2020 Virginia Tech Football Schedule

Take a look at the Hokies' updated 2020 football schedule.

Take a gander at Virginia Tech's 2020 10+1 model football schedule. The Hokies are set to play 6 home games and make 5 ACC road trips, all Saturday contests. It's a backloaded, non-traditional, and ambitious slate of games given the COVID-19 situation.

On a conference call with reporters Wednesday, athletic director Whit Babcock indicated a potential Lane Stadium capacity of 30-36%, with an optimistic maximum of 50% fans. However, given the fluidness of the situation, it's also certainly possible ultimately no fans are allowed.

I don't hate the way this stacks up. For as tough a schedule as this is, there isn't a horrifying stretch anywhere on it.

oh good, the Liberty game is still on

edit: sorry, didn't mean to kick the hornets nest

Can someone explain the Liberty hate? Genuinely just curious. I see comments like this all the time, but I'm ignorant of the history behind it.

They run an online degree factory, have a very controversial founder/president, hired Art Briles AD Ian MacCaw after the Baylor scandal, and have an extremely conservative viewpoint, both culturally and politically.

Edited for fact checking.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

AND this will be the only necessary comment on this thread about Liberty.

Nobody else needs to give their thoughts on it, please.

We can't share facts about an opponent? Have the Community Guidelines recently changed?

We just don't need every thread that mentions Liberty to turn into a warzone/dominate discussion away from the thread's intended purpose.

Everyone has made their opinions known time and time again, and I think RocketHokie provided a summary that would allow the OP to google the rest on his own if he was interested in learning more. We don't need 20 more comments in the Football Schedule thread saying basically the same thing with varying specifics.

RocketHokie13 summed it all up pretty well, and Chris is merely trying to prevent another thread on fire.

I've mentioned in threads a lot as of late, but you brought up a good point, it should get written down. So I did change the Community Guidelines right now.

"Please follow and respect the moderation team's well-intentioned direction."

A well-needed addition. Thank you.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

And on the football side, we're subsidizing their transition to FBS and giving them an opportunity for a marquee win. There are no pros to playing them, only cons. It's like ECU, but worse.

Good point, totally forgot to mention that among all the other reasons why folks may not like them.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

minor fact checking -- it was AD Ian MacCaw from Baylor who got hired at LU, not Art Briles

Whoops, you're right. Edited the comment.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

extremely conservative viewpoint, both culturally and politically.

This makes it sound political, it's not, just basic decency. How Whit can negotiate with a man who helped cover-up the rape and sexual abuse of women over a number of years is astounding to me. And for anyone who doesn't want politics in their sports, Liberty is blatantly political in everything they do. You cannot separate the politics from their school because their school was founded and continues to operate for political aims.

The nuke was from me. I'm not sure how I can make it clearer. Again, we don't want to rehash the Liberty debate at every opportunity.

Locking this thread up. No one create a new thread on the 2020 schedule because it mentions Liberty and the community as a whole cannot handle it. Discuss it elsewhere. Thanks.

It's too late now, but I finally got my act together and emailed Whit about this, laying out my reasoning and disappointment. I think if for every public comment in complaint about this, we instead emailed Whit, he may start to get the message.

Nice, now the cup will reside in Charlottesville for less than a year.

Hope we make it to those clemson and Miami games

Oh shit we gonna be defending that cup early. Thats the game they wanna get in before the rest dont happen.

Clemson back to back weeks won't be easy.

They should go ahead and announce the Dec. 5 game as the de facto ACC championship game

Anyone else notice Clemson has

non conference game

block in week 2. They hoping to get USC to agree to play.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

The situation is so fluid that it's difficult to get too excited, even when looking at this pretty exciting schedule. Still so many things going on that make me dubious there will be a season, or at least a completed one. We will see though. There is this significant financial need to play these games and there are all these signs that they will not be able to execute this safely or consistently during a pandemic with a bunch of 18-23 year olds on a college campus. Two powerful forces working against the other.

Haven't seen rest of schedule. Have they tried to schedule all the traditional rivalry games early in hopes that they will definitely be played?

Does everyone in ACC have the same OPEN weeks? I hope so, that would make rescheduling the easiest should any games have to be postponed due to a Covid outbreak.

I wonder how much time the staff wasted scouting Penn St? Not that it really matters, but don't you know this is no where close to how Fuente thought his first 5 years at Tech would go.

I always liked playing UVA Thanksgiving weekend though.

Just going to be white knuckling it until 9/19. If the season makes it past there it's all gravy.

It's weird. I'm not even close to my usual amount of football season hype because I resigned myself to it not happening in June or thereabout.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I don't think it's going to happen, but this is the most excited I've been in months.

We don't have to play a team coming off a bye when we didn't also have a bye which is nice. A little miffed UVA gets VMI week 1 though.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

UVA in September is softer than Ben Simmons. Trash

Really interesting first game of the season. If the games are played, of course. Charley Wiles will be back at Lane with the Wolfpack. He hasn't been gone all that long. Could be a coaches matchup more than the players.

Also, we had hotel reservations for Oct 3 weekend for the GT game. Now that week is @Duke. Not sure if we will go to Blacksburg that weekend to see the sights or not. That kind of bummed me out.

It's a perfect first game. It's a conference game against a crap team- but unknown for this year. The team will be focused more than they would be for ODU, but NC State is not good- or shouldn't be good. Granted we lost to bunk BC last year in this same spot.

NC State will be a tough game. I think State provides several bad match up issues with VT. It will be a hard first test for a new DC. I think you're looking at States record last year and discounting the amount of injuries they had.

That's fair. I haven't done a detailed analysis, and I do still worry about our front 7. Losing Farley hurts big time too, and they are certainly no pushover- the converse is that there are no divisions this year so the team should know its a huge game and be focused. I think Covid makes it doubly tough for the visiting team now- although this could be a day bus trip for them.

We also had Ryan Willis commit 38 turnovers against BC

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

It's always something when we lose to 6 loss BC every other year or so. It's awesome. It's either Ryan Willis or their huge NFL ready tailback, or their huge LBs or something, but we find a way to lose regularly to their shit program.

We're enjoying pretending football is happening in this thread, take the bad vibes elsewhere.

Pretending a "normal" thing might happen has been a nice mental escape. I get excited for a minute or two (as I was this morning), but then I step back and look at the bigger picture and feel guilty I even got excited in the first place.

Just give me week 2. That's all i need.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Correct. Let's bitch slap UVA and then they can cancel the season. I would be fine with that.

I'm fortunate that I had work during every game we lost last year. Except for bc & d00k. So maybe not so fortunate...

Yup, saw the schedule and thought, "I didn't even consider that football might actually happen, this is kinda awesome"....then saw that the first game is still over a month away. A lot can and will happen in that time frame

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

they are gonna force through the season, and we are all going to endorse it by watching it and then feel guilty for enabling it

edit: for as much as I think having football this fall is foolish and probably dangerous, i won't lie to myself and say I won't watch

I've been firmly with DC on this one for years.

At some point we became okay with explaining away losses to mediocre and bad ACC teams/programs.

The standard for VT should never be that "that NC State team (that was HORRIFIC last year) will be a tough out!" and "x excuse, y excuse, z excuse is why we lost to BC and Duke."

We are either okay with being a mediocre ACC team as well, or we are going to hold VT to the standard of being one of the best ACC teams and a true football school. Dissecting why we lost to a shitty team is fine, I'm always here for nuance, but we need to stop pretending like 2, 3, even 4 of those kinds of losses a year are acceptable for VT as a program unless we are going to dramatically lower our standards.

I was just pointing out that the turnover prone QB that started our season last year is no longer with us, and the difference in the offense was undeniable once Hooker took over. Two different teams.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

It's a valid point, and let's hope that the Head (offensive minded) head coach picks the right QB to start this year. Every game matters in a division-less ACC this year. Can't afford to start the wrong QB

Total agreement there

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Boom. Amen

Jordan Poole flip game week 1. Get the cup back week 2. What a way to start a season.

Is there a built in security net on the ACC championship game?

So if we smash Clemson 12/5 they will get 2 weeks to recover?

Damn, just realized no GiT. Guess they have accepted that Polyteching >>> Single Teching

Typical reaction on The Sabre : VT won't be ready for us; UNC is our real rival so the game should always be played early; They won't have their normal "cold" advantage, etc. It's funnier than Richard Pryor.

At least they recognize that we aren't rivals

I'm looking forward to a major beat down of those clowns this year.

Not sure how NC State got scheduled ahead of that week two preseason opponent!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

It's an interesting schedule. All Saturdays, no game Thanksgiving and if we make it to ACC championship it'll almost be Christmas. Wonder how that could cause bowl games to be scheduled if a season does happen and we make it that far. Also no more than 2 home or away games together.

Stick it in...Stick it in...Stick it in

Unless there is a very effective anti-viral or Covid magically disappears, there will be no meaningless bowl games this year. Why would there be? There is literally no reason to play the weed eater bowl unless you sell tickets to make money. With -at best - limited capacity, it's a losing proposition. The only way the belk bowl goes off is ESPN begs for programming or there is an effective Covid treatment and they can sell normal tickets.

I don't know, I would say if the season actually happens (it won't, but lets use that hypothetical here) then I could easily see the bowl games trying to strong arm the schools/conferences into having the bowl games. I mean, they already jam tickets down the schools throats at higher than normal prices and force the schools to cover those tickets at the higher price when people are just buying tickets off stubhub for a fraction of the price. I would not underestimate the greed of the bowl games, some of which have "CEO's" that make 7 figures, to try and have these games. As long as they can pass off the losses to the schools/conferences, they will try to have them.

Cant see bowl games happening unless things get very very healthy very quickly. Too many logistical nightmares involving matchups and big groupd of people traveling all over the place. That said it would be lovely for it to happen.

Honestly, just the thought of football on the schedule and actual games on the calendar has me excited.

Hoping for the best, and that Virginia's case load can continue trending downward through September...

Can we please just beat the everloving piss out of UVA? I wouldn't be surprised if Bronco tried to get their scheduled SEC'd again so they could have a better chance at beating us. That's their Super Bowl. We saw what they did in the ACC Championship.

Very interesting schedule. I kind of like UVA being early in the season. Kind of a throwback to pre-ACC scheduling, and we get the Cup back in less than a year. I also think Clemson on the last week of the regular season is cool. That's a game that will presumably be the same weekend as OSU-Mich and The Iron Bowl, so several big games in the final week. Also by putting a huge game like that at the end, you would hopefully think more fans would be able to attend, so a good revenue generator for VT. Agree with the comment above that it sure will be tough having to face Clemson two weeks in a row!

An ACC schedule like this every season would be great. Sad it probably won't happen this or any other season.

I really hope this year opens up the possibility of 8 or 9 game no division scheduling with a couple of permanent opponents down the road. Give me UVA and Miami every year, shuffle the rest.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Actually when just UVA back out of the Football season entirely now because they thought they would have till November to prepare?

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

If we can somehow manage to get through September we have a chance at, every freshman redshirting (4 games or less) getting the Commonwealth Cup back, and an undefeated "season"! /s

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

So if we go 2-0 and they cancel the season, can we pull a Bama and declare ourselves National Champs?

We put the K in Kwality

Its very hard for me to imagine how any AD or Administrator would allow young men to travel to Dade County to go play football.

It's bad there right now, and I find it highly doubtful that its going to be significantly better a month from now.

I'd love for there to be a season, but I just don't see how it is going to happen.
