The current situation facing all of us is unprecedented. While TKP is generally not a place to discuss "breaking news" or emotionally charged topics, obviously the coronavirus pandemic affects us all. We recognize that TKP is a place many of us turn to for social interaction in these trying times, and discussing the coronavirus can be cathartic for many of us. We hope that we can continue to come together as Hokies to weather this storm.
That said, the explosion of comments in recent discussions has veered from useful to pointless and argumentative. Going forward, only Joe and the moderator team will post new "general discussion" threads on this topic. Others will be deleted. Moderators will lock threads as needed if discussion becomes destructive.
We invite you to use this space to discuss important information related to the coronavirus pandemic, like important advisories, closings, cancelations, and impacts on daily life. We are lucky that our community has many subject matter experts in health, science, public safety, public affairs, and local government, among others. Please continue to share your knowledge!
As always, the Community Guidelines will be enforced by the moderators as best we can. At this point, repeat offenders who continue pointless bickering and whose posts continually incite arguments will be banned, at least temporarily. Doing so is in the interest of keeping TKP a strong and positive community.

Comments
Some of you have been easily drawn into bickering with each other and frankly it's grown old. Consider this your warning, mega downvotes and temp bans are justified to keep things in order.
People are dying. Commenters on this board (myself included) have shared about loss that is incredibly personal -- the lives of friends or family members, not including jobs and finances. There are lots of reasons to be sensitive rather than combative. Think before you comment and please err on the side of grace rather than accusation.
Yes and here's one that hit close to home. My wife and I know a deaf woman dying of cancer and it's eating up my wife since she can't go to the hospice due to the damn virus.
While people are dying from the virus, let's not forget there are people dying from cancer and all other ailments.
Idk with nothing else going on the bickering was kinda entertaining, sigh, I miss sports.
(On a serious note, I did not anticipate how many Infinity War and Endgame gifs could apply to any eventual outcome from this pandemic. It's kinda scary to contemplate.)
FUCK here we go again
Three comments in and we are off to a great start.
Congrats on not taking a joke edit:woosh
I got it, it just wasn't funny. Especially given that the main problem across the many threads has been tone.
So my tone cant be dark humor. Ok i got it
WTF, how did this get 200 downvotes so quickly?
There exists a nuke.
Joe has a button he can press that gives people -200 votes on a post.
Moderators downvote at -200 to provide a clear "halt" signal.
Still don't think it was warranted tbh if people had a problem with it they could have downvoted it themselves. Some people downvote cause they see it and want to just pile on it
Take a deep breath and understand it's quite difficult to moderate this topic. The original post pulled no punches about what this space was for and how it would be monitored. It was your decision to flirt with that. Let's move along and not derail the thread. Thanks! 🍻
So we dont have a set rule on what anything can be said in this forum but i say a joke and i get the nuke. I don't get it
Can i get a rule book here?
My man he can't make it anymore clear. Coronavirus news only in this thread. No jokes, no attacks, no opinions. News only.
So you can't try to make people smile in a dark time? Ok
Also going back on a thread that joe closed earlier this week. This is not a sports forum why is it here then?
Why are you so bent out of shape over this? The strict nature of this thread was established clearly in the original post AND in GGC's opening comment. There are a dozen other threads where your jokes and sense of humor will be welcomed.
Your question about why this is on a sports forum was also answered. The TKP community has a lot of different professionals with special insights and clarifications on the things we are seeing reported in this very strange and irregular scenario we are facing right now. Also, you have been around long enough to be both aware, and likely have participated in other "Off-Topic" threads not related to VT athletics.
But ours was a sports thread
Granted it wasn't a strictly hokie sport thread. It still was sports
We could have work out a different way to do it put we weren't giving a chance to do so
I have no sympathy for what happens to you at this point. Stop tempting.
Think for yourself, Question authority
Also didnt ask for sympathy at all
From grocery shopping this morning
Odd tangent, but I have this issue when turkey hunting. My solution is just to use camo facepaint. But it can be a bitch to wash off and if I need to go from hunting before work to work, it's a pain. If anyone has a genius solution to the fogging issue with the glasses and facemask combo, I'd appreciate any tips.
Same. Used to wear masks, even deer hunting, and moved onto paint 4-5yrs ago. I've just accepted I'll look like I either got my ass whooped or been changing oil all day until I get to a shower.
FYI, best thing to remove camo paint...shaving cream.
Interesting thing has presented itself in WV. The state as a whole looked like it was flattening the curve, but there were a few counties, namely the ones close to DC, Monongalia where Morgantown is, and Kanawha where Charleston is, continued to see exponential growth, so now the curve isn't really flattening anymore.
Not surprising, there is less travel to/from WV, so you're about 3 weeks behind everyone else. Expect similar results to surrounding states, just later.
I think when this is over we will be thanking our geographical boundaries as a way to assist in flattening the national curve.
Depressing: only one state has zero deaths from the coronavirus-Wyoming...so far, at least
In the 5th grade, our teacher gave everyone a state to do a report on. I drew Wyoming. While I do not remember much about the state itself, I do remember how extremely few people live out there. At the time ('02-ish) there was only like half a million in that big ol square.
Yep its sparse, Cheyenne is the biggest city at 75,000....however, for pure emptiness it's hard to beat Nevada-it's basically Vegas and Reno with a whole lot of nothing in between. Hauntingly beautiful, though...one of the few places you really need to keep track of how much gas you have and the distance to the next "town". US 50 in the center of the state is a must do.
FYI- just an explanation for the sparseness of population in some of those states
Federal land ownership by state (as of 2013)
State Federal land acreage Total state acreage Percentage of federal land
Nevada 59,681,502 70,264,320 84.9%
Utah 34,202,920 52,696,960 64.9%
Idaho 32,621,631 52,933,120 61.6%
Alaska 223,803,098 365,481,600 61.2%
Oregon 32,614,185 61,598,720 52.9%
Wyoming 30,013,219 62,343,040 48.1%

This is life on the ground for FDNY. This is 24 hours with a suppression chief not even an EMS chief. Reading someone who survived 9/11 talk about Covid 19 like he does leaves me speechless.
