Tyrod was offered more money to be the backup to Peyton Manning in Denver but he choose a lower amount to compete for the starting job in Buffalo. He wasn't the starting QB when he signed the contract, therefore he wasn't going to get "starting QB" money. The contract was set for 3 years. However, there was a clause that if he started more than a certain percentage of games, the third year of the contract would be removed, which it was.

It was a great deal for someone who had never been the #1 QB on a roster before. Yes, he's making less than any other starting QB but the amount was agreed upon before he ever became the starting QB. Do you expect them to reevaluate the contract after week 8 of the season?

He's now on his last year of the contract and the Bills have 2 options:
1. Create a new contract now, that would guarantee Tyrod in Buffalo for a longer period of time.
2. Wait until the original contract ends and try to sign him to a new contract

Option 1 is a great idea if you think he's your "franchise QB". From what I've seen from interviews with GM Doug Whaley, he's still unsure if he's going to be and they're already struggling with cap space. The last thing they need is to spend RGIII money on a QB that turns out like RGIII. (1 great year and then nothing).

Option 2 can be considered the "wait and see" approach but it comes with a big risk. IF Tyrod lights it up next year, the Bills would then have to compete with other franchises to resign him and those other teams will probably be able to pay more money.

Don't worry. As long as Tyrod keeps doing Tyrod things, he'll be rewarded handsomely by this time next year....if not sooner.

I hope he puts in Ford type work and has a breakout season for him, me and everyone else. This could be the wake-up call he needs to realize the NFL does not pay as much for potential as they do for results. That is not to say he has not been working on his game, I would hope he has been, but I've never heard coaches site him as an example of outworking his peers.

I would imagine that CJF told him in their conversation something along the lines of "I have some big things planned for you in our offensive system next year.... PLEASE DON'T LEAVE!"
