Marshawn Williams Beastly Playoff Highlights

It seems like Virginia Tech will get some legit and welcomed depth at tailback this spring.

Through the regular season, Phoebus workhorse Marshawn Williams averaged nearly 23 rushing attempts a game. So if anyone should benefit from some time off, it was him.

With two full weeks to rest and rejuvenate, Williams rushed for 197 yards and five touchdowns as the top-seeded Phantoms rolled over No. 16 Caroline 56-7 in Friday night's Group 4A South opener at Darling Stadium. Two of his scores covered 54 and 50 yards, both of which were SportsCenter worthy.

Williams had 147 yards on 12 attempts at halftime. On the third play of the third quarter, he broke at least four tackles before finishing off a 50-yard run that looked more like Marshawn Lynch.

His highlights are here: http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2578882/highlights/101561692.

His balance, shiftiness, and power are quite impressive.

His last name is Williams. He's naturally going to be a great Hokie Running Back.

To be frank, the kid's a BEAST of an athlete. I'm excited to see what he can do against much better teams later in the playoffs (hoping he gets that opportunity). Doing this vs the #16 seed in 4A doesn't buy me right away though. I looked at the 4A playoff pairings and even God awful Glen Allen high school (4-6 this year) is a #12 seed.

Do not be fooled by that opponent.

I don't know how much you follow Peninsula District football, but Marshawn Williams has destroyed almost literally EVERYBODY this season.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Yeah I understand that. I just really want to see him on the big stage against Salem, Dinwiddie and/or Lake Taylor. Just to prove he can do it against the BEST 4A teams (for consistency sake, I guess is what I'm looking for). I dig the kid and really hope he's the real deal.

I'm trying to see his stats from when he played for Hampton as a junior. Unfortunately, my Google skills are lacking tonight.

He had 20 rushes for 82 yards and a touchdown in their season opener against Dematha (#18 in the nation as selected by a MaxPreps computer, fwiw). That was also his first game as a Phantom.

DeMatha? That's good enough for me.

I saw Phoebus played Dematha and lost but I didn't know his stat-line. Those are the kind of games I'd pay attention to stat-wise though. To play devil's advocate though, if he's there star homerun hitter or playmaker, why only give him 20 carries if his avg yd per run is at 4.1? It could be a coaching/play-calling issue, which is way outside the realm of this topic but just something that big-game stat-line made me think of.

Well... Phoebus was playing from behind most of the game. And Williams was still a good part of their offense. One guy ripped off a 38 yard run his only touch, and other than that Williams had 82 of 147 yards. He had 20 of their 32 carries, of which 11 were from QB's.

I have nothing but the stat sheet (available at the bottom of THIS ARTICLE), so I have no idea how anything looked with the eye test. It sounds like Phoebus was trailing and therefore called more passing plays than they wanted, most of which ended up breaking down into scramble drills. Which, considering that the vast majority of my high school football watching experience consisted of the Tyrod Taylor show at Hampton, doesn't sound too far off. Except for the trailing part.

Ah yeah, that's better context of the game situation. I think I was trying to be too much like ESPN and just look at a stat-line without knowing anything about the actual game and determining quality of a team and its players. A turkey leg for your link and good points!

EDIT: And watching the "Tyrod Taylor Show" must have been even more awesome (if that's possible) at the high school level.

You have no idea. It was equally ridiculous at the Virginia high school all-star game he played in. It was pretty much 757 vs. NoVA, and for the first half he lit up the other team with PJ Hicks, his favorite target from Hampton.

Not to mention the fact that he was a pretty good safety and awesome punt returner during high school as well.

That sounds awesome. I got to grow up watching Macho Harris play high school ball when I was in middle school and man that guy was fast. He was a returner, DB and RB. Basically my high school would just pitch him the ball to the outside on sweep plays on offense and he just had gears that other players could only dream of. A lot of long TD runs in that offense.

Your post left me feeling nostalgic. As a Maury alum, I can't help but remember Tyrod in high school without thinking of the game in the playoffs. 757 football definitely had some athletes during that time, which makes it crazy that Tyrod was a 5 star when most were barely 2 stars.

http://articles.dailypress.com/2006-11-22/sports/0611220086_1_phoebus-ke...

The play that beat Tyrod was very similar to Tyrod to Coale against Nebraska. Our best receiver was WIDE open and caught the ball falling into the endzone with 2.4 seconds. Game was crazy and Tyrod was the biggest reason the game was even close.

... And then you had to go and remind me of one of my worst sports memories from high school :P

Impressive film! I really like the fact that he wears #42 and isn't caught up in being cool. It's something small but it says a lot about him in my opinion.

For those that don't know, in high school and college it's "cool" to have the lowest number possible. Consequently, the single digits and teens are usually worn by the stars or the cool kids (in most cases, being a star and one of the popular ones go hand in hand.. There's actually "cool standards" in regards to what facemask one wears too but I won't get into that now). I'm sure Marshawn could get any number he wants, he chose good ol ugly 42. Says to me, "I'm not worried about the shine, I just want to pound the rock."

Or perhaps he is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

"Exit light..."

As of this moment, he is now Marshawn "Then Answer" Williams.

That's brilliant. Leg for you sir and thanks for all the fish.

And the Award for Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Overanalyzing When Caught Up in the Positive Spirit of Recruiting Success goes to......

Haha good one. I'm dead serious though. There's like unwritten rules in the world of football and there's politics at play in the locker rooms (the incognito thing is really bringing some of the negative politics to light). Jersey numbers are kind of like a status thing (mainly with the black players).

He also just transferred into Phoebus this year so maybe all the other "stars" already claimed the cool numbers, don't know what number he wore the previous years at Hampton. Or maybe the coach just assigns them their numbers and tells them to deal with it...definitely reading too much into it.

I think that Phoebus is just different from most schools in that respect. Elan Lewis wore #38, even after his Junior year when he broke all sorts of records, and was named first-team all-state.

Pretty freaking impressive balance and shiftyness.

Joe, took it, and now Joe owns it. I was so confused when I first saw it though, thought someone kidnapped Joe and changed his avatar.

Looks hefty. Runs mean. I like it. ALOT. Trey Edmunds and this kid are going to be a bruising tandem.

Now how the heck do we get Joel Caleb involved?

"How you doin', Randy?"

Could he be converted into a Fuller? We need another Fuller for next year...

I saw him go down.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

And he's coming to VT.
And much became right again in the world.

The talent that come out of Hampton freaking Virginia...

This might be a really dumb question, but given that Marshawn Williams' height is 5'11", will that be a hindrance to him hitting the hole, or is it more an advantage since he can hide behind a mountain of men forming a hole in the defensive wall?

Edit: Odd. I know I added that I searched through a database and found that Ryan Williams was 5'10". So...it won't be a hindrance at all. :)

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Edit: my previous comment no longer made sense following your edit

Also, his distant cousin Marshawn Lynch is 5'11".

I wouldn't be worried at all.

I'd like to see holes like that for him to run through at VT. Not saying he's not awesome- some of those runs were beastly- but the holes, man...they were huuuge.

"He shot out of there like the 5th pea in a 4 pea pod"

The kid is good without a doubt I'm surprised Mike Farrell hasn't given him a 4th star by now with the numbers he's putting up. But when he gets here what does that do to our depth? Because if he gets here and balls out like that here there's no chance he can be benched. Which makes me believe we won't be getting McKenzie.

I dont really peg McKenzie as being someone that is concerned that there isnt room for him. But what do I know.

I refuse to make the meme, but something along the lines of "one does not simply commit to Virginia Tech THEN get a ratings bump from Rivals" would accurately describe this situation.

I'm bored at work and this is more accurate.

this video makes me laugh every time that fat guy rolls off. Hilarious.

he carries defenders on his back. Or his passenger seat.

In my opinion, the fat guy didn't roll off. He bailed rather than try to be a hero. The other guy knew what to do and did it. Want him on our team.

Does anyone know if he's as lethal catching passes out of the backfield as he is running over people?

I'm not immune to recruiting hype or hyperbole, so I'll give my two cents about this kid: He reminds me of Steven Jackson. In other words - get the ball, go forward, shake your dreads, power through arm tackles. Rinse, repeat.
