I like our chances in October, for the sole reason that it came down to the wire, and our learning curve should be exponential compared to a more linear one by all of the BSU veterans.
And that LSU team were monsters. I think our team at the end of last year would have done better against Bama, and this year we would do better against Boise St after a few warm ups...but I still think LSU would have spanked us in 2007 no matter when we played.
Sometimes I think they do this on purpose. What else could explain it?
"Even though the losses to USC, LSU and ECU should make me think otherwise, the day I stop blindly believing that it'll all come together is the day I stop being a Hokie."
No Crystal this year as I had hoped but I'll be back again next year egging you on Joe even though my trust has once again been misplaced.
I finally got back online today, peaking through my fingers at the headlines before I ventured into my usual haunts. Except for the usual ignorant ACC-haters, most people seemed to take the game at face value i.e. good game, as advertised, etc.
It might be nice to sit comfotably where Boise St is at right now, but at least we have a real season to look forward to between now and the bowl game. And it's also good knowing that 20 points off of miscues is a lot to spot someone and still be in it to the end.
I couldn't agree more...I've always felt that if the lower team covers the spread, then leave them where they are even if they lose. UNC should have gone up.
i can't wait to drop mine tomorrow. i have the idea, now i need is 15 mins of free time with gimp.
played at times ... they only lost by 3.
I want to see other teams, including VT play a few to get an opinion on them.
though that didn't help much vs lsu.
most teams in week 1 as they almost all play the sisters of the poor.
everyone has a good idea after a month or so and everyone but boise is likely to lose a game or 3.
We could have left the game scheduled in October and still shown off our grapefruits. I like playing against a big non-conference opponent each year. However, going forward I'm in favor of at least one warm up.
atleast we will be known as the only major team with the cajones to play them. we have a good reputation and this is why espn loves us.
UNC almost beats LSU with their 2nd string D. Ditto on VT dropping to 13. I would like to disregard early season polls since few games have been played but they set the tone for end of season expectations and ultimately the BSCS. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The computer polls aren't any better. They only apply consistency to a set of opinions of rating factors determined by the program creator. In other words they make sure the numbers support the opinon. We need to go to computer only polls and get rid of the ambiguity of the "voter" At least then there will be consistency. Also no chance for regional bias.
1. Down 17-0 to #3 team yet still come back to lead twice in the 4th. Team has heart and talent.
Coaching-Even with heart and talent, need better game situational awareness and control (get an expert at this?).
2. Need better clock management down the stretch. Run the play clock to near zero and don't pass. Time trumps field postion - go for it on 4th down to kill more time.
3. Call time outs to settle the young D (and the coaches) when they are under attack.
4. Have a better plan for the 1 minute offense and practice it. Use it even if you don't need to (in the first quarter of the first game) to get practice. Since you have only done it in scrimmage you shouldn't be waiting until the end of the first game.
5. Be careful scheduling early season top 5 match-ups.
6. FedEx has never seen a bigger tailgate party! A sea of maroon, orange, and black. It was a great scene. The weather was perfect and the crowd was loud. Had a great time until the end.
didn't see that the first time thanks
I moved them down to 19th.
the spread of 13.5 pts, this isn't a straight pick 'em.
I would have had to be put on suicide watch. jk
I got 2 right though with LSU and TCU :) so I should be 2-3-1
I love doing these picks, but am always terrible...Going try to continue my streak of finishing dead last!
Ill take that
The commenters around these parts are some of the most rational and intelligent around.
It's absurd how many people think our season is over after one loss. Remember when we got thrashed by LSU and "all was lost". Had we had beaten Boston College, we would have qualified for the MNC. No bones about it, we need to improve, but we have the talent and potential to be a great team. There's a long way to go between now and December.
I know, according to the media Boise has now justified their entire 2010 season by defeating a lower ranked team that had an unimpressive defense. Not only that, but Tyrod was able to exploit their secondary standing behind a holey offensive line.
what is this? great article and well-thought out comments. it is good to hear from reasonable minded hokie fans who don't want beamer fired, who think there is still a season left to play, and who don't want to see our team completely re-done.
In retrospect, it was a good game. Boise fans were a solid bunch and they policed themselves just as well as we did.
We played sloppy and made bad decisions at key times. As surreal and bogus as the refs spotting them ~30 yards on their last drive was, you still gotta keep them out of the end zone.
All in all it was a good day. Caught up with folks I hadn't seen since I graduated.
I believe we still have the ACC, you can see the talent oozing through despite the gaffes.
These setbacks and stepping stones will be worth it when we finally get the MNC.
our kids picked it up and started to look great. That game in Oct probably wouldn't have ended that way. I am not gonna take anything away from Boise, they played a hell of a game and looked like the number 3 team. We also looked like the number 10 team in the country. My biggest gripe is that ESPN is playing this "who doubts Boise state now." We were the underdogs going into the game. We were ranked lower, we had more questions, and they returned almost all there starters. Boise blew a 17-0 lead and won in the end. Tyrod shouldn't have audibled to a 50 yard pass on 3 and 7 with 1:40 left on the clock and no time outs for Boise. Worst case there is we take 60 seconds off the clock, best is RMFW gets a first down and the game is over. I'm done with my soap box and happy we played one hell of a football game.
Good work, @maggduffs

I hope you're not either.
Most importantly, we have a lot of work to do, but knowing that we have an offense that can rally like that will go a long way in November when the defense is up to snuff.
