Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it appears the HOKIES are heading to El Paso, TX to play in the SUN BOWL,
most likely against UCLA.
The HOKIES' potential bowl situation is interesting due to the fact that The SUN BOWL is the very first bowl game in which the HOKIES ever competed (in 1947). Also, in that game the HOKIES played Cincinnati and lost 18-6. Other projections have the HOKIES going to the Russel Athletic Bowl this year. What's interesting about that is Cincinnati is their projected match up. So either scenario will be kinda a throwback rematch combo of sorts.
Besides being extremely cold day for El Paso, the only other notable thing about the 1947 Sun Bowl was that 'BEAMERBALL' was already alive and kicking. The HOKIES blocked all three extra point attempts that day. THREE! Do you think it is a coincidence that Frank Beamer was born merely one year prior to this game? .. I dont.
GO HOKIES!!! ~8)

Many Turkey legs for anyone who attended the 1947 Sun Bowl or was a student at the time or dare I dream - a player from that game!?
1946: Frank Beamer is born.
1947: VPISU Football, aware of the presence of greatness, decides to begin a bowl streak and block stuff.
1846: Sam Rogers puts together his plan for VT football greatness to begin with the birth of Frank Beamer exactly 100 years later.
1772: Sam Rogers puts together his plan for VT football greatness to begin with the founding of VT 100 years later.
You know it's amazing how most of the great American colleges & universities were founded within 100-years of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence.
1392: Sam Rogers begins a 100-year task of building a boat with his bare hands, as it was required to get Virginia Tech started on time.
38,000 BCE: Sam Rogers invents boats.
Correct. And he saved 2 of every animal in the process.
That wasn't to make sure he could repopulate the earth though. Those were all snacks for later.
Oh no this can only be starting a whole 'Sam' thing so I'll cut right to the chase...
Before GOD said let there be light ... you get the picture... ~8)
God created the universe because Sam Rogers dared him to.
Sam Rogers and God sat there at the table. A single tear rolled down God's cheek. He was scared of the figure that now sat across from him. Whatever he said, he was going to do it.
And then the great decree came from Sam Rogers, "Do it you bitch."
And thus the universe came to be.
The Big Bang was Sam Rogers high-fiving God when it was done.
You, sir, are on fire
Awkward. Don't think I'm gonna go that far with it.
The craziest thing about the 1947 Sun Bowl was VT's record; that Hokie squad finished the regular season with a record of 3-3-3. Cincinnati, on the other hand, had a record of 8-2.
How the heck did the Hokies make this bowl game?
I imagine back then it was like one coach call s the other coach and says wanna play int the whatever bowl?
if they agreed they would play. Almost like a pickup game for college football.
Mike London wishes this bowl format was still they way it's done. 2-10 records would be eligible...
I just lost it. Well done.
P.S. 'we have the security covered...I am doing double duty as a rent-a-cop"
(just an FYI- other than Trenton, central Jersey is actually quite nice)
Central Jersey represent. Hometown awww yeaaaaahhhhh
I take it this would be the Bowl Mascot?
Or whatever comes out of Sabre after a long day munching hay.
Just... Just out of curiosity, wouldn't we have been the Gobblers back then?
nerd alert nerd alert!
Oh balls.
I believe it was because the two schools they wanted turned them down and one of the members on the Sun Bowl Committee was a VT alum. He suggested that the committee send us an invite and we accepted.
wow pretty inside stuff for '47 where did you find this?
Chris Colston's book, Tales from the Virginia Tech Sidelines
Man I don't want to go to the Sun bowl....I would much rather go to a bowl closer to Blacksburg so we can have
as many fans there as possible. El Paso is just way too far...especially for students. But then again I am really
glad we made into a bowl game and the Sun bowl is better than no bowl.
Totally agree, cheapest ticket I found was 675 out of RDU
Road Trip!
I could see UCLA's offense giving us some trouble.
