Yet, should he have committed to an Alabama he'd likely have risen. Ford's going to be in a system in which he will thrive. And with the new kid from Ohio to push him, he'll likely have to do it sooner rather than later. Wonder if that's what Loeffler and Beamer want. Redshirt one of them, get two or three great years out of the other before he goes pro, then the other guy will have two solid years himself. What a plan.

Also this Travon McMillian is in most places listed as an athlete but 247 has him as a dual threat QB. I just saw his highlight vid and he has some amazing vision and scramble ability. Also he has some decent arm strength for a guy his size. 3 new QBs(maybe) with completely different skill sets. I'm stoked!

All our base are covered by this new thing called "effective recruiting".

Absurd.

Ford is the Gatorade POY for the state of Pennsylvania - you don't get that kind of honor without being very good.

It'll be yet another case of stars mean dick in the end.

3 years from now there will be a graphic: 5 stars from whomever we play in the finals and our 3-4 star guys who not only were coached up but put into he best position to play and play well.

Get ready for some big timin things folks. This Hokie team is shaping up better than I could have ever hoped.

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

I agree it looks good, nice to see the seeds of change are starting to bare fruit.

I really wish that there was some sort of graph / diagram that shows the productivity of our recruits according to their star rating. Please tell me such thing exists. It would be interesting to see how little the stars mean. I was looking at Rivals a couple days agoand I saw a lot of four star flops(a bunch of these guys never played a snap ever) and a lot of 2 star standouts, just sayin.

I know ESPN used to re-rank recruiting classes in the off-season 5-years after signing day. Usually we jump 10 spots up from where we were and Miami would drop like a rock. When those came out, I was walking on sunshine all day laughing at Da U.

If Miami dropped like a rock, than what did LOLUVA drop like? A more aerodynamic rock?

If you've ever played Kerbal Space Program, built an awesome rocket, launched it, waited til it got 5000 meters or so in the air, then turned it upside-down and put the throttle up to full, you should have a pretty good idea of how LOLUVA drops.

Like a feather in a perfect Vaccuum. That is why they get all the confused 5 stars out of VA.

Like light into a black hole.

I don't care. Andrew Ford just won the Gatorade POY. He is the cerebral kind of quarterback I get really excited about.

@HaydenDubya

Kris Harley was a 4 star DT that I was excited about then disappointed about. 2 star Luther Maddy is the man.

HS rankings become silly (oh no SIX SPOTS) he is still going to a top school with a great chance of starting as a true freshman.

Coaches perceive ALL recruits as works in progress. Its rare a kid comes in 'game ready' (i.e. B Facyson . Ke Fuller)
The stats are subjective - coaches are projecting what the kid will look/play like 2 years down the road.

I just don't see how it's possible to rank high school players. These are kids playing in different systems and with different levels of talent around them (both on their own team and their opponents). I mean, if we cannot even agree on how to rank 125 FBS schools, how can we rank high school kids?

I guess, the one thing that irks me about the list is that it does not really go into why any of these kids are rising or dropping.

Blue collar work > Blue Chip stars

Wins player of the year in a state that has good talent then drops below a guy committed to Washington State. LOLZZZ. I'd trust French's assessment of high school talent more than these "gurus". The only sport where I think recruiting rankings matter is basketball. Since a lot of those guys play in tournaments against each other, it's a lot easier to rank them against their peers.

EDIT: That almost comes off as an insult to French, which was obviously not the intent.

I think its just too much for these recruiting sites, like you are comparing one editors opinion to another to say who is higher when they probably haven't seen enough of either player. It's impossible for these guys to accurately rank some of these kids (like what does 6 spots mean, who decided that). There is not enough time in the day for these guys. Which is why I prefer an someone like french who can focus on a specific school/players

It's impossible for these guys to accurately rank some of these kids (like what does 6 spots mean, who decided that)

Precisely. I think they're accurate enough to get the gist of a guy's talent (this guy is a 2-star type player, this guy is a 5-star, elite athlete, etc.) for the most part, but comparing the #25 guy to the #45 guy is pretty much worthless.

Not concerned. Johnny Football was rated way lower.

#Let's Go - Hokies

As I understand, a lot of these rankings are based on camps that the kids go to. I don't think it's crazy to believe a reason for Ford's dropping is because me may not have attended as many camps since he has committed and doesn't need to get his name out. Just a theory. It doesn't really bother me.

I'm more excited about the QB competition starting in spring. When David Wilson, Darren Evans, and Ryan Williams were fighting for carries our running back stable was a lot more, well stable. I don't like QB controversy but I like QB competition, and the ol' Harlem Shaker is intelligent enough to make it a competition and not controversy.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Can't even come to a consensus on the best college quarterback, let alone high school:

This I don't even really understand. WINSaTON and the Honorable Johnny Football Presiding are both much more at the center of their systems. McCarron is a handoff/changeup specialist. Sure, when he's asked to make a play he does it with panache, but that's not every single damn down.

They also dropped Xavier Burke from No. 19 to unranked. Classic.

Your daily dose of reality: Here are the star rankings of our starting QBs since MV1.

Michael Vick: 4-star
Grant Noel: 2-3 star
Bryan Randall: 4-star
Marcus Vick: 5-star
Sean Glennon: 4-star
Tyrod Taylor: 5-star
Logan Thomas: 4-star (as a TE)

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

but this would be only the guys who ended up starting right? I wonder what the star ratings were for the career backups or guys who didn't cut it at QB and got moved to other positions (Clayton, Whitaker, etc). I'm sure there would be some highly rated guys who ended up disappointing.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at the Rivals rankings of our QBs from 2002 - 2013. This list includes guys that were recruited as QBs and/or played QB at some point in their careers at Tech:

2002 Marcus Vick (5 star QB)
2003 Jon Fulton (2 star QB)
2003 Cory Holt (3 star QB)
2004 Sean Glennon (4 star QB)
2004 Cory Holt (3 star QB) from Hargrave
2005 Greg Boone (3 star ATH)
2005 Ike Whitaker (4 star QB)
2006 Kam Chancellor (3 star QB)
2007 Tyrod Taylor (5 star QB)
2008 Ju-Ju Clayton (2 star ATH)
2008 Marcus Davis (3 star ATH)
2009 Logan Thomas (4 star TE)
2010 Mark Leal (3 star QB)
2010 Ricardo Young (3 star QB)
2012 Brenden Motley (3 star ATH)
2013 Bucky Hodges (4 star QB)
2013 Carlis Parker (3 star ATH)

I'd say the biggest disappointment was Ike Whitaker (4 star QB). There were a lot of players who changed position changes on that list; it's interesting that Rivals listed Kam Chancellor as a QB back in 2006.

Don't forget Davon Morgan, 4-star athlete, played QB in high school in a similar offense as Joel Caleb did (also a QB), then moved to safety.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Antone Exum was a high school QB as well. According to 247 he was rated as a 3-star safety.

Yeah, but I only listed players that were listed as QBs on Rivals and/or played QB at Tech. I'm sure many of our recruits over the years played QB in high school (i.e. Sam Rogers); but as far as I know, Morgan, Caleb and Exum were never in the QB rotation at Tech.

This list includes guys that were recruited as QBs and/or played QB at some point in their careers at Tech

Ah right... Woops I can't read.

As you can see from the list below, Ike Whitaker was the only 4-5 star to not start - the other non-starter QBs were 2-3 stars.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

And Ike definitely would have started if he would have been able shake that alkyhol. I feel for that guy...

From 247 that year it looks like DJ Coles should have been the number one wide receiver recruit in high school with that score. Ratings are for "ratings" IMO.
