Some interesting new stuff on defense, but the story is the offensive line coming out and mauling the shorthanded NC State front. Burmeister looked like the same guy at Oregon- zone read is his game, not much passing. The offense was very different under QP- more power and set up man coverage to throw those fades.

I could be wrong but a lot of times that came from either the outside of the line or when we blitzed a linebacker. I'm specifically referring to when ncstate came at us with a little bit of pace and started playing fast. It looked like our tackles basically just walked through the motions and just stood up and let the offensive line take them wherever

There were a few possessions where we looked like our D line was on roller skates, but overall we only gave up 3.3 yds per carry against an opponent with a pretty strong running game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It will be interesting to see what it looks like with Hooker, it felt like QP got to take more shots that BB. Maybe was just trying to get BB in rhythm.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Damn we got depth at QB for sure. The Oline seemed great. The Dline was getting great pressure, but also seemed ot get pushed around a lot to give up yards on the ground.

FAM!!
I was so proud of the way they played, through all of the adversity, they still came out and kicked ass! Running game looked great! D was flying to the football. O-Line dominated! Old school Hokie win!!

Hats off to the staff. Your not only short staff members but also players at practices for last three weeks. Then game plan this to come out missing key parts of the shatter. Figured it out and made it work while getting guys all over both sides of the ball reps and experience.

Protip: Maybe you should look up the [NSFW!!!] uncensored version of this music video. It's called Blurred Lined by Robin Thicke, who is both the son of Growing Pains dad Alan Thicke and also a massive creep.
Head bob woman makes a notable appearance.

Fun fact: Robin Thicke and Pharrell WIlliams were sued by Marvin Gaye's estate because "Blurred Lines" was seen as too similar to "Got to Give It Up." The court agreed with Gaye's estate and awarded them $5.3 million in damages.
Head bob girl was not part of the proceedings, as far as I understand.

N.C. State redshirt freshman Khalid Martin was discharged from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia on Sunday with "no radiographic abnormalities," the school tweeted.
Off top of my head there were at least 8 transfer/Juco players that either started or played significant snaps. At what point do we re-evaluate the recruiting success to include these guys?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I know that 247 re-rates players who enter the portal, but I'm not sure it goes into the team's composite score. For instance Khalil Herbert was a .7985 player out of high school but a .9000 transfer. You would think given the size and scope of the 2020 class that he would have bumped us up a little bit. Same with Blackshear (.8800) and Justus Reed (.8500).

Yes, it's delicious but I wasn't wrong. I said if we score 40+ we win and we did. I just expected more out of NC State. They are terrible. Not FSU terrible but not good.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
True - but think we'll find out against Carolina. It'll be interesting to see how Pitt and Miami play, based on what I've seen from us now and other teams, those 3 (but I think we'll beat Pitt for sure) are the ones that will test us the most and then there's always Clemson.

Big W even through the obstacles, O looked really good especially the run game, defense impressed me for the pieces that were out. Impressed with Murray at CB had been hearing good stuff, definitely looks the part
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
yeah, if something was to keep Hamilton out long-term, you gotta think Claeys would take over as DC.
Smith certainly called a good game, but kind of like the Assistant Head Coach role - sometimes you don't want to take your key people out of their roles for a 1-game situation. I think the backup play callers were chosen with that in mind to some degree.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
How about, based on French's film review of State vs. Wake, State's biggest strength was their O-line and one of our biggest question marks/weaknesses was supposed to be our D-line, and we held them to 139 yards rushing and had how many sacks?
Also, I don't remember but did we have any games last year where we had 2 interceptions? And I wouldn't have thunk we'd do that in our first game, down players, especially when one of them is Farley. At the time, I wasn't all that big a fan of the Smith hire, but he snagged Harvey and seems to be coaching well.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, he had a great interception a few years ago but injured his foot or ankle either landing on that play or one or two plays later. I think if he stays healthy, he's a great player!

Why would you mention that miserable excuse for a basketball game? That is almost as bad as the Rutgers bowl where everyone knew AJ was MVP but couldn't give the award to a punter.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm literally in love with our O-Line this year. Ugh. So much beef, so much height, so many big holes, plus driving people into oblivion. Sure, they had a few iffy plays, but for the most part they did an amazing job.
Also loved one shot of BB walking in front of a few of them and looking tiny, when he's not really small at 6'2. Reminds me a lot of most pictures of me with my friends who would be considered very tall in any other circumstance...but I'm 6'7 and they always end up looking pretty short, even though they're all 6'-6'3.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Well, the thing about getting Bama is it would mean we beat Clemson. And probably be in the Playoffs. So as painful as it seems like it would be, I'd take it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Loved seeing all three phases of the game step up at important times. Big FG kicks, including a 49 yard kick, defense got some key turnovers and 4th down stops, and the offense road graded NC State into submission. 300+ yards rushing will win you a lot of football games.

Damn it Fam, we have an o-line and a gawd damn run game Fam!!! And shyte, those QBs; FAM, this game was so needed Fam! Third string QB scored three TDs Fam! Three TDs!!!!

Hokies to the super bowl fammmmm!!!!!!
1-0 in an all around domination FAM!
Also we have 3 QBs and 2 DCs who wants the smoke???
I would just like to point out that Fuente had us go for 2 then kneel on the 1 yard line to keep the game at 69 total points
Nice
Nice
Edit: already drinking fam
Nice
As member of the Class of 1969, I appreciate that.
Nice
I was gonna give you a leg, but you're at 69 already
Nice
FAM THIS O LINE ISNT PLAYING GAMES

Burmeister looked like the same guy at Oregon- zone read is his game, not much passing. The offense was very different under QP- more power and set up man coverage to throw those fades.
I thought the d line looked kinda sluggish. Hopefully they continue to condition
But we got 6 sacks?
I thought it was 7?

True
First blush, how does the defense look different conceptually?
I've got one word for you ββ-> #76
Hips, feet, anger.
Dude, that's a number and 3 words. But FAM.
Eggs Actly.
#76
There's a new sheriff in town.
It will be interesting to see what it looks like with Hooker, it felt like QP got to take more shots that BB. Maybe was just trying to get BB in rhythm.
NCSU BLEW A 23 PLAYER LEAD FAM!
This so needs to get to plaid status!
WVU LOST, VT WON. FAM!!!
Great win, lots of great plays, some work to do, could have scored 50, ran like fuente has said he wants.
Damn we got depth at QB for sure. The Oline seemed great. The Dline was getting great pressure, but also seemed ot get pushed around a lot to give up yards on the ground.
I think lots of teams are going to give up a lot of yards on the ground to NC ST, those backs looked good in both games.
FAM!!
I was so proud of the way they played, through all of the adversity, they still came out and kicked ass! Running game looked great! D was flying to the football. O-Line dominated! Old school Hokie win!!
No joke. All around solid game.
FAM!!!
FAM!
If everything goes right, we'll be witnessing J-Ham's first crack at this defense.
Hopefully filling the shoes of his esteemed predecessor-
Ryan fucking Smith. FAM!
Hats off to the staff. Your not only short staff members but also players at practices for last three weeks. Then game plan this to come out missing key parts of the shatter. Figured it out and made it work while getting guys all over both sides of the ball reps and experience.
Run game, FINALLY, FAM! All hail the transfer portal!
Hopefully this shows recruits that a Cornelson offense can use a feature back.
Really hope we continue to ride Herbert. Would like to see him or anyone get to the 1000 (I guess probably closer to 800 since we're 2 games short)
To counter - some games he may get 150, he may only need 7 or 8 games to break 1000......
I mean even better. Just need something to hang your hat on for recruiting talent at that position
This gif gets funnier the more I watch it. That head bob by the woman holding the sheep is killing me.
Protip: Maybe you should look up the [NSFW!!!] uncensored version of this music video. It's called Blurred Lined by Robin Thicke, who is both the son of Growing Pains dad Alan Thicke and also a massive creep.

I guess she and her sheep weren't in Marvin Gaye's video.
The line that really wasn't blurred at all was that between that song/video and good taste or decency.
I'm shocked that seemingly no one here knows who Emily Ratajkowski is
FAMMMMMMM so hard tonight! It's been a long 2020, but tonight feels pretty damn good!
We lost the TOP by 55 seconds. Looks like we have some things to work on before we take on a juggernaut Duke squad.
Tbh I thought we were gonna be the team getting blown out but I'm glad Tech had a Uno reverse card in their deckπ
FAM ITS FUCKING COVID LEVELS LIT LETS GOOOOO
Outstanding effort. Just manhandled the Pack.
You should not be able to beat a conference opponent with 23 players inactive, much less dominate them.
Tons of respect and credit to all the players and coaches.
On to exact some revenge next week.
Three headed quarterback attack!
I was texting a friend saying that I was a little worried when QP went in but then I remembered that all that man does is score points and steamroll linebackers.
He flattened some dude on that last drive.
I think it was #12 Boykin, the same dude who got pancaked by Nester. That's a rough night.
FAM! There was actual football played in Lane Stadium today, FAM!
Imagine how loud it would have been in there if the stadium was full? It would have been glorious!
If the stadium was half full, but only half of the people heard it, was it really only a half stadium?
FAAAMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! We looked pretty damn good in spite of being down 23 guys and 4 coaches. That was one amazing game on our part....
Hope the NCST dude is okay.
Yea much love out to NCSt dude.
https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/acc/nc-state/article24604253...
Praise God for that. That was super scary.
FAM! Man that felt good
TransferU baby.
Jerry Kill taught Corny how to run, lol.
Off top of my head there were at least 8 transfer/Juco players that either started or played significant snaps. At what point do we re-evaluate the recruiting success to include these guys?
When we aren't last in the ACC in recruiting.
I think you missed my point
I know that 247 re-rates players who enter the portal, but I'm not sure it goes into the team's composite score. For instance Khalil Herbert was a .7985 player out of high school but a .9000 transfer. You would think given the size and scope of the 2020 class that he would have bumped us up a little bit. All three you mention stood out on the screen. Regardless of number ratings, we are better with those guys.
I don't want to take anything away from Holston either, he looked good healthy.
I was repeatedly asking my roommate, "Who?" at the start of that game lol.
Wooo!!!!

Aren't you so glad to be eating crow?
Yes, it's delicious but I wasn't wrong. I said if we score 40+ we win and we did. I just expected more out of NC State. They are terrible. Not FSU terrible but not good.
Maybe we're just legit good?
I really hope that is the case. We need a few games under a belt to know for sure. Duke isn't going to tell us anything next week.
True - but think we'll find out against Carolina. It'll be interesting to see how Pitt and Miami play, based on what I've seen from us now and other teams, those 3 (but I think we'll beat Pitt for sure) are the ones that will test us the most and then there's always Clemson.
Let's not look past Duke. I mean I know we all want to forget it, but remember Duke last year? Just take it 1 at a time.
We need to go 2-0 this week. Wins against COVID and Duke.
100 yard rusher? βοΈ
Multiple picks? βοΈ
Perfect for FG? βοΈ
Sacks on Sacks on SacksβοΈ
300+ yards on the groundβοΈ
Feeling like you actually watched a Virginia Tech football game for the first time since Jerod Evans was taking snaps? βοΈβοΈ
And as much as I wanted 50, taking a knee at the end was Frank Beamer level class. Running a 2 pt conversion to go up 28? π€·ββοΈ
I'll probably never get to say this again.
My Hokies won a football game the same day my Lakers clinched a spot in the NBA Finals.
It's lit tonight, FAM!
I'm going to upvote you for the first sentence and a half and ignore the rest. Go Hokies!
Big W even through the obstacles, O looked really good especially the run game, defense impressed me for the pieces that were out. Impressed with Murray at CB had been hearing good stuff, definitely looks the part
FAM! Feels good to have football back and to win! Good night Hokie Nation from Abilene, TX!
500 yards and what should have been 50 points of offense with our 2nd and 3rd string QBs.
6 sacks and 2 TOs with our
2nd3rd string DC and DBs*checks TOP: Lost by 1:50.
Well I guess we'll try again next week.
Um, I doubt Ryan Smith is 2nd string, probably 3rd.
I'd guess Claeys would be 2nd.
yeah, if something was to keep Hamilton out long-term, you gotta think Claeys would take over as DC.
Smith certainly called a good game, but kind of like the Assistant Head Coach role - sometimes you don't want to take your key people out of their roles for a 1-game situation. I think the backup play callers were chosen with that in mind to some degree.
worth noting - Claeys was out for this game too apparently
Correction: 3rd String DC
How about, based on French's film review of State vs. Wake, State's biggest strength was their O-line and one of our biggest question marks/weaknesses was supposed to be our D-line, and we held them to 139 yards rushing and had how many sacks?

That pick by Deablo was NFL level stuff.
Yeah, he had a great interception a few years ago but injured his foot or ankle either landing on that play or one or two plays later. I think if he stays healthy, he's a great player!
Last year vs Miami we had 4 I believe
Fam we drank all the beer and then got into the tequila that was in the cabinet
I'm super sleepy but I love you all πππ
I didn't think we'd win tonight FAM. I'm damn glad I was wrong FAM
Let's fucking destroy Dook next week..
Soon
That shouldn't be too terribly hard....
WE HAVE 100 4 STAR QBS AND 100 DCs FAMMMMMMMMMM
also is durham still lane stadium south if there are no fans i vote yes. dalton keen is the bouncer
This season will have a big fat asterisk on it, but damn it feels good to watch Tech beat the brakes off somebody no matter the circumstance.
Almost got a replay of our 2019 basketball game vs NCSU (47-24//45-24).
FAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!
Why would you mention that miserable excuse for a basketball game? That is almost as bad as the Rutgers bowl where everyone knew AJ was MVP but couldn't give the award to a punter.
1) Because we won.
2) Because we won again.
So we took part in the worst football AND basketball games in modern college sports history...fantastic
I would also argue worst bowl game.
I was there.
Dat rushing game.....
FAM!
WE HAVE A FUCKING RUNNING GAME, FAM!!!
Not gonna lie...pleasantly surprised given all the circumstances...Go Hokies! FAM!
Ryan Smith=π
Edit: GIF-TOR-Y π GIF-TOR-Y π
Feels good
*Cue the James Brown..... I FEEL GOOD......
FAM!!!
Extremely impressed with the effort, leadership, and poise today. Makes me excited to see us with a full roster. Looked like brothers playing.
that shit was sick af bro
Lets wear Maroon more FAM
Alright; who's chucking their phone into the toilet next week?
I just upgraded and have my old phone to spare!
FAM 1-0
Dude no
Duck yes ;)
I googled "feels good gif"...saw this one and thought, "maybe that's a little much", lol
Butwhy?.gif
Doug Nester throwing that dude five yards into the end zone made my shorts really tight in a hurry.
we went 1-0 this week, FAM!
I'm literally in love with our O-Line this year. Ugh. So much beef, so much height, so many big holes, plus driving people into oblivion. Sure, they had a few iffy plays, but for the most part they did an amazing job.

Brock Hoffman is a mean and nasty player...and I like it!
For as well as we played offensively tonight we didn't even seem to scratch the surface of our playbook either
FAM!
Ladies and gentlemen and FAM...we have ourselves a running back(s).
Words straight from a UCLA fan: I wish we were 1-0
"I thought we were playing the wolfpac. Turns out they were just a bunch of puppies"
Dude, the new Deftones is fire also! What a weekend.
You rightπ€you know a album is really good when there's no skipable tracks
What did you think if the new Manson akbum?
Not a manson fan
I might give it a listen
FAM!
Craziest thing is we haven't seen this team at full strength...
The fact we did this missing around 1/5 of the team, plus our DC, is pretty incredible.
THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM
FAMMMM, we want Bama!!!!........ok I'll pump the brakes on the bama thing
Well, the thing about getting Bama is it would mean we beat Clemson. And probably be in the Playoffs. So as painful as it seems like it would be, I'd take it.
So when should I call my doctor?
Well it's only been an hour or so, if you're still rock hard at 4:30 I'd recommend giving your doc a call.
Um.... can I have my phone call now?
QuarantWIN, amirite?
Loved seeing all three phases of the game step up at important times. Big FG kicks, including a 49 yard kick, defense got some key turnovers and 4th down stops, and the offense road graded NC State into submission. 300+ yards rushing will win you a lot of football games.

Coulda easily been 4 TDs too.
I'm looking forward to French unpacking this win!
According to the Roanoke Times, this is only the 3rd time we have had 300+ rushing yards against an ACC opponent since we joined in 2004. That is unbelievable after the rushing woes of the last few years.
Roanoke Times
I wasn't able to watch because of an account glitch but yay
Its the next day and I'm still fired up. LET'S GO FAM
That was fun.
Legs for everyone fam
FAM!
Listened to Laze and Burnop sitting by the fire pit sippin' bourbon. The domination was real.
2/10 would not watch again. Not enough jet sweeps. What is this shit with running with your running backs?
Endorsed. We averaged over 25 ypc on jet sweeps. Why would you go away from your most effective play?
Great stat. 1st for -2 yards, 2nd for 52 yards.
It was actually +2 yards. Turner finished with 53 yards rushing.
That's right. I wasn't even thinking Tre had two. I was thinking the one with Blackshear that went for -2 (maybe it was a redirect handoff not reverse).
Bradburn had some NICE punts, multiple downed inside the 10. You love to see it, fam
Even with one rather short punt, still averaged over 47!
Fam! Ryan Smith will be the answer to a trivia question: Who is the first DC to win a game after Bud Foster? Crazy.
FAM - 1st Home Opener since 2000 I haven't been in the stands. I'll take the win and the new viewing setup
Also - this thread needs some

your idea to take the TV and watch outside...

I might have to try that next night game.
Glad my worries about the rust from the huge layoff vs. a team that had already played a game were unfounded. If we can run the ball effectively, should be a good season.
Yeah, the data hasn't supported the warm up game theory lots of people have had.
Herbert is averaging 17.3 yards per rush. FAM
Tre Turner is averaging 26.5 yards per rush. FAM
Damn it, if this doesn't prove we need moar jet sweeps, can I get a FAM!
Nice team win FAM! Go Hokies!
Petition to give the 25 to backup LS Enzo Anthony. Got it there 11 times without fail.
Khalil Herbert with 195 all purpose yards on 10 touches in his debut!! FAM!!!!!
Just imagine this team PLUS Waller, Hooker and King, and 20 other dudes
We're going to have a problem....can only put 11 guys on the field at once.
FAM!
That was a game worth watching.
Made me nervous when Bermeister was out, but QP came in and got the job done.
The system is working.
This team down 23 players, coach/staff having been disrespected for near a month because they've had COVD issues and needing to postpone games.
My response:
Just mounted my TV in my new (Navy Retirement) house right before kickoff, FAM!!!
Thank you for your service
FAM! After missing the first Herbert score due to endless "buffering", I reset my modem and after that was able to watch the glorious win unfold.
FAM! Anybody who has ACCN can rewatch the glorious win tonight at 11:30.
It's available through the ESPN app, and was available much earlier today with the right cable provider (not sure which all work - I used Verizon Fios).
