/u/toms47 on r/cfb is making flags for every university. So far he's done the AAC and ACC:
AAC: Reddit, Imgur
ACC: Reddit, Imgur
Here's VT's:
Virginia Tech: The four squares of alternating maroon and orange are taken from the Seal of the University. The four pointed stars on the Hokie Stone cross represent that along with being a Land, Sea, and Space Grant university, it is also one of 6 Senior Military Colleges in the U.S.

Don't love it....
But don't hate it.
Ehhh, I wouldn't go that far
Yeah but in all fairness a lot of other ones seem to be even worse.
Just gonna post this here for your review.
https://www.ted.com/talks/roman_mars_why_city_flags_may_be_the_worst_designed_thing_you_ve_never_noticed?language=en
Best TED talk ever. I show this to anyone that will watch it. The Chicago flag is my favorite.
This video took me from someone who thinks flags are kinda neat to full on flag nerd.
Jesus, Sheldon!!!
Edit: Dude, if you are that into flags and you don't integrate a "Fun With Flags" into a storymap, I don't know what you're even doing with your life.
I'd do one, but I don't have an audience for it. I'm still trying to get someone to listen to me about changing my city flag from the city seal on a navy field with a red right side stripe with a white edge.
Who does a hobby to please others?
Strippers
Yeah, don't think that's a hobby. If it was they'd do it for free.
I have heard of some who took it up (pole dancing) as a hobby/exercise, realized they enjoyed it, and decided to get paid for doing something they enjoyed.
I got plenty of other hobbies I do for enjoyment. Story maps ain't it.
Quite vexing isn't it.
That's pretty terrible.
I feel like all of them are very basic and in the vein of minecraft. I'm not going to go thru each on, but in an 8-bit world, maybe they work...maybe.
Maybe I'm just old and out of touch with things, but how is this like Minecraft? Because it's simple geometric shapes?
Yeah, simple, basic, geometric, blocky.
Ah, yeah, I like that look honestly.
It's not great, but I do like how VT's flag has meaning behind it unlike some of the other flags.
I immediately thought of this when I saw the title.
If you immediately thought of Eddie, you are alright, my friend!
I will always leg Eddie Izzard...and Dressed to Kill is probably his best one
The Death Star Canteen skit from Circle nearly killed me.
Yuck. A VT flag should contain things that are actually recognizable to people with connections to the university. Nothing on this flag makes any sense except for the use of orange and maroon.
Where is the VT Seal or the Pylons 1872 shield? Either of those on a gray background to represent Hokie Stone would be perfect. Why take the four sections and colors from the Seal when you could just use the Seal?
You mean, like the dumbass bendy logo? *Ducks
Take a look at the link I posted above...
I'm not trying to open a Reddit link on my work computer.
It's not a reddit link...it's a Ted Talk link.
Sorry about that. I thought you meant in the OP. I'll look at the TED talk.
I liked that TED Talk. Really cool use of the format compared to typical TED Talks and made me more interested in flags than I thought I would ever be.
So, my VT flag would be the Pylons in maroon on a light gray background (I do not have the skills to actually render this).
So, going by the five rules:
1. Simple: It's just rectangles. A kid could draw it. Check.
2. Meaningful symbolism: The Pylons are absolutely meaningful, they represent the military history of the school and are the embodiment of Ut Prosim. The gray symbolizes Hokie Stone and the maroon symbolizes the more prominent school color. Check.
3. 2 or 3 basic colors: Only two colors, but we run into a problem because they don't come from the standard color set. Maybe you can fudge a bit by saying maroon is close enough to red and gray splits the difference between black and white. Should contrast well enough if the maroon is dark enough and the gray is light enough. Maybe Check.
4. No Lettering or Seals: Check.
5. Be Distinctive or Be Related: Who else has the Pylons? Check.
Which is what it used to be.
where do you think I stole the graphic from?
Pretty close to what I was thinking (maybe make the gray lighter and the pylons much bigger so there's less dead space).
right click on this, hit save image as...
then go here: https://krikienoid.github.io/flagwaver/ and upload it to see how it really works out
It does accept links to images. Don't need everyone to download / upload.
Must be my browser but the web option wasn't actually updating
Just out of curiosity, what does it look like if you reverse the colors?
Isnt it clear though that all the flags have a theme? School colors and simple shapes and patterns.
more maroon, much less orange
damn it our flag has a roundabout! /s
Roundabouts are underrated.
I have no problem with a roundabout, it's the idiots that don't know how to use them that makes me cringe!
Yeah, Americans, am I right?
In all fairness, we don't have enough roundabouts in the U.S. for everyone to really grasp the concept.
I came very close to rear-ending some schmuck in Charlottesville at a roundabout. It was about 6AM and I was driving to work in a big work truck. There was another work truck in front of me and we were approaching a roundabout with 3 total exits. It was near the airport so the ground was flat and clear so we could see very clearly in all directions. We were literally the only two vehicles on the road...no one in sight on any of the other roads...and he STOPS...completely...at the roundabout. I wasn't expecting him to stop...because roundabouts...but I was far enough behind him to stop short of hitting him anyway. I was pretty livid though. I'm lucky that I wasn't closer to him.
They only work if people know how to use them.
In the U.S., it's always a risk with other cars around
If you make a mistake in Germany, they WILL run you over and send you the bill. They expect drivers to possess some level of competence.
I was driving through Olsztyn, Poland a few years back and encountered one of their 2-3 lane wide roundabouts with a damn STOPLIGHT in the middle of it.
Seems like that defeats the purpose, but they must have their reasons.
I assumed the intersection just got too busy and that was the easiest retrofit. Sure surprised me when I got to it though.
Or, I'm sure there's an "in former Soviet Russia..." joke there somewhere.
Traffic circles you!
you can drift into a roundabout when no traffic tho!
A little bit of nerd-dum...

Didn't TheMattBoard already do this when he did his GoT football schools map?
Yes, but mine were more in line with shields or banners than rectangular flags.
ACC specific
All banners:

Though if I had done rectangular flags I probably could have sold more of them...
edit: also if University Customs hadn't killed their referral program
Was thinking how much better yours looked. Should have hired you man.
Thanks!
Note: I am available for all you cartographic and vexillological design needs. Act now, supplies are limited.
I have no idea what vexillological even means :-).
sounds like a lady problem
I think they have a special doctor for it.
I still use yours as my lock screen.
"hey dude, wanna see a pic of my ripping off your intellectual property?"
sigh...
when he posted these originally, he said that it was ok to use them as wallpapers, otherwise, I wouldn't have. Also, I doubt he'd have uploaded them to imgur without a watermark if he didn't want people downloading them.
But you know what...fair enough, we should pay artists for their work, so I just went ahead and purchased a digital license for that image.
Thanks! I appreciate it
I posted these with the intent that people would use them.
The support is appreciated though!
I really like the VT, NC St., and Wake flags... everything else looks crappy/cheesy/forced
I think Duke and Louisville are the worst with Miami and Pitt closely behind.
What's wrong with the one we have?
Or even just this one.
This makes a great cape as well...
only if you've got the matching speedo
I find this amusing and yet revolting....
Welcome to junior year in the VTCC.
I have one of these, but I've always wanted the stripe version shown above.
I actually like it
Needs more Foghorn Leghorn
