McShay on VT's offense

It's as brutal as you might expect.

Andy has the whole story here.

Excerpt below. Bolding added for emphasis.

(McShay) saved his most damning statements for the Hokies’ offensive scheme, however, which he said was “out-dated by 10 or 15 years” and could affect Thomas’ preparedness for the next level.
“I do think the best thing that could happen to him, whenever he does come out for the draft, is maybe go a little bit later,” McShay said. “Maybe get drafted in the second or third round and not have that pressure to play right away. Because I don’t think he’s going to be ready to start from a consistency standpoint.
“And I think knowing what I know coming out of that program on the offensive side, I don’t think that he’s going to be ready from a mental standpoint. He may be a genius or … I have no idea how smart he is as a player. But he’d have to make such an adjustment from that offense to NFL offenses that no matter how smart you are, it’s going to take a little bit of time.”

Sigh

No surprise here.
Question is do you think Coach Beamer would agree?? If someone could help him realize the truth then maybe we might see some realistic changes during the offseason.

"Outdated"

Describes our program perfectly. From play-calling, to gameday experience, to media exposure, and most importantly - student gameday involvement. It's never been just Beamer - it's the program as a whole.

Granted - the old school approach has brought some serious positives. Shockingly, it's one of the few recruiting pulls we have. Worked for top-notch players like Caleb...

My faith and hope are with Shane Beamer. #Shane2016

Explain to me what is outdated..

I don't get it. Maybe I'm not current enough to understand.

As for game experience, I haven't been to Lane for five years, so I don't know what is current in gameday experiences. Are other schools installing iPads to the back of each seat? Is there a way to tweet your opinions with #LANESTADIUM and it will get put on the jumbotron?

I also don't understand what anyone can say about outdated play calling... They've installed the cool, hip pistol formation. They run no-huddle and pass 60% of the time. What's outdated? The fact they occasionally run I-formation just like every team in the NFL? Or is it the WR screen, which Percy Harvin gains 50 yards out that play every Sunday?

Oh, I know what's outdated. They only have new uniform changes for 50% of the games, not all of them. That must be it.

Yea, Baylor runs an option based offense, not so advanced for the NFL. So, what did the Redskins do to get RGIII up to NFL speed? They added plays from the Baylor playbook. And look, now he's the 2nd best fantasy QB this year (which means he's pretty good QB).

I'm not that big of fan of VT's offensive sheme, but McShay's comments don't make sense. Can anyone explain to me what he meant?

I call total bullshit on that last sentence. If there is so much of an adjustment from our offense to the NFL then how was Tyrod able to get drafted and win the Raven's backup job his rookie season.

I'm confused by the two comments above:

I don't know what the whole Lane Stadium with ipads comments is about?

And I don't know if our play calling is outdated as much as it is just plain bad sometimes. I think that's more of what he was getting at, I'm not getting too caught up on the wording. And yes we've installed this cool pistol but it hasn't been that successful, and regardless, the pistol doesn't transfer to the NFL. And don't compare Logan to RG3, that's a comparison that Logan is not living up to right now, AT ALL. RG3 provides such a unique skill set that Shanahan had to build something around him or it would be a waste of talent. Logan not so much. He's big and unique in that matter, but I don't see any NFL coaches scheming around his skill set. He's gonna have to be a pro style quarterback that every now and then will get a first down on a broken play with his legs. And all of that interior running, trying to run over linebackers will stop with force once he gets to the league, let's be real about this. But overall, our offense is nothing like Baylors and he's nothing like RG3.

And to the one right above me. I love Tyrod so I'm taking nothing away from him, but I don't think saying we have a backup quarterback in the league is a strong argument.

Bottomline, let's be honest about this guys. If you've watched our games this year it's very easy to see that Logan has been pretty bad. His mechanics, his accuracy, his decision making, his everything hasn't been to the level that anybody expected. Not saying he can't turn it around (AND I HOPE HE DOES IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES #beatclem) but I don't think McShay's comments are really that off.

Let me know if I'm wrong somewhere.

My biggest issue

was McShay making bold statements without any evidence or facts. I hate when people do that, make a statement and never back it up.

My sarcastic iPads comment was about the previous poster saying the gameday experience was outdated. I didn't understand that and I don't know what the "most current" gameday offerings are. I don't know what people are looking for, maybe a jumbo screen like the one in Cowboy stadium. I just don't know.

I wasn't comparing RG3 to Logan. My point was this. Baylor runs a an option offense which is a"college" offense that is "outdated" in terms of NFL. Yet, RG3 is going off in the NFL. The draft analysts said it would take RG3 time to adjust to the NFL, unlike Luck because Stanford ran an NFL style offense. Well, RG3 put up 40 points against NO in week 1. Perhaps it would be better to look at some of VT's players that had great rookie seasons, like Eddie Royal, but VT examples are few and far between. I don't actually believe that's based on VT's offense, but due to the lack of NFL caliber athletes on the offensive side of the ball.

Logan has been a disappointment, no question. And I do think there are some areas that better coaches would really prepare him for NFL, but it has nothing to with an outdated offesne, but simply the caliber of his coaches. I think McShay would have been correct if he stated the coaches don't prepare the players for the NFL because they don't teach all the technique that it takes to be successsful in the NFL. The best example I continue to see week in and out is the blitz pickup by the RBs (NFL GMs and coaches have said this about VT RBs in the past). Every time an LB blitzes, the VT RB tries to block him straight up, and everytime the LB pushes the RB into the QB. NFL RBs usually take one of 2 methods to block a blitzing LB. First, is the dive into the waist of the blitzing LB, which completely stops the LB's momentum. Second, is to push the LB to the left or right, using the LB's momentum to push him past the QB. You hardly ever see RBs getting pushed into the QB in the NFL, but you can see it all the time when watching a VT game.

Don't get caught up on wording, focus on the message

"Logan has been a disappointment, no question. And I do think there are some areas that better coaches would really prepare him for NFL, but it has nothing to with an outdated offense, but simply the caliber of his coaches."

I think we both agree McShay's remarks are harsh, but valid. Eddie Royal is irrelevant to this argument; The mental part of football is very important to a quarterback, not nearly as much for a wide receiver.

I hope changes are made. I hope "disrespect" from fans/media/polls influences change. If not we're going to continue to get criticized like this and it's well deserved.

Careful what you wish for

I think McShay could back it up if he wanted too, which wouldn't be good I gurantee he could dig up some ugly stats on VT. Its sad to say but its kinda the eyeball test. It's like when people praise alabama, all they have to say is "have you seen them play".
