According to 247Sports Ryan Bartow, South Carolina native and defensive lineman Michael Barnett committed to Virginia Tech. Barnett is rated as a 4-star prospect by, Rivals.com, ESPN, and 247Sports. He's Virginia Tech's second verbal commitment of the 2015 cycle. According to 247Sports, Barnett had offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina and Tennessee among other schools.
Barnett tweeted his intention to commit today early Saturday morning.
Announcing Commitment on Monday.— Michael Barnett (@JermaineJr77) November 23, 2013
Barnett visited Blacksburg many times over the past year, most recently November 16th when Virginia Tech hosted Maryland. This is what Barnett said 8 months ago about his offer.
"I was ecstatic about it," the 6-feet-4, 245-pound Barnett said. Barnett plans to visit the Hokies during his upcoming spring break. His recruitment at Virginia Tech is being handled by assistant Charley Wiles. "He's visited the school like three times," Barnett said.
Credit to Charley Wiles and the rest of the Hokies staff for landing a big time commitment this early in the process.

Barnett is an intriguing prospect. He is a physically imposing defensive end, pushing 250 pounds on a 6-4 frame. In high school, he plays exclusively at left defensive end. On film, his size is the first thing that grabs you. He looks physically mature with a big frame, even though photos of him without pads appear that he could comfortably add 20 pounds without losing any quickness.
Once the ball is snapped, several things about Barnett stood out on film. First of all, he is so much physically stronger than the players he is lined up against it is startling. Even when he takes on a block with poor technique, he maintains leverage and makes plays. He has a comfortable stance for a strong-side defensive end that allows him to explode off the ball without getting too far up field and losing gap responsibility. He also looks very comfortable in space, especially crashing on the dive on read option while keeping proper position to get out and support on the quarterback. With division teams like Duke, UVA, and, Georgia Tech all utilizing read option, an effective defensive end must be comfortable rushing the passer and reading the option in space.
Most impressively, he has a terrific motor. He tracks plays down from behind where you see a bunch of players quit. This is critical for a Bud Foster defense, as the defensive end must stand up to double teams at the point of attack yet be quick enough to crash hard and take away the cutback lane.
Barnett's size and motor also make him a possible candidate to play defensive tackle for Virginia Tech. He comfortably could play at 270 pounds or perhaps more. The effort and strength would allow him to be a playmaker at the position, something that Charlie Wiles has coveted over the last five seasons. If he moved to defensive tackle, he would need how to slant and then secure a gap fit. He certainly appears to be more comfortable defeating the blocker straight ahead.
I got the impression from watching Barnett on film is that he hasn't received much detailed coaching on leverage techniques at the defensive line. At the high school level, he defeats blockers with brute strength and effort, but you don't see him using violent rip or swim moves to gain leverage. He also has a tendency to turn and face pulling offensive linemen rather than forcing with his inside shoulder. If Barnett were to turn his pads like that against Boston College on a counter trey or against Clemson on a buck sweep, he would get rocked. Given his effort and power, I think Barnett will be a fast learner. He has a similar frame (maybe slightly bigger) as current Hokie Ken Ekanem, and certainly has similar upside to be a standout "stud" defensive end.
Welcome to HokieNation Michael!

Now this is a way to start out my Monday. Awesome news!
To pull a recruit like this out of SC with that offer sheet is impressive for this staff. Recruiting is definitely on the upswing. Sucks that we have to wait 2 years to see him play, but it's great to see us starting 2015 off with a bang. Welcome to the good guys Barnett!
Boom. Great get, and a great start to a great week.
Welcome to the Nation, Michael.
Welcome to Hokie Nation Michael! 2015 could be a scary good class.
awesome news.
It's only logical to commit to the Gobblers on Thanksgiving week!
#FEASTONHOOS
South Carolina is massively underrated for recruiting purposes, in my opinion.
^This^ However, I know Shane Beamer is fully knowledgeable of that state's talent pool. I imagine it's hard to pull guys away from USCe and Clemson though considering the upswing of both programs now.
Stiney is doing a very good job as Tech's Recruiting Coordinator. This is the most active I've ever seen the staff this late in the season, and for more than one recruiting class. Everybody is involved and pulling their recruiting weight.
I'm elated for the commit (a four-star in hand is better than two in the 757) but I'm interested to see the fallout from it. Virginia is once again stacked with defensive prospects. I wonder if guys like Tim Settle and Josh Sweat will take VT off their list or will be excited about playing with another boss d-line prospect.
Great news for a Monday! Now lets finish off strong with our VA recruits and show everybody that we Dominate the other State school. I dont have a Twitter but I hope hes getting some Hokie Love from us on Twiter to keep him with us through 2015. Im always a little nervous until they are actually wearing Orange and Maroon.
Boom baby! YEAHH BUDDY!
My only issue with this whole thing is the kid has not made it official. I have visited his Twitter page several times this morning and he has yet to make it official.
He can't make any officials until his senior year.
You misunderstood. I said he has not announced it on his Twitter page, "I'm committing to Virginia Tech" or something like it.
I think we are putting too much emphasis on twitter here.
Ah I see. Thanks for clarifying.
I like the commit, but I'll hold out the fist-pumps until a LOI is signed. Good to see that out of state recruits with SEC offers still see the benefit of working in Fosters system.
Now, can Loeffler start making the same strides...
If we can snag a few of the top VA players, this class will probably be our best ever. As with 2014, there are a TON of good players in-state for the 2015 cycle.
This kid looks like a star in the making. Lets hope he turns out better than Nick Acree.
Welcome to the family Michael!
You are joining a committed tradition that is supported by a fans that love hard-nosed, defensive football. Work hard and make us proud, and we will rock the stadium for you on game-days!
looks like his coach made it 'official'
It looks like his decision was at noon, and 247Sports reported it beforehand. Rivals.com held back on any stories until he made it official.
Phew! Now that it's been on twitter, it's truly reliable.
Welcome to the Hokie Nation
especially when it's someone tweeting that someone else confirmed it. sources.
Ok...NOW it's official. We can all relax now.
HE'S APART FROM US? OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I THOUGHT HE COMMITTED

/i'll -1 myself
GREAT PICK UP!!! Welcome to Hokie Nation Michael!!!
CBF: Now RIP THEIR F-KING NUTS OFF!
Maybe 2015 is our year. A lot of the 2014 VA prospects that went to other schools are just going to create a barrier for starting spots at those schools. This guy (even though he's out of state) really wants to play for Bud/Wiles and be a Hokie, plus he'll probably see the field sooner. I like him already!
