No kidding. The B1G moved up a collective 10 spots by my count, without having played a game. I suppose at this rate, in 3 weeks when the B1G finally plays a game, they'll fill the whole top 10.

Just pointing out the assumption that we couldn't do anything good with one. And with the way our O-line is doing/improving, I'd assume our running production will improve also.
Also, I just want to beat them. Most Penn St. fans I know are insufferable.

True, don't get me wrong I would love to beat them as well. But I'm pretty sure a high school recruit would laugh at you if you tried to pull a "look what you could have been" when comparing VT to Penn State right now haha.

Why? The big knock has been Fuente only uses a committee approach and we are showing extraordinary numbers right now. Doesnt necessarily have to mean we are better than Penn State, just that we can do cool shit too. Maybe the next cycle of recruits will take notice. Maybe somebody asks Ford why he made his choice and he says he was wrong about VT.

Because VT just doesn't have a good reputation among high school kids right now. We are kind of irrelevant. Penn State on the other hand just had a RB go #2 in the draft not long ago.
We have had two stellar games on the ground against irrelevant teams. Trust me, no one cares right now but us. For us VT fans, it's everything. But for the rest of the country, they probably couldnt even tell you what our record is right now.
Perceptions don't change in two games. It takes a long time.

Ok so? A 16 year old is still going to see Barkley every Sunday saying he played at Penn State. It matters. People here seem to think that Teller being an All-Pro lineman right now is good for VT. Why does it help us but not other schools?

Penn State on the other hand just had a RB go #2 in the draft not long ago.
He didn't go #2 because he went to Penn State. He went #2 because he was a seriously good RB.
As far as other teams caring about us, the ones scheduled to play us are paying attention. So that list includes UNC, Miami, and Clemson. I just hope we get our whole team past this COVID stuff and see what we can do this year.

Doesn't matter. He still went to Penn State and went #2. I hear people here talk about how having Teller in the NFL is helping VT. Or when the Fullers have great games it reflects well on us. Those guys would have gotten drafted elsewhere as well. Why does it matter they come from VT but not from other places?
But no. Hell, we are playing UNC next and they don't know much about what is happening at VT. I took a peak at a UNC fan forum and I don't think I even saw a mention of Herbert. People just don't really care that much. I know it's hard sometimes because from our perspective, it's the most important thing going on in football, but other teams aren't noticing as much as you would like to think.

You aren't wrong. I consider myself a pretty big fan but I cannot tell you much about any team other than VT. I would hope recruits are a little different though and actually dig for some information.

Yeah of course, it certainly doesn't hurt. I'm just saying that it really doesn't even move the needle yet though in terms of how VT is perceived nationally. We did pretty substantial damage to that image over the past decade. It's gonna take more than a great RB to change that. But hopefully we are taking those first steps to recovery.

People outside the top3 are rarely remembered. And certainly not very well known among the general population. BC had a Heisman finalist RB not took long again and it certainly hasn't changed the perspective of their program.

Worst case scenario, the guys we had last week will get 1st team reps all week which will help them.
I would rather get 2 or 3 of those guys back though!

I know there are some games which have been cancelled, and aware Notre Dame shut it down for a couple weeks, but, of the teams that are playing, no other team seems even close to having the number of guys out that we do. Why is that? Are VT's protocols different than everyone else's? Just seems like things are definitely off dealing with the testing, virus, or something. Great job of overcoming, largely through a revived running game, but got to solve the puzzle of how to get less players sidelined. Again, it looks like most other teams, who are playing, have somehow figured it out. Would be nice to see what this team could do with most starters out there.

Maybe not...
Arkansas State's upset at Kansas State was even more impressive, considering it was w/out 20 players, including 8 starters— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) September 13, 2020
Arkansas State had to postpone their next game because they couldn't fill out a two deep at a certain position.
Louisiana Tech without 6 starters & 20 players overall on 2-deep at Southern Miss tonight, sources told @Stadium. 1st report Yahoo. Players unavailable for Bulldogs is a combination of injuries, COVID & contact tracing— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) September 19, 2020

Saturday's Vanderbilt at Missouri game has been postponed because of COVID issues at Vanderbilt, sources told @Stadium. 1st reported by @PowerMizzoucom. Vandy had only 56 scholarship players last week vs. South Carolina— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) October 12, 2020
Max number of scholarships on a team is 85. That means Vandy had up to 29 players missing.
Missouri's homecoming game against Vanderbilt may be postponed. Mizzou had 61 and Vandy had 56 scholarship players available this past week, the minimum is 53.https://t.co/9e2TmTKQEj— RedditCFB (@RedditCFB) October 12, 2020
If that is true, Mizzou was missing up to 24 players.

Georgia Southern was also out 30+ players for one of its games, we are probably one of the more high profile ones and obviously as fans we are exposed to our own outbreak quite bluntly every week so there's a little confirmation bias there

On the bright side we only dropped to 23 on the ap this week. The scary dark side is that FIVE of the teams ranked above us are winless......which is oh so 2020.

Beat UNCHEAT.
Just. Keep. Winning.
19th in the AP.
You might want to check the numbers in your header post... but nice to see the recognition.
Just love seeing all the 0-0 teams in there ranked so highly. /s

I so wish we could have our Penn St. game back. "Hey Devyn Ford - look what we can do with a good RB."
Uh, let's not pretend Penn State hasnt been able to do a lot with a good RB either lol.

Barkley would have gone that high no matter what school he went too. He is that much of an athletic freak with good ball carrier vision.
Ed Oliver proved you can go high in the draft if you are that impressive if a player, no matter what school you go to.
EDIT: stupid autocorrect
Ok so? A 16 year old is still going to see Barkley every Sunday saying he played at Penn State. It matters. People here seem to think that Teller being an All-Pro lineman right now is good for VT. Why does it help us but not other schools?
They can brag about Miles Sanders too.
This.
Sanders would have started for almost any other P5 team, and he has been a very good NFL RB to this point.
Penn State on the other hand just had a RB go #2 in the draft not long ago.
He didn't go #2 because he went to Penn State. He went #2 because he was a seriously good RB.

Some might, but I bet most are just like everyone else. They see and hear what is in the mainstream media. We aren't there right now.
Google Khalil Herbert news and it's just local articles. We're just a blip.
Yeah, that's just reality and I'm fine with it. He could do it a whole season and most people wouldnt know who he is.
For sure. He could rush for another 200 Saturday and if we get beat by UNC handidly it'll be even worse.
If Herbert rushes for 200 yards Saturday we will NOT lose that game
If Howell passes for over 300 yards we could.
If he rushes for 300 and the defense can't get a stop, then yes we can certainly lose the game.
Oh you sweet summer child.
If he does this all season, it will be good for him and good for VT.
And people who track college football will notice. We're playing UNC, Miami, and Clemson in a year when they (and we) are all ranked.
Just win, baby. They'll notice.
Yeah of course, it certainly doesn't hurt. I'm just saying that it really doesn't even move the needle yet though in terms of how VT is perceived nationally. If he keeps up this pace to rush for 1,500 yards and 15 TDs he'll be a Heisman finalist, and it'll be near impossible to ignore.
People outside the top3 are rarely remembered. And certainly not very well known among the general population. BC had a Heisman finalist RB not took long again and it certainly hasn't changed the perspective of their program.

There was also this little gem: College football winners and losers from Week 5
This seems like a team that does their homework.
Currently second leading rusher in the ACC with less than half the carries of the leader.
Really hope we get some DBs back by next week.
Worst case scenario, the guys we had last week will get 1st team reps all week which will help them.

Blacksburg got hit really bad when students came back. It was one of the worst hit college towns.
If i remember correctly, #17 on a list of mostly college towns. So, yes, bad, but not a unique problem.
Maybe not...
Arkansas State had to postpone their next game because they couldn't fill out a two deep at a certain position.

How did this turn into a penn state jerkoff thread?
Who is jerking off penn state?
This is a dangerous question to ask
On the bright side we only dropped to 23 on the ap this week. The scary dark side is that FIVE of the teams ranked above us are winless......which is oh so 2020.
I wonder if UNC scoring on us again would have had any effect on our ranking.
If it was like our first week, most of them will drop off the polls after their first games. We won our first game and dropped off top 25.
