Not really sure which broadcast I want to watch tbh, I'm most likely only sparingly watching while playing my ps4, but Skycast and All-22 seem pretty neat, as well as the command center (for stats). Definitely not the Refcast....

This is awesome. Imagine VT in this game, hope to get to this stage sometime soon!

Glad ESPN is doing the actual coaches film room after just having a couple of guys playing with the telestrator during the first two games.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

GO TIGERS!!!

Hooray for purple!

These are two great QBs going at it. Hopefully this is a close game. They've both already made great plays (even if Burrow's didn't count.

I wish we were playing at the level of either of these schools. It must be nice.

Why is that block illegal? I hate these stupid rules they're putting into the game

Because it can injury the kid. You can still block the defender from tackling without laying him out. Just run or even just stand in front of him.

There's nothing wrong with laying dudes out. Head on a swivel. I understand why the rules are in place, but I honestly really hate the newer rules. I really miss all the big hits that were in football. Now it seems like you hit a guy hard it's going to by default be a flag until the stripes get together and talk.

Although that's not even a blip as compared to my hatred for the targeting rule. Not because of what it's trying to do, but because of how targeting is applied.

when average player sizes are going up, average force of impact from 'big hits' are going up too. throw in the widespread knowledge about CTE combined with the basic desire to see players on the field and not on the trainer table... you get more protective rules

speaking of targeting.. correctly applied in this game, and also incorrectly non-called on LSU hit on Lawrence a play or two prior to his Q4 fumble.

Ahem...PAC-12 refs, if you lived out here you'd understand

It was completely the right call, you can't decleat block back towards the LOS anymore.

Can you watch the coaches room on break via mobile. I would love to hear what they were just talking about.

What's
Important
Now

LSU's offense has joined the chat.

That kick was not pretty looking, but it got the job done

I'm beginning to think that Clemson might be a good team

Clemson goes 96 yds in 4 plays in 1:30.

We take knees at the 50 and go into the half w 2 timeouts left.

"It's always great to beat UVA, that makes us all smarter and better looking for a couple days".

Staff could still be gunshy from our attempt to score before the half against UVA in 2018.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Has Baylor hired someone yet? I wonder if they make a hard push for Venables? Or try to interview tony elliott

This game is fun as hell. That is all.

If you play it, they will win.

8 for Clemson is getting beat like a dog.

Halftime after 10pm is ridiculous. Not only for those of us that have to be at work early, but no kids will be able to watch the end of the game. Damn west coast bias!

Yea I'm not going to see the end of this game... 5am comes quickly.

I'm going to bed but if Clemson wants to have any chance Lawrence has to settle in and stop over throwing everyone and 8 on defense needs help over the top vs 1.

Clemson looks beat though.

So.... 2nd half kickoff at 11?

Close to it. This game may not end until close to 1am. Let's hope it doesn't go to overtime.

Seriously who thinks kicking this game at almost 8:30 on a Monday night is a good idea? College football is a Saturday thing. Make it on Saturday.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Hell play Friday so it's not against NFL, just not Monday.

Even a Thursday would be a million times better. College football at least has some roots on Thursday.

Monday Night Football = event

NCAA also learned from March Madness that Mondays get good ratings for championship games.

But I agree, they should play this on Saturday night, or Friday night, and the Super Bowl should also get moved to Saturday to have a recuperation Sunday.

I think that targeting is the death knell for Clemson. I hate that rule

I really don't like that targeting call call me an old fart but the guy gets him in the legs and skalski has to clean up he goes low enough for me

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

It's a stupid call/rule. The rule shouldn't be targeting if you're gonna call that "targeting."

They need to just call it spearing if that's gonna be called, and they need to start calling it on running backs who tuck their head when running the football...

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I think they could have a flagarant rule where if it's obviously intentional and blatant an ejection is warranted but some targeting calls are big game changers that are borderline. That said the refs would fuck it up still so I can understand all targeting is ejection to avoid the issue

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

At the very least I think it shouldn't be auto-ejection. The NFL has a better rule for it.

However, it was sweet, sweet Karma after I heard Clemson fans talk about the same shit the other direction in the Ohio State game when TL ducked and created the helmet to helmet himself.

all the defenders have to do in these situations is hit the runner with their own facemask instead of ducking their their heads and leading with the crown of their helmets

I'm personally enjoying watching Clemson be humbled by the Burreaux show.

Enjoyed watching the first 3 quarters but I gotta hit the sack now so I stand a chance of getting up at 5 to work out.

Why the hell is kickoff for this game so late?!?!

Go LSU

I don't know about you guys, but I want an iphone 11 so I can do some slowfies

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

We're all gonna look like we're in a slowfie in the AM.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

That's ball game Clemson look outmatched in all phases now which says alot Clemson are damn good but LSU is insane

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

I think LSU just clinched it with that last TD. Clemson down 17 with 12 minutes left in the 4th? I think that is too much for them to claw back (hehe).

Ole Dabo's golly shucks happy go lucky schtick goes away real quick when he's losing. Lol I love it.

ESPN needs to reevaluate the math on viewers lost to going to bed on the east coast vs. viewers lost from not being home yet on the west coast.

Game's decided and I'm out. This thing won't be over until close to 1.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

It's been over for a while.

Well at least now we won't have to listen to how this is so good for VT and the ACC all off-season

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

So...who had Coach Eaux winning a National Championship after he got hired?

Hearing Coach O speak is a million times better than another praise Jesus underdog bs from Dabo.

Every word of utter bs from Dabo's mouth is a calculated sales pitch. Like his never ending speech last year and all the players rehearsed recruiting pitches like the Suge Knight reference. So refreshing to hear a guy that genuinely just loves his team and his state be brief concise and to the point.

LSu 7-0 against top ten ranked opponents. That's a compelling National Championship record. Played the SEC gauntlet plus Texas, and won the Natty Playoff. That's a no doubter. Clemson 1-1 against ranked teams

Over 600 yards against this Clemson D...not even Vick managed that. Fully deserved national champions.

I was in no way pulling for Klemp$on, but that offensive pass interference call to nullify the TD was pure horse manure. Not sure it would have made much of a difference, LSU really wanted this game more, but sad to see the refs screw up a huge call that badly.

He grabbed and threw him out of the way... It's about damn time the DB and WR had to play by the same rules in today's game.

The DB grabbed him first, and grabbed him again during the WR's "grab" aka "get off of me" motion. It's a non-call or a call on the defender.

Idk who is downvoting, it's not me, but no way. The contact before the grab and throw was basic both guys hand fighting. Higgins went next level by grabbing the jersey and yanking him out of the way. That's textbook OPI and it still rarely gets called. I'm glad they had the balls to call it. The Clemson WR's back shoulder game has long been filled with push offs, but the offense gets the benefit of the doubt more often than not.

what about the non-call on the long TD by LSU in the 2nd, where the WR basically shoved the Clemson defender away creating a few yards of seperation? Another non-call that favored LSU

See my post below outlining what happened. You don't get penalized for slapping a DB off your shoulder (that they are grabbing). There's a big difference between shoving a DB completely out of your way, which usually requires you to slow down, and slapping away a defender's arm who is constantly grabbing your arm/shoulder. Nobody complained about that on the field, not even Terrell, he knows what he is doing.

No way man, check the replay. The receiver and the defender had their hands on each other, then the receiver drops his hands to make a play for the ball. No push at all, did not extend either arm into the defender. In fact, the defender continued to hold onto the receiver while the ball was in the air, and only let go because he couldn't stop his momentum and subsequently lost his balance. It was a horrible call that completely changed the momentum of the game and would have pulled Clemson to within one score. Andy Nesbit at USA Today has a write up that pretty much sums it up, which I just read after posting my opinion.

Edit: Upvotes for Chris and Orion cuz dv's are stupid

I promise if you watch a replay you'll see Higgins grip the jersey, and yank the jersey away from his body. It's not even a question as to whether her gripped and pulled him away from him.

I'll take a closer look, failed to see that contact in the angle I had for a replay.

Edit: okay, I see the contact with the receiver's left hand pulling the jersey on the defender's right shoulder. I agree that it was a flagable offense, but still think it should have been a non-call. Simply because the defender was guilty of the same offense but lost his balance and therefore fell out of the play. Still think LSU was destined to win though, and happy to see Clemson shut their bragging mouths.

I think Chase pushed off to get about 3 yards of separation to make the catch on the first LSU TD down the sideline, thought it could have been Offensive pass interference.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

That's because the basic TV angle only catches up to the moment where you see Chase create separation... but when you see the angle tracking them down the field you realize Terrell is grabbing, slapping the entire way...

You'll notice AJ Terrell didn't protest it at all. He knows better, his game is all about getting away with as much as possible. His go-to press cover move at the line is an automatic first down in the NFL every time (he smacks the WR in the facemask at the snap).

I disagree with this user's assessment of this play. That inside hand jam is a great move IF you hit the receiver on the inside shoulder, but in this case he clearly makes solid contact with Chase's facemask and could have easily been called for a penalty. This is just how Terrell (and most Clemson corners under Venables) plays. I've been watching it for years.

I actually don't have an issue with how handsy he can be, I'm pro-DB in just about any case, but Chase's moves to create separation are not the traditional "push off" that most people think of. It's a different play but here is a legal move Chase uses against Terrell later (similar to the play you are talking about)

Terrell plays like this on every vertical route, but it can backfire on you. Chase creates a step of separation by merely slapping Terrell's arm off his shoulder (which Terrell is gripping). This is basically what happened on the play you are talking about as well (I can't find an alternate angle of the first TD yet, but I can revisit this later when film gets posted). All that contact on the arm/shoulder can throw off the receiver, but it can backfire and cost the DB a step as well when he finds himself off balance as a result.

EDIT: ESPN posted the alternate angle that I remembered watching from the game in this highlight video. It should be embedded to the view in question. It's exactly as I remembered, Terrell constantly grabbing at Chase's shoulder before getting his arm slapped away, Terrell was thrown slightly off balance. Not even close to OPI.

The last clip is the angle I was referring to. Hard to tell if it is just chase slapping away the hand on the shoulder or "forearm pull" as you mentioned or if he pushes off the shoulder as I thought originally. Either way they were letting the DBs and the receivers get handsy all night and I thought it was officiated well. This is football after all and the hand checking and slapping should be allowed by both the WR and the DB as long as neither is grabbing a hold of the other.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

P12 refs strike again..

LSU runner out of bounds - not called, not reviewed
LSU defender commits PI, gives up TD, called offensive PI
LSU defender targets Lawrence later in the 4th quarter - helmet to helmet hit, while leading with the crown of the helmet (a play or two before his fumble) - no call

LSU gets interception. Phantom PI called on LSU

all maroon everything

Idk where he is getting this refs only helped LSU narrative... I don't think Clemson had a single scoring drive that wasn't aided by at least one 15 yard penalty.

Final Numbers:

Clemson 7 penalties for 65 yards.

LSU 11 penalties for 118 yards.

LSU was committing penalties far more often than they were called. They should/could have been called for another half dozen, at least. They were clearly playing physical on purpose and were willing to accept the consequences of drawing the flags. It's a gamble, and they actually had to execute well along with taking the extra advantages, but you gotta figure the refs will get tired of throwing their flags every snap.

Clemson got away with a few as well, but if the game was called according to the rules, LSU's penalty yardage deficit would have been far larger.

You literally described Clemson's strategy in pass coverage for years... They commit so many holds/grabs/and PI's that they basically dare the refs to call it every time knowing that they won't. It's not a new concept, and the best pass defenses in the NFL every year usually lead the league in PI/holds as well. The Legion of Boom in particular was known for committing a ton of coverage penalties.

That was also LSU's strategy in the secondary...

bottom line LSU was better in this game - at passing, at catching, at rushing, at defense, and at cheating

and at cheating

Really?

Clemson got spanked by a better team. It weren't the refs.

#FireDabo

Jimmy: "What the hell was that? The team wasn't ready to play. That's on the coaching. Unacceptable! Gotta #FireDabo."

Mike: "That was the championship game."

Jimmy: "Did we win? No. #FireDabo."

Mike: "We won last year."

Jimmy: "Last year was last year. What about this year? #FireDabo."

Mike: "We won 29 games in a row."

Jimmy: "Didn't get to thirty. #FireDabo."

Mike: "We won two of the last four championships and played in four of the last five."

Jimmy: "2 & 3 in my book. Not getting it done. We need a coach who can win consistently, not just get us there. What a waste of a season. If your expectations are to just get to the championship game every year, that's why we're not winning anymore. We need better fans. And a better coaching staff. #FireDabo."

Mike: "Who can we get that's better?"

Jimmy: "Someone who can recruit better. #FireDabo."

Mike: "Where's the money coming from to buy out the contracts and hire the new staff?"

Jimmy: "This isn't gonna get better. We're just throwing our money away on this crap. #FireDabo."

Mike: "Good points. You're kind of convincing me. I guess you're right. #FireDabo."

To be fair, the statement 'This isn't going to get better' is probably true.

Clemson?

More like Clemchump.

The blowjob coming from Pat Forde toward Trevor Lawrence is nauseating. Instead of talking about Coach O gutsy offseason decision to change the offensive philosophy, he want to give a blowie to Clemchump.

Android phones have had slow motion for awhile.

The Fansville season finale was disappointing. I wanted to see the Larry Culpeper, that's what we were waiting for, why couldn't you give us what the fans want!

Clemson Clemsoned again. It's been a long time since we've seen a Clemsoning, but it's back.

I don't know if they Clemsoned, they just got beat by a better team. Burrow is the real deal, and the LSU WRs are insane.

Definitely not Clemsoning.

Last night showed me that if Clemson couldn't stay close to LSU in a game this big, no one could have.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I think AJ Terrell's draft stock just dropped a round.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

I have a question about the ads: Why did VT go away from the "invent the future" tagline when the LSU commercial ends with "Fierce for the Future"
I heard that VT thought universities were going away from taglines and that's why they got rid of it.

Hokie Club member since 2017

Why wasn't the hit on the Clemson WR a penalty for hitting a defenseless receiver when he clearly did not have the ball?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I was waiting for them to eject that player. Still waiting. If that WR wasn't defenseless, they need to revise the definition.
