The Chapel Hill/Durham area was just a rainy day Saturday. ECU game last year was almost as bad.
I could maybe get behind you on the NC State game. It actually rained more in Raleigh, and their field sucks.
The ECU game last year was actually a good comparison. When it started REALLY raining in Greenville, the Hokies' momentum was crushed. It was palpable. Same thing happened to the Heels in the 3rd qtr Sat. Playing in the rain is really just a test of who can turn it into an advantage with prep and positive thinking. Hokies 1 / UNC 0 in that department.
Maybe I was looking at different UNC sites, but I saw very few, if any, post-game "VT isn't a good team" comments (although I saw some prior to the game).
I did see lots of posts blaming the weather (although conversely very few before the game), Elijah Hood injured, the players, the coaches (poor game plan, poor play calling, poor motivation, poor preparation), the schedule, Bud Foster having extra time to prepare, the officials and so on. Pretty standard stuff after a loss. And a few, but very few, were lamenting the turnout.
There were even a few saying that, don't kid yourself, VT is a good team.
And if you don't think VT fans are capable of ripping kids, I've got two words for you:
Sean. Glennon.

I'd like to think Fuente is too good of a husband and dad to make his family move after just one season in Blacksburg. I'd also like to think he's too good of a hokie to move ever.
My biggest concern with how quickly Fuente has gotten us back on track is that there are too many big programs that are going to be looking for new head coaches. Doing it at Memphis is one thing but smacking around the ACC is another story. No buyout is going to scare off any of the three SEC programs that will likely be looking for a head coach and then there is also Texas.

I appreciate the work the OP put in to this, I really do. As I've gotten older I'm caring more and more less what people think, not just in football but everything. It's really liberating! Miami said the same shit in '09 when we beat that ass in a monsoon too. At the end of the season WHO CARES?!? When/if we make it to Orlando representing the coastal the only thing that will matter is the W for VT next to this game. Fuck what the experts say, fuck what UNC fans say...they're gonna be just as salty when beat that ass in roundball too!
I'm happy to see VT ranked, but they're 0-0 this week.

I'm not a huge Tennessee fan, but I don't remember us taking them to 2 OT. Just sayin'.
You have to hand it to Tennessee, they've got something in order to make all those comebacks.

I get how this is a response to my post, but not the part of it you quoted.
Rankings are supposed to tell us who the better team is. The better team should win the game. Give it a margin of error of +/- 2. So that means if the rankings are correct and two teams ranked closely play, it should be a toss-up (see: UT vs aTm). If the rankings have two teams further apart and the lower ranked team blows the socks off the higher ranked one, the rankings are probably wrong and need to be amended (see: VT vs UNC).
The whole reason we have a 4 team playoff now is that you can make the case for team #4 to play team #1 competitively. In the end, it does come down to head to head, but I agree that the rankings can't just be based on head to head.
If you don't want the weather to beat, don't attempt 33 passes in the rain. UNC didn't want to adapt, neither did Notre Dame and they both lost.

I had absolutely no inside info before, but I stumbled into a brief 1 on 1 conversation over the weekend with someone who is 100% connected 1st hand to the decision to stay at 8+1. This was not with a "someone who works in an athletic dept" or "a big money donor".
Not surprisingly, the old adage "if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras" applies here as well.
Contrary to what I postulated, there isn't some big deal up Swofford's sleeve being worked on (and my sense was that I was getting a straight answer when I asked that question). And contrary to what many others have postulated it also wasn't FSU and/or Clemson pouting and saying they'd take their ball and go home.
My take from the conversation is that the dynamic simply hadn't changed appreciably even with the addition of the 8+2 option. At present, there aren't enough programs that think the economics of that model works for them. And at present there aren't enough teams that think the economics of the 9+1 works for them.
And contrary to what many folks have claimed - saying that 8+1 has hindered the league - the fact that the league HAS been quite successful with the current 8+1 format recently (the number of ranked teams this past week was explicitly stated as an example) made members comfortable with continuing as is when that option was presented to break the stalemate.
And when I asked "2019 is still 3 years off, right?, the response was "yes, definitely".
Coaches poll is a joke and shouldn't be taken serious. How can we honestly expect these Football coaches to rank teams they know nothing about. As fans we watch more games than coaches as they are so focused on 1 team and only study/game plan opponents 1-2 weeks ahead of game time.
Also coaches have a Conference Bias no matter what they say. I'll bet anything if Wash or Clemson lose a regular season game they would drop much lower than an SEC team would in the ranks.

Also Notre Dame, but like the poster said above me, I'd like to think Fuente is a better man than to bail after one season. But hey if he does, there's always Rich Rod...
