Having already seen their team don the unique "Hokie Stone" helmets, Virginia Tech fans are petitioning that the school create another special helmet in honor of one of the university's most popular cult traditions.

Over the past year, "Horse on a treadmill" has gained significant popularity on campus thanks to the school's "Invent the Future" commercial that features Virginia Tech scientists monitoring a horse running on a treadmill.

The petition, started by Sam Rubenking, is quite simple: Put "Horse on Treadmill" on the Hokies' helmet for the team's season finale against Virginia on No. 30. As of Monday afternoon, the petition has over 500 signatures, and some of the reasons for signing the signature are quite hilarious.

"I came to Tech after seeing the horse in a commercial"

"Without that horse, I wouldn't even know how to horse."

"IT MEANS SO MUCH BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE HAS A HORSE ON A TREADMILL"

"Horse on treadmill is a part of VT history and tradition."

Will the university allow the football team to wear helmets adorned with "Horse on a treadmill?" Probably not, but a guy can dream, can't he?

I might be the lone one here but....I don't want these on our helmets...

@AMB4VT

You are not alone.

@VTimHokie85

I don't even think we should wear helmets.

I logged in to up vote this one. Sum tuff sunbeaches, we are.

This has a similar feel as when Ole Miss decided to change their Old South mascot Colonel Reb and Admiral Ackbar gained a lot of steam amongst the student body.

Regardless, this would be an embarrassment, plain and simple.

Next thing you know, we're going to see a petition for paper airplanes on a helmet.

Never.

Ackbar would make a better DC than mascot, he knows how to recognize a trap.

It's great as an inside joke and a great video for the stadium, but literally no one outside of VT will understand it or think it's funny. It's also a poor time to try to feature horses on helmets, since the UVA mascot, you know, rides out on a horse. Imagine the punchlines...

"Exit light..."

And he never makes it anywhere because he's too stupid to realize the horse is on a treadmill.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I love the horse on a treadmill....I just don't think it would look good as a helmet is all. And I
believe most people wouldn't understand. I think just seeing it on the video board at the games
would be awesome enough.

@AMB4VT

They're not going to do it.
There's not enough time and no money in the budget for a new helmet in the next 10 days.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

:(

Oh horse I mean no offense. You know I love ya ;)

This is absurd. We don't need more helmets.

Maybe a commemorative patch on the jersey? Dozer, can you mock up some for the Athletic Department.

At times this year it seems like our football program has been a horse on a treadmill...

i cant help but think tkp has a least a little bit to do with hoat's popularity.

I like to think so

This just serves as further evidence that the Horse on a Treadmill certainly has a colt following ...

Inside jokes are only cool to people on the inside.

Here's a good rule for helmet logos -

If it's going to take the ESPNU commentator more than 14 seconds to explain the logo, it's probably a bad idea.

Leonard. Duh.

They won't need to explain it, we'll just show Discover 2010 every commercial break

Just VT please..
