Connecticut to interview Bud Foster? According to a report from Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com, yes.

UCONN: A source tells CoachingSearch.com that UCONN is expected to interview Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster

I would've never thought UConn would be the place to give Foster his shot at running a program, but it's a I-A program, that's fighting for relevance post conference expansion, with a recent history of losing. Also, UConn has a new stadium and the university made a commitment to football when it transitioned from I-AA, to I-A in the early 2000s. Given Connecticut's recent slump, and position in the AAC (instead of say the ACC) they're not going to fetch a big name coach, and they might have to take a risk and hire a someone without head coaching experience. I can't imagine a retread like Paul Pasqualoni will go over well with their fan base. In that case, and given his track record, Foster would be an excellent option for Huskies if they decide to hire a coordinator.

It goes without saying, but Bud Foster is the best defensive coordinator in college football, and his loss couldn't be understated.

The following tweets are from Matthew Stoss, the Daily News-Record sports reporter.

Since his arrival in Blacksburg, Shane Beamer has given the program an energy boost. Also, he's helped modernize Tech's recruiting. If his coaching aspirations include becoming a I-A coach, running a successful I-AA program would be a bold bullet point on his resume. However, in case you forgot, last season Georgia State University expressed interest Shane Beamer.

The carousel has just begun spinning, so expect a lot of names to surface for vacant spots.

if bud left, my guess wiles goes with him as his dc and torian gets his shot at dc.

This has always been the thought, but Wiles would also be offered the DC spot at VT, before Torian. If you've got an offer to be DC at VT, you take it.

Agree. I kinda want to cry thinking about Bud leaving. But I also would be very intrigued in seeing what Torrian can do. He has had a ton to do with the success of the defense over the last couple years.

Bud had a quote in Beamer's new book saying he would not leave until Beamer hangs it up. I think he sticks around till Beamer retires given he would be (hopefully) the front runner for the VT job.

This has been the best "calm your tits" post yet on the Bud Foster speculation. Thank you for the feeling of (at least temporary) relief.

Just my opinion, but Shane Beamer never coaches anywhere but VT from now on.

Based on Google, I have discovered it is not the first time Bud Foster has been coveted by UConn, it happened back in January 3, 2011, when they lost Esdall to Maryland (how did that work out?!?).

Now, if Bud goes, I will weep and throw ash on my head in mourning. I would imagine he would take Gray with him and make him his DC because of his knowledge of the system and his recruiting acumen, which cannot be understated. Also, Gray has been UConn defensive back coach before, so he probably has some connections up there, which could work for Foster.

As for Shane, I don't think he should be a head coach until he moves down a division (like Malzhan did) and be exposed to the experience. JMU has aspiritation to be a I-A team and that requires a coach who can handle the transition. I doubt Shane would pull that off. He would make press conference entertaining, no doubt, but would the alumni be pleased with his mouth? That's the thing. Also I have heard that Stinespring is very much interested in the JMU job. He has connection, he is an alum, so I think Stiney could make it.

Just my 2 cents...

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

If I had a few billion dollars I'd:

1) Buy the Redskins
2) Donate enough to get the naming rights to The HorseOnATreadmill College of Engineering at Virginia Tech
3) Create a Bud Foster trust fund to keep him here for-ev-er

HTTR! Buy us a new damn defensive coordinator, Hasslett sucks.

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

I'm more worried about developing talent and depth at CB and LB. We spent all our money on RGIII-and-8 and the cap hits we took for trying to buy out contracts in an uncapped year have put us behind. Give RGIII another off season to get back to healthy, go through one more draft and a fully financed free agent year and we should be better off.

I sincerely hope that you have a few billion dollars sometime soon!

Until it is confirmed that he has interviewed, I can't pay this any mind. This is #Hateweek, and I suspect that someone from the UVA framework made a phone call in an attempt to create a distraction. Note, when the Penn State job became open, the Washington Post reported that Mike London was a candidate for the position, even though there was no evidence what so ever that he had even been contacted. Miraculously, he was offered an extension with a major raise a few weeks later. To me, that sounds like ole Timecop understands how to work the media with disinformation that benefits his goals. It is a shame that he coaches like a four-year old kid playing Hungry Hungry Hippos after drinking a two liter of Mountain Dew.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I actually hated interrupting Hate Week for this.

I've mentioned this on the website before, but my conspiracy theory is London floated his own name to WaPo.

It is a shame that he coaches like a four-year old kid playing Hungry Hungry Hippos after drinking a two liter of Mountain Dew.

French you really have a way with words good sir.

A distraction to lure recruits? Sounds like ML.

London absolutely knows how to work the media - if u haven't watched a UVA game all the color guy talks about is "how young Virginia is" and "how excited they are to have this young talent develop" that's all London planting a fertile field to keep his job.

Beat WVU

They have been young the last four years. At some point, any class has to grow up and show results or start taking up responsibilities. Sadly, all that talent stays at HS level maturation in all if their four/five years in UVA. That is bad coaching. Beamer has had some bad years (like last year) and some mediocre years (this year), but overall his record has been pretty good at producing solid senior classes.

Sadly, all that talent stays at HS level maturation in all if their four/five years in UVA.

Reading too fast, I thought you wrote, "Sadly, all that talent stays at HS level masturbation in all of their four/five years in UVA. " Which may actually be the problem.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

So you're saying the Hokies leaked "London to PSU" to get him an extension........brilliant.

All I know is everyone on twitter is freaking out wayyy too much, they expressed interest in interviewing him, that is about it. Lets not hit the panic button quite yet please.

Know what? That may not be so bad. I mean, yeah it would suck to see Bud coaching somewhere else, but we'd get a chance to promote Torian Gray AND Bud could learn to be a head coach elsewhere before coming back and claiming the reigns from Coach Beamer when Frank is ready to hang it up. I doubt Bud goes anywhere without getting the Virginia Tech Big Whistle written in as a no-penalty out for himself. If Bud turns out to be the next greatest Head Coach, we'll snag him on Beamer's retirement, and if he's the next Ritchie Petibon, we won't find out at Virginia Tech's expense!

Virginia Tech would walk right up to you and punch you in the neck. They're just tougher. Cowherd 3:16

This seems to happen nearly every year or so with Bud being offered a job. Bud has stated many times he's not leaving unless it's to a school in a great conference and has the opportunity to win a national title. I do not believe UConn fits either criteria. I think we're good unless UConn offers him a boatload of money.

Is this the move that people joked about Jim Weaver doing back when we were looking for a basketball coach where UCONN is simply tossing out big names interviewing to try and actually attract other big names? They are hitting us with the "okie doke"!

@VTimHokie85

This information is about as worthless as tits on a boar. A Source?? He doesn't even say a source close to the school. His grandmother could be "a source".

Leonard. Duh.

I actually find tits on a boar to be very valuable...

This is a joke. He's turned down far better programs than uconn in the past. That program is no-wheres-ville (the AAC?) He'd be nuts to take that job

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

My thoughts exactly. Bud said he wants a team that can compete for the nat champ. The AAC will be way on the outside looking in. This would only be a stepping stone, though I'm not sure he would be able to turn it around fast enough to remain.

If a team wanted to take Bud they would need to pay his annuity, which wouldn't be unheard of but since he only has one year to go it may be something against his employment this year. I think Beamer sticks it out through the 2016 season to win the Battle at Bristol and chase a National Championship with Ford and Co., and then passes the team into the capable hands of Foster.

If Stiney goes to JMU, that loss will be felt more than some want to admit.

Just FYI, Stiney is now our Recruiting Coordinator. Shane may have kick-started our recruiting after he arrived, but it's Stiney who has put together our most recent plan of attack. Just in case nobody has noticed, our recruiting activity is off the charts for this late in the season. Not only are we in good position for a number of top recruits to fill out our 2014 Class, we already have our first two commits for the class of 2015. Every single coach is pulling their weight on the recruiting trail - even CFB has become more involved by showing up at various games. This is the way the SEC attacks recruiting, and something we must continue to do if we ever want to fill that trophy case. In the past, the Tech coaching staff has tended to coast the last couple of months sliding into Signing Day with a whimper instead of a roar. Not this year - and that's due largely to the changes Stiney has implemented. Another FYI - Stiney was paid $350k last year - JMU's Matthews was paid $220. That's a big delta for JMU to cover or for Stiney to lose.

As far as Bud is concerned, he would be crazy to take the UConn job. He would be faced with rebuilding their recruiting system while attempting to improve their W-L record with a bunch of demoralized kids who have gotten used to losing. That's a MAJOR uphill battle, IMHO. On the other hand, it's not going to hurt Bud to work on his interviewing skills because their's no guarantee that he will get the Tech job when CFB retires. I also think Wiles will go wherever Bud goes - if anywhere. If that happened, I think TG would take over the DC job, and Brown would move into the DL job.

Shane? Simply put, he's just not ready for a head coaching job, even at an FCS school.

I'd worry MUCH more about TG being hired by an SEC school wanting to groom him for DC, or Brown accepting a DL job at a major university.

I agree.

I would be really surprised if Stiney took a job anywhere else let alone JMU. After the loyalty that Beamer has shown him that would be downright dastardly, and as much as I hated him as the OC he is a great guy. I just don't see that happening. I agree with what you said about Stiney's value.

lil' Beams on the other hand, I think you're underselling him. Let me float the argument that while he may not be the best position coach he has been around Beamer and Foster a very long time and knows the ins and outs of running a football team. This is essentially what a HC does. Delegating the OC and DC duties and steering the ship is his M.O. and I think he's would excel at it.

Beamer's "good 'ole boy" kinda staff is pretty much still in place, even with the youngins' on the staff.
Stiney and Foster are close friends with Frank, they are loyal and have a GREAT thing going in Blacksburg.
As long as we have more Ws than Ls, they all should (and will) be around (same goes for youngin', Shane)
