Interesting to read your perspective about keeping things close. As civil/structural engineering students back in the late 70's, a friend and I were talking about the high rises we wanted to build up from the east side of downtown. We imagined the view of town and campus would be pretty cool and we still wouldn't need cars (do people still walk to class these days?). Maybe that's going to be a reality sooner rather than later if the town and university work together to manage the inevitable growth that comes that way.

Two years ago weren't we reading how Willie Byrn had taken Ford and Phillips under his wing? And before him, did Willie get to learn somthing from Boykin and Coale? And those guys from whom? Looking ahead, we might not 'ave seen nothin' yet.
Just to be clear, aged beef and sour cream are also off the table?
Ben's Chili bowl: seconded. Doesn't sound like what French is looking for, but It's an experience. No beans in their chili IIRC. Haven't been to Haute Dog, and I live in OT. Good reviews, people like to complain about their prices. It's in Old Town, duh.

No team, or individual player, in their right mind believes they are going to lose before they step on the field.
I disagree. Teams have a reputation, and players buy into that. No one on USC thought they were going to beat Alabama this year. This happens in every sport, and almost every level. With each win, you seem a little more unbeatable.
Do you really think UVA actually thinks they can beat us?

I really happy with how this team is reacting after wins
Actually reminds me of Tech in the early 2000s shortly after Mike Vick left. In 2002, we lost 3 straight after being ranked 3rd and didn't even drop out of the rankings. In 2003, after losing to WVU 28-7 ranked third in the country, we dropped to 10th, handled a week Miami team the following week (DeAngelo Hall said they were week in the week leading up to the game), and suddenly rose back to 5th. The rest of the season was rather forgettable after that.
Sam is gonna make a hell of a coach one day I think.

I'm going to address this as both a Virginia Tech student (albeit a freshman in his first semester) and as a lifelong Blacksburg resident.
Student -- I think that the push to continue to be one of the best universities in the country is fantastic. To become one of the elite universities, there will always need to be innovative developments being made. President Sands has come in and really made an effort for that to continue to happen and to grow. This new development is the first part of what I expect to be many expansions towards the 460 side of campus. There are issues that will come out of this.
As other people have said, getting food on campus is a nightmare during the peak hours. Turner has turned into a madhouse for lunch, where it's even hard to walk around looking for food. West End during dinnertime is always packed, and I usually go right before they close, just to avoid the rush. However, the living-learning communities are great for Virginia Tech. I'm living in one right now -- the Residential College at West AJ -- and it's great to have such a tight knit group of people around in the hectic environment that is college.
Blacksburger -- 50K students will NOT work for this town as it is set up right now. The feel of Blacksburg dramatically shifted during the summer and during the school year while I was living at home. Everything felt rushed and crowded when the students got back to town. This would only get worse if we shove 20K more students into town (duh).
I love Virginia Tech and I love Blacksburg, but those two have got to work together and stop being passive aggressive with each other. Virginia Tech has got to do a better job of interacting with downtown business (RIP Mikes Grill), and Blacksburg has got to do a better job with zoning for students to be closer to campus so it's not a 15 minute drive for students to get to class.

The hot dogs I've always liked best are Hebrew National (or really any Kosher hot dog). The best cole slaw is vinegar based like the barbecue you find in North Carolina (another good reason for going to football games in North Carolina). Stumbled into some good places going to a game with N.C. State once.
My personnal favorite Beenie Weenie taste treat is to mix Bush's baked beans with Hebrew National hot dogs (boil the hot dogs first separately in water for a few minutes, then take them out and cut up prior to mixing with the beans), pour some honey on top, heat to boil for a couple minutes and then at the last minute add a little catchup. Mmmmmmm good. The molasses that comes in the baked beans can helps too.
It is 50k from what I've heard...

My daughter and her buds swear the best hot dogs in the world are in Iceland.
Have you tried the Beenie Weenie in Arlington/Shirlington area? I've never had a hot dog there but their sandwiches are pretty good.
Also, hell yes to both Skeeters and Dip Dog. (My wife is from the Wytheville area and has family in the Rural Retreat/Abington/Chilhowie area).

# | Remember that time I said that Vinny Mihota would make this defense better? Minolta is the Engleburger of this D. He makes Ken better by drawing attention. He makes the LBs better by his fundamentals allowing them to have space to operate (and not having to be heros). His pressure (along with the other DLs) allows the DBs to be aggressive.
Maybe should have just said this to begin with. ;)
