I could see it. UK's fanbase is getting tired of him (unfairly IMO, they should build that dude a statue). If I were him, I would want to leave on my own terms instead getting fired.

Can always come back if he likes the new coaching hires, but don't blame him if he has a redshirt to burn with 2 years of eligibility. For the ones without a red shirt one would hope they treat it like a contract year for a pro player and do their best to ball out and get good stuff on tape.
