Well damn!
Didn't really see that coming....think they'll go after Foster?
To be honest, in my mind this job is a perfect fit for Bud Foster.
A strong academics school, an AD who has faith in his coaches, a team within a state with a lot of good talent, and it's only approx. an hour and a half away from Foster's lake house (also only 2 hours away from Blacksburg).
Wake wants to ratchet up competition after seeing the success that the other NC teams have had this year, and Foster's defense shut down UNC, and held Duke to 13 points - it's lowest all year.
Keep an eye on this one.
Wow. That's a tough job to fill, too. Do they try to find their Cutcliffe (an older guy nobody will poach who is a good coach)? Or do they hire a very young gun to give them a start? Or just hire the next-man-up MAC coach?
Or get crazy and hire Ed Orgeron? That would be fun at Wake Forest.
Here is 2,000 for you sir.
But how will UVA make room for Jim Grobe on their staff?
I will always associate Jim Grobe with WF
He had more consensus ACC titles than UVA or Miami!
He was a good coach with class and always fielded a comptetive team. Didn't they win the ACC a few years back and beat GT?
Maybe its the color schemes, but IMO the opening is similar to Vandy's a couple of years ago. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if they went after an up-and-coming coordinator.
Though I doubt it would happen, could you imagine Chad Morris running his system at Wake? Or Tony Franklin? With the right players, they would at least be a little intimidating...
Hmmm...
ANNNNNNND the Coaching Carousel has begun....
Interesting. Since he's in the middle of a nice contract, he's sure not going to starve.
does the school have to pay out the rest of the contract if the coach resigns? I would think not...
I would imagine that he "voluntarily" resigned for a nice settlement.
I respect the hell out of Jim Grobe and what he did at Wake Forest. It's a loss to their program and to the ACC.
Class guy that brought a blue collar work ethic to a white collar school-(I have a degree from there, so I can bust on my Deac's a little.)
Wake Forest has a pretty poor history in football and Grobe brought some respectability.
I'm sorry to see him go.
Wow. End of an era. That dude was a good coach - hope it wasn't due to health concerns or anything.
One possibility would be Richmond head coach Danny Rocco, he played his last two seasons at Wake under Al Groh (transfered from Penn State). His first coaching experience was at Wake as a GA and then DL coach under Groh. He has other ACC coaching stints at BC, Maryland, and UVA (again under Groh). He also had stints as an assistant at Colorodo, Tulsa, Texas, and a season in the NFL with the Jets.
My second year as a student at Liberty, he took a team that I had watched go 1-10 the previous year to a 6-5 record and the next year went 8-3 and won the schools' first Big South Conference Title. When Time Cop got the UVA job, he moved to Richmond. In his 8 years as a head coach at the FCS level he has won 4 Big South Titles and 1 Colonial Title.
The only reason I can see that he wouldn't want the Wake job is that his nephew, Michael Rocco (of LOLUVA infamy) will be eligible to play for him in 2014 after sitting out this season.
surprise! has a better pedigree than time cop as it sounds. maybe after they fire London next year uva will pick him up so he can still coach Rocco the younger
Much respect to Grobe. Made Wake relevant in the ACC Atlantic, won a conference championship, and did it at a tiny school with high academics and without an athletics budget. If he isn't resigning to retire, we'll see him around again. Maybe UConn. Maybe he'll wait a few years until Debbie Yow tanks the NCSt athletics department, then he'll be brought around to fix it. Maybe UVA will take him.
Best of luck to Jim Grobe. He did good things despite some long odds.
Oh he was good, he just wasn't quite good enough, James.
