The Hokies play Miami at Cassell tonight at 9PM. The game is on Regional Sports Networks. I have not started these threads the last few days because I was at my annual golf retreat; 16 guys meet in Orlando and play golf from sun up to sun down for 5 days. We get tired but we have fun.
Miami is 13-12 and 5-10 in the ACC. They are 4-4 at home and 1-6 on the road in the ACC. Their wins are at Clemson and home to Pitt, VT, BC and Wake. Their losses are to #5 Louisville, #2 Duke, at #13 Louisville, at NC State, at #8 Duke, at UNC, at Pitt, NC State and at #8 Florida State. Their record is not good; but they have played a very tough schedule. The Hokies are favored by 5 tonight.
Miami is a team that can give the Hokies a lot of trouble. They have a 7 footer at center, who is very efficient around the rim. And while they don't shoot 3's well overall, they have 2 players that can light it up if we leave them open in Lykes and Wong. And Vasiljevic can also get hot from three.
They can put a team on the floor with 4 of 5 players taller than anyone on our side:

I would like to be surprised; but I really don't have a good feeling about this game. I don't see how we can handle Miller down low and still cover the shooters from outside. Maybe Lykes and Wong will have an off night and Vasiljevic will not get hot. Or alternatively, maybe Nolley will go crazy and our shooters will shoot lights out. We can hope. And they did lose to PItt, which is not a very good team.

Go Hokies!

Comments
Hurricane conditions tonight.
I hope Vasiljevic graduates soon. He is in what, his 8th or 9th year now? /s
Give him a break, he was born without a neck!
Let's Go!!
HOKIES!
Just left campus looking at some work and the Miami charter bus was right behind us already and that was a couple hours ago.
After losing at Miami as 3 point favorites, Tech is now 4 point favorites. Seems legit.
And unlike last time, Miami will have their top scorer (Lykes). Maths.
Despite the line being hard to defend, we should win this game.
Miami lost to UNC. We should win by 8.
Need another game outa BIG JOHN OJIAKO like the PITT game. Continue to improve big man!
how do i sign up to be part of this golf retreat?
First you have to join my church. Then you have to wait for someone to drop out. Probably only be 3 or 4 years before the oldest of us is ready to hang up the clubs. I think we've been doing this for 30 years; so some of us are getting older. Actually, all of us are getting older. Thirty years ago, we played 36 holes every day. Most of us are down to 27; but 4 or 5 still play 36.
Back in my youth (thirty plus years ago) I played in the Summer Soltice charity tournament in the DC area two different years. Everyone in their own cart, shotgun just as the sun rose, played at breakneck speed until the shotgun finish as the sun went down. We were all trying to hit the mythical 150 holes, played in it twice, think we got to 138 the first time. Now playing that many holes in a week would probably do me in.
Early 70s went to Myrtle with a buddy on a under $100 special, three nights at the hotel, remember we quit around 2pm on a Monday after driving down Friday afternoon and we had played 205 holes. Yeah, they used to have free replays. We are probably why they don't anymore.
Anybody know the channel?
Local RSN. Fox Sports Florida for me
576 YES (Yankees) network in NJ for me.....if this GT vs WF game ever ends....
Corey Alexander is calling the Wake-GT game so he won't be calling ours. ๐
Another game that's blacked out. This kind of stuff really pisses me off. I live in Albuquerque, NM and bought the ACCN package for my directv subscription. However, I'm currently living in a hotel in northern VA (for a few months) and my ESPN app tells me it's blacked out (3rd game it does that). The hotel doesn't have the "local channel" available and I can't drive to a bar just to watch this game.
Total bullshit? Can somebody explain local economics and why this happens without making me sound like an idiot?
I'm also blacked out. Its total bs.
Or maybe tell me how to actually watch the game? (if so, you can call me an idiot all you want....)
The ESPN app said it was blacked out but I clicked on it and it plays. The espn app just has my directtvnow info.
What's the local (NOVA) channel? I can't find it anywhere. And espn app says it's blacked out.
Not that I'm missing anything. Looks like we're doing our "come out flat, get down by 100 points" routine.
Coming back. Only down 3 now.
They have no respect for Bede. Not even guarding him to go right and shoot.
I brought this up in another thread. There is no reason to guard him. Makes it easier to defend 5 on 4.
Ojiako doing the big man thing.......another highlight. Finally coming into his own.
MIKE YOUNG WITH THE TECH! Oh yeah baby!
Cause it was a bullshit call. 0 was moving and took a dive.
ACC refs being ACC refs. Horrible charge call.
As usual, they don't have control. So they overreact and start calling everything.
Terrible call and they tee up MY....first time I have ever seen anyone turning sideways get the call as a charge instead of blocking. Turning sideways and moving.....yeah, I am with Mike on this one.
Refs giving the game to Miami.
Haha Ts for everyone. Love it.
And that one should have been a hook in Nolley.
Nah. All air the swiped
Make up tech on Miami?
Complete horseshit
It's pronounced "ACC"
serious question...... how does Miami have nine points off of turnovers when we only have two turnovers according to the graphic at halftime?
Box score on ESPN.com has 7 TO for us.
Guess it was a mistake by the accn.....imagine that.
Yet another game blacked out in the 757. The only thing the ACC network is successful in is preventing fans from actually watching their teams. Worst...deal...ever!
This is the worst officiated game of the year. Even Gminski is calling it out.
We are a couple of nolley makes from being in the lead. Curious to see what this second team does out of the timeout and how quick cmyball goes back to the guys he started the half
Yeah, I'm thinking we should be down 4 rather than 8.
Radford is the hardest working guy on the court every night
Cone can Choot!
I found Waldo
Hunter really needed to drive there instead of pump fake and get it blocked. Be aggressive like Radford.
BTW, Radford is in beast mode.
Hunter was scared. You could see the panic in his eyes when he got under the hoop. He'll learn, kid is only 12 years old.
Radford is a MAN
Told you!
Cone can Choot!!!
No no no no yes Cone!
I'm gonna start getting mad of he DOESN'T take those shots!
53% from 3 coming into the game... shit man.. green light for me. Launch it
CONE WITH THE BIG CAHONES
Holy shit fellas. Cone and Radford have gone off.
Radford, oh man, what a terrific basketball player.
Tyrese Radford is a BEAST!!!
By my count, VT with ZERO turnovers in the 2nd half so far. Wow.
I am not Lyking this it just seems all Wong.
That's not punny.
If Radford can improve his midrange jumper and work in a manageable three ball he's going to be an absolute force.
One thing is for damn sure, Tyrece Mothafuckin' Radford has cemented himself as one of my favorite Hokies of all time.
Edit: right after I type that he commits that terrible foul.
He is the basketball version of Luther Maddy. A 2 star guy who cannot be contained
Bad foul there
Ugh. Stupid foul.....
Missed FT and bad foul hurt us in the final seconds. Let's go!
Dang man just let him score or tackle him. Can give up the 3 point play. Young team will learn
Go to replay!
Stone looks eerily similar to OJ Simpson
Dammit, that's two chances to close this out that have slipped away
This team might be dangerous if they learn how to actually close out a game.
This is absolutely unbelievable. Miami hitting so many ridiculous shots and getting every bounce right now.
Why has Coach Young saved a time out with 5 seconds remaining in both regulation and OT!?
Edit: No timeout called with 11 seconds remaining in OT2
Took a few ill advised shots with under 2 minutes left and they made us pay. Going to 2OT in a game that should have been secured by now.
These are the games they will learn from in the future.
Which shots? Horne was open in the corner. He's not our best shooter but that was a pretty clean look.
You don't want him shooting that shot with time left on the shot clock.
If miami would have missed just 1 damn free throw, this game would be over!
We need Radford to drive and not settle for jumpers on the wing.
On the bright side, we now have a guy who can drive to the basket.
I just want to go to bed. Please put this thing away.
Can we end this please...i gotta go to bed.....
Rebounding down the stretch has been killing us
Did Radford just....
That's an "H" in HORSE for me
Yes, yes he did!
Radford is a magician
Radford literally just made a shot from behind the backboard.
Oh, NOW they miss a free throw
?...theyre 23 of 23.....
Ummmm...radford just pulled a larry bird shot from behind the backboard......
GIFtory is just that shot from Radford. Drops mic
Mother fucker...i gotta go to bed!
Mike young needs to call timeouts tho. I love the trust, but come on
NO FOUL!!!!!!!
Son of a
Oh come on someone run a play there there was way too much time for that half ass attempt to win it
The jump ball in overtime has really been to Miami's benefit
This game is exciting, but this game could cost us in the long term. We just got our legs back after being gassed from the UNC 2OT game and now our next 3 games are against Duke, Virginia, and Louisville.
Sportscenter #1 play?
It's gotta be close
One shot possessions are killing us. We need rebounds.
They are settling for too many low percentage shots. They look gassed.
Our size hurts.
How can that be continuation?
At least he missed the FT
Damn.
Landers Nolley ice cold lately
Wong had the game of his life. Tough loss.
One stupid foul at the end of regulation... What an idiot.
That same idiot practically single handedly kept us in the game. We had 3 chances to win this game and didn't even get a designed play off
Shit on a shingle. Goodnight all.
Damn. We went from being dead to winning with a good lead, had 2 solid chances to win, but lost. FML.
Classic VT sports fan emotions
Always be closing. Somehow scored 95 and still lost to a garbage Miami team love the heart but man they need to do better in closing stages of games too many poor plays to end the games
Very exciting game by these young guys! But dang... that foul at the end of regulation...
Sometimes freshmen gonna be freshmen.
Getting swept by BC and Miami is suboptimal
Welcome to the friends zone.
Tough loss
Probably drops us out of NIT contention. Our next 3 games are against top 4 teams in this conference. We are probably staring down a bottom 3 or 4 finish in the league given the remaining schedule.
It would be rude to prove the preseason ACC polls wrong. Our boys are doing their best to finish near the bottom.
You're probably right. But that's about where we all thought we'd be finishing anyway. Now we finish there with a handful of close games and quite a bit of disappointment which, honestly, is a pretty good thing all things considered.
Next season might be a really good one!
If the league wasn't a complete and utter mess this year, I'd agree with you, but it's just uncharacteristically awful this year and we entered conference play 9-2. The very realistic fact that we might finish with an overall losing record this year in this conference has to be a little concerning about where things really stand.
I want to believe in CMY, but I've been burned before by believing in early results.
Let him have 2 years before we already write CMY off
Guy is complaining about a team struggling the season after losing it's head coach and every single starting player. I'd pay no mind to whatever he says.
I'm not writing him off at all. I still think it was a homerun hire, but I'm just addressing the fact that we've all been fooled before with a hot start.
Our recruiting is lightyears better than it was back then.
I'm kind of disappointed as well. But when I really consider what is happening, there is a whole lot to like about CMY and this team!
The foul at the end of regulation was really a microcosm of the entire second half of the season. This is an extremely young team that plays extremely hard every minute of the game, but sometimes, while playing hard, the guys lose all sense of awareness. That is only fixed by more minutes on the court.
So many opportunities for a clutch stop. Couldn't stop Wong
Well at least we'll be better next year
Sorry to say, but this loss was bullshit. Now watching them interview Miami's HC, instead of CMY. Phuck Miami's luck.
That wasn't luck. They outplayed us when it mattered. We don't have the best basketball IQ in high pressure situations and it routinely costs us points and games. A lot of it has to do with how young they are, but it is concerning that, in a very down year for the ACC we have managed to freefall to the bottom quartile of it.
There were multiple factors. They had luck on their side as well.
Also, Radfords over the backboard shot shouldn't have counted. They were lucky it got to OT
Lol, I get down voted because it's literally in the rule book? Lol
It seems like I've been seeing a fair number of random downvotes in some pretty non-controversial things. Got me to wondering if there's someone on a downvote kick because they're angry or something. Leg for you!
Actually, I think it's legal. You just can't go the other way (from rim side, over).
Shouldn't have counted. Great shot though.

Agreed. We had multiple chances to close it out. Cone missing a FT. The bad possessions to end regulation, 1OT, and 2OT. Miami making some crazy shots or our inability to get a rebound to take back possession.
This is the second OT game where we jumped out to a ~5 point lead and then sputtered to the end of OT and ended up losing.
And I as I mentioned above, losing every jump ball to start an OT puts us at a disadvantage from the get go.
CMY harshly lamenting the foul with 5 seconds left on radio
Tough loss but there were a ton of good signs for the future.
LOVED
- interior presence from Ojiako (Almost felt like an emergence game with all those
Oji-block-o's)
- Radford's ability to take over a game (Honestly thinks he's our best player rn and if he works on his 3pt shot in the offseason then watch out)
- Defensive effort in spurts (Gassed at the end there though which I think led to all those damn foul shots for Miami)
I know Nolley has it in him but watching him chuck away forced shots with 20 seconds in the shot clock after missing 90% of his 20
Shots on the night is maddening. More situational awareness will help this team majorly but I guess you can't expect a team of freshman to have that in a three OT game. Thought it was odd mike didn't slow them down and reiterate all these points in the first two OTs, especially the first when we had a five point lead and were chucking up long two pointers with time in shot clock.
Hopeful that the team will learn from this but man does that one hurt and can't help but echo alums sentiments that this is the easiest the ACC will be in a while so I hope everyone gets past their freshman wall next year.
And lastly OH BOY RADFORD AND OJI !
This team is so young, and I think that's easy to forget. Especially when they dig themselves out of double digit holes to take leads late in games. Yes, they struggle to close, but that's to be expected. IF this team stays together (no mean feat in the era of the transfer portal) then they are going to be an amazing team for the next few years. Think about Williams' first year - we won 11 games total, and 2 in the ACC.
Was I happy with last night's finish? No - but we have been spoiled with a team that over-achieved early this year. Lots of losses lately, but the games have been close, and the team has NEVER given up. That's the sign of a very bright future. Every one of these games is a learning experience, and this team will keep learning,
My sentiments exactly, lol. Didn't read your post til after posting mine below
Agree 100% your three best players are a Nolley, Radford(!), and Cone. A redshirt freshman, a redshirt freshman, and a true freshman. That's a hell of a nucleus plus you have a couple of good role players who will grow in to good roles. This team desperately needs to get stronger and taller on the inside to take that leap into the upper portion of the ACC standings.
FTFY
No doubt
The loss was discouraging when we had so many opportunities to put it away after clawing back from a double digit deficit. However, I am still high on this team. Maybe not for this year, but we were playing beyond our years early on, and have seemingly come back to earth.
We're sitting at 15-11, 6-9 in conference, with a new coach, only playing 3 guys who clocked minutes last year making up 2 jr's and a soph. Everyone else is a freshman or redshirt freshman, including two (I think) who should be in their senior year of high school right now (Cone and Alleyne).
If this group sticks together, we'll be something special in a year or two.
I'm in NYC (well about 45 min north) tonight. They only sports highlight they had on the 6pm local news was Radford's shot.
