Corey Marshall leaves Virginia Tech (Update: JK, he's staying)

Link here to Gobbler Country

Marshall becomes the eleventh player (as far as I can tell) to leave the program since the end of the 2012 season. Since the start of camp, the Hokies have lost non-scholarship kicker Brooks Abbott, and scholarship players Jarontay Jones, Davion Tookes and after another absence Donaldven Manning to transfer, and offensive lineman Adam Taraschke who decided to stay at Tech but quit the team. In addition, Michael Holmes was dismissed from school and Kevin Asante was kicked off the team for this year. It was also announced that Riley Beiro, Nick Acree and Jake Goins have all been lost for medical reasons, though it is unsure if Goins' issue is a career-ending one. Additionally, the Hokies have lost Tony Gregory and Ronny Vandyke for the season and Mark Shuman for 4-6 weeks to various injuries. That is in addition to the serious injuries to Antone Exum and Mark Irick, as well as the nagging injuries to D.J. Coles, Deon Clarke and the five others listed with injuries that comprise the Hokies walking wounded. The Hokies also had four players (Drew Harris, Holland Fisher, Cequan Jefferson and D.J. Reid) from previous recruiting classes (2012 and 2013) who didn't qualify. Whew, did I miss anyone? Yes, it's that ridiculous.

Edit: Looks like he's going to stay with the team.

PISS!

Go Hokies!

Now that that's out of my system, next man up...

"Exit light..."

I think this means that Kris Harley is ready to break out.......

Like some rumblings on the other side, a new argument is being made. Maybe the attrition isn't a bad thing. New coaches = new relationships. We've been upset with complacency for years and when you kick birds, feathers ruffle. So, maybe this attrition isn't something to be worried over as much as excited.

I'm by no means in the loop, but I've seen things like "3 strikes you're out" etc. We wish him the best, but, maybe just because you play good doesn't translate into being a real Hokie.

Upvote for "Kick birds, feathers ruffle".

Injuries happen and transfers happen. Next man up may be a star we don't know until the games are played. Football isn't played on paper its played on grass and some kids don't impress in practice but when they get their shot they make the best out of it. Good luck to Corey and I thank him for his contributions

Couldn't agree more. While losing Corey does suck, it just opens the door for another player.

Enough of this pity for ourselves, it's time to start feeling pity for every team in our sights! The Hokies are a team. The Hokies are bigger than one player.

I know that as a high school player that never went into a season as a starter but got a chance do to injury or eligibility. Obviously this is a diff level of the game but the premise is the same. Take advantage of the chance and make some waves and I feel we have guys that are just like that

This will hurt next year. But as long as Harley and Ekanem step up and develop into starters to go along with Dadi and Maddy, the d-line will be fine. Williams, Baron, and Smith should all be solid players and hopefully one of them develops into a star. Roth and Dooley should also provide depth. Add in potentially Teller in his second year, Mihota, and hopefully Walker and/or Nnadi, and the defensive line at Virginia Tech will still be a strength.

well I hope shes right (in that he didnt leave)

I know people were saying 'next guy up' etc etc, but if we are being honest with ourselves, a team can only take so much attrition before the wheels start to fall off. Marshall staying will be huge to keep our DLine as a strength this year and next

Now his high school coach is saying that Corey is still a Hokie.

Is Corey Marshall a notorious prankster, by chance?

What the fuck. I'm going to feel awful bad about my post if he stays.

Cripes. I'll in advance give my apology. If you're in fact staying, I'm very sorry. It's like getting multiple pairs of socks before opening the Playstation on Christmas Morning.

No hard feelings. Especially when we #beatBama

I hope he does stay. The guy has DE size and athletism, but is moving inside, "to take one for the team" as Coach wiles would put it, because the guys who should be stepping up there, are not. Once Gayle and Collins graduate I believe that Corey Marshal will secure a starting role at the DE position where he should finish his career as a Hokie. He would be a sore lose in my opinion.

http://www.nbc12.com/story/23168228/marshall-still-on-hokies-football-te...

However, Dinwiddie head coach Billy Mills told NBC12 Sunday night that Marshall has informed him that he is still a member of the Hokies football team. Marshall told Mills during a phone conversation on Sunday night, after initial reports broke.

Mills also says that Marshall was never in any sort of trouble in regards to his status with the team

Why the heck did he put it out via his high school coach. Obviously there was some smoke there.

It's as age old as the game. Kid plays one position his whole life. Is asked to move at a high level. Doesn't think he attains or is attaining the attention. Soul searching. Tells a "pal" shit is getting hard. Might want to jet. Etc.

"Pal" leaks something to a message board. Shit gets crazy.

I'd venture to say the beginning happens a lot. I can't imagine having the world on your shoulders for your family, etc, then having to read a skewed version of things on line.

Heady stuff man. But still for the love of Christ, #beatBama

Now I can get back to studying after worrying about this the entire night

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

I'm guessing he just felt a little stressed or something - overwhelmed maybe? I haven't really been following his transition to the inside but learning that could have taken a toll. I'm his age, college can be stressful. I had an emotional break down mid summer one time because of Calculus 2.

I could be totally in the wrong here though.

I had an emotional breakdown my entire freshman year because of Calculus....and Chemestry...and...so on, and so on....geesh! What a year that was! Ok, it was more like four quarters (we were on the quarter system at the time).

Yeah my freshman year I took Calc, Chem, Linear Algebra (with an awful professor), and english. English wasn't bad I just didn't work hard enough. My GPA was not pretty.

Sounds like engineering. I ended up missing a lot of my noon chem classes, did OK in calc, ended up retaking Linear Algebra, don't remember much of English.

Apparently me wanting to design stuff didn't mean that engineering was the path I should have taken. Sadly, took a while to figure that out, but once I switched majors, I was able to bring that GPA up to a somewhat decent level. Granted, no one has ever asked me about my GPA, seems to not matter at this point.

Fun fact: All Linear Algebra professors are awful. Pretty sure that is a requirement for the Math Department.

Mine was pretty bad. My differential equations professor was awesome, though, although he spoke NO English. His classes were him writing all the notes on the board and we just copied them. Questions were answered in equations. Only one of my three multivar professors were any good. Yes, I said three. Two F's and an A. How does that even happen.

Well, they had the requirement for math emporium. If I had to make a bunch of kids go there for 3 hours a week, is be awful too.

Junior year, I took physics, organic chemistry, biochemistry, food micro, three labs, and technical writing (which was writing intensive) in one semester. And I started dating my husband. My GPA was uglier than Sean Glennon's collapse in the Chick Fil A bowl against Georgia.

Live for 32. Ut Prosim. Let's Go, Hokies.

I bet your GPA was still higher than the number of fans at UVa's spring game.

Not like this is the first time my heart has skipped a beat, due to Hokie Football...

i wish they would keep him (and other players) in a position and let him develop at that position (ideally DE, where we recruited him to play). i dont think the back and forth does the player much good in trying to get to the next level.

I agree with this. College football is amateur but it's also the minor leagues for the NFL. If you're a kid who has real talent that can get to NFL level I can imagine it would be excruciatingly frustrating to be asked to switch around so many times. All you want to do is play the position you love and excel at it. The team's deficiencies in other areas are really not your fault. The coaches are at fault. Attrition, bad recruiting, players leaving early. Not things a player controls, so getting told to constantly switch for the team has got to be tough.

What I worry about more is that it affects recruitment of future top rated recruits. Unfortunately we do not pull the never-ending backlog of 5 and 4 star players like Bama. When we get a great recruit we need to promise to play him where he wants and keep that promise until either he realizes he isn't capable enough there or has better skills elsewhere.

I know Teller to OL makes sense and he will undoubtedly be a beast there. But he said so many times he wanted to play defense and only defense during his recruitment, that it really is concerning when he is asked to move so quickly. And before people say he moved on his own, let me say that if you played football or any organized sport at even high school level you know that your "own decision" comes with a huge amount of pressure to help the team and coaches. It's massive peer pressure.

I'm glad Marshall is back and still a Hokie. He should be DE behind Gayle though.

Bitter says that Teller actually asked grimes to move last week.

And didn't Corey make the move to DT to actually get playing time, because he was being buried by Dadi and Tyrell at end?

Chick Patty w/ Cheese

I don't think anyone, even Teller, would say that was anyone's but his own choice. But that doesn't mean you don't feel the pressure of the team on your shoulders to make that choice.

Not sure what's up with Corey though

From what I have heard, the intent is to use him for backup at OL now, in case of an emergency. Bud very much wants him back and has plans for him in the future. So at this point, seems like a better safe than sorry scenario.

I say Bud and Grimes fight for Teller. I'd watch that.

We could sell tickets and likely completely finance the building of the new indoor practice facility. And the fight itself would probably clear the ground for it.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

In addition to that, we would have more spectators showing up than UVA had fans at their spring game.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

if he does go back to DL next year, that means he'll have spent an entire year learning technique he wont use again. then in the spring and fall camps, we'll be reading about how raw he is. i love guys willing to help the team, but put him somewhere and keep him there is my point. obviously these coaches and the players themselves know more than i do, but i still think finding them a position and keeping them there is ideal.

From Andy Bitter's blog earlier today:

But if everything works out and Im good at it, Im going to stay, Teller said. If we need help on the d-line, Ill move there. Wherever coach needs me.

Aaaaand that's why we wait for more than one source to report stuff (or, better yet, official reports from VT, as delayed as they might be), before we freak out. Glad Marshall's hanging around.

Twitter is a blessing and a curse because of things like this. It's great to get quick information but this leads to people/companies rushing stories out without getting then 100% confirmed. Glad Corey is staying now let's #BEATBAMA
