...unless Brady signs with the chargers on a max free agent contract

Brady is staying put. Kraft will see to that... he's also not going to play in an empty chargers stadium.

Brady will be a Raider this upcoming season.

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

He would get shanked for the tuck rule. I could see us signing one of the veterans though until Justin Herbert is ready to take the field in 2021...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

KCCO

aint no max contracts in the nfl

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

The only free agent market for Brady is in NE. No other team is going to give a 43 year old declining QB a huge contract. Brady- at 43- without the package of the greatest coach of all time and systematic cheating is nothing special. the only big deal he could possibly get is in NE.

Good points...but Dan Snyder says hello

Interesting that Rivers moved to Florida. He made it clear he'd move to be closer to his parents when he retired but I assumed he'd be closer than Florida. But I guess it depends on where in Florida he moved to.

You say that but you just know they'll end up drafting Herbert and he'll be the starter by week 3 at the latest

Yeah that's officially Mel Kipers pick in mock draft 1.0... hopefully Tyrod can beat him out all season.

I always think about how Tyrod turned down more money with the Broncos to play for the Bills:
That season Peyton was struggling and Osweiler came in for a few games. Had it been Tyrod, he could have lit it up in the Kubiak offense. Not to mention a defense that carried a 50% Manning to a Super Bowl victory.
Tyrod could have taken the starting role and never given it back. Thus becoming a super bowl champion....
Sigh, it's all so perfect in my head.
Hope he wins the starting job on the Chargers and tears it up.

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

But Tyrod is a Super Bowl Champion. Won while on the Ravens squad

Yup and here's the hardware:

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

Philip Rivers is sixth all-time in yards and touchdowns.... impressive!

Which is basically like saying he's fifth of this generation.

Griese and Fouts are in the hall of fame. That makes Rivers a lock in my book.

Griese is a two-time Super Bowl champion, an NFL MVP, and a two-time first team All Pro.
Fouts was in only two AFC championship games, but was also an NFL MVP and three-time first team All Pro.
Rivers was never an MVP, never an All-Pro, and has only been to one AFC championship.

I don't think Rivers is near as much a lock as you think.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Now do warren moon

Fine. Warren Moon was a nine year Pro Bowler, a first-team All Pro, an NFL MVP, and had a sixteen-year career after six years in the CFL.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Yeah. He might help a new QB transition if he's lucky, but I highly doubt he starts a full season ever again, unless a starter goes down.

From a business perspective, the Chargers cannot trot out Tyrod as the starter next year and expect to sell any season tickets in their new stadium. I expect them to do something splashy to drum up local interest.

or...realize you have a decent QB and invest some money in other positions and win some games?

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I hope you're right, however, they went 12-4 in 2018 and their soccer stadium was all away fans.

Hope I'm wrong, but I suspect this is just the Chargers throwing this out there to make it sound like they have options.

Pro football is a business.

LA is a doomsday clock for NFL teams. Doesn't matter who they have under center.

Tyrod has had the absolute worst luck and I will believe it when I see it. If anyone deserves a fair shot, it's Tyrod. And we all know he can do it.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

No doubt. He's been in horrible situations, and in spite of that, he still registered extremely well on most QB analytics while starting in Buffalo. Even though he had some of the weakest WR corps I have ever seen in the NFL.

Even if Tyrod never becomes a first team QB in the NFL again, he's still had a pretty darn good career. He's made a ton of money, is financially set for life and probably doesn't have to worry about the effects of concussions later on in life. He'll never be in the NFL Hall of Fame, but still, he'll always be a VT legend. I'm really happy for him.

That's a good perspective. It makes me feel much better for him.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

Solid perspective. I have just always hopped he'd have one of those solid years in a contract year that got him paid silly money.

Per overthecap.com, Tyrod's made over $50m so far in his career and signed a 2 year deal with the Chargers last year for $11m with $6m guaranteed. While maybe not Brady or Brees silly money, he won't be going hungry any time soon.

I hope he has been smart about investing for his and his families future. Taxes take a big bite of those numbers as well.

Absolutely - people talk about the money they make a lot, but I've seen articles like this before where a lot of pros go bankrupt.

Similar to how you were seeing some 80's bands playing kids parties - they spend money like they expect it to always be around. So yeah, really hoping Tyrod has banked/invested a good chunk of it!

The smart ones follow the same rules as the rest of us: don't live to the edge of your means. Manage risk. Don't put yourself in a position where the only thing you have left to rely on is sheer luck.

From personal experience, I will add: don't get married to a spouse who spends all of your money, then cheats on you, leaves, gets re-married, and then moves out of state to let you raise the kids alone.

Actually, the last three parts of the above were a blessing. I'm broke, but much happier now.

It not necessarily living to the edge of your means.....imo, its realizing that in 6-10yrs your income will drastically drop off...once you get used to a Ferrari lifestyle its hard to drop back to a Honda lifestyle

That's exactly what it is, we've just stated the same thing differently.

Well maybe if Honda would step up their game.

I'm not crying for him!

Awesome.

That's awesome! Sounds like he's found something to be successful at post-ball. Although it's not a hall-of-fame career, it was a good one. I think he'd be a great "brand ambassador" for Tech.

Ummm, let's see. Taxes on 50 million dollars. Now that's a problem pretty much the overwhelming majority of the population of the entire world would love to have. While we'll always have the profligate big money losers in sports, lottery and gambling winners, entertainment, etc., I would assume that in this day and time, with all the horror stories of previous generations and broke icons, the pros these days have access to solid financial advice, and if they can't live on 50 mil, taxes or no, well, that's on them. I give Tyrod a lot more credit than that.
But, if it was only money that drove guys like Tyrod, they wouldn't be earning that much money to begin with.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Exactly, the issue with athletes isnt the taxes, it's the fact that tomorrow your pay check could just vanish, but Tyrod has been around enough for the pension too, so aslong as he hasnt gone in debt he should have a comfortable income each year.

One of my favorite 'jokes' is that backup NFL quarterback is the best career in America.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

NFL kicker has to take the cake you can play well into the 40's and you dont even have to participate in any real contact practices and have you ever watched a kicker in workouts?

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Yeah but kickers arent paid 15mil a year.

to be fair, backup QBs are not paid 15 mil a year either

Mike Glennon?

I'm a Bears fan. I remember that contract all too well.

Not the Glennon you expect in a Tyrod thread, but I'll allow it.

No, they're not usually paid like that, but the fringe benefits are hard to deny. My favorite example is Don Strock. Dude had leisure time a-plenty, a permanent tan and a great golf game to go with the task of holding a clipboard. Add to that the reduced incidents of injury and undue wear and tear on the body, and old Don comes out looking pretty good in my eyes regardless of his remuneration.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

It's definitely close. Kicker would be a great job, except for the huge amount of pressure that falls on kickers from time to time.

Nobody expects shit from an NFL backup quarterback.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, Daniel Tosh has got my back (old Brett Favre bit), you want me to hold a clip board, and pay me the league minimum? Yeah, sounds good, what if the starter gets injured? Oh, this isn't the Browns, or the Redskins? Yeah, where do I sign...

Cue Don Strock!

Tyrod is also very well vested in the NFL retirement plan by now, he has a lot of golf at fancy clubs to look forward to playing. And his children should be able to attend any university they choose debt free, with or without scholarships. That's a nice place to be standing.

The discussion sounds a little like how things were with Don Strock and his NFL career. Holding the clipboard while Bob Griese and then Dan Marino had HOF careers probably wasn't a bad life at all. He made decent money (nothing like today's dollars) and didn't take much of a pounding. And every once in a while, he would show the fans that he was a very capable backup.

Let's see him throw 140 more passes so he can get the record for interception %.

I'm in the 757 and won a "Meet Tyrod" contest in Newport News tomorrow so other than his investments I will ask him what he believes the starting situation to be. Also, bringing my white #5 Pro Combat jersey for him to sign and add to the mancave! Go Hokies.

Super cool guy. It was sponsored by Body Armor and they did a nice job of keeping this small so we could actually talk with him. I am waiting on the pictures to be emailed as they had a professional photographer. Didn't ask him about his investments obviously but based on how grounded he seemed, I imagine he has been wise with his money. His car was a 5 series Mercedes (4-door) that was all stock vs something ridiculous (Ferarri, Aston etc). He does know about D-Mobile from Texas and thinks this kid will be amazing and that he will stick with his VT commitment. He likes that Coach Lynn from Buffalo is his guy in LA and that the situation will benefit him regarding being The Guy at the Chargers. He had his best two years in Buffalo statistically with Coach Lynn. Not besties but sure did enjoy meeting him. OT.......he is always listed at 6'1 but had me by an inch at least and I am 6'1. Go Hokies!

How do I insert a picture on TKP?

Jeremiah 29:11 and Go Hokies!

One easy way is to upload a picture to imgur.

You should get several links to chose from for sharing. Choose the "Direct link". Copy that.

When you have a comment window open on TKP, select the picture icon above the comment box (first box, looks like a landscape photo).

Paste the image link in the pop-up box and hit enter. If the image link works, it should appear below the comment box (you'll have sort of a "preview" of what your comment will look like). If you see a little blank white box, it means your picture link doesn't work and you should try again.

If you see the picture, we should, too!

No surprise here given that Rivers moved across the country but

I'm kind of surprised he has not announced his retirement yet. I know he has said that he wants to continue playing but who is going to offer him anything but a backup role at this point? Tough to swallow your pride and move to that role after being a starter for all those years.

Getting paid to hold a clipboard and whine about it to your wife isn't that bad of a gig.

Count me in as one of the many Hokies that would love to see Tyrod get another starting gig before his career finishes up. But looking at the big picture, you have to respect the solid career he's carved out in the NFL despite never really becoming entrenched as the starter anywhere. He's been a great backup in multiple places, served as a bridge quarterback multiple times and now is living in freakin' L.A. I'd be willing to bet he's OK with that.

I'm especially proud that he stood up for what he wanted in being a nfl quarterback and resisting not shifting to a wide receiver role, even with the pressure to initially do so.

Rivers won't be returning to the chargers

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

After careful consideration and consultation with my wife, we have decided that, if offered, we would decline the position as #1 QB for the Chargers.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Stay tuned as the Chargers waste a draft pick on an unproven rookie QB and make him the starter somewhere in or before week 5 instead of going with a proven entity.

But that new QB smell is so intoxicating.

If you play it, they will win.

"I like our internal options," Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco said Tuesday on AM570 LA Sports, via Daniel Popper of TheAthletic.com.

PFT

Of course they do.

As they almost certainly peruse the free agent market or the draft market for a shiny toy QB with a sexier name to sell season tickets for their inaugural year in a new stadium.

TIL that Tyrod has $50M in career earnings since joining the NFL. Not bad for, largely, a back-up.

Yeah but once you factor in taxes it's barely even worth it.....

Could he be less non-committal than that?

Of course. He could say "we feel tyrod is capable but we will explore every option we feel makes our football team better"

Edit: thinking about someone being "less non-committal" is turning my brain into a pretzel after work today 🤦‍♂️

Unfortunately for Tyrod this increases the chances they're going to be drafting a QB at 6 which could put him in another situation like the Browns where the fans get impatient if things start to go south. Good news is the Chargers have a much better supporting cast so it should go much better. Their OL is trash though so I hope Tyrod can still run.

Also, good things the Chargers don't have fans to get impatient, plus Anthony Lynn loves himself some T-Mobile

30 y.o. I think he's still close to peak speed. When Vick had rested legs and came back for the eagles he was still lightning quick

Hokie Club member since 2017

Hopefully it's Tua which would give Tyrod around 6wks to put up some good film and maybe finish the season. Tyrod has to be a little more aggressive down the field than he showed in Cleveland. He has the weapons and the ability to put up good numbers if he trust his arm.
