Defense is being exposed for exactly what it is....soft. The difference between Virginia Tech and the top tier programs is that those defenses arrive with an attitude.
And that they don't have 10 players out from their 2 deep.
Dude our CB's have been out 2 weeks, DD is out, freaking our defense has been playing pretty well given who all has been out. But having that many DB's out against a QB like Howell is, let's just say, less than ideal. Hell, our defensive coaches have been out a lot. The coaches probably have to shift schemes some from week to week depending on who they have available. We haven't even seen our defense, so not sure about calling them soft.
I'm not making excuses (or like Reese said "reasons"). We're depleted and decided to play. If we get houses because of depth we lost fair and square.

When you can't practice because of COVID, guys will be rusty, and it takes less than 2 weeks to lose peak physical performance. So yeah, if we lose because someone scores a shit-ton of points, that'll happen and just hope our offense can score more.

After UVa was postponed, if you told me we would be 2-1 after 3 games, I'd have been fine with that. Will log back in after I get back to see how the second half went. Hopefully we can make it close and have a chance late. Really want the team to not fold up and die like they often did the past 2 years and bounce back next game if there is not a major comeback here.
COVID has been tough on this team. But I would make the case that nothing has affected this team as negatively over the last 4 years than Corny.

Our playcalling is timid. We aren't attacking. We are playcalling scared.
It's like we are scheming to win the game 7-3. Which is ok if we had an excellent defense, but we have given up 35 in the half. It's like we had zero pulse on what this game was going to be and we are just adamantly refusing to adjust.

What I dont get is we know we're shorthanded on defense so ball control offense is the most obvious thing to do to help negate that weakness. Instead we're running hurry up and throwing the ball? I'm a complete football idiot but that seems so obvious to me.

Ugh, I don't think it was a terrible call but the 3rd down call could have made the 4th down call a lot easier. Also, BB's erratic arm is always gonna be a wild card there so even the right play call Mught not be executed well with such poor throws.

I know this might make too much actual sense but what about this as a game plan...
1. Run Herbert and Blackshear until its not successful.
2. If UNC sells out to stop the run, have HH in the game, since he is clearly a better thrower than Burmeister.
3. Extra Bonus: by running the ball, you can control the clock and keep your thin and depleted secondary off od the field as much as possible.
I assumed the game plan was going to be something like this from the start.
We are getting blown out, but I don't think we should over react. The N.C. state game wasn't as good as it seems and this game isn't as bad as it seems. Kind of hard to compete when your entire secondary is out. Metheny who was a hero last week has missed two or three open field tackles on huge gains. We dropped 3 poorly placed balls on third down. It happens.
But we are being manhandled by their o line. They are moving the ball at will. That is concerning.
What are the reasons UNC is looking like the Chiefs this game and just above average their first two games?

Our DL has been absent aside from 1 play. They are getting thrown around, LBs are somewhere, just not near the ball and our green safeties can't tackle. Not good

I'm glad we went with Hooker. If we can get back to game speed that is what's best for getting him ready to start the rest of the way. If injury or other circumstances force BB back on the field we know a certain type of offense we can run with him. Not a bad problem to have, but we need Hooker's passing upside.

The sad state of affairs is our offense. The offensive game plan was atrocious. Hopefully we go to Hooker and only Hooker for the rest of the season. I dont think BB is THAT bad but I think we have two great RBs that can handle running the ball while our QB should be taking advantage of the WRs we have.
I think so far I'm most disappointed in Dax. I loved that guy since he signed but he gets washed when anybody engages him...that includes freaking Dazz who just blocked him all the way up the field on that last drive.
