It may or may not be open by the time you all would be leaving if you were considering taking 81 down, so maybe think about alternate routes. I would hate for a few thousand hokies to not make the game or tailgating on time because of a stupid contractor.

I-95 to I-85 is probably the smarter way to go, at least that's the way I'm going.
I-85 is a nightmare sometimes all the way from VA to GA. Driven it many times now.
Mapquest says it's a bit longer, but I-95 to I-26/20 is a good alternate especially when there's a lot of work on I-85 or for holidays when traffic is worse.
I think I've decided to go 95 to 20. I've heard that traffic is generally light on 20. Mapquest says its about an hour longer than 81/85 but I think it will be worth it.
I make the trip to GA from VA at least 5 times a year and 95 to 20 is the way to go.
I-20 is great except time it to avoid Columbia, SC during rush hours, lunch time.
There's construction on 20 W driving into Columbia. Also construction on 20 E leaving Atlanta.
From Bristol, we're going to take I-81 to I-26 through Asheville and then I-85. We've made it that way in 4 and a half hours before. Way faster than going through Knoxville and Chattanooga.
