A Quick Update on Strength and Conditioning

I mentioned a little while ago that the team was taking their summer workouts very seriously. Eighty players have been on campus this summer getting bigger, faster and stronger on Dr. Mike Gentry's watch. The BeamerBlog has been posing results of the top performers and it's evident they've been training hard.

Darren Evans benched 405 lbs to best the tailback position record of 400 lbs. Evans now lays claim to both the bench and front squat (400 lbs '09) records among tailbacks. True freshman monster defensive tackle Nick Acree benched 450 lbs, that ties him with Blake DeChristopher and Josh Call for the most on the team. F4H mentioned to me a week ago that he was surprised senior defensive end Steven Friday only weighed 235 pounds. Being so light I wondered how he'd play against the run. Well he benches 440 lbs, almost double his body weight. That upper body strength will help him separate from blockers and a light frame will make him even harder to catch coming off the edge.

Jarret Boykin (354 lbs), Logan Thomas (321 lbs) and David Wilson (341 lbs) all broke their own power clean records at their respective positions set in the spring. Wilson was also among the best in 10-yard dash (1.64 s) and vertical jump (40"). It's interesting to note, DW is the most well rounded athlete on the team, and will probably end up redshirting this season. Kwamaine Battle (475 lbs), Vinston Painter (455 lbs), Telvion Clark (455 lbs) and D.J. Coles (435 lbs) all set front squat position records.

Let it be known that I've gone from sippin' the Kool-Aid to holding a pitcher above my head dousing myself in sugary goodness.
