Jim Tressel?

I know this is completely random and its totally because I just watched the 30 for 30 Youngstown boys. But do you think Jim Tressel could fit at Virginia Tech if given the opportunity? I would give me left hand for it if it meant we could get him here.

Think that dude came under some trouble for NCAA violations or something while at tOSU so, nah. No thx.

The man made a mistake and served his time. I'm sure Nick Saban and Les Miles get away with far worse

Are referring in terms as a consultant or assistant coach?

I want him as our head coach. I think he understands tradition and he truly cares about the well being of the players. Like Beamer does. He took a lot of the blame for the NCAA infractions brought on by terrell pryor and company. Its tough to report your own players you care about to the NCAA for earning some money their parents can't give em. He ultimately got screwed trying to protect his players. I maybe be stupid but I don't see what we could possibly lose hiring the man, players love him and he wins. What could get worse than last and this season. I just want a National Championship

Not stupid. Just a little misguided perhaps. I'd still take Bud Foster over him. Rather not have a repeat of Dooley.

What we could possibly lose? Um, Frank Beamer. Thanks, but no thanks.

It was more of a mistake, wasnt fully aware of the situation.
Vick got a second chance right? Why shouldn't he.
But he's not a good fit for VT.

This was my initial thought. My next thought was 'What are my other choices?'

The Dude Abides

Interesting to think about, but he's only six years younger than Beamer so I don't know how much of a role he would be able to realistically play in the program's future.

This could never work. Could you imagine VT being represented by someone wearing a sweater vest?

That would almost be as bad as someone wearing a turtleneck every game!

Just a Dick wearing a Dickie.

This may be OT, but I enjoy the occasional sweater vest. If HCFB rocked one with a nice button up shirt underneath, I would not mind.

That being said - and I feel very strongly about this, and probably shouldn't - wearing a t-shirt (yeah I am talking to you Big XII guys) is completely inappropriate. Highest paid salary in the state, leaders of young men, viewed by millions of people and you wear a t-shirt? Just. Stop. /rant.

Absolutely, good coach, good dude. He got caught up in a tough situation and made a bad choice, but the Clarett documentary showed that he was good to MC and their reunion now is great.

I believe if/when Tressel comes back to college, he has a suspension to serve. Same for Chip Kelly.

His suspension expires on December 19th, 2016 I believe and assuming Beamer stays through 2016 then no suspension will be served.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Of note, Tressel is 6 years younger than Beamer and 7 years older than Foster. In 2016, Beamers will be 70, Tressel will be 64 and Foster will be 57. Shane Beamer will be 39.

I think the rule is he can't coach until that date. If he comes back after that he has to sit out 5 or 6 games.

Rip his freaking head off!

I watched 30/30 and too felt sweatervest got a bad rap. VT and especially CFB get a lot of credit for running a clean program and doing it the "right way". Media firestorm would be way to big for it to work. Scrutiny would be too great. Just don't see how it could be successful. Not to mention the whole sweatervest thing...

twitter.com/bmdvt90

He is a phenominal coach and a phenominal person. He develops bonds and relationships with players. He loves them like his own kids. I will take him in a heartbeat. Beamer is only gonna be around a few more yrs as HC and i would def make tressel his replacement.

If you can get him to wear stuff that's more us, I think he'd be okay. The second he wears what he normally wears to a game, he gets kicked to the curb.

I agree, no Ohio State University sweater vests. I assume that is what you meant?

The Dude Abides

I think that as far as coaching, there is little argument that the guy has the ability. But Blacksburg is far different than Columbus. I'm sure that the VT fans will embrace whoever replaces Frank, but this is still in its heart a small town; the rabid fan base win-at-all-costs mentality that plays at OSU is not what this fanbase is about. We want to win, but this program cannot survive NCAA sanctions, we are barely hanging on to top 25 relevancy now. Remember when Butch Davis came to UNC and had all those whispers of impropriety following him from Miami? Good coach, but his antics set that program back.

The Dude Abides

I'd prefer to go after a younger coach. let him grow into the position, even if that means some rough early years it will be worth it I believe (just like Duke and Coach K)

They'll really get after ya

I think he's a solid coach and because he wasnt careful kinda got a bum wrap. But not a fit for VT IMO

Would be an interesting hire, I think that Tressel is a heckuva coach, just maybe not the right man for Virginia Tech.

One of these patrolling the sidelines?

VT sweater vest

Eh. Jury's out.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

I'm fairly certain he got a show-cause penalty when he left OSU. So he'd have to sit out a good amount of time.

Rip his freaking head off!

Tressel is currently in an advisory position at Akron he cant coach for like 5 or 6 years I believe due to the NCAA sanctions

I didn't watch the 30/30, but I'm not sure basing one's judgement on that program is all that sound. This is a network that is less about news and more about "stories" every day. Tressel was one of their fallen darlings. And who doesn't love a story of redemption?

So pardon me if I don't take ESPN's word as gospel here.

Tressel didn't just "make a mistake". He knowingly played athletes that were ineligible. He lied about whether he knew, then when he knew, then who he knew it from, and he lied when he said he didn't know what to do with the information.

The manner of his lies and his excuses leaves no doubt in my mind that he squarely puts winning far above integrity.

So, no. I don't want Jim Tressel anywhere near Hokie football.

No no no no, as someone who as lived in Columbus for over 5 years I refuse to think what VT would look like with Tressell as HC. He ran out of YSU before the NCAA dropped the sanctions on them and lead a culture of NCAA violations at OSU.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I'd take him over Ed Orgeron I guess, but no thanks still.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I have to disagree on this...The Hokies pride themselves on integrity, honor...doing the right thing. I don't think Tressel is a good fit. I think a better choice would be Bobby Petrino or Carl Pelini...

VHokie

Totally agree about Bobby Petrino....lots of picturesque mountain roads near the burg..pefect for a motorcycle ride when the leaves are changing...would even make a good date

The Dude Abides

That was worth a leg for sure.

The Dude Abides

No thanks. Tressell doesn't fit the culture at Tech. Let him find another program willing to take a chance on him.

Give me a head coach who plays by the rules and won't get us in trouble with the NCAA.

I want a clean coach who wants to win and does win, not the nicest guy out there

I think Chris Peterson would make a great coach here. Seems to like the small town atmosphere and he has a proven record making the most of what he gets. Whether that continues now that he is coaching in a tougher conference remains to be seen. But I also think that Bud Foster deserves a chance if he wants the job. He has given his all for this program.

I posted this on another thread regarding a UCLA defensive player, but I feel that it applies here as well:

I've heard the name. Frankly, I'm unimpressed.

Eh. I'd rather not have Tressel. I think he'd be a good coach wherever he goes but he seems too midwesty for our tastes. And as others have said above, blue collars look better on us than sweater vests.

Side note, that 30 for 30 was awesome. Changed my opinion of Maurice Clarett.

I was reminded what an incredible player he really was and the media frenzy around him. Sad story overall but I thought it was cool that his goal as a player wasn't $ but to be an example for kids especially from Ytown. He has an incredibly compelling story, one that should be told to every college football player.

To be clear this ludicrous idea would be his 3rd chance ... he left Youngstown amid a lack of institutional control as well for which they self imposed the loss of some scholarships. Tressel lead a sham investigation within the statute of limitations where he did not even question the player accused of taking money. The only reason they didnt have their championship removed was due to a statute of limitations when more information came to light following the player tampering with a witness later in life for the booster that paid him the money.

Dont want any of that crap. I dont think that kind of history fits in the hokie nation regardless of where it was and what excuses exist. If he had stepped up in either event and said hey this is a problem like I believe Frank and Bud would do without hesitation ... come on down and welcome to Blacksburg ... but he didn't twice.
