PS the bicep works in isometric tension under the load and even more so if you use a mixed grip. It's why most bicep tears in the weight room happen while deadlifting.
Here's the thing. I'm not a terribly strong person. I have shitty genetics and I'm older. I have not bragged at all about my strength. All I'm doing is simply spreading information about what I know about weight lifting and strength training (and it's a good bit). It's a discussion board.
Additionally, people see these kids and athletes lifting this way, and assume that it's OK and it's how you train, and it's not. And this dumbassery gets propagated on down the line. For some, all it does is function as a barrier to being stronger and better than they might be. For others it results in injury.
There no damn reason this kid shouldn't be squatting to depth, and frankly, there's no reason why anyone shouldn't be able to squat to depth barring something exceptionally debilitating such as late stage osteoarthritis, or hip or knee prosthetics.
I'm sure there are people out there, reading the comments, who might be glad that they learned something.
Am I the only one that just assumed his number was already retired??

I think we learned the last few years that you're never truly stacked at any position.
And youve been driving on the wrong side of the road this whole thread. Cool your jets.
I'm pretty sure the S&C staff here can teach this dude the right form, so be glad he chose to come to VT rather than rail on him for two clips of poor form.
so much easier things to denigrate about ... like the generation who loves her, loves teenage mutant ninja turtles and flat bill hats with the stickers still on them.
I think we agree with each other more than it might seem. I agree our lane discipline as been frustrating the last few years, plus lots of man coverage makes the defense more susceptible to scrambles. It has been a function of several things, and as stated, I am more concerned with us fixing our troubles with QB counters/sweeps, which often effectively outnumber the defense at the point of attack, because those are staples of an offense. I would love to see us give up fewer scrambles for first downs/big gains, and that can be achieved with more zone and much better lane discipline/tackling. But overall, if we have a mildly effective offense, a team relying on QB scrambles isn't likely to beat us, our offense the last few years has just been so bad/unreliable that it has greatly increased the impact that running QB's can have on our team where we HAVE to stop the offense almost every drive to have any chance to win.
This means that Isaiah Ford switches to basketball for ACC play right?
Look man just stop. Parading around your knowledge of weightlifting makes you look like a tool. Yes lots of people are going to say things on the internet that are incorrect but your identity doesn't need to be wrapped up in trying to prove everybody wrong. The best competitive lifters I know are some of the most humble.
Just be willing to say "hey that kid's pretty strong and is a great addition to the Hokie football team."
PS: If you're using your biceps to move a deadlift you're going to have a bad time (sorry I couldn't help myself).
Exactly. Transfers taking scholarships but sitting has hurt the depth of the team in years past but the extra spot will help to build depth for later seasons.
Yeah you can't really attribute all the woes to broken plays. You're right that any talented QB can burn great defenses on broken plays.
The best way for the defense to limit the effectiveness of QB runs is better tackling and improved lane discipline. The strain on the defense is more than it has been in years past because of how much we run 4-2-5 now, removing a linebacker from the field.
If you want enforced Parity, and spending limits the NFL is for you.
VT is now a big boy school and getting bigger. If we hadn't spent a decade slowly becoming one of the worst in the P5 at cultivating a donor base we could be taking advantage with a much expanded level of resources.
That's on us not on the NCAA, they didn't create rules that forced Weaver to slowly kill the Hokie club and not evolve with the times.
For a history trip that horse was never in the barn to begin with. When Pop Warner was coaching Cornell in the late 1890's he once protested Harvard allowing certain players on the team. Supposedly they had a deal with a Cigarette company owned by a Harvard alum that gave them a profit if they sold boxes to other students, thus funding their education in the days before legal athletic scholarships.
Deadlifting strengthens the adductors, hamstrings, glutes, spinal erectors, the abs, the traps, parts of the rotator cuff, biceps, forearms, and everything else inbetween. How again is that not relevant to football.
And, if you look carefully, the powerclean is essentially, a deadlift, done fast with a jump, shrug and a catch. It works the exact same group of muscles. Your power clean is a function of your deadlift strength, usually around half.
Sounds like someone is upset a high school kid is stronger than they are.
in that case, this does a lot. It means Buzz can draw good transfer players that will take up a scolly next year even though they won't play until Wilson leaves.
Please understand I agree with your mentality on this whole discussion but as a powerlifter it hurts me to hear...
You will never in football use either a deadlift or overhead press by itself. They are isolation movements that target a very specific muscle group in the body.
A deadlift is a posterior chain exercise, meaning it uses everything from the bottom of the hamstrings, all the way up to the upper traps when done correctly.
Other than that please carry on.
Sorry, I was referring to the clips as listed in sequence not their actual title. I am actually referring to clip 7. It looks like he holds a block for a second or so and then runs downfield looking back for a pass. I was just curious because the two players on the end of the line of scrimmage are always eligible, except the player on the right side here is an ineligible tackle. So is the TE eligible or do you just lose an eligible receiver in this formation?
If CFL is anything like arena football, this could be awesome for JC. What great guy and what a Hokie. Never quit and never put his head down and that goes a long way on and off the football field.
the only clips I saw that you might be referring to with the TE lined up on the same side as the X WR are Clip 7 and Clip 5. To me, in Clip 5, it looks like the TE is not covered up because he is far enough off the line of scrimmage (lined up almost as an H-Back) and in Clip 7 he is clearly run blocking so he doesn't need to be eligible. What am I missing?
Edit: It also looks like the TE is covered up in clips 13 and 14 but he blocks down in both and is clearly not part of the passing game.
Agreed! I'm just saying you are using the strength from those lifts and not performing those actual movements. It's rare to see a player deadlift an opponent who is lying prone on the ground.
I don't care how much or how he lifts weights. I just love the way he makes pancakes.
Tony is annoying, but P90X is a good workout

Lol. Sorry man, you're out of your lane here.
And now, with Fuente/Cornlesen, we will have an offense which can hurt you with a running game from the QB position. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Okay, last reply with this whole discussion.

Combination lifts like the powerclean combine muscle groups into action you would find on a football field as in dropping low on a d line man and driving up and through him, effectively creating a more effective block with leverage. If you're saying this kid doesn't have strength, you are blind. This kid is putting things together to squeeze in some more to his workouts.
This will always be an ongoing dialogue in the fitness world. I understand compound lifts are not always as safe as isolation lifts and we want our athletes in padded rooms until we throw them into a brutal game with violent collisions. This kid is showing some serious moxxy and desire and I like that. It is a personal thing and you are free to disagree but before you go saying I don't know what I am talking about, consider that fact that we are likely talking about different things, as internet debates typically go.
Now, I take my leave. Good day.

good lord... wtf did I just read.. that was worse than a TSL chain of shit
