Tailgating banned in Blacksburg for all fall, 2020 sporting events

Virginia Tech, Town of Blacksburg to prohibit tailgating this fall

Not that this is a huge surprise, but it's news nonetheless.

As part of ongoing conversations focused on preserving public health, Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg will prohibit tailgating during the fall season in university and town parking lots and public spaces.

This decision applies to football games, as well as all other fall sporting events, including soccer, volleyball, and cross country.

...

Virginia Tech will continue to monitor all parking lots on game day. Virginia Tech Police will inform anyone seeking to hold a tailgate that it is currently prohibited and are prepared to enforce this decision if individuals choose not to comply.

Town officials say that they, too, will enforce ordinances put in place in response to the pandemic that restrict gatherings of people, especially events in which participants who are not wearing a mask or physically distant from others.

This is an example of an outcome that is expected, yet it still makes me sad.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Can I buy a cardboard cutout of myself with a beer to put in Lot 18?

"Exit light..."

As long as we still gave games this is definitely an ok sacrifice

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

I just want to party with the maniacs tailgating for cross country

Its all about pacing yourself

So I can still tailgate at my house in Christiansburg?

Sounds like lot 18's moving to Jack's house.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

I've got about 2 acres so following the 6' distancing I could still fit around 2000 people.

Math!

Guess it would be capped at 1000 though

NO! You may not. Have you not been paying attention? Listen to us children, resistance (and the Bill of Rights) is futile. We will protect you from yourself and guarantee your safety. We're from the government, and we're here to help.

Just stop, OK? Everybody should know better.

Umm, I know this...

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prevents the government from making laws which regulate an establishment of religion, prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the right to peaceably assemble,

I nuked the one upthread since politics are a strict no-go. The community guidelines expressly state "Don't discuss politics". It's been an ignition source on the forums here over the last few months and we want to prevent the flare-ups as much as possible.

Big oof

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I kinda read that in a sarcastic tone I'm thinking op may have forgotten the /s

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

Even so the community guidelines says no politics and that was extremely political. No good could come from that even if it was a extremely poor attempt at a joke.

Even if it is let the mod remove the comment and let it be. Too many threads over the last few months have been removed or locked due to people not being able to let stuff be. If it was meant in a serious tones it was an attempt to get a reaction and instead of getting nasty at or with the poster it would be nice if people would simply ignore and not start that fight every time. Be the bigger guy and downvote if you feel the need to but lets all take a deep breath.

On the other hand, we mods love it when the community self-moderates! Quote the CGs and post a nope gif

It sounded that way to me too at first, then he reposted and bolded the piece about freedom to assemble. So I think he was 100% making a political statement, just with a sarcastic tone to it.

This is how I read it too πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ

Since we won't get to say it in person this year...

This thread deserves a "who farted?" Beamer face from some moment of disgust during a game.

No tailgating for Cross Country either!!? What the hell..

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

Funny thing is there is a better chance to social distance at the tailgate than inside the stadium (depending the seating arrangement) - none the less, there are other reasons they might have banned it (Cleaning, etc)

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

True except alcohol makes people stupid. Once alcohol stupid kicks in, social distancing will go out the window.

I dont get stupid. I get awesome.

Alcohol is bad for you.

Suave as George Clooney, bad as Bruce Willis, dances like Travolta, and sings like Bon Scott. What a guy!

VT updated their COVID dashboard yesterday and we're not trending really well. Next week's update is going to be telling in terms of the isolation protocols and whether or not we're creating a bigger problem on campus.

i'd say we'll know more in a week... overall numbers are about what i would expect, but the HUGE increase in positive results in the last 2 weeks are alarming.

Yep, JMU has already went to virtual classes after 2 weeks. They are going to reevaluate after 4 weeks. Not a good sign that we will get in a full in-person semester here.

The sad thing is, as of right now I could go to every game....

I see some zoom tailgates happening assuming we get some of the games in. Just saying. I'll be happy to organize something.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Depending on you/your family's individual risk level, and how much you trust your circle of friends, I think there will be an opportunity for a lot of fun backyard tailgate parties this year. You can always fire up the grills and smokers and have an outdoor TV setup.

I know a place!

Your garage game is pretty strong. I approve. Proceed.

Leonard. Duh.

The Busch sign..... LOL

your dedication is strong.

For the team, this means we just must tailgate twice as hard at our own homes. It's the least we can do.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Why not just restrict tailgating to ticket holders? If you're only letting in 1000 people and that number includes the team, media, staff, and player family and guests, I would imagine the 127 left over random fans could spread out pretty far in the parking lots.

Leonard. Duh.

Have to wonder if this years issues cause some to reconsider attending games even more going forward? I think almost all sports are facing headwinds o people just deciding to stay home and watch a sporting event from the convenience of their homes, rather than the hassle of trying to attend a live sporting event. Will this steepen the downtrend in attendance?

IMHO its a unique situation for everyone. I love being in person, but where I live and my current phase of life is not friendly with football. Going to a VT game for me is weekend long commitment, and with 2 boys that are not yet able to hang on to a game for an hour (let alone a full 4 quarters), plus school and other commitments, it puts me a position where i'm way more likely to invest $5k in tv/stereo/streaming/furniture stuff than a full season of tickets.

Next year we are all going to have to wear nametags with name and avatar next year.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I guess noon on a Tuesday isn't THAT early to be getting into the BEER.

I am eternally jealous of your occupation. I brewed a lot in law school, loved it, wish I could do it for a job. Haven't had the balls to pull that trigger yet. And now that I'm running my own solo 'firm' I don't even have time to brew for myself.

So cheers to you and your couple thousand gallons.

Today and tomorrow, making another 370 gallons of a doppelbock.
Friday we bottle 110 gallons of a gluten free pale ale.

For Friday, Owner ran out today to get 6 casks from a bourbon maker so I can put beer into those on Friday.

On Friday.

What is the legal definition of a "tailgate?" Does it prohibit all eating and drinking outside on public property? No picnics in the park? No leaning against my car with my wife and having a snack? Will who counts as a tailgaiter be up to the discretion of authorities? That isn't going to end well.

This seems like just the type of arbitrary overkill that generates backlash.

It means no tailgating. And looking for "loopholes" is what causes things to not end well. Don't push it, don't create backlash, and it won't be an issue...

I really think you should read it as the Tailgate Lots will not be open. As in if you are doing anything other than parking there with a University Parking Pass then you are doing it wrong.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

I would appreciate an announcement to that extent rather than a blanket "no tailgating."

That's why it's called a blanket statement...because it covers it all, including no tailgating.

The town has also 'banned' tailgating... how is this even enforced? My 'tailgates' are basically 8-10 person picnics with my family in someone's backyard several blocks from the stadium. Someone is going to push the issue here and end up in court.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

They are banning tailgates in school and town lots. The school has banned student gatherings over I think 15 people. The town has banned gatherings larger than that (not sure the town threshold). So if you are on your property, not in the street or city/ school lot and there are not students your fine. But taking any government agency to court over restrictions or mandates during a pandemic is a losing court battle. Every city, state and county government has won every case related to mandates, except for religious ones and that was very narrow.
