rated class ever, unless something really falls apart
I'm hopeful, right there with you; however, I've been let down far too many times. So I'll keep my expectations extremely low.
If things fall apart down the stretch I'm gonna be pretty dejected, can't lie.
The last 5 star QB we had did pretty well from 2007-2010, 3 ACC titles.
The last 5 star CB would have been on some championship teams, if we just...ugh. I feel like we owe Kendall. All the Fullers, really. Notably Vincent, cause he's the oldest, and we all know the oldest always gets it the hardest.
Sorry to be Mr. Nit-Pick, but Sean Glennon was the starting QB in the 2007 ACC title game. Tyrod led VT to the titles in 2008 and 2010.
Also, Vincent Fuller was on an ACC championship team in 2004, and the offense was quite good that season.
We go no where in 2007 without Tyrod. I will never forget the FSU game that year. Watching Tyrod from the north end zone scamper for an impossible first down will forever be engrained in my memory.
Yeah, that's the whole point of my comment. Everybody forgets Vinny.
Tyrod against FSU in 2007 is an iconic moment for me. That was the beginning of me always feeling like we had a chance to win if Tyrod is in the game. That one throw he made scrambling to his left, perfectly to Harper's outside shoulder was absolutely incredible.
should we expect 2-4 commits after the weekend?
Maybe if it's not raining and they get a full visit in.. And don't get talked out of a commit by their parents. I guess you never know. I feel like my knowledge wasn't too bad considering 3/4 committed and signed with us and the other one is a top recruit for next year that we are leading the pack on currently
who's visiting this weekend?
Lol its gonna be like 70 fucking degrees this weekend
I feel like that is false advertising for Blacksburg in January, but I'll take it!
Its accurate for virginia weather though
It actually sounds pretty accurate. Wake up it'll be 8 degrees, 70 by noon, 45 when you go to sleep, wake up to like 3 degrees. Throw every type of precipitation possible in the middle of the cycle for at least 5 minutes
A new take on bait and switch
Joe Cox is the new TE coach for South Carolina. It just got harder to croot in the Charlotte area.
Is he a really cool guy or does he just have a lot of bags of money?
No, he's a very good recruiter who has ties back to the Charlotte area. He played at Independence and was an assistant at Mallard Creek.
Luckily he'll be looking for a new job soon enough. Muschamp's seat is the hottest of hot.
Beau Davidson seems to have taken us national....
#nattybeau
I like the double entendre.
I'm more worried about losing Davidson before the NSD for the 2021 class than I am Davis.
Given that our DL and DC positions are now filled... I would hope the staff has contacted Quincy Roche, DE grad transfer from Temple. Apparently UNC, Miami, GT, and OSU are current favorites.
Link
Prob too late. Temple Insider just CB to Miami. He's going there this weekend for a visit
If he's dumb enough to go to Miami in its current state we don't want him
i don't understand why he'd grad transfer instead of just entering draft
I thought this guy would for sure big dog us, but it's rather annoying when three of his four favorites are Coastal teams who finished below us in 2019.
Another Florida kid, class of '21, 4 star WR
via GIPHY
I've noticed Tyree is pretty much jumping on every one of these too.
tyree is our top recruiter.
Need one or two of those in every class
Do we have a real shot with these FL recruits? That would be a hell of a start to go along with DD.
its early, but we are recruiting south florida. going in the "U" back yard right now. and these kids aint tweeting the old generic "blessed to get an offer from so and so" they are tweeting #FL2VT that's a movement, that's recognition, some will say its just a tweet, but to be honest its not a tweet anyone tweeted as a movement 2 years ago for anyone in Florida but me lol (not trying to take credit, more of a fake belief in starting my own movement and trying to get more 904 guys to VT because I loved having guys from my area on the team, all that kinda snowballed really fast for me). I think the power of social media these days cannot be understated. when you get a bunch of the country/states top recruits all getting on board with these things the kids take notice. they get interested like hey what is VT doing over there and how can we be a part of the trend. If the staff can close some of these and keep everything going the way it is its going to be big time. I know the staff thinks we have a real shot with these guys. the twitter stuff isn't just smoke. the fire is burning right now.
+1 thanks for the color and everything you do down there!!
Thadius Franklin Jr., 4 star RB, 2021; teammate of Bralon Brown
yup lots of headway in florida the last couple days. specially in the deep south. Ham is working some magic. with some help from the rest of the staff. if we can land just some of these guys the 21' class is going to go stupid dumb! we will literally be big doggin kids turning away highly rated kids as no longer takes because we have higher rated kids. the staff is VERY optimistic that the 21 class is going to be the best in the history of VT when its all said and done. LORD PLEASE LET US WIN 10 GAMES NEXT YEAR! I need this staff together for the results of the 21 class and to get this thing done. I'm optimistic that VT is actually for once turning the corner and not just talking about it. the only thing that worries me is some in game coaching decisions that can derail the whole thing by instead of being a 10 win team we are a 7 win team.
Exciting to hear. One thing I think that is lost in the coaching and other discussions is running a football program is a lot about talent acquisition and your acquire talent with your sales pitch. Some of that pitch is program, facilities, tradition, conference, etc.
Another part of the pitch is you style and coaching staff that go hand in hand. I see the coaching changes firmly about freshening up the sales pitch to attempt to acquire better talent (especially on defense). This doesn't mean it will work, but anyone who tries to use the NFL argument against us on D-line will be met with a solid counterpoint based on the new staff pitch (scheme+experience+coaching perspective).
You have to give credit for adjusting and having the guts to make those moves. This place laments the staff when recruits are missed. The plan here is obviously to make changes to change the outcomes. At least this thought is recognized and gives us a fresh opportunity.
I am irrationally hyped during the offseason for a season multiple years away
most times I don't think win/loss has much to do with recruiting momentum all that much. but in this instance. 7 wins and we could be looking at a new head coach and that would completely ruin any recruiting momentum we are building right now. Fuente has to capitalize on the returning players and finish games. keeping corny this year (which I personally am ok with) didn't buy Fuente any time, he wont be able to fire corny next year if it goes bad to save his job imo. if there was a year to do it, it was this year. eventually now we will have to either fire an OC who wins us 9-10 games a season (much like stinespring) or Fuente and his whole crew will be booted out the door. this is a MUST win season for Fuente not just for him but for the program unless we want to be set back another 4-5 years.
Wouldn't make sense to me to entirely blowup the staff and start fresh with a top recruiting class coming in for '21.
If the defense falters in '20, it's growing pains. If the offense is still lackluster, a new OC should be expected for '21.
You fire the HC and the entire staff and you're basically starting from scratch with recruits, so you'll lose some of that class, relationships with future classes, and the program is screwed (unless Urban Meyer is coming, and that's not happening $$$$).
If the defense falters in 2020, when you bring back 10 starters and you went the safe (cheap) route of hiring a guy who knew Bud's scheme and will likely run something very similar, that would be a very, very bad look. I really don't want that to be an excuse for why this team under performs next year.
The point is - Fuente is not at risk of being fired next year.
I hope the team is really successful in '20 and wins 10+ games, but a team can lose a few close games and be 7-5 instead of 10-2. That is not a reason to fire a head coach and blow up a program.
I'm not sure I agree. A seven win 2020 campaign should, and likely would, cost Fuente his job.
Woulda coulda shoulda - not debating hypotheticals, but he's not on the hot seat.
If Fuente wins 7 games with another soft schedule and 20 returning starters, and you've got faith we're going to be consistently challenging for the ACC Championship beyond that, you've got a lot more faith than I do.
Do or die time. Coaching moves are his. No excuses.
Not debating hypotheticals. Next year is not do or die.
7 wins regardless of how close the losses are is awful next year. If we had a tough slate maybe but we're taking about a bad coastal.
You can point at this year and say we were as many plays away from 6 wins as we were from 10 or 11. That's how football works if your not able to make those games fall in your favor that's on you as a coach.
Not debating hypotheticals. What I write below is not meant to be harsh so don't take it that way.
That's right, coaches get the team in position to win, and the players on the field have to step up and win the game. Judge the coaches for what they do, and the players for what they do. Sometimes the players on the other team step up and make the plays for their team, and they win. Fuente is around 10-7 across four years in one score games, and 3-4 last year *. A few plays away from 10+ wins. That's exactly what football is, that's why we love it, and that's why we want better players in '21, who probably won't really be making big impacts until '22 or '23. Fire Fuente next year and kiss your '21 class goodbye. Start from scratch, good luck. HaHaHa
EDIT:
* Counting the hoo and tucky games as 1 score games because losing a fumble/TD on the last play twice, but I didn't go back to previous years to check on those type games.
Would you consider debating hypotheticals?
I want to give you more than one leg for this comment. Here's two more.
If Fuente only wins 7 games next year he is 100% gone. That's not hypothetical.
You got deep pockets or close to someone who does? There'll be a lot of wanting Fu gone if that's the case but where's the money coming from?
Sure don't, but the poster saying it absolutely won't happen at 7 wins is incorrect and that's what I'm discussing. I don't think we come close to under achieving that much next year and would be happy to book my tickets to the ACC Championship game right now to watch my Hokies. That's how highly I think of this team, that's where the expectations are with the big money you're referencing as well. So to say that he absolutely won't be let go if we win 7 games, I just don't agree.
might not like it but he'll stay on with 7 wins. He'd have to tank next season hard, miss a bowl and lose to UVA badly again to be let go.
Next year's schedule includes the powerhouse teams of liberty, middle Tenn, and North alabama- if we can find it in our power to overwhelm these 3 for a win, we then have our coastal rivals, pedo st, and Louisville left. 9 teams and if we go 4 and 5 against these nine to power out a 7 win season with 19 of 22 returning starters- the big donors are going to say okay stay on another year? Okay maybe they do keep him, but I am not sure why. How will they show improvement in 2021? Coaching evaluation needs to happen with you at your strongest to be fair. I am not trying to argue, just want to know what are our expectations out of fuente.
We should go no worse than 3-1 non-conference
Add in what shouldbe able to beat BC at home. Louisville on the road will probably be a tossup. (5-1 or 4-2)
I think we go 4-2 or 5-1 in division, putting the record being anywhere from 8-4 (5-3) to 10-2 (7-1).
7-1 in conference should put us in the ACCCG. 5-3 will depend on the rest of the division.
Not saying I agree or disagree. Just the reality. He'll stay on with 7 wins.
It will also suck if a giant meteorite hits the earth next year.
But nobody is predicting that, so what's the point of discussing it?
To be clear, I'm not predicting that, just responding to the above conversation about hypotheicals/how it's not possible. Next year this is a 9+ win team and that's my prediction. Would you like to discuss that? When did this board change over to only discussing things that have already happened?
To be clear, I have no problem whatsoever with people discussing that, but this is the recruiting thread.
You're correct on that. Should have made the point and moved on. Leg for you sir!
No way. Whit too smart for that. Would take a complete implosion to even consider a change
"Wouldn't make sense to me to entirely blowup the staff and start fresh with a top recruiting class coming in for '21"
We're projecting a lot about the 2021 class.
Don't see any way JF gets fired with 7 wins next year.
7 wins with 19 returning starters and our schedule equals bye bye
Would take a culture implosion and home losses to UVA, PSU, and Liberty probably.
I think if we only have 7 wins next season the seat gets real hot and Fuente is given an ultimatum for the 2021 season. Too many things pointing to a downward trend at that point.
I know sometimes i even scoff at the idea that one game can change the direction of our recruiting, but this Penn State game is huge for us. I'm sure we'll make it our biggest recruiting weekend of the year and to get some of these big time 2021 kids in there for that atmosphere is something we have to take advantage of. A perfect weekend for us could set up for a hell of a recruiting class.
Thanks, I just learned how to embed tweets less than 6 months ago...no clue how to embed these!
On 247, To the top left of the picture of the recruit you will see < / >. click that. Copy link. Paste directly
Any news on Brandon Campbell? Zohn's gone, so that should help, right....
Not that they mean anything, but all 4 247 CBs have him coming to us
True, but all 4 were before he visited us...
Good write up about him on his 247 profile:
Evaluation
Typical running back build with above average bulk relative to average height. Not the frame of a big back but enough space to get to 200-plus with relative ease. Athletic playmaker with impressive verified speed and agility (4.58 40, 4.07 shuttle). Shows good burst when he decides to plant and go. Limited pass-catching opportunities out of the backfield have been encouraging, particularly downfield. Shows enough close-quarters wiggle to make a defender miss. A bit hesitant at times. Can become a more decisive runner and set up blocks better. Bona fide Power 5-caliber running back prospect among the best in Texas in a strong cycle at the position.
Athletic Background
Spring 2019: Had the second-highest SPARQ score (126.33) in the country for the class of 2021
Patience
Not sure what we need patience for but I think it is probably a good thing
Rutgers RB who entered the portal.
I don't really follow our recruiting, but don't we have more running backs than engineering students at this point?
I guess it'll sort itself out when half the RBs switch over to Econ.
I would guess that this opens up another scholarship, but I'm not sure
Damn
Wouldn't be surprised if he followed Wiles to NC State. Will be rooting for both regardless of where they land.
Since he did not play this year, is he immediately eligible? Or since he was still at VT, would he have to sit?
I'm 90% sure he's graduated
he has to get a waiver to have any eligibility at all.
His freshman year was 2015, and he red shirted. 2019 was his r-SR season. He's out of eligibility (5-year clock) regardless of whether he played a snap last season.
Gotcha, I assume he'll be able to get one for medical reasons
Won't he need to sit out an extra year for a transfer within the ACC? Or because he wasn't on the roster last year that counts as his extra year?
Does that ACC rule still count if you graduated? Not sure if he has, but it's another thing that would be in play if he gets the medical hardship waiver.
It does not. See: Trevon Hill.
Visiting FSU.
I like the moves in the RB room. It says we are getting a new room for the weakest overall position group on offense. People gripe about production and now griping about getting new players to be more productive.
The big picture here is that many of the current RB's won't be on the roster next year. King and Gary are in a good spot, but I don't think anyone else will be there. I expect more retirements, transfers etc. Maybe Holston will be back if he is healthy (hope he is healthy)
If ONLY those 3 come back we will still have about 8. Don't get it
7-8 would be pretty solid from a roster management numbers standpoint assuming your scholarships are spread out year-wise (part of what you are seeing with Helpert and Blackshear which helps future recruiting pitches). Blackshear is more of a slot/utility player than a true RB.
Hamilton is just going to own this pinky business and make it a thing, isn't he?
I think he's just pointing it out
JoJo's people reached out to JHam
to get his digits
Some DL prospects to keep an eye on for 2021 (link). All were followed by Teerlinck soon after his hiring was made official.
Super creepy that this is an article but I guess this is the world we live in.
follow the follows if you wanna follow recruiting. Evan Watkins did it because it's his job to be on top of these things i guess
DD recently tweeted out an offer from Auburn. Surprised he didn't already have one.
Add Miami to that list.
Saw where Brandon Campbell made a tweet on Twitter talking about how Earl Campbell is his grandpa 😧. Talk about good bloodlines, we need to get this guy early before he ends up somewhere big time
...like baylor?
/ssssssssss
Wait is he really Earl Campbell's grandson? I hadn't heard that
What's the word out there lately with everything going on. We still good?
Better than you know. Probably will hit the rumor mill soon, but something big could be happening this weekend
*Edit: just looked over on 247 and those guys picked it up before I got wind of it. Very big time if it works out for VT
Behind the paywall?
Roche would be a true game changer next year. DE is where we sorely need difference makers but nobody outside rnadom flashes from Garbutt has given us that. Hopefully this will be a repeat of the Feaster situation except a flipped result, in that he will pick us bc of the NFL coaching/playing experience we bring to the table with Teerlinck/Tapp.
quincy pls
Temple Grad Transfer Quincy Roche Set To Visit This Weekend
I know we have plenty of RB's but give me Zach Evans, Lamareon James , and Roche and I would be PUMPED
Lol where did this Zach Evans talk come from? He couldn't have less interest in VT and I think we probably reciprocate that
Whether he has interest in us I have no idea, but if we're not interested in him that's absurd and just shows me that we will continue to stay average
Kid is a walking (i guess running) problem. Would want him within 100 miles of our program. We already picked up two solid starting level backs and could bring in 2 more with Campbell, Henderson, or Newton.
Have you seen his issues? I'm generally all about accumulating as much talent as possible, but he is almost guaranteed to be a locker room cancer.
What about Lamereon James he seems more of reasonable shot?
Saw on the twitters tonight that DJ Lundy is visiting this weekend. Hopefully he is just the tip of the iceberg.
Love Lundy at Mike but that's not who I'm referring to. I'm sure it will hit twitter today. Was actually in the works earlier in the week but obviously hit the brakes with all of the baylor stuff
