So basically we are almost the same as last weekend with a few exceptions. Andy Bitter has already said Hooker is dressed and warming up so he will be back along with King.
EDIT: Well, fuck. I don't like seeing all of those names out on defense. Especially Diablo.
EDIT2: And Tisdale. At least we have Dax there. We are going to have to score 40+ again this week.
A lot more defensive players are out this time, and we've subbed Claeys for Ryan Smith in the coaching department. This is going to be a slog.
At least Claeys has been a DC so he has done this before.
Tisdale could be a huge loss. He was watching for him to man up Noah Grey and wear him like a form-fitting sweater for this game.
Not entirely unexpected, but hopefully not anyone of real consequence.
*Checks back 5 mins later* Welp....
Our entire CB 2deep is out...
And Deablo and JR Walker...
The secondary got wrecked this week.
So can we assume they'll be out next week too?
I'm honestly more worried about this question than today.
If it's this bad next Thursday if I'm Fuente I'm postponing the game.
Do we even have enough DB's?? Jeez, Probably gonna need to score a ton Of points today!
Offense is gonna be too put up some points today. Gonna need to be a Big 12 shootout type game
I'm starting to see why 247 ran an article about walk on defensive back Tyler Matheny today.
You saw that too, eh?
Edit:. Son of a...
At least he got some snaps last week 😬
With an INT this week
And a Sack!
MATHENY IS A LEGEND
Tyler Matheny pre-game: "Look at me, I am the Caleb Farley now"
OK, I'm rolling on the floor.
Why isn't this plaid?
I got that movie reference. I see what you did there.
Are other teams just not testing? Not contact tracing? Or am I missing something and there are other teams playing without 20+ players every week? Because it sure feels like we're alone.
Notre Dame has more than we do. They have a solid 3rd of their team out.
I think it's more that we just got hit with a big outbreak with bad timing. Other teams had big outbreaks early in the summer or the start of camp. Some teams haven't been hit hard yet at all, but that makes them potentially time bombs.
Its because we are so close to DC, clearly
Playing with fire in the comments, I see.
He means DC Wilson
So playing with fire AND gasoline.
Timing and contact tracing. Contact tracing is rougher cause, if I'm not mistaken, you can't test out of it. Doesn't matter how many negative tests, need 14 days for incubation period.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Starting to think maybe Caleb Farley wasn't making things up in his interview with Peter King.
Maybe, but I got the impression a bunch of our guys are out from contact tracing and not necessarily positive results. So even if our guys were wearing masks and went to the dining hall when someone who tested positive was there, our guy is out for 2 weeks regardless of whether he tests positive or not. So could have close to nothing to do with the precautions the team is taking. I don't know if that's what's happening, just saying it may not be anything the team is doing. And I keep going back to us not knowing how likely it is to pick up from surfaces. That makes things WAY more complicated in terms of what you'd have to do to protect yourself if you have to go out and get food 3-5 times a day. Let alone any other circumstances you'd touch something in as public a place as a university is.
They shouldn't be within 6' of anyone at the dining hall anyway.
Contact tracing is easy to avoid for disciplined programs. Undisciplined programs do dumb stuff like not wear masks on the sidelines in front of everyone and are run by coaches who take their mask off to celebrate in the locker room after games.
You didn't watch much football this weekend did you? I can't name a team where coaches and staff didn't have their masks pulled down at multiple times during a game. Hell Matt Campbell didn't wear his mask for almost an entire quarter.
Not great Bob dot .gif
Well that sucks. Why are they even playing this game?
Trial by fire. Hopefully the defensive line can keep some pressure and force some mistakes so we don't have to rely on the secondary. Gulp.
Yeah we need to get out to an early lead so Bud can get creativ oh god damn it
I am surprised we have enough secondary players to play the game
I am sure it was close. This is getting into the grey area. What exactly are the rules when you are hit this hard on one side of the ball but relatively healthy on the other?
Just seems like week in and week out we have so many guys out for contact tracing and positive tests and the other ACC teams don't have the same problem at all outside of Notre Dame. I know Clemson and Carolina dealt with their outbreak a couple of months ago but this is insane. I hope we are good to go next week or it's going to be bad.
If they are out for contact tracing we are going to be thin as shit against a pass happy team.
I'm confused as well... How are we the only team still struggling here. Fuente said that they would have struggled to play NCSU in week 1. So now we're rolling into week 4 of college football and we are still struggling to field a team?
We aren't the only ones struggling here. Houston has yet to play a game, Notre Dame is missing a 3rd of their team, and games are being cancelled or postponed every week. This sucks but we are not by any stretch the only ones dealing with this. Maybe the only team dealing with it that you are paying attention to.
I guess my point wasn't well articulated... How are we still struggling. Most teams seem to be able to navigate through it within a couple of weeks. We are in week four here...
Maybe I'm missing something really simple here.
This virus doesn't follow anybody schedule or plan. You just have to deal with what happens and do your best to prevent the spread. Sometimes that is going to make things inconvenient like what is going on with our defense today.
Sure, but it seems like some of it's contact tracing rules, not infections.
Yes, that is true. But contact tracing is one way we prevent the spread.
Not working apparently
Eh, it's unclear if they are out because of positive tests or contract tracing. If the latter it probably is preventing the spread.
I get it, I really do. Even so, there is a devil on my shoulder that wonders why we are stressing out so much when most of the team will have tested positive by the time this season is over. Meanwhile, teams like Clemson had a locker room sweeping outbreak immediately after coming together for summer practice. How much different are the two situations at the end of the day?
Some teams got hit during the offseason, so there's no telling how long they were dealing with it because there weren't games that had to be moved around.
We still haven't seen how long this will be affecting ND. If they play next week, they could be missing 20 players.
Sounds like contact tracing is worse than actual positive tests. Longer quarantine, no testing out, and a greater chance of getting in that group again.
Don't forget that people are out for 2 weeks for contact tracing. So if they found out due to contact tracing they have to quarantine, they have to sit the next 2 games. A bunch of our guys that were out this game and last could be from a scenario like that. Also, we're at higher risk of contact tracing issues since we didn't send the rest of the students home. It's a lot harder to avoid 10,000 people than it is to avoid 1000.
I feel like we are the only team doing any contact tracing. Just don't see how we have so many dealing with it and NC State didn't have an issue?
Sheesh... Chase Brice is gonna have a day no doubt. We are going to need to score a hell of a lot of points to win today.
Also according to Andy Bitter, Burmeister is warming up with Hoffman, Herbert, and Blackshear while Hooker is with Hudson.
Feel good with Tracy Claeys calling the defense today, but damn almost our entire secondary is out and Tisdale. Not great Bob! Gonna need to score some points today.
Season is starting to feel like COVID vs VT.
With contact tracing we are never going to be able to field a full team this year.
Any word on Duke outages? (get it?)
Srsly tho - can't find much re a Duke list
Any news about Duke players out?
HOT TRASH ON SPECIAL TEAMS!!! NO EXCUSES WITH PLAYERS BEING OUT!!!
Should refresh before commenting. I don't seem to see anywhere else where teams are down 20 players.
Not sure what is going on with VT Covid protocol. Watched the WVU-Baylor game. WVU had one starter out due to Covid and did not hear mention of any Baylor players missing but perhaps there were.
Does every school have their protocol published? It's insane to me that you have to quarantine 14 days due to contact tracing even if you test negative multiple times. That's just dumb. I can't imagine every team is doing that.
It's an ACC policy based on doctors direction. The virus can be latent for 14 days then pop up.
The gaming can be with not admitting who you are hanging out with and never letting players spend more than 14 mins together.
But our problem is positives. We have SEC levels of positives.
Wrong thread
So the unfortunate kicker to this is...
All of the "new" players this week---Tisdale, the entire starting secondary essentially-- more than likely will be out for UNC as well due to the 2 week Tracing protocol.
I suppose there is an outside chance that Waller comes back, although, based on rumors that seems unlikely.
Going to be another huge challenge
What is the likelihood we get another round of new players this week that forces a postponement? If we get any additional DBs taken out how does that work?
Wow, that does not bode well at all. We barely beat Duke yesterday. UNC might not be a world beater but they are going to be much better.
We get Chatman back right? Might be the only defensive player if Waller can't play
I am thinking VTs approach to contact tracing is more conservative than other teams. That tells me other teams are hedging on this ruling and VT is by the book.
Well, interpretation matters.
Glad we won. Not sure the game should've been played though, when you are missing that many players in the secondary.
There is basically no chance we get Tisdale, Murray, Chatman, Deablo, Walker, or Taylor back for this week's game. Waller is also unlikely, from what I read on here.
If the roster stays the same, we can't cancel unc, since we already proved we were willing to play with that many players out. But, if we lose Thompson, Strong, or Matheny this week...I don't see how we don't cancel this weekend.
I don't think it would be possible to reschedule unc, right? We only have Thanksgiving open, and they play ND that weekend.
