STEM departments are already the strongest depts. at VT... I sincerely hope he continues to develop and make Tech's liberal arts nationally competitive.
Not only for me, but also because I want to take that coveted crown from UVA.

Actually, if I remember correctly, he jumped before inventing the parachute. Then, upon realizing he was going to do serious damage to the Earth when he landed, he had mercy, caught a pterodactyl on the way down, skinned it, and made the first ever parachute.

No reinstatement of "stick it in," no horse on a treadmill, no laughing in the face of uva after a decade of dominance...this may be the president Virginia Tech wanted, but let's ask ourselves...
Is this the president Virginia Tech needs?

Kinda cool that he didn't know that before that question was asked. He is new in many ways to the community, but seems to embrace the novelty of it all with open arms. I like the move. GO HOKIES!

Who recruited him? Shane or Stiney? Looks like we missed the greyshirt and early enrollment in January, but he'll be with the team to pick it up in June after graduation.

Just reading his background in the article he looks like a great hire. His background suggestions that he can continue our strong growth in research and continue our excellence in engineering.

He has been in Higher Ed since the early 90s - Out of the 230+ applicants, I think the distinguished selection committee made a solid choice. GO HOKIES!

I'm a little bit confused by your tactics. No links, no nothing...
http://www.roanoke.com/news/2433572-12/timothy-sands-to-be-named-virgini... here u go....
Wow, some of the commentors on Roanoke.com are truly asinine.
Yeah, Joe G's (#2) reference is the type of post that keeps me off most boards.
Yeah fuck that guy. 4/16 jokes are never funny, especially in a NRV-based message board.
As an engineer I really like his engineering background. Sounds like he's the kind of person that can help bring in more money to the department.

I heard Timothy Sands BASE Jumped from the Tower of Babel. Now THAT's impressive!
Sam Rogers built the tower of Babel with his bare freakin' hands and was the first person to base jump from it.
Right after he invented the parachute.
Actually, if I remember correctly, he jumped before inventing the parachute. Then, upon realizing he was going to do serious damage to the Earth when he landed, he had mercy, caught a pterodactyl on the way down, skinned it, and made the first ever parachute.
Ah, very good. See I wasn't old enough to be there. Always good to have a first person perspective.
I'm gonna give you such a frowning!

I like.
(From a family of Purdue Grads....)
Nice interest in nanotechnology, and biomedicals.
Wife is professor of nursing.
Same. Keeping it in the land grants.

A nod to stick it in and the decade of dominance in his first quote would have been greatly appreciated. We will give him time...
Welcome Dr Sands!
Quote of the day:
Came here to post that. 9:42 late. Story of my life.
Kinda cool that he didn't know that before that question was asked. He is new in many ways to the community, but seems to embrace the novelty of it all with open arms. I like the move. GO HOKIES!
Enter Sands-man
Great, now go and raise a billion dollars. Seriously. That's your job now.
What's he ranked on Rivals?
Is a two-star, but Bud Foster likes him.....
If Notre Dame, or USC had offered, would be a 4/5 star, though.
Who recruited him? Shane or Stiney? Looks like we missed the greyshirt and early enrollment in January, but he'll be with the team to pick it up in June after graduation.
Mel had him in the 3rd round on the BIG BOARD
Was this a straight up trade for Kevin Sherman or do we also get a compensatory draft pick?
Looks like he is the player to be named later. Looks like we got the better end of that deal. Might have to send them cash considerations.
Just reading his background in the article he looks like a great hire. His background suggestions that he can continue our strong growth in research and continue our excellence in engineering.
FYI, here's his press conference: http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2013/12/120613-president-timothysands....
Impressive resume. Welcome to Hokie Nation, Dr. Sands, and best wishes for a successful and rewarding tenure as our president!
Provost was his natural position, so it will be interesting to see how adapts to a new scheme.
I wish he could redshirt for a year and let Gentry work him out, but with our injuries and attrition sounds like he'll just have to learn on the fly.
He has been in Higher Ed since the early 90s - Out of the 230+ applicants, I think the distinguished selection committee made a solid choice. GO HOKIES!
So if I remember correctly, his background includes a strong emphasis in nanotechnology and medicine.
If so, then I think Sam Rogers would approve.
